- geeshock, on 12/21/2007, -2/+152What happened is that EA are too busy making ***** games to ruin this one as well.
- bossm4n, on 12/21/2007, -0/+92I loved that game. Stealing the chain and giving a beat down, especially to the cops was a blast. How much fun would that be on a Wii where you use the Wii-motes to control the weapons? Bring it on! Any platform!
- ShamsTron, on 12/21/2007, -0/+68I am not a hater. Man I loved that game. Combine Burnout's crashes with Flatout's rag doll physicis when the guy flings out of the car and you got yourself a game.
- chris4404, on 12/21/2007, -1/+68I do.
I enjoyed Road Rash and would like to see it brought back. - phrenzy, on 12/21/2007, -0/+58Wow - Crazy to see this on digg. I was just thinking about this game. I worked on several iterations of Road Rash at EA and honestly they just let the franchise die in favor of sports & movie licenses. At this time (shortly after their offices moved from San Mateo to the Redwood Shores buildings) EA began to go on their acquisition frenzy. This came at the expensive of basically all innovation that happened "in house" as original games were no longer considered 'worth the trouble' without a movie or sports license behind them.
The real tragedy is that there was a very cohesive team that had been producing the games from the beginning and they refined it with every iteration (this was also true of the team who produced the "Strike" games. Around the time of the PS2 debut, EA quickly dissolved those teams and others once they switched from being a game making company to essentially a 'financial institution'.
To be fair, their model has a place in the current industry; as a publisher. Innovation in development is now all done at smaller 'satellite' companies - the problem is that as soon as one of them has success EA, Activision or Sony buys them out and prevents them from doing anything other than sequels to the game that made them successful. This nearly always results in a company 'brain drain' and rotting the company from the inside out.
EA has a lot of original properties in their portfolio: Archon, Strike series, Road Rash and hell, even Skull Monkeys! If somebody at EA had the vision to resurrect these titles and figure out how to produce them on a slightly lower budget than the movie / sports licenses they could earn some good will back from the gaming community.
Oh well. - inactive, on 12/21/2007, -1/+47That game was juevinile, stupid, and promoted bad morals and lack of respect toward cops. I loved it so much. Xbox live Arcade anyone?
- aoru, on 12/21/2007, -4/+36Was this the first game where you could beat up cops? Eat ***** O'Leary!!
- NEWNHLISLAME, on 12/21/2007, -0/+31When I had a Genesis Road Rash was in the machine regularly, I remember having played until I had bought the most expensive bike. the Diablo only problem after that was the bike was to fast to control. the Best part of that game was veering a crowd of Bikers into on coming traffic! and looking in rear view to see the carnage. I guess the races were pretty long to so if you messed up you would have a long time to make up.. great game
- flippedcracker, on 12/21/2007, -0/+29i loved that game.
- BuddhistPirate, on 12/21/2007, -5/+32Carmageddon anyone?
- rezist, on 12/21/2007, -0/+23damn cows in the way! You'd hit one of those and roll for 10 sec.
- inactive, on 12/21/2007, -1/+21@PooChunk
Clearly, you've never had the enjoyment of swinging a piece of steel chain at a fellow racer while traveling at break neck speeds. Priceless. It was my favorite game on Sega Channel.
P.S. With a name like "PooChunk," I needn't remind you that despite your attempt at a meaningful comment, you sir are still a "piece of *****" by name. - emomakesmecry, on 12/21/2007, -1/+20Words cannot express how much i miss this game. The PC version was the best and Pacific Highway was my favorite track.
- dawnraid101, on 12/21/2007, -1/+18I loved road rash and still do nothing like beating chino on his crappy yellow bike
- diizy, on 12/21/2007, -0/+15I think that would make a sick game! Imagine playing Burnout with Motorcycles and sweet weapons! And ragdolls. damn
- cerealjynx, on 12/21/2007, -0/+14Road Rash 1-3 was just re-released on PSP in the form of a collection of old EA games.
- diggcensored, on 12/21/2007, -1/+15I still have the PC version of road rash
- santaliqueur, on 12/21/2007, -1/+13Carmageddon 2 was amazing. First one was great, and the third one sucked hard. But #2 was pure gaming bliss.
- Haon, on 12/21/2007, -0/+10*steals chain* YEAH!
- SweetChinMusic, on 12/21/2007, -0/+10Woah! I loved this! I still have it on my Sega Genesis.
- Asianwaste, on 12/21/2007, -2/+12They made a Road Rash for Saturn
- CannedMango, on 12/22/2007, -2/+12I'll tell you what was wong with Road Rash 64, which had the potential to be absolutely amazing...
The problem is ths:
"When you fell off the bike, it magically placed you back on the road!"
WTF is that????
Road Rash is about the joy of knocking someone out of the race... not inconveniencing them for about 3 seconds.
And when you got hit by a car and your bike went flying off into the distance, you had to do the run of shame to get it and THEN had to race like you gave a damn just to get back into 2nd last place. You had to friggin' EARN your way back into the pack, it wasn't just handed to you like some sort of losers race for pathetic whiners. Where's the joy in that? The physics and look of the game were far ahead of any other version of Road Rash. Crashes could result in your bike flipping in a myriad of different ways depending on the collision. It made crashing half the fun of the game... until you magicallly teleported and were pissed off again.
I hope they don't f**k it up this time. - Jonjonjonny, on 12/21/2007, -0/+9Jesus, that music is implanted on my brain. I always wondered what PE no. 1 was.
- addictist, on 12/22/2007, -1/+10Well then ***** EA.
- dawnraid101, on 12/21/2007, -3/+11i bet the crap out of o-shay many time.
- aelias, on 12/21/2007, -1/+9We used to go to the mall when we were little and play the genesis version to death. We kept having to start over since the demo machine kept resetting after 10 minutes or so.
The ultimate was the one for 3DO. The best SSFII was for 3DO too. Sam Sho was the business too. All the other games sucked, tho. - Haon, on 12/21/2007, -0/+8Ive been asking this question for the past few years. Road Rash 2 was the greatest.
- zerobackup, on 12/21/2007, -0/+7Not quite the same, but still a great game.
- tehjai, on 12/21/2007, -0/+7Sergio wasn't so tough once you had the chain!
- zerobackup, on 12/22/2007, -0/+7Public Enemy Number 1
- stigma15, on 12/22/2007, -0/+6No, I loved it too. The racing and sense of speed were amazing for the time. The only problem was that the combat was hard to execute at high speed and wasn't practical if you wanted to win a race.
They could make a badass new Road Rash with an open world, online multiplayer/co-op. Friends could fight over who drives and who gets to sit in the sidecar dropping oil-slicks, spike strips and generally beating the ***** out of everyone/thing - LordSkywalker, on 12/21/2007, -1/+7Loved those games. There are games I think about that I wish had sequels. This is one I continuously mention every 6 months or so. I can just imagine how cool a new one would be with physics, sandbox-style, great graphics, fun customizable bikes and weapons, and everything else.
- Haon, on 12/21/2007, -0/+5From what I can remember the cops were invincible in 1...2 is were you could beat he ***** out of them just like everyone else.
- camilos007, on 12/22/2007, -0/+5Its scary to read this story. Will the same outcome happen to games like Mass Effect? I remember being so proud to have Electronic Arts as one of the first 17 Sega Genesis licensees. Who would have thought that that company would become one of the most hated 'game' companies in the industry.
- inactive, on 12/22/2007, -0/+5Yeah but the music is all redone. I remember the one that had soundgarden in the soundtrack.
- stigma15, on 12/22/2007, -0/+5I dunno, the sport-bike/cruiser feud would make a great gameplay/story dynamic
- joltjake, on 12/21/2007, -0/+4I call for road rash source!
- bugsy187, on 12/22/2007, -0/+4That game was so much fun. I can't tell you how many times my race broke down into a slug fest with a cop or one of the bikers.
- Roblodocus, on 12/21/2007, -0/+4It depends whether they were laid down or not, the crouching cows moo'd and set you 30 feet in to the air.
- chiefbandit2200, on 12/22/2007, -0/+4So am i the only one who loved road rash 3d? I never really played the races, but i would spend a lot of time just driving around the map (which was really large, especially for its time). It was like a biker version of driver...
- kiwiboyus, on 12/21/2007, -0/+4This was the first console game I ever played, I rented a system for a day and we played until our thumbs dropped off. Great game!
- Hobofuzz, on 12/22/2007, -0/+4I remember playing the original Road Rash trilogy when I was only 5 or 6 years old.
Whenever I got bored, I'd crash my bike then run the rest of the race. - steveoco, on 12/21/2007, -0/+4I got it emulated the other month... it was classic coming back to give Belladonna a chain to the face, loved the baton too, and the classic little animations when you won a race of people usually getting messed up. And nitro Diabo equals airtime!
- stigma15, on 12/22/2007, -1/+5Hint to Game Producers: Ever heard of a game where you beat up/kill cops that wasn't a success?
- allisonaxe, on 12/22/2007, -0/+4yeah, but that's acclaim. almost everything they touched turned to pure *****.
- iancgi, on 12/22/2007, -0/+4its finally been said
- GeckoSlayer, on 12/22/2007, -0/+4Well I dunno about the PSP, but I have all 3 originals here :D
- Spamcan, on 12/22/2007, -0/+4The second Burnout became Road Rash with cars it became fun, thats why I've loved the series since Burnout 3: Takedown. It's time Road Rash returned in full form though, it's like the one franchise EA won't exploit.
- ScottoGato, on 12/22/2007, -1/+5Hell yeah. This was a great game! I remember always kicking my buddy's bike into some objects and have them totally wipeout. Great 2 player game.
- inactive, on 12/22/2007, -0/+3I loved this game. I know I'm going to get a lot of haters, but I loved playing this on the Sega Saturn.
The N64 version was kinda lame, even though it was 3D I preferred the older graphic. (ps1, Saturn) -
