- Topher06, on 01/31/2008, -10/+97I love even the negative connotation of this headline. Its like "Finally, after only 13 months, Sony games division turns a profit". It took Microsoft 5 years and 2 consoles to finally post a profit in its division.
- bigbadgoat, on 01/31/2008, -38/+117Sony's gaming division has been profitable for years, creating two consoles that rank #1 and #2 overall sales all-time. In fact, the only quarters where Sony's gaming divisions never turned a profit is before they released the PS1 (relatively no source of income during this period) and first few after they release a new console. No company has profited more in the last 10 years than Sony has.
- macromorgan, on 01/31/2008, -14/+67You mean they sold more PS3s worldwide than the Xbox 360 last quarter? Interesting little factoid indeed.
- etruscan, on 01/31/2008, -10/+59This is exciting, because Sony will now turn their attention towards new game developments to help boost the interest in the console, which is also garnering a whole lot of attention due to the demise of HD-DVD and growing interest in BluRay.
...and we PS3 owners could use some cool new game developments. :) - MforMike, on 01/31/2008, -6/+41The rest of the economy goes down, sony goes up, interesting
- MasterPlayer, on 01/31/2008, -8/+37The PS3 actually outsold the 360 last quarter which is a big deal considering the head start the 360 had. A lot of people say 2008 is the year of the PS3, and I'm actually starting to believe them.
- explnx, on 04/27/2009, -7/+34"No company has profited more in the last 10 years than Sony has."
This is incredibly far from the truth. In fact, sony isn't even the most profitable game company. From fiscal 1998 to fiscal 2004 (I think that is a good range, before the newest consoles and after everyone had their first 3d ones out), nintendo made 7$ billion profit in games to sony's 4.5. - Zamfir, on 01/31/2008, -5/+32I'm pretty sure Microsoft is the one who is bleeding cash... in the billions. Only recently have they posted a profit. They have a lot further to go to dig themselves out of their Xbox hole than Sony does with the PS3.
- widgetmaker, on 01/31/2008, -1/+25http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/31/business/31sony- ... the real article not engaget spam.
- bigbadgoat, on 01/31/2008, -1/+25Sony did it with the PS1, moron, back when Nintendo and Sega were the kings of the industry, and absolutely obliterated both of their consoles, so... what were you saying again?
- Topher06, on 01/31/2008, -2/+23Yes, they lost that kind of money when the PS3 was first released, over a year ago.
- triplehelix, on 01/31/2008, -3/+23considering that the ps3 has already sold roughly 9.6 million, with two full months to go, i don't see that 11 million mark as that unrealistic at all.
- Chewie67, on 01/31/2008, -3/+22Sony has certainly had their share of problems recently, but anyone who underestimates them in the console market is just being foolish.
They didn't sell a BAGAZILLION PS1 and PS2 consoles by mistake. Now that Blu-Ray has swept past HD-DVD, they're in prime position with the PS3 as well.
It seems apparent that there will not be one "winner" in this round of the console wars. Microsoft, Nintendo and now Sony are all doing very well... - Topher06, on 01/31/2008, -1/+20Sony never made the Cell processors, period.
- djSyndrome, on 01/31/2008, -3/+21Too bad you still have no idea what the ***** you're talking about, per usual. Other posters have said it above, but Sony's PlayStation division has been mostly profitable over the last fourteen years. Microsoft's? Not so much.
But don't worry - your precious XBox 720 will be here soon enough. Microsoft only runs a four year console life cycle, and the 360's time is almost up! - DrThunder, on 01/31/2008, -9/+26And they did it a year sooner then the Xbox 360.
- rusty123jimi, on 01/31/2008, -0/+16Regardless of all the negitive news on the PS3 in the last year...Sony never ceases to amaze me...!
- triplehelix, on 01/31/2008, -2/+17they are at roughly the break even point for manufacturing vs sale price, and with cheaper blu-ray parts on the immediate horizon, along with further die shrinks, they will have the option of being profitable on ever console shipped, then drop it to that magic $299 by xmas 08.
- Managua8Green, on 01/31/2008, -0/+15wife? Haha, I think you are being to generous
- asdfuiop, on 01/31/2008, -1/+16Typical Atari Lynx fanboy
- rstarr, on 01/31/2008, -4/+19Dude, haven't you learned that every game console is a "winner" with a good PR dept? You can always spin numbers in your favor.
- MWeather, on 01/31/2008, -3/+16Whether the consumer has it in their hands is irrelevant. The console was purchased from Sony. It's a sale. Besides, It's not like retailers just keep buying them if they aren't selling.
- Serapthi, on 01/31/2008, -0/+14Of course they should take your advice! What gaming company/professional corporation wouldn't benefit from the advice from a 360 fanboy?
- DarkPrince11, on 01/31/2008, -2/+16Epic Fail.
- bosssmiley, on 01/31/2008, -3/+17I thought that Sony *expected* to lose money on the PS3 for the first year or so of release?
As I understood it their strategy was to get Blu-Ray the maximum market share as quickly as possible so they could 'win' the HD format war (as they seem to have just about done now).
Now that Sony have sold several million PS3s (an anticipated sunk cost for them) they start raking in the cash from the game developers and from Blu-Ray DVD sales... - inactive, on 01/31/2008, -5/+18Sony counts sold to customers. They went on record as saying this, and they had to say it three times cause the interviewer was an *****. Like you
- exomni, on 01/31/2008, -13/+26"No company has profited more in the last 10 years than Sony has."
You are an ignorant, deluded dumbass. - Ajajadude, on 01/31/2008, -1/+14All things considered, 1.5 million off with 2 months remaining isn't all that bad.
- Malhavoc, on 01/31/2008, -1/+13I'm guessing you haven't read any recent impressions of LO. I'm a huge J-RPG fan, but minute long load times to get into a battle really doesn't sound very appealing. I'll hold out for FFXIII and White Knight Story.
- TypeEE, on 01/31/2008, -0/+12Actually, the most important aspect is ps2, it continues to give sony a lot of money to offset the ps3 lost
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -1/+13Team ICO needs to hurry up their *****.
- inactive, on 01/31/2008, -0/+12"The Cell was a joint venture between IBM and Sony."
And Toshiba. - Serapthi, on 01/31/2008, -0/+12Hmmm, title says, "Sony's game division finally turns a profit." Either you're not reading the same thing that I am or you're just pullin' crap out of your ass. Or both.
- robEstyles, on 01/31/2008, -7/+19True. Everyone forgets that even though the N64 and GameCube didn't do nearly as well as Nintendo expected. If you want to compare profits during that period the Gameboy and DS anally raped anything the PS1 and PS2 did profit wise.
- elvenseven, on 01/31/2008, -0/+11http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/8972/1200985727 ...
- SuperVepr308, on 01/31/2008, -4/+15I read a preview of RFOM:2 last night in GI and it looked pretty cool. If there was any reason I would even consider adding a PS3 to my 360 Elite, that might be it. I have always been a PSP fan though. Great little system and it sucked more people didn't get into them. The games seem pretty slim here lately.
- carlvjack, on 01/31/2008, -3/+14translation: im poor and bitter
- diggrim, on 01/31/2008, -6/+17Resistance 2, ftw!
- oldhick, on 01/31/2008, -1/+11The Cell was a joint venture between IBM and Sony.
- ibeetle, on 01/31/2008, -0/+10truspector--
Do you make this stuff up on your own or do you have to log on to XBL and chat it over with 8 or 10 others. - djSyndrome, on 01/31/2008, -2/+12Japan (duh) and most of Europe (surprising).
- AvidPreatorian, on 01/31/2008, -2/+12thank god your advice doesn't mean ***** to anyone but your wife and yourself. another buried to hell comment, keep them coming.
- cadmiumpaint, on 01/31/2008, -1/+11video game hardware is very unique in the tech industry in that it is designed to be around as is for years. There is a certain patience that Sony can afford to have, while good releases trickle out and make the system more attractive
- drizzlelicious, on 01/31/2008, -4/+14It will only rise higher. The PS3 only continue to sell better and better, with the whole winning the whole format war and all
- Serapthi, on 01/31/2008, -1/+10...I had a nice comment prepared, with some facts and all that jazz but I deleted it because I realized that I would've been arguing with a blithering idiot.
- RetlawST, on 01/31/2008, -1/+10Not necessarily. There's R&D, initial set-up, advertisement, and work hours put into a system before it is released. Nintendo wasn't selling enough Virtual Boys to cover the costs of making it, and they realized that they would never reach the projected number required to profit from it, so they sold what stock they had left and called it a loss.
- Lionhart, on 01/31/2008, -0/+9Well if you want a Blu Ray player it is pretty much the way to go.
- jdeuel, on 01/31/2008, -7/+15Finally? How long did it take the 360?
- doubledave, on 01/31/2008, -0/+8the Wii and 360 are great consoles, no doubt.
the reasons i purchased a PS3 were 1) blu-ray player 2) media hub 3) hdmi port 4) i personally like the controller (and bluetooth) better 5) and a favorable price comparison vs 360 when factoring in having to purchase wireless add-on and xbox live fees.
edit: i don't care about backwards compatibility, either
Games I generally care about are released on multiple platforms, so that to me was a wash. -
