70% of American Jews are against the Iraq War 2
americangoy.blogspot.com — A long overdue article from me profiling a long overdue topic - American Jews are overwhelmingly against the Iraq War and are very pro-peace. The neocon movement is overrepresented in the media, politics and government, and the majority of Jewish Americans are disenfranchised from the process.

- flogistan, on 05/12/2008, -9/+10I don't think this is true. If it is true, then the 70% is the meek, unsuccessful portion of the jewish population. Needless to say, I don't think 70% of them are unsuccessful and without power. I think when they are polled, they put on their liberal hats and say the right thing because they know they're being polled. I think they go in the voting booth alone, and vote for the guy who will kill more muslims for israel. They act like Alan Alda when it serves them, they even vote that way if it strengthens their cause. They'll take up civil rights issues, because these laws strengthen their position, not because it improves the lives of african american people, and they'll claim they do it FOR african americans. BS. Disenfranchised jews in America. Where? If authoritarian neoconservatism serves something they're interested in, they'll vote for that too, and when they take the poll, they'll lie about it. If 70% of American Jews wanted peace in israel and the middlle east? There would be peace in Israel and the middle east.

Not necessarily...
The majority of Israelis want Israel to talk with Hamas, but because of Israeli politics Olmert is not too keen on it as it would offend the rabid settler party and break his coalition government...
I argue that the neoconservatives are overrepresented in American mainstream, and the Jewish voices for peace are not at all shown.
Similarly, so called christian pastors who call for war and bombing of Iran and support Israel 110% are all over the tube, while those who are against war are not really given much TV and radio time...
But feel free to disagree - dialogue is healthy.- flogistan, on 05/12/2008, -1/+770% can direct the lobby. The lobby can direct our foreign policy. I'm with miersheimer and walt. You have to force israel to make peace, and the only way to do that is threaten to pull the six billion a year to start with. If that doesn't work, sanctions. They've been playing this cat and mouse game my entire life. Nothing will change because neither the lobby, or our government wants it to, and those two voices are the same. Even the liberals are hawkish about israel, and that's the problem. I usually agree with the stuff you're saying, but we give them so much, if we were determined to have a two state solution and peace, we can do it with simple threats of non-violent action. To do this, the lobby, both liberals and conservatives needs to change its priorities, or the government needs to help them change them.
- 911ArtStudent, on 05/12/2008, -1/+5One thing about Zionist Christiansw is that I firmly believe their numbers are grossly overrepresented. You'll often hear that there are 30 million of them or ~ 10% of America. Hogwash I say. There may be 30M evangelicals but I still believe the Zionists are but a tiny fraction.
- TrevaLVF, on 05/13/2008, -1/+3If you're in some parts of the Midwest, or the South from Texas, to Florida and up to the Carolinas, then you're likely to feel as if you're surrounded by Zionist Christians.
Northeast Texas is full of them.

- TrevaLVF, on 05/13/2008, -1/+4I would not call Barbara Streisand "meek" and "unsuccessful." She is among the Jewish Americans that have opposed the war in Iraq since before it started and I wouldn't be surprised if she opposes a US war with Iran, too. Of course, she did it in typically annoying celebrity speak, but she did take advantage to her easy access to the media to go on record with her objections to this war.
I would not call Streisand "meek," because she's been say and do things that fit the "Jewish American Princess" stereotype.
Her fame and wealth are the results of her success.
You might locate at least Jewish American columnists and journalists that opposes this war in the Opinion's section of the L.A. Times and at the Nation magazine's website.- americangoy, on 05/13/2008, -1/+2Absolutely, but it seems that the neocons from various think-tanks are always invited to the TV "news" shows, able to write newspaper op-ed columns, while people like Streisand are shut off.
- BigManOnCampus, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1Look at it this way. If Mexico hated us, and canada were our friends and wanted to invade Mexico, but we were a relaively small/weak nation, wouldn't we want peace?
Likewise, Israel doesn't really want war. Like all democratic nations, they just want to be left alone. War increases the chances they won't be left alone.

- bincoder, on 05/12/2008, -3/+9just because their religion is jew doesn't mean they are automagically an ally of israel. If they got a woody on over israel like some peeps think they do, they all would move there. Some of them even mix milk with meat then eat it without worry like proper infidels from the USA. They live here because america is not a fascist regime and israel is. There. I said it. Now digg me down.
- TrevaLVF, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2The Bush regime is fascist.
- americangoy, on 05/13/2008, -1/+5Reader Greg Bacon on my blog left the following, also from Ha'aretz, dateline 18/05/2007:
Poll: 71% of Israelis want U.S. to strike Iran if talks fail
"Fully 71 percent of Israelis believe that the United States should launch a military attack on Iran if diplomatic efforts fail to halt Tehran's nuclear program, according to a new poll.
The survey, commissioned by Bar-Ilan University's BESA Center and the Anti-Defamation League, found that 59 percent of Israelis still believe the war in Iraq was justified, while 36 percent take the opposite view.
Some 65 percent believe that the United States is a loyal ally of Israel, with only 11 percent saying the opposite. A slightly higher proportion, 73 percent, described U.S. President George W. Bush as friendly. Forty-eight percent attributed U.S. support for Israel to strategic considerations, while 30 percent credited American Jewry and 17 percent cited shared values and a shared democratic tradition."
Food for thought.
Also from same article:
"Regarding America's importance to Israel, there was near consensus: 91 percent said that close relations with the U.S. are vital to Israel's security. Some 51 percent of respondents predicted that the U.S. will ultimately impose an agreement on Israel and the Palestinians, while 43 percent disagreed."
Interesting, to say the least.- americangoy, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Keep in mind, those are not American Jews polled but Israeli citizens.
