Let's try a little excercise. I've modified your last paragraph slightly, replacing only a few key words. Tell me if you heard anything like this around the time of the civil rights movement.
"It’s entirely possible that interracial marriage proponents might allege that it’s healthy for society to abandon long-standing race roles, and that interracial couples perform a public surface by blurring or erasing these old distinctions. That argument, however, flies in the face of an increasingly overwhelming consensus, as well as common sense, that views blacks and whites as irreducibly dissimilar, and instinctively opposes trendy efforts to blur the distinctions. In that context, the interracial marriage debate rightly takes its place as one crucial battle in a much larger struggle – to preserve recognition of racial differences."
And to think... many years ago, that argument would have been acceptable. - lickmygiggle, on 10/12/2007, -10/+24@squeakywheel
Or, you know, it just joins two adults who love each other.
Apparently there's something wrong with love. - TexTurboesq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14The Constitution works just fine, so long as folks abide by it.
Sadly this isn't the case lately.
Enforce what's there, it works. - AlphaPrime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I say every 10 years wipe the entire government clean. And threaten loosing their job if they don't get certain things accomplished in a certain time period.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16global warming debunked?
you realise that america is the only country to think that, maybe something to do with all the anti-global warming propaganda run buy the oil companies
and ignoring if global warming does or does not exist, whats wrong with just having clean air and a healthy environment (even if it does hurt some companies profits) - CurtHowland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@PowerCow,
My #1 reason for voting Libertarian is Democrats and Republicans.
Oh, sure, if I could be convinced to loath this or that racial, sexual or religious group then either Repub or Demo would appeal to me. But as long as it is _government_ itself that is the problem, neither Democrat nor Republican can claim my vote, because neither the Democrats nor Republicans would lift a finger to do anything but grow _government_.
It is educational that Hillary, the end-all-be-all Democrat, has criticized the present Republican administration for ....... not doing _enough_ in the Iraq war.
Oh, sure, they disagree on "fetal stem cells", but they carefully make sure never to actually define exactly what they mean by the term, so that if in the future they have to change their minds in order to be reelected, they can without being seen to be hypocrites. - BuffalOBisoN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Dump all of the incumbents and elect a Libertarian majority!! Too bad it'll never happen. But if you are a disenfranchised Republicrat that has decided to stay home because "your vote doesn't matter" or any other sad excuse, at least let your dissatisfied voice be heard by voting for a real alternative to the two party system. This is the party of true conservatives. By the way, 'true conservatives' are against this war. Check out the Libertarian party's site. http://lp.org/
- FearNoEvil, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10It doesn't matter who holds power!!! Both parties will continue to dismantle our Constitution and The Bill of Rights. They don't care about America!!!
Wake up America!! - Bullsnot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Those two should definitely be included. We need to fight corruption no matter what party it hides under. Some of the article is lopsided and tries to make its number with a few trivial issues, but the overall picture is accurate. This congress gets less and less effective and more and more corrupt every year. Time for some major HOUSE cleaning.
- minox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It is a very difficult decision because many republicans disagree with the Libertarian social values.
- motorhead9999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Funny how this article says to dump the 109th congress. To me, this article is more "Dump the Republicans in the 109th congress". While I can't say this was the republican's best years, the dems had their fair share of bloated disasters as well. Cynthia McKinney (who has thankfully already been taken care of), and the wonderful case of thousands of dollars in bribe money being found in the fridge of William Jefferson who then tried to have the evidence thrown out by saying that his congressional office is not allowed to be investigated comes to mind among others. If you want to give the list as is, title the article "Get Republicans Out"...but if you're gonna generalize the congress...be fair and list all the other scandals from the other side of the isle.
- cjpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7What's the constitution? I don't think that thing's been around for a while now. Probably 20-30 years?
- DavidYeah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6So..... you're a Democrat.......and you think the best thing to keep Bush in check is to not put him into a "rage" by keeping Republicans in congress and not putting any checks and balances on him.
*forehead slap* - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+17@killinger777:
yes but they call the elections a referendum on bush but thanks for your political education.
I guess i could have listed impeachment
oversight in a thousand areas
and other things but when it comes down to it, it is simple just to abbreviate all the problems as Bush.
I know my number one reason for voting dem is both my republican congressmen support bush and his war in iraq and his military tribunal and his secret prisons and his torture bill. Had bush not supported torture and had even the slightest oversight i would still be voting with the gop. I hate dems - hitori, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@PowerCow if you wanna bash Bush, I think there are other digg articles for that
This article rightly points out that Congress is broken. Something I think if more people were aware of, we might possibly have some hope at turning things around. To degenerate the argument into another "bash Bush" or "bash the GOP" session misses the point. GOP or Dems, they're all the same, corrupt and wealthy, and completely in the pockets of Big Business. - whovian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6On the other hand, workers with more wages means more money for them to spend, which would raise corporate gross revenues. More money changing hands is a good thing, isn't it?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The Mars data, if its even being interpreted correctly by you (which I doubt) is irrelevant.
Have you ever heard of ice cores? You take cores of ice from the arctic, ice which is hundreds of thousands of years old, laid down in layers year by year for thousands of years. That ice contains gases in the atmosphere when it was formed. By analysing these gases, you can see what ratio of gases existed at any given period in history. Studies of ice cores show that climate change is happening faster now, in the last century, than it has ever happened over thousands of years.
The Sun does indeed affect the climate, & in the past the planet has undergone periods of heating & cooling. But not at the rate it is changing now.
Only fools ignore the evidence of rapid climate change. - FearNoEvil, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Screw the REPUBLICANS! Screw the DEMOCRATS! Both parties are morally and ethically bankrupt!!
When are you idiots going to get that!!!!
Quit trying to make this about Democrats and Republicans and pull your head out of your ass!! - InetRoadkill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The problem is that republicans continue to call themselves conservatives, but in reality they rarely practice actual conservatism. It's just a convenient label used to call those who oppose their policies 'liberals' (the opposite of conservative).
The exception is the republican 'social conservative' which is just a euphamism for radical fundie whackjob. 'Social conservatives' are not conservatives at all since they want to use govt to force their particular brand of morality on everyone, whether they want it or not. This contradicts true conservatism which calls for less govt intrusion ... not more. Bushco is a hard-core social conservative, and thus an enemy of true conservatism. Unfortunately, the repubs in congress would rather vote party line rather than defend the interests of the country. And for this reason, I'm voting democratic this year. - Kevin108, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The Government and the People seem to have forgotten that the Government works FOR the People. Vote for change! If we don't do it, who will?
- tmiller51, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yea, we wouldn't want them spending time improving the nation by:
- tweaking trade laws to make the US more competitive and reduce the trade deficit
- getting the US out of the bottom for education among industrialized nations
- discussing actions that could reduce our dependence on foreign oil
- finding ways to slow the rate of inflation of medical care - Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6as opposed to the current choices social values of serving big business and screwings its people over as much as it can?
- tmiller51, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Can you remind me what this congress did about immigration?
- racecar789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It seems the Republicans have become no better than the Democrats in growing the size of government. I know the Libertarian wing of the Republican party is not very happy because of this. Personally, I would vote Republican normally but have been looking at the Libertarian party as a healthy alternative.
If 100% of the Republican base was fully mobilized I believe they would be able to hedge their losses and maintain control of congress. If not, then it looks like there will be a change in congress.
In hindsight, it seems the Republicans have tried to be all things to all people. In doing so they abandoned their core principles and turned their backs on loyal party members. Their efforts to get voters to the polls through their anti-gay/pro-life/anti-flag burning referendums are an act of desperation to squeak out a few more votes although I doubt it will be enough.
The only way they can really pull off a solid defense is if their newly gerrymandered districts have enough religious right Republicans to vote in their favor. Let's see how this turns out... - MannyHills, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@validus70: regardless of political views, after reading your post I want to gouge my eyes out from that horrendous spelling and grammar.
- AmishRefugee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4or we could raise minimum wage and use the obscene amounts of money that CEOs make to offset that
I think it was the CEO of Exxon Mobile that makes upwards of $100,000 A DAY, that will help keep companies like his from having to raise prices or fire employees - tmiller51, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You know, this has never happened after the other times the minimum wage was raised.
- BuffalOBisoN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That's why we need to vote Libertarian! Why not? The only other alternative is the Green Party. The 'Red Party' would be a more appropriate name.
- PiGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't care if the article is clearly biased, as it obviously must be from thinkprogress, but how about naming it appropriatly. Instead of "109 reasons to dump the 109th congress", just come out and say "109 ways the Republicans suck".
Searching for: "(R" to locate each negative comment about a republican yeilds FOURTY TWO results. Searching for "(D" yields none. - BuffalOBisoN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How can we convince Congress to give itself term limits? As Borat would say : "It would be niiiice!"
- minox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Powercow, were you ever a GOP fan? Judging by your comments in other articles, especially in reference to Clinton, it seems that you would be more of a democrat.
- Luv5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I am waiting for Republicans to blame Bill Clinton for their mistakes. Will Republicans ever take responsibility for their mistakes?
- AmishRefugee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4orange party ftw!
- shanesan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Unfortunately, the first "reason" is the exact opposite of what the founding fathers wanted.
"Congress set a record for the fewest number of days worked — 218 between the House and Senate combined."
The founding fathers put a law in that says that there is a bare minimum amount of times Congress has to come together to make decisions. The founding fathers were never expecting, and didn't WANT congress to come together every single day to pass laws! Now, we have congress coming together almost every day, all year, passing rediculous laws such as Torture = okay and Safety > Freedoms. The less they get together, the better! - VinceNoir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You are one sick individual. You oppose giving the needy (because people who must work minimum wage jobs are always in a desperate situation, or else they're teens) a much needed income boost. And you believe that if someone knows how to game the system to become wealthy, they deserve what they get? Truly a sick individual. I'll bet you read Ayn Rand at night and think she was spot on too. Sorry, but we shouldn't have to work THAT hard to make a living. Earning a decent living wage with minimal effort MUST be a guarantee for everyone in our society. Please note that I'm not talking wealth here. I'm talking about enough money to buy some food and afford decent housing that isn't rat infested or surrounded by bad neighborhoods. You must accept that some people are never going to put forth the effort to do more than the minumum and it is our collective duty to make sure they live decently. I suspect your view is that if they don't work super hard they should just die... Ass.
- BuffalOBisoN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Constitution Party is basically the 'Christian Party'. Better than the Republicrats, I'll give you that, but they still want to wage the 'War On Drugs' and want to ban abortion. No thanks.
- cjpro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The media needs to take an unbiased stance on political issues. I thought the premise of digg was to be unbiased too, but I notice that the stories that make it to the front page are pro-democrat. Yet, I find it amusing that most of the comments are then pro-republican. So I guess that balances out...
- Web_Weasel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@squeakywheel
Wow you really think a lot about your homophobia. Just FYI you are full of *****.
Added to ignore list like all other morons. - VinceNoir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Okay. I promised myself that I would try to not digg up people no matter what they say and I've stuck to that for a while now. But, dude, this is just splendid and spot on. I agree with your post and believe that it's time for citizen revolt. We've had enough!
- EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You mean their TERMs could have certain LIMITS of length...
I wonder what we could call it...
;) - Bullsnot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3OMG your are so wrong on so many points I deleted my post and quit trying to post a response to each of them.
- Slagged, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I say we should disolve the senate and give the regional governors direct control.
All according to my Evil Plan (tm)..... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Okay. I promised myself that I would try to not digg down people no matter what they say and I've stuck to that for a while now. But, dude, this is just stupid.
- oscarwp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Vote The Bastards Out. http://eightandfive.com/2006/11/07/lets-vote-the-bastards-out/
- elastikos, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Antichrist and Validus70, you guys are delusional about global warming.
- cjpro, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7I found this list sick. As soon as I saw it talking about how a raise in minimum raise was denied by congress, I stopped reading. I hate it with all this bias, that's why I'm libertarian.
Also, I would like to take this chance to point out that raising the minimum wage will make matters worse. Companies would have to pay more in expenses to their employees, so something has to give. We know that prices won't raise, so instead the company will downsize. This means rocketing unemployment rate. Come on, think it through before posting something like this! - iceperson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"The Mars data, if its even being interpreted correctly by you (which I doubt) is irrelevant."
You're right. Looking at another planet that shares our same heat source and seeing a correlation between rising temps is irrelevant... if you have an agenda. - egh3, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8After reading number 1, that should be a reason to _vote_ for the 109th Congress.
- jmzook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't agree with a good number of these reasons, but the others convince me that change is desperately needed. I am not sure if Ted "tubes" Stevens is up for reelection or not, but he needs to be out of congress by yesterday.
