- eatsleeptrumpet, on 02/08/2008, -6/+110Does that mean the PS3 will now be 20nm slimmer than before?
- krische, on 02/08/2008, -2/+71I dunno if they would really make a slimmer ps3 yet. Maybe just throw it in the current systems and bring the price down a bit.
- sanwedgy, on 02/08/2008, -4/+69They did that fast!
Doesn't seem that long since they switched to the 65nm chips. - zackintosh, on 02/08/2008, -4/+51Note: that photo is of the old, fat, ugly, 90nm Cell.
I'm still amazed that something that small produces lots of heat. - DarkDx, on 02/08/2008, -2/+47That's what she said.
Oh wait.... - chingy1788, on 02/08/2008, -4/+43The original PS1 was shrunk down creating the PSOne
The PS2 was shrunk down creating a slimmer PS2 then shrunk again integrating the power adapter into the unit
The PSP was slimmed as well
It is very likely that the PS3 will be slimmed as well
The PSP was out for 2 years before shrinkage
the PS2 was out for 4 years before shrinkage
The PS1 was out for 5 years before shrinkage
now according to that trend it is likely that we will see a slim PS3 this year - MonkeyFarts, on 02/08/2008, -0/+38Will it include an optical drive?
- inactive, on 02/08/2008, -1/+38PS3 Air
- hockey, on 02/08/2008, -1/+36What will it take to have a decent console discussion about the PS3 without the majority of the comments dugg down due to trolling?
Are you guys literally THAT pathetic? Normally one can ignore it but when it's every single PS3 thread. . . .
Geez guys grow up finally. - roxya, on 02/08/2008, -3/+29Yes, because these 'issues' stopped Naughty Dog from making the best looking game of this genera.. oh, wait.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 02/08/2008, -5/+31They must have thrown it into the pool with George Costanza.
- sockpuppets, on 02/08/2008, -3/+27Dogs and cats living together.... mass hysteria!
- kingmanic, on 02/08/2008, -1/+24Your paranoid. 45 nm was unheard of when the cell started production. 65nm was still high end and 90 nm was old tech and well understood. Given how long the cells been in gestation I doubt they even had plans for a 45nm process for any chip at the start. Remember the 360 only recently switched to 65nm and some models of the ps3 are on 65nm.
Smaller chips don't just happen. They take a lot of research in fab technology. It's like saying, why didn't they just stick a core 2 duo in the NES, obviously it's just bureaucracy keeping the core 2 duo from the original NES in 1984.... - Serapthi, on 02/08/2008, -0/+20No, but it will fit in a manila envelope!
- TypeEE, on 02/08/2008, -0/+20It save money because of material and time. For example, if one wafers can cut 100 cpus with 65nm, on the same wafer, it can cut 150 45nm cpus. So you have saved 50% of material. Also, you can save time since one wafer will give you 50% more cpus.
- inactive, on 02/08/2008, -0/+15"Besides, the major reason the PSP was slimmed wasn't really to make it smaller, but to combat piracy and homebrew."
No. It was slimmed to save money on manufacturing, make it weigh less, use less power, and most importantly, have TV out.
The Slims added no additional copy-protection/anti-homebrew methods - OccultVariable, on 02/08/2008, -0/+15Is this... a complete thought?
- hatdrop, on 02/08/2008, -2/+16why wouldn't the ps3 be able to run halo 3? that game runs perfectly fine on my toaster, do yourself a favor and play CoD4 instead
- fallenone05, on 02/08/2008, -2/+16if you own a 360 you should've come across those by now....
- inactive, on 02/08/2008, -1/+15You're thinking about the 360
- daborg, on 02/08/2008, -2/+16Ha. Ha.
Not. - exomni, on 02/08/2008, -1/+14Wanna bet?
- akkibaba, on 02/08/2008, -0/+1365 nm to 45 nm is a magnificent engineering feat. Think about it, we're now reliably manipulating matter to the scale of billionths of a meter. It's not as easy as "having foresight" and it's certainly not a corporate scam.
- AvidPreatorian, on 02/08/2008, -3/+15halo 3 should be a $7.99 PSN download, and i would still think twice
- fallenone05, on 02/08/2008, -4/+16Are you writing from 2006? Welcome to 2008.
- cruzer2727, on 02/08/2008, -0/+12Dude cancer has been cured like 5 times on digg. Stay up to date.
- azizrulez, on 02/08/2008, -5/+17i think they started with 65nm chips from the beginning,it was the 360 who went down to the 65nm from 90nm.
- fallenone05, on 02/08/2008, -2/+13You're not missing much, I have a 60G and the only PS2 game I've gone back to play is God of War 2 because I didn't finish it before I got my PS3. It's really hard to go back and play my old PS2 library when we have so much awesome next gen games out right now.
- krets, on 02/08/2008, -1/+12Pretty much the worst parts of the Bible...
- inactive, on 02/08/2008, -0/+11I have a 360 and even I agree with you.
- kingmanic, on 02/08/2008, -2/+13Buy an 80 or a original 60. I think the next step up will have BC.
- Muncher, on 02/08/2008, -0/+11Well, actually microprocessors do produce quite a bit of heat, even more so when you consider their size.
- grat2001, on 02/08/2008, -6/+16"I dunno" why you think Sony wouldn't shrink the size down, their history says they would. We most likely won't see the benefits from this till sometime this fall. By that time they should have a tremendous amount of momentum behind them game wise.
- mywhitenoise, on 02/08/2008, -0/+10"wait, no"? You like fat, unattractive, gold diggers? You sure know how to pick them.
- inactive, on 02/08/2008, -1/+11Nope, the 40GB was the first with the 65.
- Zoids, on 02/08/2008, -6/+16I want what you're smoking!
- DarkDx, on 02/08/2008, -0/+10But It's the PS3 Aiiiiiiiirrr!
- charlescheese, on 02/08/2008, -0/+10Right...all those problems we've heard of overheating have been plaguing the PS3...err wait! PS3? You must be thinking of the 360.
- triplehelix, on 02/08/2008, -2/+11your mixing up your consoles. the 360 gets complaints from owners while watching movies, the ps3 is whisper quiet.
- chingy1788, on 02/08/2008, -2/+11If that happens, they would cause a division by zero and thus creating a black hole which would instantly crush the Earth and everything around it
- groo68, on 02/08/2008, -1/+9Monopoly, they might even release it for their system.
- charlescheese, on 02/08/2008, -2/+10Right because I can't enjoy multiplatform games as a PS3 owner? HUH!??! WTF! That logic has never made any sense whatsoever. Most people only own one console, so if it's on their console of choice, it counts. Here we go again:
Uncharted
Ratchet
Resistance
Warhawk
Heavenly Sword
UTIII
COD4
Assassin's Creed
Burnout Paradise
Motorstorm
Orange Box
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Eye of Judgement
Lego Star Wars (I love this game at least)
Oblivion
Rainbow Six Vegas
Ghost Recon AWF
Rock Band
Guitar Hero III
Gran Turismo P
Super Stardust HD
Pixel Junk Monsters
If you can't find a bunch of games in there to keep you satisfied until the onslaught later this year, then you are not a gamer at all. I play games all the time on my PS3. I am never wanting and I own most of the games I've listed. There are plenty of great games on the system and anyone that says otherwise is totally full of *****. - AshamedAmerican, on 02/08/2008, -2/+10Armageddon.
- ghandi69, on 02/08/2008, -0/+8Google Moore's Law.
- kinseyincanada, on 02/08/2008, -0/+8theve tried that before, but then the deal went south and sony released the PS1
- Feyr, on 02/08/2008, -0/+7it's "cheaper" because in theory they make more processor per wafer of silicon.
a wafer is technically fixed in size no matter what you make of them (ie, 300mm wafers), so you save space (less wafers needed), material (same), and time (the same litho equipment now makes more chips at the same time)
of course i don't think people calculate the cost of developping the new process and upgrading the fabs when they say the chip is cheaper ;) - fallenone05, on 02/08/2008, -3/+10Dude! it's practically the same machine, it will consume less power and may be made slimmer. It's not what happened with the 360 where all of the sudden all the new 360's came with hdmi and a better chip in it to prevent it from red ringing, now that would be horrible!
- hatdrop, on 02/08/2008, -3/+10first you get the money, then you get the power, then you get the...heat savings
- GreenAlien, on 02/08/2008, -0/+6Why not skip the Gizmodo blogspam and read the real info on it.
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080207-ibm- ... - groo68, on 02/08/2008, -5/+11They can't upgrade the video card, they would lose all of the current owners business, and thats where they get their revenue. They can probably do the other things though.
