- MCA2142, on 02/25/2009, -5/+56A month or two ago, Sony stated that they were at the same exact number as Xbox Live, 17 million.
When asked how they determined this number, they said that the said number included everything from sony's online forum accounts to registered users on PSN's website.
Xbox on the other hand, are counting actual Gold and Silver accounts registered on the console. And since Live is now more than 17 million, as this announcement was made last year.

As for multiple accounts, i have a US account but we are the exception not the rule. Your average PS3 own doesn't know ***** about the other stores never mind signing up for them.
- oblique63, on 02/25/2009, -5/+35That is pretty cool, but as much of a PS3 fan that I am, I have to suspect that a lot of those are just alternate accounts, since there seems to be quite a discrepancy content-wise between the different localizations of the PSN store; like the US-only video store, and such... hell, even I created an alternate european account just to play the Killzone 2 demo earlier this month (totally worth it btw)...

For example, Microsoft could easily say that every single person signed up for a Hotmail or Live account has a gamercard for XBL (technically, they do). Do you think that number would be less than 20 million? Xbox reached 17 mil before christmas last year and they are only counting accounts registered on the console.
For example, I recently purchased Dawn of War II for the PC. When playing this game, it uses my Xbox Live account via Gmes for Windows Live. Now all my Xbox friends can see me and contact me while I'm playing a game on the PC.

so it removes all non 360 owners and all accounts that people made that are not active.

- Topher06, on 02/25/2009, -4/+12I think with the PSN being free, most people will set up a PSN account, and make use of the features it offers. Games like R2, Call of Duty, LBP, and other multi player games require a PSN account to play online.
This just begs the question that if the Xbox Live is so much better then the PSN, and Xbox360 has around 28 million units out there, then what are 10 - 11 million Xbox360 owners doing if they are not Live members? They are not playing multiplayer games or using online services with their Xbox360.
These numbers are huge for Sony as more independent game developers and main stream multiplayer game makers are going to realize there is just a larger online community on the PS3 then the Xbox360, and I think you are going to see in the next year or two a shift away from the Xbox360 from these comapnies.
I also don't think its the norm for most users to have more then 1 account, I just recently set up an EU account to get Killzone a week earlier, so perhaps the numbers are a little elevated because of that, but I think most people don't realize there is different content available in different regions. But on the whole the adoption rate for PSN is larger then for XBL, largely because a free network > paid network. - piper999, on 02/25/2009, -4/+12He didn't say they played online but to show up in the stats they have by definition to at least have connected to Xbox Live.

- cthellis, on 02/25/2009, -1/+7...that are likely multi-platform games that you purchased on your 360 for whatever reason (usually "to play with friends online" or "I like the controller better" top that list), but are perfectly well playable on the PS3--or on the PC--as well.
Offhand, I almost always meet people who ONLY count platform exclusives for the PS3, but count _every other game_ in the 360's corner when they make comments like this. Which is... you know... not rational.
If someone has more friends who own PS3s (or PCs, or both, which I find more common among my frineds) and they pick up their multi-platform games there, doesn't it tend to turn the 360 into "only having about 4 or 5 really good games" but having TONS for the other platforms, if one is being that critical about the exclusives selection? - WatW, on 02/25/2009, -5/+11I have a PSN account. Their TVs do not suck. Find me a TV with better HD picture then their 52" 120hz Bravia, for the same price or better. The whole purpose of his account is to spam anything Sony. I'm glad my life is not pathetic like that. He really has all the signs of having an inferiority complex. (I only use mine for blu ray) But I also have a PSN account...but I never use it, and I'm sure that's a common thing. How many of these 20m users are active? How many are double accounts? and how many are just Playstation fans online?
I would like to see some real numbers from the Playstation and 360. Because it's obvious they both lie. -
