40GB PS3s run cooler, quieter, use less energy
joystiq.com — A report from German site Computer Base reveals that consumers giving up backward compatibility on their 40GB PS3s are at least getting something in return. The new systems utilize the new 65nm version of the Cell processor, reducing the power usage from 200 watts to 135 and further limiting the heat and noise the system gives off.

- deepmenace, on 11/02/2007, -3/+70200 to 135? that is a huge benefit.
makes those 40gb models look a whole lot more tempting.- mywhitenoise, on 11/02/2007, -0/+28I know, I don't care that I paid more for my 60GB model, the BC, SACD support, and the console itself is worth it. But when I found out it runs cooler and quieter I got pretty jealous.
- dsmx, on 11/02/2007, -2/+10Yep you can run an extra 60 Watt lightbulb now and still use less power than before.
- shredswithpiks, on 11/06/2007, -18/+2will buy one when there's something worth playing (read: when GT5 is on shelves)
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 11/02/2007, -12/+1Yeah maybe now I can plug in my 3 PS3's.
Oh wait. nvm.- ItsMyWii, on 11/02/2007, -1/+7Ha. Only three? I have four.
- DarkShroud, on 11/02/2007, -1/+1This would make a great buy as a second Blu-ray player/Folding@Home box. And it would even play my PS3 games.
- phoenixp3k, on 11/06/2007, -2/+38That is a pretty interesting drop in power consumption. Wasn't there a story about being less fans in the 40GB version? That would explain why :-)
- hiro, on 11/03/2007, -1/+12Fewer fans
- Tahiri, on 10/31/2007, -3/+2PS3 only had one fan to begin with.
A HUGE fan.
- jacksons98, on 11/02/2007, -2/+69My 60gb is already whisper quiet. I didn't think they could make it any quieter. That's pretty amazing actually.
- mywhitenoise, on 11/01/2007, -18/+9Mine's loud as hell when i'm watching movies...you would think that's when the PS3 needs fans the least.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/31/2007, -4/+9ha, I'm getting dugg down for telling the truth? I've been watching Arrested Development, and Nip/Tuck for weeks on it, and about 15 minutes into a show the PS3's fans get ridiculously loud.
Look at my history, i'm more pro-PS3 than I am for any other console.- R3Dirkulous, on 10/31/2007, -0/+4he speaks the truth, pro ps3 i tell ya
- BattleScars, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2He's still in a minority though. Very few people have noise or heat problems with their PS3s.
- R3Dirkulous, on 10/31/2007, -0/+4he speaks the truth, pro ps3 i tell ya
- WhereAmI, on 10/31/2007, -2/+2Dude you watch Nip/Tuck too? I thought I was the only one. That show is freaking interesting...and hot. anyway thats the Blu-Ray drive spinning constantly mostly and the fans just add to it.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/31/2007, -1/+1Yeah, a lot of people watch Nip/Tuck! New season starts tomorrow.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/31/2007, -4/+9ha, I'm getting dugg down for telling the truth? I've been watching Arrested Development, and Nip/Tuck for weeks on it, and about 15 minutes into a show the PS3's fans get ridiculously loud.
- dbxz, on 11/02/2007, -3/+17i believe that noise is coming from the dvd drive and not the fans...
- xXGeechXx, on 10/31/2007, -1/+10Its infinitly quieter than whisper quiet.
- digid, on 11/05/2007, -9/+6I will start a movie and it's pretty quiet and then after a while it turns into a $500 hair dryer.
- pfromg, on 11/28/2007, -0/+1dito !
- Eallan, on 11/02/2007, -3/+9My 360 sounds like a cheap piece of crap after listening to my PS3.
Though, the 360 gets way more playtime.
- mywhitenoise, on 11/01/2007, -18/+9Mine's loud as hell when i'm watching movies...you would think that's when the PS3 needs fans the least.
- evozero, on 11/02/2007, -1/+31This actually seems like a well thought out base model. Enough value differentiation to make the $499 ps3 appealing to certain people, but also enough features that it doesn't seem stripped to *****. While it is still at a price that puts it well above the offerings of Nintendo and Microsoft, it is a step in the right direction. I wonder how much less power it uses (in actual game playing) than the 60gb ps3.
- eurocrisp, on 11/02/2007, -1/+3About 65 watts.
- r81984, on 11/02/2007, -28/+2Above the offerings of Nintendo and Microsoft???
The 40gb ps3 does not even have an hdmi port and only 2 usb ports.
The HD cannot be upgraded either.
At least when you buy the arcade version of the Xbox you can upgrade the HD later and make it is the same as the more expensive Xbox.
At least with the Wii you will have more games and better game play. Sony said it was impossible to have rumble and motion sensors in the same controller and Nintendo proved them wrong while making a profit.- jacksons98, on 11/02/2007, -0/+16All PS3's have HDMI. What are you talking about. And do you need to post your flat out lies more than once?
And yes the Harddrive can be upgraded too. - otatop, on 11/02/2007, -0/+15It has HDMI, and you can upgrade the hard drive, plus it has built in wifi. You = fail.
- jacksons98, on 11/02/2007, -0/+16All PS3's have HDMI. What are you talking about. And do you need to post your flat out lies more than once?
- truspector, on 11/02/2007, -76/+5Too bad nobody wants one.
- xOpifex, on 11/02/2007, -3/+72I think you're confusing the PS3 with your opinion.
- TehSwat, on 11/02/2007, -4/+32Worth logging in for digging you up.
- shinythingy, on 11/02/2007, -4/+8No truspector's word is actual fact, didn't you hear?
- triplehelix, on 11/02/2007, -2/+14if xbox fans weren't scared of the truth, these numbers wouldn't have been buried twice in the past two days:
http://digg.com/gaming_news/PS3_outsells_the_360_b ...
btw, don't bother digging it, its already been buried, so has no shot at hitting the front page.- WhereAmI, on 11/02/2007, -1/+10The PS3 has sold just as well as the 360 in terms of launch date to present date(like PS3s launch to now, the same timeframe for the 360, its launch to however many days the PS3 has been out.) In fact, 5,590,000 PS3s have been sold.
- ubergeek09, on 11/06/2007, -15/+2Wow, look at all the Sony fanboys burying you for stating a fact.
- krische, on 11/02/2007, -1/+8Maybe because it isn't fact? The facts have stated that the PS3 outsold the 360 in 2007.

- ctrlfreak13, on 11/02/2007, -2/+13Just wait for Gran Turismo 5.
- mywhitenoise, on 11/02/2007, -3/+21I've been playing Ratchet and Clank non stop for a week.
- staticneuron, on 11/02/2007, -0/+18Not this again. Normally followed by a comment about the PS3 exclusive and great performing multiplatform tiles. Only to be countered by hey those ports are on the 360. Only to be countered back most PS3 owners may not have BOTH consoles so your arguement is weak not to mention the fact that even if a game did run slightly better on the 360 it doesn't make it a horrible game on the PS3.
Phew...... I have seen so many troll and fanboy comments I can write a novel..... maybe make it to the best seller list.- geartype2, on 10/31/2007, -0/+5thank you for mentioning that.
- rreadysetno, on 10/31/2007, -3/+2It wouldn't be a very long one, you'd just keep repeating yourself over and over again!
- hockey, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1Submit the text to digg for proofreading first.
- BabyWookie, on 10/31/2007, -3/+5Is Tekken 6 still set for this year? I bought a 60 GB PS3, before they were all gone, plus Best Buy had Heavenly Sword free with it, but I still haven't unpacked it. Trying to decide whether I should keep it. If Tekken 6 is coming out this year, it would make the decision a lot easier.
- shinythingy, on 11/02/2007, -1/+7Play it before you make a decision moron. How ***** else are you going to know if you should return it. I swear digg has more retards than any other site on the internet. By quite a large amount.
- BabyWookie, on 10/31/2007, -5/+1Forget to take your meds today, kiddo?
- BabyWookie, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1Hey, ***** boy and everyone who dugg him up: I don't need to play this particular 60GB unit to know what PS3 is like. I have these people around me called "friends", a couple of whom just happen to own PS3s. I played plenty of PS3 games and watched plenty of BR movies. I am just trying to decide whether I really want to spend $500 on a BR player that also plays two or three games that interest me. You see, I am actually a responsible adult with a lot of expenses other than video games. That is my only dilemma. If that makes me a "moron" or a "retard" in your mind, than I'm afraid that you don't have much of a grasp on reality.
BTW, if you think that Digg truly has more tards than something like MySpace, Yahoo message boards of YouTube, then you must be smoking crack. Have a good day.

- beean45, on 11/02/2007, -47/+6Oh good, now more people can afford a quieter piece of crap with even less games.
- mywhitenoise, on 11/02/2007, -7/+17No, you're thinking of the Wii.
- DAaaMan64, on 11/02/2007, -2/+15No he isn't thinking of anything. Not the PS3, WII, or 360.
- samdu, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3I pretty sure he just wasn't thinking period. Hive mind and all.

- ikrit2006, on 11/02/2007, -15/+3I'm sure Sony is only putting the 65nm chip in the 40gb version... </sarcasm>
- louiedog, on 11/02/2007, -7/+1You're right, it probably will show up in the larger one soon. Unfortunately, it may take awhile since the PS3 sales aren't the fastest in the console world. Who knows how much stock they have.
- santasing, on 11/02/2007, -1/+3The 40GB models actually come with the 65nm chip. Do a google search.
- macromorgan, on 11/02/2007, -7/+74Thank god this has the 65nm chip in it. That means it's less prone to getting the red ring of... wait... nevermind.
- Christbait, on 11/02/2007, -23/+3It's amazing that you know how to switch the thing on.
- rusty123jimi, on 11/02/2007, -2/+6lol...thats right!
- DPimp1262, on 11/02/2007, -4/+45Sony already is using the 65 nm chips? Wow considering how long it took Microsoft to finally implement the smaller cooler chips it's pretty amazing to see sony reducing their chip size not even 1 year after the system's launch.
- r81984, on 11/02/2007, -24/+2They had the 65mm chips at the PS3 launch.
They already produced the millions of defective cell processors and had to use them first.
If the PS3 waiting until this year for their launch they might have been successful and all the bugs could have been fixed.- jacksons98, on 11/02/2007, -0/+15Seriously dude WTF? Every post you've done on PS3 is a flat out lie.
- makkaveli19, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2wait what bugs?? . .

- AttackingHobo, on 11/01/2007, -25/+6Sony... Sony... Sony... You have already proven to us that you can make quality hardware, now just make some quality software to back it up and you have a winner.
- krische, on 11/02/2007, -0/+7Seriously? I thought digg was supposed to have intelligent people on it. Do some research kid. Ratchet and Clank, Warhawk, Motorstorm, Resistance. All good games, all exclusive.

- Sparser, on 10/31/2007, -17/+0I just wish mine could play all those PSP games I've been missing out on.
- heatian, on 11/02/2007, -33/+2A cooler, quieter piece of crap...props to sony for improving the hardware so quickly, but it just doesn't matter...the ps3 cannot previal.
- plizard, on 11/02/2007, -17/+4and isn't backwards compatible!
- scabbers, on 11/02/2007, -6/+6They probably want to keep selling ps2 replacements to people.
- Syphon8, on 11/02/2007, -22/+2Sony, we hardly knew ye.
It's too bad they messed the launch up so bad. - r81984, on 11/02/2007, -36/+3No HDMI port = not a real bluray player
No backwards compatability means no games.
WTF??? Why would anyone buy a PS3?- eryximachus, on 11/02/2007, -1/+15Umm, all PS3 models have an HDMI port.
- jacksons98, on 11/02/2007, -0/+13All PS3s have HDMI. You want B/C pick up the 60gb or 80gb, or a used PS2 for $30.
- r81984, on 11/02/2007, -14/+3Bluray is a dying technology. Why should you have to pay more for it?
At least with Xbox the HD player is extra if you want one.- jacksons98, on 11/02/2007, -3/+11Since when is Blu-ray dying? It's outsold HD-DVD every single week of this year. Including the last few weeks when Transformers came out. You know HD-DVD's supposed savior. If anything you should be asking yourself why MS doesn't give you a Blu-ray option instead.
- Sethbacca, on 11/02/2007, -2/+1Actually the 20gb PS3 did not have HDMI. Although it's not for sale anymore so *shrug* just saying.
- DarkShroud, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2Actually yes they did.
- r81984, on 11/02/2007, -14/+3Bluray is a dying technology. Why should you have to pay more for it?

- drakino, on 11/02/2007, -2/+7No HDMI on what? Every PS3 has HDMI, and that includes the new 40gb unit.
- ubergeek09, on 11/02/2007, -26/+2But who cares? There aren't any amazing games for it, and it doesn't look like there will be any anytime soon. Also this has no HDMI port so why would you want a Blu-Ray player then? No backwards compatibility? People can't play their old games, they have to use their old PS2.. I don't understand why ANYONE would want to buy this, it's worse than the normal PS3 and that's saying something.
- jacksons98, on 11/02/2007, -0/+12All PS3s have HDMI, you are wrong. Please insert coin and try again
- HappyScrappy, on 11/02/2007, -0/+12Ratchet & Clank is great, and it came out a couple days ago. Ninja Gaiden Sigma is very well reviewed also.
Don't bother posting that there are no games if you're just not going to look and see what there is before posting. - YojimboJango, on 11/02/2007, -2/+1I haven't chosen between an 360 or PS3 yet (I have a wii and PC and that's kept me busy enough). I'm personally loving how much the early adopters got screwed over. Remember people shelling out $3000 for a PS3?
- wafflesomd, on 11/02/2007, -19/+2Got any good games yet?
- MASTERPL, on 11/02/2007, -0/+9Ratchet and Clank. System Seller.

- Anorhc, on 11/02/2007, -1/+31Why the hell are you guys saying that it doesn't have an HDMI port when it really does?
- shinythingy, on 11/02/2007, -1/+16idiocy prevails
- krische, on 11/02/2007, -2/+18They are probably still mad by the fact that HALO wasn't really HD like they were lead to believe.
- HumanRecall, on 11/02/2007, -21/+1And why wouldn't it of course it would run cooler and be less quiet -cause it hasn't sold or even left the freakin shelf MORON !!
Hard to argue with logic when consumers aren't buying this garbage and actually turning the things on - laying dormant on shelves would definitely make it running cooler and sound quieter as it's it not being used or powered on !!!- shinythingy, on 11/02/2007, -0/+3Whats your PSN name again? I ask because you sound like someone that has actually used one long enough to form a decent opinion.
- Schmapdi, on 11/02/2007, -0/+17It's always nice when they can cut back on power consumption and heat & noise output. Shrinking die size is a win-win. Though it is pretty rare for it to happen so early in a products lifecycle.
- senatorpjt, on 11/02/2007, -0/+7That's what happens when hardware is made by a hardware company.
- eurocrisp, on 11/01/2007, -4/+15I Knew it! Early on I was saying "I'm going to wait until the price drops and the hardware is revised before I buy a PS3." I'm just glad it happened so soon. Hopefully this system this Christmas season will unbury the needle of Playstation's demographic enthusiasm meter out from the "totally *****" zone and bring it into "cautiously optimistic". I think there are still a lot of people who want PS3's... the excitement is still there for many who have had their hopes and expectations dampened somewhat by the original price point, (which probably has everything to do with completely new hardware being rushed for a competitive launch in the first place) but now have the chance to get the system for the price they were hoping to pay (free from santa!!) originally and with a few more games to choose from. I still have hope for Sony. If the system does fairly well this season, the 3rd parties should be more inclined to develop software for it soon after, knowing their investment will have a better chance of yielding profits.
p.s. anyone who wastes energy wishing ill against sony's playstation franchise (or microsoft's xbox, for that matter) needs to get over themselves. A VIDEO GAME CONSOLE IS A TOOL OF ENTERTAINMENT, NOT AN OUTLET FOR EXERCISING PREJUDICE.- dmcbride6, on 11/02/2007, -10/+1not sure why you are glad.
The whole no backwards compatibility thing gets me. If I ever bought a PS3 - I would need to be damn sure I could play PS2 games on it. They are, afterall, some of the best...Didnt they even dumb down the 80GB model? the 60GB and 80GB now sell for the same price at some local stores around me.- senatorpjt, on 10/31/2007, -5/+1The thing that I don't understand is why they took HW compatibility out of the 80GB. Seems like you'd at least want a top end and entry level model.
- harreola, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2I already have a PS2 to play my PS2 games. If it means cutting the price and not including BC, then I'm all for it.
- king_kobra, on 11/02/2007, -0/+8the ps3 is not failing or as you worded it " totally ***** " because in Europe and Asia the ps3 is outselling the xbox, it is only slow in north america, not sure why
- breaker01, on 11/02/2007, -1/+1Yeah, I've been waiting to buy a PS3 for a price drop and to make sure it's a stable system. I bought launches of the 360 and Wii, haven't had any problems yet, but the price tag for the PS3 was a little too much.
- volacide, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1The only thing is you don't get any backwards compatibility or upscaled PS2/PS1 games. That's kind of a bummer but for the price the PS3 is still a steal just because of the Blu-Ray support. I'm still glad I went with the 60gb.
- DarkShroud, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1the 40gig does play PS1 games. So it should be able to upscale them as well.
- dmcbride6, on 11/02/2007, -10/+1not sure why you are glad.
- exomni, on 11/02/2007, -1/+5That's a big drop in power consumption. This model is definitely the better deal, taking into account your power bill :)
- krische, on 11/02/2007, -0/+12Wait, it actually run quieter than it already does? I have a hard time hearing my fan in a silent room the way it is.
- mrsatan, on 11/02/2007, -0/+8This is an excellent move by Sony. The life of the PS3 will be extended and it also might save the lives of some of your other hot running components in the long run. Now that the PS3 is finally picking up some steam with some good titles it will see some better sales. It was smart move to make a cheaper model even if they had to gut a couple of the more minor features. I mean, who doesn't have a PS2 lying around somewhere to play games on? You would have to buy that stupid memory card adapter anyways so its not a total loss. Personally, when I get some money I am going to pickup one of these new ones, the only thing that irks me about it is the lack of more usb ports but that means just picking up a usb hub or something along those lines.
- joecruz, on 11/02/2007, -0/+6I was planning to buy the 80 GB unit until i read this article, now I'm buying the 40 GB model. I'm just curious about what SACD playback is? this model doesn't have it along with backwards compatibility
- somesthetic, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3there are these things called Super Audio Compact Discs. you can buy them at best buy I think.
they're super.- highdesi, on 10/31/2007, -3/+0but how are they different from regular audio cds???
- Trat, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2They contain uncompressed music at a much higher bitrate and conversion than regular CDs. This manifests itself in a better soundquality but it also means the audio is full of frequencies we humans cannot hear. Nobody really cares for this, since we all don't percieve anything different when listening to a MP3 as opposed to the regular audio CD. Hence, everyone buying MP3s and forgetting about CDs as a audio medium.
- YojimboJango, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1I bought the linkin park sacd and it was came in native 5.1 surround sound.
- highdesi, on 10/31/2007, -3/+0but how are they different from regular audio cds???

- need4speed, on 11/02/2007, -13/+1sony's strategy is very well thougt out. since there are no aaa games out for ps3.. sony might as well as sucker people into buying a olding@home machine by introducing this 40gb model.
- t0ny, on 10/31/2007, -6/+2I like the warmer ones, at least in the winter. Get cold? Just turn on the ps3 and run folding at home.
- pidge, on 11/05/2007, -0/+8I wish the 40GB model had 802.11n. It is pretty cool that the CPU has been shrunk. I love my 60GB model. Can't wait for 2008. GT5, MGS4, LBP oh my.
- Trat, on 10/31/2007, -0/+0802.11n would be great.
- chiisu, on 11/02/2007, -0/+16I think I foresee a PS3 joining my Wii soon...
- ambo33, on 10/31/2007, -0/+4i just recently did this exact same thing with a 60GB model :D
