- truspector, on 10/11/2007, -9/+33Please, tell us where to begin. I just followed the authors instructions and as soon as the server thought I was him his comment magically appeared. I went to a different machine without signing in as him and the comment is not there. The blog is censored but it is tricking users into thinking that is not. That's pretty f*****g shady.
- Kyou, on 10/11/2007, -9/+33How have people not realised this is exactly like the "All I want for christmas is a PSP" thing?
http://rampindustry.com/
That's the website from Ramp Industry, the UK Ad Firm hired by Sony that runs ThreeSpeech - gadgeteer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+23The threespeech website is implemented using word-press, word-press has a standard feature that an unapproved/spam comment still appears to the original poster. It's very possible that the marketing firm running that website isn't even aware of what's going on. Never attribute to malice what one can excuse as ignorance.
- moodycj, on 10/11/2007, -5/+22Thats so funny. They just pretend that they are not deleting your posts. This is smart, if rude.
- Otto, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16Basically, they're not deleting comments, they're just making them not appear to everybody else. You see your own comments, but if they marked it, nobody else will. Which strikes me as incredibly clever.
Actually, this is a semi-standard feature of some blog packages. On some systems, where moderation is a required step, you will be able to see your comments but nobody else will until they are "approved". So what is most likely going on is that they are marking comments as "unapproved" instead of actually deleting them.
This may or may not be intentional on their part, but it's still quite shady. - razorsharp, on 10/11/2007, -12/+23Censorship is when you're prevented from saying something, moderation is when the speech at a particular place is being regulated. Not the same thing. Grow up. When you Digg people down you moderate this site, but you're not censoring anyone. You're only being censored if you have your own website hosted on your own servers and the government comes in a removes your content or threatens you with legal action. In fact, disallowing ThreeSpeech from moderating their own site would be censoring them. Why is anyone alarmed by this and why do you act like Nintendo and Microsoft wouldn't do the exact same thing? Hell, I'm sure they do on the forums on their websites.
- jeffiek, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13I just tried it. Your comment IS there.
- carpespasm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10they're only semi-official in the sense that it's not someone who's paycheck is signed by "sony inc". rather it's signed by a marketing company who gets their paycheck signed by "sony inc". they're still ***** shills
- omygroin, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12 do we need to post a story everytime someone gets moderated on the forums? it happens every ***** day, deal with it. It's their site so they can do whatever the hell they want with it. If you don't like it then leave, it's not like you're paying their bills or anything.
- Sniper, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Whats the big deal, it's not like their ps3news.com banning people and posting their IPs for linking to other webpages.
- formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9
Shut it, dickwad. Major Nelson is a Douche Bag and Shill for Microsoft. The shill even tried to justify Micro-transactions. You got to be pretty deep in the rabbit hole to even attempt that. - smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8you mean voluntarily sanitize your comments to the liking of Sony? who gets to decide what's offensive or not? personally, i didn't see anything on there that was remotely rude or offensive--except for the site's surreptitious censorship policy. people were just stating their opinion on Sony using subterfuge in their marketing and being dishonest about their use of censorship on the threespeech site.
and the site shows no indication of which comments are hidden from other users, so how are you supposed to know that your comments require re-writing? aren't you trying just a little too hard to justify their shady methods. it's clearly meant to censor negative comments made against Sony, plain and simple. worst yet, it does so in a deceptive manner so that users are tricked into thinking that they don't apply censorship--which would otherwise reveal their "threespeech" marketing/pr campaign as the hoax that it is.
but you sony fanboys go ahead and keep thinking what you want and continue showing blind devotion to the Sony corporate brand. i'm sure _that_ will convince them to start respecting the intelligence of their customers instead of trying to screw them over constantly. - Whackly, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Was the title and description in English? The words seem familiar but when you put them all together they dont really make sense. It's as if words are missing. "It's almost someone to include all the neccessary."
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11No, we have all realised it's an official thing from Sony but this story is just to prove that they do censor.
- Tech_Paradox, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Did you read the article? The problem isn't so much with the blog shilling for Sony, it's with the blog being shady about its censorship. If they're going to delete anti-Sony posts then they should be up-front about it. Instead, they're yanking the comments and then not letting you know your comment has been deleted by serving you up a page that still has your comment on it. That's pretty damn low, if you ask me...

That is ridiculous. - formulathree, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10
Speaking of Free Speech. Why is it that whenever I call Major Nelson a ***** Douche Bag in his blog my messages never appear in public? Is that ***** Douche Bag / Microsoft shill censoring me? - Akaji, on 10/11/2007, -8/+13Wow, first alliwantforchristmasisapsp, and now this. When the f%*@ will Sony give up?
- jedikv, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6yet digg users are too blind and busy sucking steve job's ***** to care
- linkinpark342, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I'm going to have to agree with jeffiek here. I see your comment in the blog thread
- Iced_Eagle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You're right that the comment may just not be approved by the moderator's... But who ever says it will be? :-)
- alx242, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Perhaps the article author should read this:
http://threespeech.com/blog/?p=452 - zetsurin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6So the original posting retard is complaining that threespeech are DIGGING YOU DOWN. You hypocritical moron! And why the ***** do people feel compelled to post negative PS3 trashtalk on there. Aren't all your millions of hate posts across all the Web 2.0 social websites enough for you? Are you kidding me? Is this what you spend all your time doing??
- CReyes4182, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5How is this violating anyone's freedom of speech? This is moderation in a controlled space. For example if you go to church can you just start screaming "BALLS SH*T F*CK"... no its a church. And if they kick you out their not taking away your freedom of speech. Its their church. Same goes for this site. Besides they posted a reply explaining themselves(like they had to). At least they didn't just go and delete the whole thread and pretend like nothing happened like that other company.
- AnotherBrian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The issue is that they are not being honest about their moderation policy and and actively hiding what they are doing.
- KosherInfidel, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8Ahem: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/06/27
- zetsurin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Exactly, and you got yourself dugg :) Ironic isn't it? People on here will consider sending someone's pro-PS3 posts into burried levels on Digg is all fair and above board in the one eyed views of the idiot who submitted this rubbish. The stupidity of the Web 2.0 automaton masses never ceases to amaze.
- MonkCanatella, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Dude, that's crazy! Someone left a comment after comment 106? Ridiculous.
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8You're joking right?
- apoc06, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3the threespeech podcast last week directly referenced a competitor. that reference resulted in this: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/06/27
they have a reason for taking that stance. here you can see the result. its their blog and their rules. you have plenty of other sites across the internet to post any form of discussion you wish. digg being one example. - fallenone05, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I think Major Nelson is behind this digg submission...
- jellygraph, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5at first i was outraged, but you may well be right...
saying that, i've known other websites that have used similar tactics... ie. moorewatch.com and many other conservative blogs (the ones that don't block comments or require some crazy pledge of allegiance registration process) - smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4that sounds plausible, but if they _are_ using actively using a censorship policy while trying to imply that their site promote free speech, then it should not be tolerated. either way, they need to address the issue and let the users know what's really going on.
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Shills to hurl hypocritical and lame insults against people like 'Major Nelson.'
- staticneuron, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Take a second look at the skeptobot blog. It has an update on why you might see the comments now
- staticneuron, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3http://threespeech.com/blog/?p=452#comments
This employs the same moderation tool quite a few sites have. Which means that until an admin approves of your comment it will not be displayed to the rest of the users. - championchap, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Im seeing the comment both in the pic and on the site without logging in too.
Bollocks, replied to the wrong comment. This was @ Renton. - SWP76, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I've written articles for ThreeSpeech in the past, and they made it quite clear that even if pertinent to the feature, they didn't want any competitors referenced in any way. I didn't write anything else for them after that.
- masterthiefster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2READ THE ARTICLE. It's an "officially unofficial" Sony blog used for viral marketing.
- staticneuron, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Honest, after being on the internet as long as I have I have seen so many trolls and flamers on all fan sites from Xbox to wii to PS3. What makes you feel that you need to spout your negative crap on a pro sony site? I mean...... is it wrong if I go on an xbox site and offer nothing other than my point of view.... which is microsoft is evil and the 360 will end the free world ( I don't really think this it is just an example) that the admins of that site cannot ban me or remove my comments?
What this is..... is an attack on threespeach because anti-sony zealots feel that the need to spread their opinions on their site. I don't understand how so many people can feel they are justified or have a "right" t o challenge moderation. Your free speech is not silenced it is just not welcom there. there are other sites (such as digg or Ihatesony.com or whatever) in which you can talk all the points you feel is heavy on your cheast and mind. - CReyes4182, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@RoboPimp3000
Are you out of your mind?! Do you know how many good PS3 stories got buried because of 360 fanboys? They didn't care that the stories where good they just blindly buried. There may be allot of negative stories on digg right now but not nearly as many good stories. Hell theres probably more bad stories on MS then there are good and bad stories on Sony put together. - leetdood, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You're a ***** moron.
- Rethcir, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2What the hell is threespeech?
- RoboPimp3000, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4If anything Digg is biased AGAINST Microsoft.
- theseaweedking, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Disregard this extraneous comment.
- theseaweedking, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's there for me, as well.
By the way, nice fake name generator there, "Franklin G. Williams." - jedikv, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1great analogy - too bad you will get dugg down by the moody digg user base
- frygar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1BOOO HOOOO HOOOOO, cry me a ***** river. On THREESPEECH, you're posting on THEIR site which means you have to follow THEIR rules. Don't like it? Then start your own blog.
- brianb722, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Forum moderation IS NOT censorship, for big sites it's a necessary evil to prevent trolls and more importantly spam from showing up on the site. I have a WordPress blog that probably doesn't get 1/10th of the traffic ThreeSpeech does and I get hundreds of spam comments a day and several vile posts from people that no human should read. Moderation does not mean comments get removed based on content, it means they have to be approved before they appear on the site.
- brianb722, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's amazing how many Digg users don't understand the Internet. MANY blogs moderate comments, some systems have moderation on by default, and when comments are moderated only the original commenter can see them. Duh.
