Sony confirms internal depletion of 60GB PS3 supply
gamepro.com — Sony elaborated on previous comments made about 60GB PS3 inventory stock on Wednesday, confirming that only retail supply of the $499 machine remains and suggesting that the expected 80GB price drop is imminent.

- username9000, on 10/10/2007, -25/+10If they drop the price of the 80 gig before the New Year there are gonna be some pissed off PS3 owners...you know the one's that bought the 80 gig version for $599.00. Even if they drop the bundle and reduce it to $499.00, those people that bought the 80 gig still get *****.
- etgoboom, on 10/10/2007, -3/+29noobody made them buy it, they could've waited like other people did. I bought the ps3 a month before the pricedrop, sure it sucks, but its nothing worth getting angry about.
- WhereAmI, on 10/10/2007, -17/+5I dont know why anyone would pay 100$ for an extra 20GB anyway. Idiots.
- grat2001, on 10/10/2007, -5/+21You also get Motorstorm, so it's not as bad as you make it sound.
- explodey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Minus Motorstorm, They pay $40 for the extra 20GB, idiot.
- samdu, on 10/10/2007, -5/+14Damned if they do, damned if they don't. That said, I fully expect the 80GB unit to drop at least $100 when the 60s are gone.
- popfrogs, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Yep, and by then there will be yet another SKU, this time with a 65nm processor, a smaller heatsink, even quieter and less power-hungry than the older SKU, and with a 100 or 120GB hard drive. And maybe some games.
But hey, it's all speculation.- mywhitenoise, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Are we still talking about the PS3? They basically only have 1 SKU on the market now. Not 5 SKUs like some other company, who can't even get one SKU done right.

- hoowahman, on 10/10/2007, -8/+3Holycrap and guess what if they drop it by the end of the year that means you get to play a ps3 for 4 more months than someone that bought it for 100 less...thats 25 bucks a month to play a gaming system for how many hours? Stop complaining
- username9000, on 10/10/2007, -11/+8That'd be great if there was 4 months worth of games on it. lmao At this point in time there is maybe 40 hours worth of gaming for that POS. I know I have one.
- hoowahman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6? why are people buying them then?
- logicalnoise, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3gotta play blu-rays on something.

- Cerialthriller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11when you buy something in the beginning you should know going into it that there are going to be price drops in the future. This is very common in the technology world, early adopters always pay alot more then the people who wait, thats just how it works.
- SnuKs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2replace "some" and "those people" with "username9000"
- remzeus, on 10/10/2007, -16/+4I suggest you buy from retail stores that offers discount. I got my PS3 with 30% discount from trading my old nonworking Playstation(PS1).
- animalmuther76, on 07/30/2008, -2/+12a store gave you 180 bucks for a broken ps1???? what was in it for them????
- logicalnoise, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I know many audiophiles rave about the audio chipset having terrific fidelity when playing music cds but I doubt that crossed the store's minds.

- badassninja, on 10/10/2007, -26/+11And this marks the first time in PS3 history that something was sold out.
- gavroche, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2The 20gb version?
- logicalnoise, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8both due to being discontinued but PS3 did in fact sell out of their launch shipments.
- gavroche, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2The 20gb version?
- grat2001, on 10/10/2007, -12/+1I highly doubt they are out, more like they shifted all their 60GB stock to other markets. This way a price cut in November will sell more PS3's like the last $100 cut did.
- SqueakyWheel, on 10/10/2007, -6/+8They will not sell out until Black Friday
- SnuKs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Plus I'm sure stores will put them on sale in order to clear the 60gb stock on Black Friday.
- ericrous, on 10/10/2007, -9/+1Sony is going into this Christmas STRONG. With only the $600 new console available, a lineup of not one, but TWO mediocre games, and all the buzz among hardcore gamers for "Home," they got some MUSCLE. Compare that to the 360, with its forgettable titles like Bioshock, Gears of War, Halo 3, and Mass Effect--combined with its focus on online gaming (what serious gamer really gives a rat's ass about THAT?), MS is looking to take a serious ass-whoppin' from Sony by the time Santa visits.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Halo, and Mass Effect. Bioshock, and Gears can also be played on Macs (when running Windows) and PCs
Resistance, Motorstorm, Ninja Gaiden, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Ratchet and Clank, and Uncharted?
Which will I take? I guess the one that wont crap out on me first.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Halo, and Mass Effect. Bioshock, and Gears can also be played on Macs (when running Windows) and PCs
- Dextrose, on 10/10/2007, -20/+28Buried as severely INACCURATE.
There is NO new news in that article regarding any statement from Sony indicating a price drop for the 80GB model. They (GamePro) just regurgitated "assumptions" (regarding an 80GB price cut) from the time when the original price cut for the 60GB model was announced.- AntBing, on 10/10/2007, -12/+2You must be new, welcome to Digg.
- Dextrose, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Sounds to me like you're the new one here. I can sniff out a ***** article description from a mile away -- and this description is a total crock. Yes, it's true that Sony confirmed the 60GB is sold out internally. But their recent statement mentioned ONLY that fact -- and said nothing about the 80GB price being cut.
- jackal42, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15A lie is halfway round the world before the truth has got its boots on
- jtbndy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19So this quote....
""We no longer have any inventory in SCEA warehouses. All inventory has been purchased and shipped to retailers," Sony's Dave Karraker said in an email."
Is not a confirmation of internal depletion of the PS3 at Sony?
Its not like the person who submitted this claimed "Confirmation of 80GB Price drop." All that was confirmed in the quote was the depletion of Sony's inventory of the 60GB.
So how again is this innaccurate?- SteveMax, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Yes, there is NO new news in that article regarding any statement from Sony indicating a price drop for the 80GB model. And the description claims that the depletion of the 60GB model "suggest[s] that the expected 80GB price drop is imminent", which is inaccurate.
- spyder91, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9You buried an article inaccurate for something it didn't claim? Interesting. I'm pretty sure the title says internal depletion of the 60GB, and the article simply mentioned that Sony had alluded to the possibility of an 80GB price drop in July. The article and title are cohesive with the truth.
- AntBing, on 10/10/2007, -12/+2You must be new, welcome to Digg.
- readme, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Even if the 80GB drops to $499 a 60GB is well worth it now as it has the PS2 chips and the 80GB does not. The price on the 80GB is most certainly dropping. It cost much less to produce and they won't bundle Motorstorm with it The only question is: $499 or less?
- Rileyper, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2the 80gig doesnt have ps2 emulation, thats news to me
- DangerMouse9, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12It's software emulated, not hardware emulated.
- iceperson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7You have it backwards, the 60gig doesn't have ps2 emulation (it actually has PS2 hardware). The 80 gig uses emulation to play PS2 games.
- DarkDx, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0But a firmware update disabled the EE chip in 60gb models, so you're running it with software anyway... :(
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Not true. That was only true for developers' units (dev kits). For consumer units, if you have the PS2 hardware (the EE), it is used to play PS2 games.

- crashingechelon, on 10/10/2007, -6/+8Looks like I have to hurry and get that 60gb model for the emotion engine so I don't have to rely on emulation for my horde of PS2 games.
- BobsYourUncle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Or you could keep your PS2.
- Trent0090, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't see the big deal on having to rely on emulation, if you still play xbox games on the 360 then you rely on emulation. So far I have been able to play KOTOR fine on my 360, so I say just wait till the 80 drops. By the way why do we need so many gigs? It seems pointless unless you also download a bunch of movies on it as well.
- tatical, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Metal Gear Solid 2 (and a few of my other games) still don't work on the 360.

- JamesMorris, on 10/10/2007, -19/+3***** you Sony. I bought my ps3 on launch for £425 ala $850. Then 2 months after you drop the price and give away some pussy bundle, and now you're dropping it again.

- reed311, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Yeah it sucks. But, seriously, you must have known that at such a high price they would need to drop it pretty quickly to make up some ground? I'm not really sure why anyone bought a PS3 at launch anyways, the games weren't there (and still aren't). Yeah, you've got Blu-Ray, but that format may lose out in the end.

I hate to break it to Sony, but adding more Gb doesn't fix the PS3. They should focus their efforts instead on making a phone/handheld gaming device since they have met with such success in the handheld gaming market.
And it should be shaped like a taco.
And taste like a taco.
***** it they should just sell tacos.
I'm hungry...- macbookpromat, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2I'd like myself a pink taco, then if there's still room, regular tacos and beer.
- def1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4what are you....12?
- m4szyman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Actually it does fix the PS3 - the biggest problem with the PS3 for most people is the price and the reason the price is so high is due to manufacturing costs. Since Sony loses money on the consoles the only way to drop the price is to cut manufacturing costs and, believe it or not, it is cheaper for them to put 80gig hard drives in the machine. That combined with the fact that they are taking out the emotion engine and using software emulation means that we will probably see 80gig models below $500 sooner than later.
- iucraigmc, on 10/10/2007, -5/+0True, I often asked people this question when the PS3 was first coming to market: Just how do you squeeze a $1400 computer into a $600 dollar box? Well... it's simple, first, you make the parts with the cheapest components you can find, and then you limit your manufacturing until the technology goes down in price. This is why people see so many problems with the first few generations of the 360 and will probably see problems with the PS3. The reality is they are operating at a loss until the technology gets cheaper. Little did they realize it's not the system that makes people purchase the product, its the games. This is why PS3 is struggling right now, I'd give it a year, maybe two and you will see a dramatic turnaround in people wanting a PS3 because newer more exclusive titles will be available. Right now it's simply not worth it. Microsoft bought out some killer developers (because that's how MS operates) and that is why the 360 is a great system. It's not the technology, although it definitely helps, its the quality of the games. People will buy an X-box for Gears of War alone.
- Starflyer59, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6"People will buy an X-box for Gears of War alone."

- iceperson, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Yeah. Clearly Sony should drop out of the console market since they can't seem to compete. What's that? Their last gen console sells double what Microsoft's current gen does???? Oh, nvm...
- Aneurhythmia, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0And they can ride that wave forever, never having to work at making a product competitive again.
Just like Nintendo did.
And Sega.
And Atari.
And...- triplehelix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2none of those companies have had a console sell 115 MILLION units, and still have new games comming out for it in year 8.

- Listor, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8If you havent bought your 60gb ps3 buy one now. In the 80gb version there is no emotion engine.
Emotion engine = hardware emulation for ps1 and ps2 games
no emotion engine = weak software emulation of all of your old favorites- fani, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Have there been any comparisons done to show what the effect of emotion engine v/s non emotion engine is ?
This is all speculation that no emotion engine = weak emulation.
And to be really honest, I thought a lot about backward compatibility when I bought Xbox360 but haven't played a single original Xbox game on Xbox360. BC is irrelevant for me. I have the xbox ( for xbmc obviously ) and ps2 ( for HDloader hack obviously )sitting right next to xbox360. I can just as well put the disc in xbox and play.
BC isn't that big a deal when you think about it. And PS2 is super awesome with the HDLoader hack. Leave a PS1 trigger disc in and put all your games on a massive 320GB HDD and voila. No getting up to find PS2 DVD's.
I'm sure I don't care much about PS3 backward compatibility either. ( It does have powerful processors so even software emulation will do the job well just like xbox360 ) - theaceoffire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Also, the 60GB's emotion engine can probably be turned off with a firmware update, so that we also get the benefits of ps2 emulation (Smoothed edges, etc).
^_^ And since I can buy a new hard drive (And probably will, already filled up the 60 with movies and demos), I don't mind getting it early rather than waiting for the 80 GB one.
O.O oh, and this thing is DEAD quiet. Even running Resistance or Folding at Home...- Sutanreyu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3...We already have those "benefits".
PS1/2 upscaling and smoothed edges.
- Sutanreyu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3...We already have those "benefits".
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The Emotion Engine isn't used to emulate PS1. PS1 titles are emulated in software on all PS3s.

- magaman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think the quote is "Who Didn't see this coming"
- LaughingDjinn, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5With Amazon's current deal where you get the PS3 and 3 Blu-Ray's for $475 (plus the 5 more through the mail in rebate) the 60GB stock may go faster than you think.
- chhenry, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0I havent been able to get that deal again. I tried it (got to the confirm screen) the first day I saw it. Since then i can only get 8 movies + ps3 for $499.
- Wiinii, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/30/ps3-60gb-are-officially-all-out-in-the-wild/
"PC World reports all the 60GB PS3s are out of the house and looking for a home. Sony's Dave Karraker confirms, "We no longer have any inventory in SCEA warehouses. All inventory has been purchased and shipped to retailers." So, if you still want a PS3 without limited backwards compatibility, here's your last chance. Once the 60GB sell out, that's all she wrote.
Now, we have to ask, was it all a clearance sale or will the 80GB drop down to the $499 price once the channel is cleared? Karraker says, "We won't be making any further announcements ... until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated." Place your bets if it'll be before or after the holiday. Whatever it takes to build that install base at this point." - Pureeviljester, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3The 60 GB price cut gained them a 60% boost, of course they'll lower the price after evaluation.
- ganzhimself, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Even though I don't have a massive PS2 library, I'm glad I snagged the 60GB with the emotion engine chip. I didn't realize that the 80GB model was going to a shiesty PS2 software emulation.
- icsbase, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0That 80GB price is not going to drop.
- explodey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0EVER, just like the PS2 I paid $299 for, or the PS1 I paid $299 for.
- samy26, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0So, where that leave the new PS3 [80GB] since apparently it no longer has the PS2 chip of some sort for one reason or another? What will be the disadvantages without the chip and heck why did they even remove it in the first place?
- Pureeviljester, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1the real question is; 20 gig more or complete backward compatability?
