- Raptor007, on 12/18/2008, -8/+66"Most worryingly, the report adds that the developers found a 'security loophole' that allows them to upload or delete any file to or from the Home server, which means that it is potentially an option for hackers to spread viruses through Home."
Wow, that's a pretty serious security failure. - Theresa42J, on 12/18/2008, -9/+47Anything can be hacked.
- Sabin, on 12/18/2008, -17/+52Now how about making it useful or fun?
- IVIrMP3, on 12/18/2008, -8/+31It's an Open Beta
- Elranzer, on 12/18/2008, -2/+17BD-R prices pretty much make back-ups too expensive to bother.
- JackSchittt, on 12/18/2008, -11/+25People use Home?
- inactive, on 12/18/2008, -6/+19According to the article, Home wasn't hacked. It's like saying adblock plus on firefox hacked the internet. It didn't.
- jerrycan, on 12/18/2008, -10/+23Call me when I can play backups...
- haikuFU, on 12/18/2008, -1/+13You can buy a 1TB drive for under $100 now. Who says you have to burn it back to BD?
- thomasewhitejr, on 12/18/2008, -11/+22Do you know how many expensive PS3's there are out there connected to the internet? Do you also know that the PS3 is also just as capable as a computer to be used to attack people? I know there are alot of people who would like to have PS3 drones to carry out say DDoS attacks. Did you also know it wouldn't be too trivial to write software that runs on the PS3's architecture? All that the article didn't mention was code execution via Home. So, all they need to figure out is another flaw in Home to allow them to execute their code on the PS3 turning it into a remote controlled drone or something. You fail.
- Raptor007, on 12/18/2008, -6/+15I don't think you actually read the article.
- WhereAmI, on 12/18/2008, -11/+19First of all, viruses would have to be written to Home. Second, the uploads are not beyond what he has permissions to see.
For example, I could write a script that uploads something to my Digg pictures. I could also make one to delete my Digg pictures.
Does that mean I hacked Digg? No. - Elranzer, on 12/18/2008, -7/+15PS Home is only fun if you like playing with dolls.
- monkbot1, on 12/18/2008, -2/+10Has someone invented a hack that allows you to log in to home?
- tendonut, on 12/18/2008, -9/+16How about making my avatar not look like a toolbag, while not making me spend 50 cents on an imaginary shirt. If I want to spend 50 cents, i'll go buy a REAL shirt (at the Salvation Army....)
- Zamfir, on 12/18/2008, -1/+7Of course this made the front page... and it's totally inaccurate. Home uses HTTP, open standards... instant hack? No. You can delete your own files... so? You can download other files that the Home client does... so? You can see all of this traffic using tcpdump or wireshark... so? I can configure my home gateway the same exact way, so that when i browse the web, all images are of goatse. Have I hacked the websites I'm visiting? No.
Wake me up when you can delete someones else profile, or actually reconfigure some part of Home for everyone... you know... actually HACK something. - uberduger, on 12/18/2008, -4/+10"viruses aren't a problem outside of Windows"
Come on, we both know that's a lie.
The only reason that so many viruses hit Windows is that a lot of it's users don't know anything about computers or network security.
If a virus coder were to *actually* discover an exploit that would allow them to upload anything to Home's servers, I have no doubts that they'd be able to turn everyone's PS3's into a botnet pretty damn quickly. - inactive, on 12/18/2008, -1/+725+ GB iso. No thanks. I rather buy the damn thing then download it. Although delicious Homebrew. Thats why i love my PSP.
- Zizhou, on 12/18/2008, -2/+7NOBODY hacks the Gibson.
- veriix, on 12/18/2008, -0/+5Ok people digging me down, I have a computer sitting in my room not connected to the internet or a network, I will give you $1000 if you hack it. Good luck.
- truncheon, on 12/18/2008, -4/+9awesome!! now i can finally upload my giant penis avatar and pretend I'm in Second Life!!!
"You got cocked!" - hotjava23, on 12/18/2008, -3/+7Being able to show one's movies or play music saved from your ps3 sounds good, they should make that a real option.
- spawnfree, on 12/18/2008, -2/+6well at least someone is having fun with home.
- jacksons98, on 12/18/2008, -3/+6Just because you upload something doesn't automatically mean it's going to be recognized, accepted or do anything malicious. I'm pretty sure if Sony was worried about it they would've either patched it or taken it down until it's fixed. People sharing pictures and video files have always been something that they said they wanted people to be able to do in HOME. Sounds like sensationalist journalism.
- stainboy, on 12/18/2008, -2/+5I HAVE NO KEYBOARD
- drakenlot, on 12/18/2008, -1/+4Actually, there's been ONE Mac virus that I can remember.
It really isn't a problem outside of Windows. - MindgameMike, on 12/18/2008, -2/+5"Most worryingly" huh did I misread the article, by the sounds of some hackers have improved it. Sony should pay them.
- PhantomRogue, on 12/19/2008, -0/+2@Mick
Heh, you expect Sony to use MICROSOFT.Net? - Zamfir, on 12/18/2008, -4/+6You mean 256-bit AES? SSL is a protocol, not a cipher.
- jacksons98, on 12/18/2008, -4/+6Don't buy it then... Nobody is making you do anything.
- Phalanxia, on 12/18/2008, -3/+5"To customise their PlayStation Home experience beyond the options provided by Sony"
Bwaha! I cracked up when I read that. They may not be trying to, but that sentence stinks of classic *****. - Topher06, on 12/18/2008, -4/+6B E T A
- BarriedaleNick, on 12/18/2008, -3/+5I'm surprised they can get on the servers - always busy.
- ahhell, on 12/18/2008, -4/+6Just like your mom.
- vizeroth, on 12/18/2008, -1/+3The music industry's downfall isn't the end of physical media, it's the end of control over exposure and distribution channels. New artists have any number of avenues to gain exposure online and distribute their media (both physical and downloadable). Smaller labels are gaining strength because they can also use the internet to gain better exposure and distribution, and to find new artists to sign before the major labels get to them. The industry has also been unable to move to higher quality media, and the success of downloads show that many people don't care if their music sounds even as good as it would on a CD.
If we see consoles get rid of physical media, it will be because the developers and manufacturers have decided they want more control over the sale prices and want to kill the used market. It would be interesting to see how something like that impacts console sales, though, since there is still a significant audience that doesn't have good broadband access, and BR discs are already 50MB (and games are already using that capacity).
On the other hand, physical media will definitely move beyond Blu-Ray because they'll need more capacity for higher resolution movies and for games and software in general. It's really amazing that the CD lasted as long as it did as a storage medium, given the relatively small amount of data it can hold. On the other hand, it was a much larger leap in storage capacity over the common floppy disk and the cartridge formats that consoles were using than DVD is over CD, or BR is over DVD. - lazerflesh, on 12/19/2008, -0/+2Awesome, play your own videos in your home area or your friends. Sounds like fun. Sounds like something they should keep.
- poet, on 12/19/2008, -0/+2Hey veriix, what's your address?
- veriix, on 12/19/2008, -0/+2Ok, I put my address as well as my phone number in a text doc on the desktop.
- HolyChimp, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2But the reason we put up with adverts in TV is because it pays for the content. Why the hell would we put up with adverts in our own videos when we could just quit home and watch them ad free?
- pigfister, on 12/18/2008, -4/+6the whole point of home is to constantly target their crap adverts to you while sony make billions from selling air time to mcdonalds, gap, pepsi, ect.
- inactive, on 12/23/2008, -0/+1Home has goals. Meeting new people, seeing bonus game content, matchmaking for games, setting up multiplayergames
- WhereAmI, on 12/18/2008, -3/+4""viruses aren't a problem outside of Windows"
Come on, we both know that's a lie. "
I said they are not a PROBLEM, of course one CAN be written for the PS3 or other systems.
@mickstephenson
I should have included the code examples that StreetSkaterFU or whatever the script kiddy's name is that he used to "demonstrate" upping and deleting files from home. It went along the lines of /home/upload.jsp=&DELETE. All he did was find a functionality that has no interface in Home. No "hacking" has been done here. - robbieeeeee, on 12/18/2008, -1/+2Hahahaha.
- vizeroth, on 12/18/2008, -3/+4They can just set it up to interrupt your video every 15 minutes for 5 minutes of commercials, then it will be only slightly less annoying than watching broadcast television. They could interrupt the music after every track with 2 minutes of commercials and it would be significantly less annoying than broadcast radio.
- rowlodge, on 12/18/2008, -4/+5it wont be long before somebody's nuts are on there.
- AmazingSteve, on 12/22/2008, -0/+1Is this the hack that makes it good?
- mwilhelm, on 12/18/2008, -1/+2Sony should quit beating around the bush and just let the community develop for them. It would save them alot of $$ and headache.
We all know the only reason the PSP didn't flop is because it has a HUGE homebrew base. - SkullAndXBones, on 12/23/2008, -0/+1Black Hogans, Now Thats a Hack.
- username9000, on 12/18/2008, -4/+5Good, maybe the hackers can fix it.
in other news, Sony removed voice chat today in home....to make it better. lmao. that is true btw. - jacksons98, on 12/18/2008, -3/+4Actually they have always said from the beginning they want people to be able to do that. This is nothing but sensationlist journalism.

What is Digg?
The Digg Toolbar for Firefox lets you Digg, submit content, and keep track of Digg even when you're not on the Digg site. Download the official
