- TnTBass, on 02/22/2008, -2/+135Anything that helps games work across multiple platforms is a plus in my mind.
- JayD16, on 02/22/2008, -3/+60I'm still a little unclear on who gets access to this "free" IDE. Do they mean free to anyone with a dev kit? Free to anyone they deem a "developer."
Does it go even further and they mean free to anyone, as in Sony's answer to XNA? I'd love to hear that! - theaceoffire, on 02/22/2008, -3/+33Not to mention we might get more games like Flow and Everyday Shooter.
- chris9902, on 02/22/2008, -1/+30Sorry that's wrong. It doesn't say you NEED a PS3 debug kit it says "Runs on PS3 debug systems"
(ran out of edit time) - inactive, on 02/22/2008, -5/+34Can you put out fires with it?
- lacronicus, on 02/22/2008, -7/+31No it hasn't. Crysis has been reported by the devs to be too demanding for consoles.
- inajeep, on 02/22/2008, -3/+26Dead Rising got you to love your 360? I can think of a bunch of other games but to each is own.
BTW they didn't trick, they tripped. It sounds like they tied their laces and are now catching up. It will make for an interesting fanboy flamefest and even better environment for better game creations. Translation: Gamers win again. - zeromancer, on 02/22/2008, -1/+22no. it will only put out phyres, which don't actually exist in our dimension.
- bCabulon, on 02/22/2008, -0/+21I thought it was Far cry 2 that was coming to PS3.
- grexeo, on 02/22/2008, -3/+23This could mean top games for Linux and Mac.
- Mullinsmcd, on 02/22/2008, -1/+19A lot of ppl probably are wondering why Sony would do this considering this will help developers create games for other platforms. Sony is doing this because they want devs to lead on their console and help limit the amount of shoddy ports that we've seen lately. It already makes more sense to lead on PS3 and then port to X360 and PC (because PS3 is notorious for being the hardest to code for)but a lot of companies have been hesitant to do that because the PS3 has been the lowest in sales. Hopefully this will be a turning point.
- deadbaby, on 02/22/2008, -2/+19Sony is just a giant, slow moving, company. It may take them longer to get going but it's hard to stop them once they finally get up to speed.
- bigbadgoat, on 02/22/2008, -2/+19I'm currently in the planning stages of developing what is essentially a "game engine" for a full-motion ship simulator based on scene graph technology.
I've already looked at OSG, Orge 3d and others. I wonder how this would stack up in terms of versatility and ease of use. - GeorgeStone2, on 02/22/2008, -15/+31Crysis please :)
- Christbait, on 02/22/2008, -11/+27Get real :)
- LXicon, on 02/22/2008, -1/+17"99% of all PC games in the world" were not created using the PhyreEngine. that is the difference.
- FredFredrickson, on 02/22/2008, -0/+15Sounds like someone's getting audited...
- JayD16, on 02/22/2008, -3/+17No
- AvidPreatorian, on 02/22/2008, -4/+18you just won't stop talking..
- YojimboJango, on 02/22/2008, -0/+14If anyone remembers their history this is EXACTLY how they popularized the psx. When it first came out no one cared, then Sony turned out a bunch of API's and suddenly everyone and their uncle was making games for the system.
I don't own a PS3, and probably won't own one till They drop to around $200 (I'm poor), but this can only be a good thing for developers. - LXicon, on 02/22/2008, -2/+16i think the idea is that when the code is recompiled for PS3 it will take advantage of the PS3 architecture. there are probably some types of calls in the PC environment that sony already has the equivilant PS3 code for. the recompile will handle the conversions so the programmers won't have to learn them.
it's just a guess, but that would make sense. - Aharoni, on 02/22/2008, -1/+14This is an interesting strategic move by Sony. Microsoft's strategy was always "reduce the developing costs of games by making them as easily portable to as many Microsoft platforms as possible". While Sony doesn't have the luxury of multi platforms (well, PSP doesn't count) - they are obviously retaliating after seeing how many games are "coming to the PC and Xbox 360". Sony are trying to close the lead in this space...
But there are other ramifications here that are extremely interesting. Sony doesn't supply developers with the hardware - they supply them with the software infrastructure as well (the game engine). I wonder if Microsoft would up the ante and start offering a graphics engine of their own for free (Maybe the rumors about Microsoft buying Epic are true? offering Unreal 3 engine for any developer to work exclusively on the X360 worths a deal of billions). How about a free artificial intelligence engine? physics engine? multi-core efficiency engine? this can go on and on. Eventually platform providers won't just offer the hardware platform - but the entire software development tools as well in an attempt to lure exclusives. - xino, on 02/22/2008, -2/+15Crysis as it is today on the PC maybe too demanding for consoles, but it's possible they could make a game for the consoles and call it Crysis.
- estvir, on 02/22/2008, -4/+17No it hasn't. Crysis has been reported as being capable of being played on consoles on Medium to High settings with the recent progress ("Fully operational") made in porting CryEngine 2 to consoles.
They also said it wasn't as hard as expected and have said that they're "We're certainly looking at it and considering it" in regards to Crysis on consoles.
http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/51452 - steelclash84, on 02/22/2008, -0/+11Competition amongst consoles is a healthy thing.
- purag66, on 05/13/2009, -3/+12They want them to look at least EQUAL to the 360 versions. That's their number one priority now.
- CameronakaCam, on 02/22/2008, -4/+13I agree with AppleGeorge, I'm still a sony fan just kind of lost interest in it for awhile. But ultimately the Playstation will win the console wars for the seventh generation and will put up a strong fight in the eighth generation just like the PS2
- HyperJack, on 02/22/2008, -0/+9I think you are missing the meaning of cross-platform.
- Yrnn, on 02/22/2008, -3/+12Newsflash: PS3 users can use keyboards and mice too.
- aladrin, on 02/22/2008, -2/+10You need a dev PS3 if you want to run the game on PS3. For PC, there's no such requirement.
- etruscan, on 02/22/2008, -6/+14Actually, Microsoft is taking away from the indy game dev community.

...PhyreEngine and the free PSN are attempts to subvert this kind of thing. - inactive, on 02/22/2008, -0/+8$20K ? LOL I thought Epic charged something like $300K for their Unreal engine. Crazy *****...
- kingmanic, on 02/22/2008, -2/+10They may emulate the extra cores. So you can program and test on the phyreEngine and then recompile and test on the PS3 dev kit. They may have provided more compiler support for the SPU's. Doing a lot of the optimizing work in the compiler instead of leaving it to the programmer. The prgrammer decides how many threads he wants running and the compiler works out the details on which SPU and how many. The programmer could give the compiler "hints" on which thread will require more resources. Depending on what exactly phyreEngine does it could mean PS3 games will no longer take 50% longer then PC or 360 games to make. It may also mean non AAA studios and non AAA funding could create games with great graphics and no slow down.
- erkokite, on 02/22/2008, -1/+9Actually if Crysis is brought to PS3, they will probably use the OpenGL ES API that is native to the PS3 to reduce overhead.
- theaceoffire, on 02/22/2008, -1/+8I am digging you up with hope, not expectations.
- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -1/+8This engine was used in DiRT which was superior on PS3.
- pedepy, on 02/23/2008, -0/+7wow..
so game developers will write ONE code, then compile it for windows, xbox, ps3, mac & linux with just compiler options ?? ...
sounds crazy.. - Topher06, on 02/22/2008, -0/+7It was, created 3 games using it, just not a public release.
- m4lomb, on 02/22/2008, -2/+8Warning: XNA carries a license that does not allow distribution of comercial XBOX Games AND it DOES NOT ALLOW the distribution of NETWORKED games in ANY PLATFORM, that includes WINDOWS. Also, REGARDLESS OF WHICH framework you use, you CANNOT distribute games on the XBOX without getting a hefty license from Microsoft.
- kosan, on 02/22/2008, -1/+7"I call *****. Otherwise, 99% of all PC games in the world would be on the PS3."
You are assuming that 99% of all PC games in the world are built on the PhyreEngine which I can pretty much guarantee you they are not. - loroleg, on 02/22/2008, -0/+6I only remember them denying it :)
- deadbaby, on 02/22/2008, -7/+12Honestly PC/Windows gaming is on its last legs.... (I know some will disagree, so +IMO) I wouldn't expect Mac or Linux gaming to even be on their radar.
- chris9902, on 02/22/2008, -9/+14I don't it's free like XNA. one of the slides says you need a PS3 Dev kit.
- kingmanic, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5It might make a PS3 EMU a bit easier... 4 or 5 years down the road when a stable EMU is written. Or much later. Look at PS2 EMu's and even PS1 emu's.
- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5"I think the Wii proved that content sells game,"
No, it proves novelty sells game - m4lomb, on 02/22/2008, -1/+6I know of an engine that demands their logo shown at 1600X1200 logos because "what's wrong with giving due credit?" That is a deal breaker to me. The Unreal/Cry2 engines are great. But none of the top 10 cheapo engines do it for me as they are absolute crap. I will soon be using Sony's engine, not the egomainacs bullcrap.
- kingmanic, on 02/22/2008, -2/+6Ironically, the 360 doesn't have a standard way to manage the HD and thus so few games have an "install" option. Also the 360 have licensing policies against using the HD for installs or caching.
- Rocketbird, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4In fact, we will digg you up! Because you asked us to digg you down! Ha ha! We're so clever!
