- harreola, on 12/15/2007, -32/+115Valve should learn a thing or two from Epic...
- grat2001, on 12/15/2007, -3/+79Don't forget the main one EA.
- charlescheese, on 12/15/2007, -1/+43EA really needs to get their ***** together. For a company with so many resources, it's mind boggling that they can't get their various engines running on PS3 with efficiency.
- AwesomeMonster, on 12/15/2007, -1/+43Orange box for every other system got above a 9.0... Your gripes lie with EA.
- loganhid, on 12/15/2007, -4/+409.0 Presentation
Irritating menu setup. An incredible amount of customizaton and tweaking options for a console game.
9.5 Graphics
Beautifully put together. UT's silly sci-fi style shines with some of the best visuals around, and it performs well.
9.0 Sound
Sharp, clean effects make explosions, weapons, and vehicles feel all the more powerful.
9.0 Gameplay
Fast, distinct FPS action that's easy to pick up and greatly rewarding to those who stick with it. An expanded vehicle element makes things more entertaining.
9.0 Lasting Appeal
Six modes for online play offer plenty to keep you busy. Don't expect to be enthralled by the single-player campaign, but the bots put up a good fight.
9.0
OVERALL 9.0 - nreynolds, on 12/15/2007, -0/+35EA doesn't hire experienced programmers. They hire recent college graduates who usually leave after 3 years or so. They hardly ever hire a programmer from another company, because it's not cost-effective for them.
the truth is, EA is still making tons of money making ***** games, so they have no reason to hire better programmers/artists/anythings. - zoziw, on 12/15/2007, -5/+39No one will lose their job over that review.
- krische, on 12/15/2007, -1/+27So does this mean that the Unreal Engine that has been developed for the PS3 architecture will be available to other developers? I know the Unreal Engine is probably the most popular graphics engine, so maybe this could be a turn around for developers making the process easier for them on the PS3.
- dansmeek, on 12/15/2007, -31/+56IGN sure puts an interesting tone on things. Most PS3 games make an attempt to use the architecture. EA simply gets the game "to run" on the PS3. No EA games have used any of the SPU's (except possibly Burnout). Given then PPU is strong at 3.2 ghz, however it's not loaded with things like the TLBs and other various hardware that helps speed up the memory movement that you see on both the PC and the 360. Which is why processes on the PS3 *HAVE TO* take advantage of the SPU's. There are 6 of them (8 total), so you can have 7 processes running at the same time.
Of course Orange Box is gonna run like crap when they are essentially using PC code on the damn PS3 architecture.
Anyway all PS3 exclusives and I'd say a fair amount of multiplatform games (COD4, Assassins Creed somewhat, DiRT, etc) use it.
And furthermore the Orange Box framerate is almost identical to the 360, as are load times. The PS3 for some reason, just gets more crap when people notice problems. You expect it on the 360 i guess, so it's not a big deal, when it's on the PS3 it's a "wow, Sony has failed!"
And finally, IGN only has two employees that own a PS3. So basically everyone else is using the IGN ps3 whenever they play it, while they all have X360's at home. I think this is going to add to even more bias. - RiverBelow, on 12/15/2007, -5/+29For the record, Valve had absolutely *nothing* to do with the port of the orange box to the PS3. They just did 360 and PC, and those turned out great. EA Games on the other hand did Orange Box for PS3, and you can see the result...
Don't ever knock Valve... - inactive, on 12/15/2007, -2/+23Someone has to hire the graduates or the industry will get very old very quickly.
- ZenMojo, on 12/15/2007, -5/+26You mean Gears of War is a slow-paced, smaller Unreal Tournament II with a little more strategy.
- bdub92, on 12/15/2007, -0/+15yes.
- Vzylexy, on 12/15/2007, -3/+18UT has never been about the single player, it's a mutliplayer game with a single player mode.
- Kahlnen, on 12/15/2007, -1/+14I miss Invasion :(.
I hope someone comes out with a mod for it. - mikesuds, on 12/15/2007, -4/+17This is a ridiculous thing to say.
- Robbothehood, on 12/15/2007, -3/+15The Jews got their own country at the end of that one.
- Mejogid, on 12/15/2007, -2/+13@Bramtamp
And how will those experienced programmers get their experience? - JayD16, on 12/15/2007, -0/+10UT has single player?
- SaxxonPike, on 12/15/2007, -4/+13As much as I've avoided being any sort of advocate for the PS3, I think now is the time to buy either that or a PC just to play this game. It simply rocks. About all I can complain about is vehicle balancing. The new Necris vehicles blow everything out of the water.
- whorunbartertwn, on 12/15/2007, -0/+9There's a war? Why can't there be two good consoles that are both fun to play? Fanboyism is a fascinating thing to see.
- inactive, on 12/15/2007, -1/+10To be fair, Unreal on PS3 supports mouse/keyboard controls and user created mods.
Half Life on 360/PS3 does neither.
Valve could learn a thing or two from Epic - jfinke, on 12/15/2007, -3/+12This is funny because alot of UT PC gamers have given it the thumbs down. Compare the numbers of online players.
- int10h, on 12/15/2007, -2/+11Who knows, it didn't get 10/10
- GenoBaby, on 12/15/2007, -0/+9Not necessarily true... Team Fortress 2 on the 360 can get laggy at times.
- deadbaby, on 12/15/2007, -0/+9Valve decided to let EA port it so they deserve some of the blame. If they were going to do a half ass job on it they should have just skipped the PS3 entirely. It's bad business to let your IP get a bad reputation as being buggy & slow. Unfortunately Valve has made this mistake several times in the past with their console ports.
- Bega, on 12/15/2007, -2/+10speak for yourself bud, I ***** love the game.
- BlueSkyfish, on 12/15/2007, -3/+11Valve never made anything on the PS3. Valve doesn't even like the PS3. EA did the port of the Orange Box.
- dijital, on 12/15/2007, -0/+8Seriously... wtf? This game rocks on the PC. Are you playing on a Packard Bell over Dial-up?
- Po0py, on 12/15/2007, -0/+8You are, of course, refering to the fact that EA were responsible for the port of Orange Box over to the PS3. I thought I'd just point that out.
- slayernine, on 12/15/2007, -4/+11In defense of all the devolopers out there the PS3 is much harder to program for than say a PC or the Xbox 360.
- Jholder112233, on 12/15/2007, -1/+8Sure will.
- chedabob, on 12/15/2007, -2/+9There's retarded fanboys, and then there's you. There are no words to describe how retarded you are.
- deweather, on 12/15/2007, -8/+15actually it's very much the truth. If you are basing your opinion on the videos (namely the IGN one) it's not accurate. During the comparison with the boat , the user is quick saving over and over. That makes the frame catch each time. When the saving is completed and the game continues, the framerate suddenly is the same with the 360.
- XeroKool, on 12/16/2007, -0/+7@NakedBacon
I was thinking the exact same thing. - alexkorova, on 12/15/2007, -2/+9The PS3 is known to be the hardest of the current 3 consoles to program for.
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -0/+6More often than on Wii
- SemiSarcastic, on 12/15/2007, -0/+6Kick. Ass.
- DarkPrince11, on 12/15/2007, -2/+8Since when is Halo legendary? :-/
- Bootes, on 12/15/2007, -0/+5I'm very dissapointed in UT3 and love TF2, but really if you want to look at customer service and actual interaction with their customer base Epic is a million times better than Valve.
Epic constantly reads and replies on their forums along with adding many useful and free things to their games long after they were released. You're lucky if Valve even replies to their support form within a week. - deadbaby, on 12/15/2007, -0/+5There's a lot of strategy in CTF. I don't know much about warfare but it sounds like strategy plays a big role there too.
- inactive, on 12/15/2007, -1/+6No thanks, played it 2 years ago on the PC when it was fresh and looked good. Today's PS3 games put it to shame from a visual standpoint.
- inactive, on 12/15/2007, -2/+7That makes 4 now.
- inactive, on 12/15/2007, -0/+5Or because its a landmark game, just like Halo 3 and COD4 got their 'review' articles dugg. Moron.
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -1/+6Forge is nothing compared to what Unreal lets you do with mods
- TrancePhreak, on 12/15/2007, -0/+5Currently it is one person per PS3. They said they might try to have split screen in a patch later.
- Spytap, on 12/15/2007, -1/+6yeah but UT3 allows K&M
- MakinBacon, on 12/15/2007, -2/+7Who the hell is "Bramtamp"? I see "Brantano".
Either:
1. I'm taking crazy pills,
2. I'm not getting some obscure saying or new internet meme, or
3. You guys need new monitors. - strictnein, on 12/15/2007, -0/+5Yeah, the UT3 campaign is pretty lame, although it's not too bad as a training tool for people unfamiliar with the unique gameplay types that UT offers.
The thing is, there's cut scenes and voice acting throughout the whole thing. I just wonder how much money was wasted on trying to actually make it a viable option. - jacksons98, on 12/16/2007, -0/+5And that's fine because I won't be buying the game. I don't owe them my $59 dollars either.
