- psa21, on 08/20/2009, -7/+159because it costs less
- Vandalizer, on 08/20/2009, -3/+126If the PS2 wasn't so close in monthly sales to that of the PS3 then I'm sure we would see the PS3 slim have backwards capability. It's about the money and the PS2 is still selling very well.
- Ajajadude, on 08/20/2009, -10/+57I have a bunch of PS2 games and a b/c PS3, but I've only spent about 10 hours playing PS2 games over the past 2+ years.
If you happen to be using the standard issue A/V cables for the PS3 (not HDMI or component) and one more console is too much for your poor tv, then buy one of those fancy input selectors. And your dammed plugs aren't going to be "worn" out from plugging and unplugging them.
Basically, you're stretching this far too thin. Either you want a PS3 on the cheap or you want b/c. It seems some people will never be satisfied. The fact that the overwhelming majority of people use their PS3 for PS3 games proves Sony made the right decision: cut the costs where they can. - coheedcollapse, on 08/20/2009, -5/+40What the hell does this mean?
"Disappointment, one extra console to purchase to waste space and collect dust."
I'm sorry, but chances are if you don't already have a PS2 sitting around, you're not going to rush out and pick up a bunch of games for it the second you buy a PS3. At least the majority of people won't.
I own a Microsoft console for the first time this generation and I haven't picked up a single original Xbox game yet. Considering the already cheap price of used games on either system, I've been busy enough as it is playing current gen games.
Backwards compatibility is a great thing to have if you have a large collection of games from the console before, but honestly, saving $100 is worth dragging out your damn PS2. - removesstains, on 08/20/2009, -1/+32Dugg for that fact that the picture used in the article is neither a PS3 fat or PS3 Slim.
- Foxhound1979, on 08/20/2009, -7/+35Agree with Vandalizer. Sony will eventually add BC when they decide that the PS2 is dead. They already did emulation with one of the earlier PS3 sku's. Only a matter of time and wjy kill something that is still making Sony money??
- inactive, on 08/20/2009, -2/+27At least the PS3 won't have to pay for two seats on an airplane.
- gamers403, on 08/20/2009, -0/+22Spam more affiliate links please
- tensaibaka, on 08/20/2009, -21/+42While Mr. Koller's argument is valid, he's not thinking about the fact that means we have to hook up yet ANOTHER console to the TV to play PS2 games. Some of us have more than one gaming platform, PLUS DVR's, meaning we'll have to have numerous things plugged in to the TV, otherwise we have to keep unplugging and hooking up different systems just to play. After a while I can see how connections might fail if you have to constantly reconnect everytime you want to switch out a component, (especially if its a child or teen that's doing it.) I like Nintendo as well, but at least they kept the one generation backwards compatibility with the Wii.
- sodbustin, on 08/20/2009, -3/+22I sympathize with the guy. I'm using an Atari 800 right now because today's PCs don't run Star Raiders.
- Zamfir, on 08/20/2009, -2/+20Kotaku (rather Spamaku) rarely has an article worth reading.
If BC was so important to people, maybe they should have supported the feature and bought a PS3 back in 2006/2007? If running Linux on your PS3 is important to you, why not buy a PS3 now - you do know the older models have been reduced to $299?
Since you already have 2 60GB PS3's with BC - what the ***** are you complaining about? How many PS3's do you need? I don't think Sony cares if they are 'failing to please' the guy who already has 2 PS3's since you are obviously not the intended audience for the new model.
Number one complaint people had about the PS3 was the price. Sony finally fixed that, yet people still find stupid stuff to complain about. Just be happy you have TWO fully-featured PS3's... - 9bpm9, on 08/20/2009, -5/+21The PS2 also has a plethora of amazing games and games still be made for it. The Xbox game library isn't even on the same level as the PS2 library.
- Brasky, on 08/20/2009, -2/+18"Disappointment, one extra console to waste space and collect dust."
If your PS2 will be wasting space and collecting dust then you probably aren't too interested in playing PS2 games. Wasn't that the point of the article? - rwiggum, on 08/20/2009, -2/+17He's not saying the Xbox game library was *****, because it wasn't. Obviously there were tons of great games for Xbox. But it was NOTHING compared to the PS2 library.
- chicagospur, on 08/20/2009, -2/+15It can. My 80 Gig PS3 from last year doesn't have the Emotion chip and emulates PS2 in software.
This is a marketing decision. - s73v3r, on 08/20/2009, -0/+13Theoretically, you could consolodate the NES, SNES, Atari and Genesis to emulators on the HTPC, and free up some outlet space.
- inactive, on 08/20/2009, -3/+15Who needs backwards compatibility when you've got a modded PS2 that can play imported and downloaded games??
;D - gamben0, on 08/20/2009, -1/+13Because they're still selling ps2s. $99 at Walmart now.
- KMartSheriff, on 08/20/2009, -0/+11And because they're still selling the PS2, which is selling very well.
- QuadraQ, on 08/20/2009, -4/+15This is totally ridiculous. The point is simple. I don't want two consoles using two cable connections to my TV and Receiver when one console should be able to do the job. Not only that, but I have an HDTV and I want my favorite PS2 games to look their best, and the original PS3 did this. I don't care HOW they do it, but backward compatibility will ALWAYS be important. Why they are fighting this I can't imagine, but they will continue to loose customers as long as they do.
- jholden42, on 08/20/2009, -6/+17Wait, they were expensive? Why was that? Was it because they had more features than the current models? Like, for example, basically having a PS2 built into them?
- inactive, on 08/20/2009, -0/+10worst ***** article ever. and nice render of the ps3 slim.
- shininia, on 08/20/2009, -0/+10Unless you're playing on an HDTV, then the game will look like *****.
- jholden42, on 08/20/2009, -2/+12...Aaaaand another person misses the point entirely.
Sony built an incredibly expensive system. Nobody wanted to buy it because it was TOO expensive. In order to reduce the price, they had to first reduce the costs. One of the things that had to go was, ultimately, backwards compatibility.
So when it gets cheap enough that you can afford it, now you complain that it doesn't do everything anymore..
Affordable system, or fancy extra features.
Pick one.
YOU CAN'T HAVE BOTH. - rwiggum, on 08/20/2009, -0/+10That's not the point. I already HAVE a PS2, and I would much rather be able to play all of my old Playstation and Playstation 2 games, AND the new Playstation 3 games I get.
- jholden42, on 08/20/2009, -8/+17Yeah? Why didn't you buy one when they were selling them new, then?
Was it because they were too expensive?
Right, exactly. - tsuki, on 08/20/2009, -2/+11"...that most consumers that are purchasing the PS3 cite PS3 games as a primary [reason]“."
Well yeah, how would you be able to cite you bought a ps3 to play ps2 games if it wasn't BC in the first place? - chazuk, on 08/21/2009, -1/+10"and at the risk of being fanboyish, MS managed to get their console out at roughly the same time to the entire world and not cripple it"
At the cost of hardware failure at a previously unseen level in console gaming. - tnoy, on 08/20/2009, -5/+14My PS3 has backwards compatibility, and I've spent maybe an hour using it over the past year. If it didn't have BC, my PS2 wouldn't be cluttering up my TV area because it just wouldn't be there at all.
- Foxhound1979, on 08/20/2009, -6/+15I have a 60GB launch PS3 and I still own some PS2 and PS1 games however, I can't remember the last time I played a PS1 or 2 game on my PS3. I have the Secret of Monkey Island, Psychonauts, Okami for PS2 games and I have Disc World for a PS1 game. As soon as these become available on the PSN I will then get rid of then.
- Number23, on 08/20/2009, -3/+12BC will undoubtedly return in the form of full software emulation combined with downloadable PS2 games via the PSN store. Though given the distinct lack of alacrity in adding PS1 games to the PSN store, I can’t imagine it will happy anytime soon.
As to playing older games, I play PS1 games on my laptop all the time, I even have USB adaptor to use the dual shock controller. Colin McRae Rally 2.0 is still a great game. - Eezyville, on 08/20/2009, -0/+8I have a 60 gig that works great. I'll sell it to you for $300.
- arbulus, on 08/20/2009, -4/+12I bought my PS3 because it could play PS1 and 2 games and it's a Blue Ray player. I almost never play PS3 games on it. The whole time I've had it, I've played WAY more PS2 games. The only exception is Rock Band. I didn't buy it for the PS3 game titles, because frankly there are VERY few good ones. Rock Band and Orange Box are the only PS3 titles I've found worthwhile. And since Sony has stated that they intentionally make it difficult for people to develop for the PS3, we're going to continue to see a lack of good titles.
Normally, I'm not a champion of backward compatibility. In computing, or other various tech. But when it comes to games consoles and ***** I have to have plugged into my TV, then it's a problem. I have no space for, nor the desire to have, 10 different consoles plugged to my TV.
So to sum up: if it weren't for backward compatibility, I probably wouldn't have bought the PS3. And if I didn't already have a PS3, I wouldn't be buying one now. - kingmanic, on 08/20/2009, -0/+8The original 60gb had the full CPU/GPU from the PS2. The MGS4 bundled 80GB was the GPU only with the CPU emulated in software. The current 160GB and 80GB and the future slim have none of the chips. If they have software only EMU it hasn't rolled out yet.
- Bulletbillx, on 08/20/2009, -1/+9If emulation on the newer skus is possible they will do it eventually so they can sell ps2 games on the psn.
- mythicflux, on 08/20/2009, -1/+8@Foxhound1979 and Bulletbillx
Keep in mind that there are 3 types of available to the PS3, only two of them have been used. The 1st was found on launch versions (20GB, 60GB) that's full hardware emulation. The 2nd was found on the 80GB models, that was hardware assisted software emulation. (Sony kept the GPU and emulated the CPU).
The 3rd option is full software emulation. Something Sony has never done with the PS3. The good news is that software emulation can be added at any time. All Sony has to do is decide when. The even better news is that Sony filed a patent months ago to do this. So as both of you have stated they can enable BC on new the PS3 Slim (and older models) when ever they decide there is a reason to. - clippclop, on 08/20/2009, -6/+13Microsoft gave you "backward compatibility". Sony did too and nobody gave a rats ass about it (otherwise there would have been a huge boom in sales when they announced it would be removed). So they remove it, and all of a sudden everyone wants it back.
Can never make the people who have no intention of actually buying the console happy. They will just bitch and bitch until there is nothing to bitch about. Then they move else ware. - RobotBuddha, on 08/20/2009, -1/+8Eh, what platform doesn't have an atari 800 emulator?
- wheezy360, on 08/20/2009, -3/+10If people have such a back catalog of PS2 games they want to play and can't, what the ***** happened to their PS2?
- nmessick, on 08/20/2009, -4/+11you would think that since the cell is SO POWERFUL that they would have no trouble doing PS2 emulation in software...? The XBOX can do it!
- Loonacy, on 08/20/2009, -2/+9I specifically shopped for a PS3 with b/c and i've used it quite a bit. I gave a friend my PS2 when his broke, so i'm glad i can play my old games on my PS3.
- kingmanic, on 08/20/2009, -1/+8Thats wasn't pure software.
The launch units had pure hardware emu. The new SKU had a combo hardware software emu. - nmessick, on 08/20/2009, -3/+9you would think that since the cell is SO POWERFUL that they would have no trouble doing PS2 emulation in software...? The XBOX can do it!
- xboxing, on 08/20/2009, -0/+6The PS3 will get PS2 compatibility once they officially axe the PS2 off the market. Until then, they have no reason to go that route... I think by then we'll see PS2 games as downloads on PSN as well.
- TheyCMeTrollin, on 08/20/2009, -3/+9yo dawg i hurd you like playstations
- IAthenaI, on 08/21/2009, -1/+7Agreed. I know a handful of people that would have pre-ordered if the slim had BC (including myself). All of the other platforms do it, it can't be THAT hard. Whether or not everyone wants it there are obviously quite a few consumers that do... making this a poor business choice for Sony. Guess we'll just have to be patient.
- theblackgecko, on 08/21/2009, -1/+7The Xbox can emulate the PS2?
- Tbags, on 08/20/2009, -0/+6I think he's talking about the icon
- Zamfir, on 08/20/2009, -3/+9Shouldn't you be spamming digg with more Kotaku garbage?
- clippclop, on 08/20/2009, -6/+12"I own a Microsoft console for the first time this generation and I haven't picked up a single original Xbox game"
That probably has a lot do to with the fact that the 360's BC sucks balls ;) -
