- theaceoffire, on 02/25/2008, -7/+77Tell someone that they can't use HD-DVD's in their DVD player.
Far too many will ask "Why". - theaceoffire, on 02/25/2008, -22/+79HD-DVD killed HD-DVD.
Name confusion combined with being outsold monthly, coupled with having only one manufacturer for the hardware.
This new move will allow Toshiba to not only get back into the HD market, but the cell market as well... its a wise move in my mind. - mywhitenoise, on 02/25/2008, -5/+54That is the dumbest argument in the world. You know how many HD DVD titles were taken back because consumers (most are pretty ***** stupid) had no idea you had to buy a separate player for them? So much to the point that my local Best Buy put up a sign that said "YOU MUST HAVE AN HD DVD PLAYER IN ORDER TO PLAY THESE MOVIES".
When a customer looks at a blu-ray movie they wonder what blu-ray is, they don't buy it and expect it to play in their DVD player.
*****...speaking of which, DVD should have been called DVHS, probably would have made more sales. - shinythingy, on 02/25/2008, -6/+45well it didn't work
- amrush4th, on 02/25/2008, -1/+34Toshiba was part of the cell way before HD-DVD Died.
- WhereAmI, on 02/25/2008, -7/+39You were somehow to find the exact same article as Four20's
http://digg.com/playstation/After_HD_DVD_Drop_Tosh ...
And submit it. - Texmurphy01, on 02/25/2008, -10/+40Hey America. Stop using the term 'flip flop' for everything. Seriously.
- nightmare1228, on 02/25/2008, -0/+24Ok, it's dead, we know! We don't need an article about it dying everyday.
- JoeB4ever, on 02/25/2008, -5/+26Still waiting for the "downloading is the way to get movies" comment.
- frontporsche, on 02/25/2008, -2/+23Just last week a friend said she thought that meant Hard Disk - DVD recorder.
- Responder656, on 02/25/2008, -1/+20Quoted from ibeetle in the comments of the other submission that WhereAmI mentioned:
"The article is inaccurate. Do a google search and you will find that several other sources site that the deal has been in the works for almost a year. That it was only the price that was finally agreed on this recently. It is also inaccurate in that it says Toshiba is backing the PS3. Yes the chips are used in the game console, but the chips are also used in several other products Toshiba makes are is planing on making over the next couple of years. It's timing is ironic, but there is no nefarious conspiracy here." - nsanidy, on 02/25/2008, -0/+19Where the hell do I get a PS34?
- paradigm1220, on 02/25/2008, -1/+20That's probably the dumbest thing I've read today. If Toshiba knew that Blu-ray would win, then why the hell would they invest everything behind their HD-DVD technology?
- PDAIsAOk, on 02/25/2008, -1/+19Buried as duplicate. Come on Zaibatsu I thought you were one of the power digg whores. I know you know how to use the search when it comes to dupes, especially if the dupe is verbatim.....
- cave, on 02/25/2008, -0/+16Physical media is for old people... in Korea.
- Brad324, on 02/25/2008, -6/+22Stop flip-flopping on the issue of whether or not we should use the term 'flip-flop'
- kinseyincanada, on 02/25/2008, -37/+52name confusion? if anything HD-DVD had a better name then Bluray. If you go to an average customer and ask him what is an HD-DVD they will easily say an High Def DVD, now go ask hom what the hell is a Bluray and see what you get?
- coppyrightmind, on 02/25/2008, -0/+15Slap on a sensationalized title and BAM!!! Front page.
- WhereAmI, on 02/25/2008, -0/+14Or "Holodisks are just a few years away"
- aegis9975, on 02/25/2008, -0/+11FUD rumor spread by Slashdot and picked up by DailyTech.
The whole Toshiba-Cell deal goes back to September of 2007 and confirmation of $827 million changing hands between Toshiba and Sony in October of 2007. You might recall that that is also the most heated and hostile times during the format war, Toshiba dropping prices and having Walmart super sales as well as the Paramount/Dreamworks deal for HD-DVD.

It has NOTHING to do with HD-DVD and Blu-ray. Toshiba was also the main people behind the EmotionEngine for the PS2. Sorry but companies are not one-dimension entities, they are complex enterprises with multiple agendas. - smacksaw, on 02/25/2008, -1/+11Fine. They sandaled on which format to embrace.
Better now? - Ganja420, on 02/25/2008, -0/+10This has been known for quite some time.
- Mejogid, on 02/25/2008, -2/+12I agree with you, but even an attempt at claiming the loss was due to this deal is wrong on so many levels. From the slashdot article on the same topic:
"This move is part of setting up a new joint venture between Toshiba and Sony that will be in effect next fiscal year (from 1. april 2008). They allready operate a similar joint venture today, where Toshiba owns 51% and Sony 49%. But since the current joint venture deal expires this fiscal year (31. march 2008), its just a continuation.
So this has nothing to do with the lost HD DVD battle. It was actually announced back in october of last year :
http://www.eetimes.com/rss/showArticle.jhtml?artic ... [eetimes.com]" - vpshockwave, on 02/25/2008, -2/+12For the lulz
- Varz, on 02/25/2008, -1/+10It has nothing to do with supporting the PS3. Toshiba will use the Cell in its own products and they were one of the developers behind it in the first place. It's sensationalized BS, DailyTech must be internet's equivalent of Fox News.
- triplehelix, on 02/25/2008, -0/+9toshiba has an incredible tv concept using the cell.
- mntbikeracer1, on 02/25/2008, -2/+10Same with Blu-Ray though I have been asked multiple times if I carry the Blue discs cause they fit more stuff on them. People will be confused regardless of name.
- kessel, on 02/25/2008, -6/+14HD-DVD has way too many ***** syllables to be an effective brand name.
- inactive, on 02/25/2008, -0/+8That is how Zaibatsu stays off welfare! Hew made a terrible career choice and works at a job that relies on Digg to make money. So he cannot be bohtered by things like the Digg's TOS, or ethics. He must copy others submissions and use his circle jerk to get it to the front page first. Otherwise, it is a week of Ramen Noodles.
It is sad to think what will happen after the inevitable Bubble Burst 2.0. People like Zaibatsu have destroyed their resume to work in a job that has no long term future. - tnoy, on 02/25/2008, -0/+8Its more applicable to use a statement like that when you know more than two poeple.
- drjekelmrhyde, on 02/25/2008, -0/+8Old news is Good news This Deal was in the making back in OCT07'
- inactive, on 02/25/2008, -7/+14Yay for $35 MSRP movies!!!!
- drouk1556, on 02/25/2008, -1/+7No, I don't think you're correct. The IBM BladeCenter QS21 is the only server model that utilizes the Cell/BE processor, and I'm willing to bet that Toshiba has more ambitious plans for Cell/BE in its own products.
- EatingPie, on 02/25/2008, -4/+9Inaccurate.
The deal was in the works last year. Engadget themselves joked about... er... reported on it.
-Pie - cyrix, on 02/25/2008, -1/+6Only the DVD side of those dual sided discs can be used in a DVD player. The actual HD-DVD side, cannot.
- peestandingup, on 02/25/2008, -0/+5Yup. He knocked it up a notch!
- Malarie, on 02/25/2008, -0/+5I personally think that MS will come out with a BluRay player for the 360 pretty soon. The fact that Blu has won will probably make the PS3 selling a lot lot more. MS surelly dont want that.
Any opinions on the subject? - requiem3, on 02/25/2008, -2/+7Its not dead till Digg stops bringing news of it to front page.
- schnikies79, on 02/25/2008, -0/+5Not everyone watches movies/tv on their PC. My computer is in the off, my tv in the den. Couch > office chair.
I'm not building another pc to put in the den, nor am I building one with a $200+ drive in it. - inactive, on 02/25/2008, -4/+9And $400 is the min price on a blu-ray player for some time to come...
- grat2001, on 02/25/2008, -2/+7So from what I read, MS gets screwed and still has to pay Toshiba for HD DVD and to make Zune's. If Toshiba can find some way to integrate the Cell processor into it's products, then it will make that $835 mil seem cheap for what will be a very fruitful relationship. This is just a win all around for Sony and the backers of Blu-ray.
- zetsurin, on 02/25/2008, -1/+6More sour grapes by the crybaby losers who bought HD DVD. Not only is this likely innacurate but WHO CARES? You wasted your money by buying a dead format so get over it.
- shit, on 02/25/2008, -1/+6My friend's mom thought the same thing in the switch from NES to SNES.
"Why can't you just buy the new games?" - Topher06, on 02/25/2008, -4/+8MS only screws themselves.
- MrFisty, on 02/25/2008, -0/+4It's better than saying Toshiba croced HDDVD. Less unsightly also.
- nanoware, on 02/25/2008, -0/+4exactly, its been know that toshiba and sony worked together on the CELL, DUHHHHH!!!! companies like Sony and Toshiba do have to keep good relations one way or the other.
- redneckblues, on 02/25/2008, -0/+4Here's the awesome part: It would be an add-on, so nobody has to buy it if they don't want it. Licencing prices can be built into the drive without hurting the main SKU's.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+4No, D-VHS is an actual digital tape format that can hold movies and data, to the likes of 25-50GB. Educate yourself at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVHS .
- superkendall, on 02/25/2008, -0/+4Toshiba was always in the Cell market, they co-designed the chip!!
- FearAndLoathing, on 02/25/2008, -1/+4Betamax, the revenge!
