- NuclearBlast, on 10/10/2007, -3/+49The console fanboy battles need to stop. Look around a bit: we have got three really ***** awesome consoles on the shelves right now! One can do blu-ray, one can do hd-dvd, and one has a ***** swinging controller! Why can't we stop and appreciate how awesome each of these consoles are individually rather than comparing them endlessly?
- Jumboto, on 10/10/2007, -5/+41I don't really know much about programming for consoles but I think it comes down to talent and good dev tools.
- maley, on 10/10/2007, -5/+39Thank you for a smart assessment of the PS3. Sorry EA that not every developer is as lazy as you.
- CReyes4182, on 10/10/2007, -6/+34what demo did you play? They look almost Identical, except the character models are more detailed on the ps3 version. Not only that but the controls where much better.
- chazuk, on 10/10/2007, -4/+30I'd love to play it on my 360.... IF IT WASN'T BEING ***** REPAIRED! (It is really broken btw)
- CSharpSauce, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25First I'll admit that I've never written any code for the PS3, but have touched code for the PS2, a PSP, and the first Xbox, when i worked for a game studio (which I'll leave blank for now) So with that out if anyone more knowledgeable disagrees with something i say below feel free to give me the full technical reason behind it so i can be more informed as I'm really only judging by the technical material I've read, and no actual experience on this platform.
Developing for the PS3 isn't any harder or easier. Its Different, game programming has traditionally been extremely procedural. You create a game loop, accomplish your game logic, take care of some rendering then if you're ahead of the game wait a few milliseconds so you stay in sync. Most things do require this procedural way of thought. However the PS3's real advantage (from my understanding) is it has an increased amount resources for an increased amount of computing threads at your fingertips. The possibilities for features are increased with multi threading (which is not new to gaming by the way, its been in place for a while, and I've used it extensively) I was going to list some examples here, but i don't time so I'll just add a good link below, and wait for the fan boys, and 14 year old "programming experts" to bury my post :)
For more reference take a look at this link: http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20060713/turley_01.shtml - theaceoffire, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22Ok, Your thread was created an hour after this one...
Why not just link to the content you duplicated? http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=27782 - Zenobia, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21Heh, you seem to be new to the internet.
- chazuk, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19Or, we can just bury yours!
- HAKdragon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15While I haven't heard the actual quote from Ubisoft Montreal, I'd imagine anytime you're developing a title for multiple systems development would be slower compared to developing for a single platform.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Ubisoft Montreal (team that claims poor PS3 AI) vs Ubisoft Paris, battle of the Frenchies.
- RyanBlueThunder, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Dreamcast
- philhatesyou, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11"There hasn't been a PS3 price drop"
Hmm, something that used to cost $599 can now be had for $499. Did the price go down? Yes! Sounds like a price drop to me. - BattleScars, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10PS3 gamers who are GRAW fans.................................duh
- Rupan, on 10/10/2007, -6/+16lol I love that people blame devlopers inadequacies on the consoles now. "The PS3 cant do good AI" wtf? Thats like saying Linux cant run Word Processing because the Microsoft Word executable wont load. You just got to *GASP* learn a new system. Heaven forbid publishers who make bookoos of dollars have to sit on their hands a little longer for their next mutli-million dollar influx so that their development teams can learn a brand new CPU structure.
I mean, of course the 360 is easier to work with. Its pretty much a mutli-core PowerMAC. And since the hardware is pretty run of the mill its easy to have good tools ready to go. - volacide, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Hmm, pretty sure I don't remember there being those windmills in the 360 version casting those sweet volumetric lighting effects.
- brakezone, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10reading comments on digg is a waste of time :D
- chazuk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9What the ***** are you on about?
- profingersk8er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8the PS3 and X360 have different shade of brightness in video output, that doesn't mean PS3s is more "washed out", because your TV takes care of that.
- gwolf, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Mostly because fan boys would rather be right than happy.
- jdaniel284, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Ok, what are the algorithms then? I program AI for a living, so let us discuss.
- Zoids, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9EA are *****. That's why.
- chazuk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8http://www.360voice.com/blog.asp?tag=ChazClout
How is that? I havent been on my 360 for days. Add ChazClout to your psn friends and I'm on now.
And here is my ***** 360. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlhU098ilb8 - joeleslie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Boofster needs to learn about irregular verbs first. "Learnt" is British English while "Learned" is American English.
That is all. - samdu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7More familiar does not mean inherently "easier." Just different.
- Avalontor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I believe B1663r got owned. Care to make a comment now B1663r? Please do, or maybe just stfu next time, wanker.
- jellygraph, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7where have i heard this before? oh yeah, the ps2...
same old story...
in the end, they say that, but end up using middleware - jdaniel284, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7"Early" in the lifecycle of the PS3 but "late" in the lifecycle of the 360. Interesting.
- explodey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Correction: One does HD-DVD for and extra $180. And, it's for movies only.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+6yeah and correction no 2: the first one does blue-ray which eats hd-dvd for breakfast and also that the games are burnt onto blueray disks too
- X18999, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7who cares what you believe of even if what he says is true?
- jdaniel284, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Now I shall make an analogy. You know how babies feel after eating lead paint chips? That's how a feel after reading your stupid post.
- jellygraph, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6hey, wake up... where have you been the last 7 years?
First of all, yes the PS2 had the Dreamcast:
The Dreamcast was launched September 9, 1999
The PS2 was launched October 26, 2000
The XBOX was launched November 15, 2001
The Gamecube was launched November 18, 2001
Secondly, this was a major criticism against Sony, as their choice of using RISC based processors and the "emotion engine". The PS2 was a highly parallel architecture, making it very difficult to develop for compared to the other consoles and therefore there was a huge amount of speculation in the media about defections.
Hence middleware - samdu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5ADJUST YOUR TV!!! Sheesh.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+4if he bought a 360 he still would have been alone with his wii you stupid ***** *****. it's because he would have had to send it in for repairs due to rrod ***** anyways.
next time you wanna make a comment, just think and dont - Promantarius, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4How does one claim poor AI when they're the ones coding it? I must've missed that discussion somehow :o
- DarkJC, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Give me a break, they're all just subsets of joystiq. www.xbox360fanboy.com is reported on digg all the time too you retard.
- BattleScars, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6You got a 60GB PS3 for $360 and you are complaining! Dude your freakin' 360 actually costs more if you factor in XBL. Besides, Sony settled the stupid Immersion lawsuit so my bets are on a SIXAXIS 2 come crimbo, essentially ruining your single argument against the PS3. And as for your controller gripes, seriously, what are you on? There is nothing wrong with the PS3 controller. In case you hadn't noticed, you can actually wrap your hands all the way around it (no clunky battery pack) and the sticks are actually next to your thumbs (MS designers obviously have one thumb longer than the other). The d-pad is also far superior, it uses actual buttons rather than a floating plastic disc. All of these aspects clearly required planning and a certain degree of accuracy. Compare that to Microsoft's motto of "if in doubt, copy Sony then make it bigger and swap some ***** around"
- jdaniel284, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4"[T]hey simulated a mouses brain" is not an algorithm. You said you could "think of AI algorithms off the top of [your] head that 10,000 PS3's would be too slow for". What are the actual algorithms and what are the bottlenecks?
You really have no idea do you? Oh well, I'll let you off the hook. Go play your 360. - jdaniel284, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Genetic algorithms are used to solve certain np-complete problems that *could not* be solved realistically on a computer. using a brute force problem-space search I am not sure what you mean by "assembly language" problem solvers though. Is that to make it sound harder? Anyway, 10,000 PS3s would be more than adequate to handle most genetic algorithms. The interconnect may be a problem depending on what you are trying to do, however.
The fact of the matter is this. If you were knowledgable, you could describe an algorithm that "10,000" PS3s would have trouble with. I doubt they would be "too slow", however. More than likely, you would need a 64-bit architecture to get the result you are wanting, and this has nothing to do with speed. - BattleScars, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Oh come on, I could have come up with better techno babble than that! Next time, put your back into it. Really try and convince people by using cool words like 'buffer" and "pixel matrix". Better yet, post on a forum or blog under a different name then create a link to that page and use it as your "source" works every time!
But seriously, you don't have a clue what you are talking about, for instance: "The SPE's cannot effectively do AI". Huh? Are we just meant to take your word for it or what? ***** you and your ***** facts. - staticneuron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Ok, Mr '4 years of computer science who knows everything about cell' With your long winded post you have proven effectively that you know nothing about the cell. what can be passed to the "SPU's" (plural) are branch hint instructions which are in no way slower.
http://www.cellperformance.com/articles/2006/04/background_on_branching.html
Fanboys are full of it. - Gornall, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Developers are just afraid of spending a little extra time to learn a system.
Pure profit minded, time costs money. Much easier and cheaper to build on one system and port to another.
Just a shame the xbox360 came first meaning devs more familiar with its tools. - chazuk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Remember Avalontor....
http://chaz.speakyourbrains.net/Pictures/360.jpg ;) - bilbravo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3So why does the PS3 have to be put to this test, but not the 360?
- ChildeRoland420, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Just proves how much more future proof the PS is.
- samdu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3They're all legitimate sites. Just unfortunately named.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3gaming AI has nothing to do with artificial neural nets. do you think all the enemies in video games actually have simulated neural networks allowing them to think and behave like sentient beings? video game AI simply consists of preprogrammed behavior to give the illusion of intelligence--they don't actually possess any cognitive abilities.
- RavenndudE, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4*****, I read that as GWAR and got all excited. GWAR needs to be on Digg .... some how...
