- venom1998, on 06/05/2008, -36/+355All true, playstation 3 is getting better and better.
- modestpenguin, on 06/05/2008, -56/+256Really great re-review. Ars has me convinced that my 360 is losing ground.
- Barnolde, on 06/05/2008, -25/+174PS2 wasn't worth owning either until a year after launch. The MGS4 bundle needs to be owned by everyone who doesn't have a PS3 yet. The versatility of the system is one of its greatest strong points, and it's absolutely essential for any media fan/home theater nut.
- soundsofreason, on 06/05/2008, -20/+125I was totally one of the skeptics in the beginning, but my god Sony have proved themselves more than worthy in the last year. Most of their choices seemed insane a year and a half ago, but now it panned out in their favor. Plus, the future looks very bright for the PS3. Everyone keeps saying "2008 is the year of the PS3", but I wouldn't be surprised if the same was said of 2009 and 2010.
I'm getting my PS3/MGS4 bundle one week from today!!! I can't wait!!! - diggB, on 06/05/2008, -10/+102Compared to my 360, the PS3 is a way, way, WAY quieter. Perfect for watching movies and not having it sound as if someone in the next room is vacuuming.
- fusuke31, on 06/05/2008, -15/+92They didn't mention the fact that the PS3 supports Linux.
- mywhitenoise, on 06/05/2008, -9/+78It's $150 more than a Wii, yet everyone thinks Wii is a bargain.
- MadxHatTeR, on 06/05/2008, -19/+86great article! I wish they would have mentioned that you can play games wirelessly on the psp from the ps3 and that you can instal linux on there for us geeks. I now play all the older Nintendo games with my ps3 controller.
- readme, on 06/05/2008, -16/+65I use my PS3 more than my 360. A lot of people poked fun at me for it but I just ignored them because to myself I was really happy with it. The 360 has a lot of great games but for some reason I just liked what was on the PS3 more. It seems at this point the only people maligning the PS3 are hardcore 360 fanboys and that will probably never end. The PS3 has come a long way. They really deserved the grief the press and gamers gave them at launch. $600, no games, etc... all true. But wow, talk about a turn-around. Competition forced them not to sit on their laurels. Well played Sony.
- albatross5000, on 06/05/2008, -16/+65Like 95% of Digg people slammed the PS3 a couple years ago and praised the Wii. It was pretty much across the board PS3 slamming -- based solely on the early wii buy boom I guess? I knew this would happen and bought a PS3 despite the angry retard mob. : D
Call Of Duty 4 is the sickest looking game I've ever played. It's absolutely epic, single player AND multi-player. I've never ever had a single-player experience like that in my life. This includes HL2, Quake III, and really any other game. I can't explain why GTA4 gets better reviews than COD4.
Assassin's creed is fun but slightly repetitive (like GTA4). Oh, and there's a downloadable tower-defense game which is hard but awesome. It has a few twists on the TD genre and the twists work. It's called PixelJunk Monsters ($10) -- looks cartoonish but don't let that fool you. - ericrous, on 06/05/2008, -8/+52My problem with the review is that they promise to review the PS3 "as it's available today" and yet they tout Home as a great feature. Not only is Home not out, but it has been endlessly delayed and probably won't be available until 2009 (if ever). I agree with most of the rest of their review. It's a great Blu-ray player for the price and has improved a great deal since launch (and I have a launch unit myself, so I should know).
But to suggest that PSN is now on par with Live because of Home is just not true. I have both systems and Live absolutely still blows away PSN. Home may make a difference, but we won't know that until it actually comes out. - Jade10145, on 06/05/2008, -5/+37I like my PS3...but for gods sake can Sony make an interface that I can use while in a game (i.e. 360 dashboard) It is annoying as hell to have to log out to connect with friends or do anything else.
- bigbadgoat, on 06/05/2008, -3/+35No, you ***** moron.
It got 720p added to it's blu-ray playback capabilities.
It's now capable of playing blu-ray in 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p.
before it was just 480i/p and 1080i/p, screwing over people with HD sets whose maximum output was 720p. - BrendanSheehan, on 06/05/2008, -18/+49Three words:
Little. Big. Planet.
I rest my case. - ratbear, on 06/05/2008, -28/+59Xbox Live is still light years ahead of PSN, although it is slowly gaining ground.
I never listened to the PS3 naysayers at launch, yes they had some stumbles but the hyperbole about the PS3 being a total failure was ridiculous. I personally don't have a PS3 and prefer the Xbox 360 for now, but I like the competition, and might just have to get a PS3 if they keep releasing compelling features and games (MGS4? Please. I refuse to sit through 45 minute cut scenes). - reuscel, on 06/05/2008, -29/+59I'm so glad I ended up with a PS3. I have a 360, and was reticent to buy a PS3 because of so many of the issues that were talked about at launch. Now, my 360 sits unplayed, and my PS3 is the new king of my entertainment system, and it will likely stay that way for the foreseeable future. Ratchet and Clank is probably my favorite game for the system right now, and GTA4 just feels right with the DualShock controller. Kudos to Sony for getting me on board, as I was initially pretty skeptical about their system.
- LANjackal, on 06/05/2008, -14/+41Nice come from behind by Sony, the PS3 is looking more and more like the most capable console out there, unless you're really into online gaming, in which nothing beats the 360.
- mywhitenoise, on 06/05/2008, -0/+26Remote play. You can access your PS3 anywhere that has a wi-fi connection.
- WhereAmI, on 06/05/2008, -4/+29http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=8273 ...
Seriously, be a smart consumer. - Managua8Green, on 06/05/2008, -0/+24Really? Only $133 worth of food in a year? Whats your secret? Is it heroin? its heroin, isn't it?
- therippa, on 06/05/2008, -7/+31Good article, and I agree. I bought a PS3 for its blu-ray capabilities the day Toshiba folded on HD-DVD, and if I had known all along about the media server capabilities I would have bought it a looong time ago, it replaced three components (oppo dvd player, hd-dvd player, d-link network media server) in my home theater and I get to play GTA4 and MGS4 (soon) on it.
- reyoo30309, on 06/05/2008, -5/+29If your going blue ray anyway you might as well just get the ps3.
- joegibes, on 06/05/2008, -1/+24Even with my 360 on standby (downloading a demo or something), it's still louder than my PC, refrigerator, and nearly every game console I've ever owned.
I still wanna see if the Dreamcast is louder though. - Psythik, on 06/05/2008, -3/+26I'm glad that Sony has wised-up and started to give the people what they ask for.
Now, Nintendo, it's your turn. Fix your online system (at the very least, abolish friend codes and add voice chat), and give us a hard drive already! - shinythingy, on 06/05/2008, -6/+29Burnout?
Also no one is saying the 360 has to die for the PS3 to be big - Modestexcuse, on 06/05/2008, -5/+27I own both systems, and enjoy them thoroughly. My advice in choosing your system is simple, choose the features that suit you. If you want good multiplayer online gaming, get an Xbox 360, if you want a system that offers HD quality video, the PS3 is a sure bet. Overall, I have found hardly any games worthy of purchasing for the PS3, but have bought 15 or more games for my 360. I bought the consoles to game on, and the 360 wins hands down. Just my opinion...
- c4mden, on 06/05/2008, -2/+24not only *can* you install linux, they make it simple to do. i was floored when i went into the options menu and saw 'install another OS'. now there's something you'll never ever see on a microsoft product.
- Evi1d33d, on 06/05/2008, -13/+35Why the ***** is everyone keep saying MGS4 have 45 minute cut scenes? Where's the proof? Most review sites are not even allow to comment on them.
Like any another game, you like it or you hate it. MGS fans will buy game for the awesome story and cut scenes while haters will continue to find reasons to hate them. And if you actually played any of the MGS games the cut scenes are very enjoyable. - BrendanSheehan, on 06/05/2008, -0/+22This is the best aspect of the PS3. It's a monster, but a very quiet monster. Thanks to those Japanese, the had the foresight to make a bigger case so they could stick in a far bigger fan than the fan in the 360, so it could turn much slower to cool the thing, which likely has more expensive bearings too, being that it's bigger and all. Resulting in a quieter set up. And they used the remaining space in that large case to fit in the power brick internal too. It was well planned, and even better engineered.
- bigbadgoat, on 06/05/2008, -0/+21you eat $133 worth of food in a year?
- readme, on 06/05/2008, -2/+23That should be coming this month, according to rumors.
- rhartman, on 06/05/2008, -46/+66Excellent and very compelling review ... except that the game lineup for the PS3 is still pretty bleak.
I have been on the fence between buying a Xbox360 and a PS3 and I'm leaning PS3 now (despite having owned a Xbox as my previous console) but it still just feels like I'd have a glorified Blu-ray player and nothing else. When are the games coming? Anyone care to enlighten me? - theaceoffire, on 06/05/2008, -0/+20The 360 is not ***** in my opinion, just like the Xbox was not *****. Yes the fanboys were ragging on the PS3 during launch, but we were having problems back then (Supply issues, lack of games, etc).
Hopefully the success of the PS3 will force Microsoft to offer the 360's online stuff for free (or lowered cost), will improve gaming for all gamers. - inactive, on 06/05/2008, -3/+23I have a launch version 20 GB that I upgraded the hard drive. I use a wireless ethernet bridge for the networking and I don't miss the card reader but I have to say that it is an outstanding gaming and media machine. It plays DVDs better than my Pioneer Elite DVD player, it plays BD exceptionally well, it plays my SACD collection for me, I don't need to bother playing CDs in it because it lets me rip them to the hard drive and I can browse and manage them from there like a Escient music server. It plays back content on my other PCs in the house. It will play back DVDs I rip using Handbrake. I can control it remotely using my PSP. ***** I can even log in remotely with the PSP and see what's happening in the room with the little Playstation camera attached to it.
I like to play games but it does so much more and it is quickly making other devices in my AV rack obsolete. - SniperGX1, on 06/05/2008, -0/+19Think of it as remote desktop for your PS3. Your game is running on the PS3 but u can see video and hear audio remotely on your psp
- mywhitenoise, on 06/05/2008, -2/+21Look man, I'm a hardcore MGS fan. Pretty much EVERY MGS release has had 45 minute cutscenes. MGS4 will be no exception.
- Narishma, on 06/05/2008, -3/+22I guess it's because it isn't important to 99% of the people interested in a PS3.
- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -15/+34Love my PS3
- SniperGX1, on 06/05/2008, -14/+33Actually it's cheaper the 360. PS3 = $400 360=$350 + more to play online + more for wireless
- santasing, on 06/05/2008, -6/+25I just got my second PS3 using the $100 gift card promo that Walmart has running. So, effectively I paid 300 for it.
- badlogik, on 06/05/2008, -5/+23If you don't want LIVE, which is the 360's strongest bonus, then it is cheaper. But if you ever get LIVE, it is instantly the same price as a PS3 and 50 bucks more expensive each following year. *That ignores the fact that the PS3 has wifi built in ($100 bucks for 360 addon) and has a Bluray player.*
- WhereAmI, on 06/05/2008, -2/+19Oh good for you!
My PS3 wireless was included. - dsmx, on 06/05/2008, -2/+19Actually it's 1 word LittleBigPlanet.
- Evi1d33d, on 06/05/2008, -0/+16Walmart if offering $100 giftcards to PS3 purchases.
- mywhitenoise, on 06/05/2008, -11/+273? If you don't include tax.
That seems about right since there's only 3 games worth playing on it (not including ports from the Gamecube/PS2 era). - theaceoffire, on 06/05/2008, -15/+31Ignoring the multi-platform games, there is the cool stuff already out ...
Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, both by insomniac
Uncharted, Very pretty
Warhawk, only multiplayer, very addicting
Heavenly Sword, short, hot chick, fun
Folklore, Pretty, 2 storylines/gameplays, very neat
And the downloadable games I like:
Spyro, PS1, Insomniac (awesome game)
Flow, used to be PC game, very mellow
Super Rub a Dub, lots of puns, cute, for family
Pain, brutal slingshot-body fun, not for family
Everyday Shooter, an art masterpiece/astroids/thing.
Rampage, (old game), ^_^ Giant wolf/gorilla/lizzard. ++Party.
Echochrome, trippy, mind bending puzzle thing.
Lemmings. Everyone knows this one.
High Velocity Bowling. good control, I hate some of the characters. Can play your own music though, so I don't have to listen to them.
and more stuff, don't remember it off the top of my head.
Coming up this year:
A NEW bioshock, built from the ground up to support ps3 hardware with new content, which should ROCK! *I hope*.
Resistance 2, with 8 player co-op with separate story line from single, squad based 60 player online play, and parts of the level being dynamically created to give you new experiences.
Little Big Planet, very awesome, high def game that allows you to make anything and share it with your friends easily. Its hard to explain, you have to watch a video or two to see how awesome this will be.
Final Fantasy 13! This thing is only cool if you are an FF fan, but I am drooling over the idea so far (Yeah, I know, fanboy, etc).
Probably some other stuff, but I didn't notice.
^_^ Also, the console is supposed to get Home and in game menu access this summer/fall.
Add that to generic parts for upgrading (Cheaper, better), rechargeable controllers that work from across the street through walls (Tested this, it was cool), the ability to play ALL Divx content off the hard drive (^_^_^), and free online access?
360 isn't bad, I just am biased towards the PS3. - sugarazor, on 06/05/2008, -0/+15You're living in a fantasy world if you think FF13 is coming out this year.
- Hickeroar, on 06/05/2008, -1/+15It only works for a very few PS3 games. All PS1 downloaded games though afaik.
You can watch any video or listen to any music over the remote-play connection though. - Snarfy, on 06/05/2008, -4/+18I've had to replace my xbox 360 three times while my original 60GB PS3 still works like a champ.
360 vs ps3 doesn't matter when the 360 doesn't work - bigbadgoat, on 06/05/2008, -1/+15what the ***** is 780p?
