- Bermygoon, on 05/15/2009, -4/+29Things learned from PS3's difficulties
-Programmers need to be consulted heavily during system design. Don't assume they will always be there.
-Awesome exclusive games are a must, especially in the early cycle of the system ie. give early adoptors a reason.
-$$$, Don't expect gamers to pay extra for other things besides a gaming system (blue ray)
-Don't underestimate your competition, when they reduce their prices you better follow
-System loyalty is important but doesn't mean automatic success
Considering the chance for success the PS3 had, it will probably go down as one of the biggest failures in console history. Although I hope Sony has enough success with the PS3 that there is a PS4, competition is always a good thing for consumers. - inactive, on 05/15/2009, -2/+25Is the PS3 still selling at a loss per unit?
- inactive, on 05/15/2009, -7/+26PS3 is by far the best blu-ray player out there.
Picture is sharp, and color tones are the deepest of all players without bleeding.
It is also one of the best DVD Up-converters I've seen, and a hell of a gaming system. - KineticShampoo, on 05/15/2009, -2/+19Yes.
- keyforce, on 05/15/2009, -7/+20PS3 Fanboys have said that every year....
- MisterFurious, on 05/15/2009, -12/+25"The company is aiming to boost its games division, with a 30 percent increase in sales of the PS3, to 13 million units for the fiscal year."
How do they expect to increase sales in PS3 when you can buy 2 XBox360's for the price of a single PS3? They are as pigheaded now as they were in the Beta days. They're so convinced that they're building a better product that they don't believe the consumer cares about price. In the videogame business, the parents are the ones who choose. They see one videogame system at $399, the other at $199. Whether the XBox 360 doesn't have all the PS3's bells and whistles makes no difference. All they see is the price.
Sony, take your head so deep out of your ass and develop half a brain. Cutting the price of the PS3 to match the XBox 360 means you'll lose more money per unit, but it's not the 100% you lose if you sell NONE! It doesn't take a Harvard MBA to figure that out... - spyrewolf, on 05/15/2009, -2/+14HD-DVD > Blu-r......oh nvm
- JCEEZ, on 05/15/2009, -2/+14your comprehension of exchange rates hurts my brain
- winnersguard, on 05/15/2009, -1/+13Last time I checked, FFXIII was coming out on both, but FFXIII Versus (the other title in the series) was a PS3 exclusive.
- mike23w, on 05/15/2009, -6/+17Sony has lost it's touch.
I can't name one product that Sony makes that is the leader in it's market.
IPod > Walkman
Xbox360 > PS3
Canon and Nikon Cameras > Sony
Philips, Toshiba, Panasonic TV > Sony
Kindle > Sony Ereader - frepnog, on 05/15/2009, -1/+12"God of War 3 will also save the PS3. Both of those titles are to be very big hits."
recycled beat-em-up will not save PS3.
neither will an exclusive "FFXIII" versus edition.
just as Killzone 2 did not. just as Little Big Planet did not. just as Metal Gear 4 did not.
the machine STILL costs too much, three years after launch.
a serious price drop WILL save the PS3, and then I believe it will finally catch up to or surpass Xbox360. Until then.... - frepnog, on 05/15/2009, -1/+11buy your ***** games, toolbox.
- jadedsunrise, on 05/15/2009, -3/+12Looking at the current sales via vgchartz.com, I can say with certainty that it is going to be almost impossible for the PS3 to catch up to the 360, unless you can somehow justify to me that it can make up 10 million + units in ground.
Square is now releasing FF13 for the 360 as well. I really don't think Killzone + Little Big Planet is enough to save this system. Sorry. - KnightMareInc, on 05/15/2009, -2/+11hasnt microsoft lost more with just the RRoD repairs?
- jacksons98, on 05/15/2009, -14/+23in Defects
- kelmaster1, on 05/15/2009, -1/+9Subtract the bigotry from your statement and I would almost agree with you.
- stubear, on 05/15/2009, -5/+12I guess bribing the film studios to use Blu-Ray is coming back to haunt them. Sony should have joined the HD-DVD technical committee early on and helped steer a single standard more towards some of the things they wanted in Blu-Ray instead of going it themselves like they have done with past technologies that have failed as well.
- petebot, on 05/15/2009, -3/+10Really? You're going to block him for stating a preference?
- keozen, on 05/15/2009, -2/+8As far as I know there ISN'T a markup. They lose money on every system (making their money on games). It was that way at launch anyway.
- phosphor112, on 05/15/2009, -0/+6Are you ***** stupid? I'm sorry, but wtf are you smoking? ALL PS3 GAMES ARE BLURAY. Getting rid of the ***** bluray player renders it WORSE THAN A PS2. Want to know why? Because you wouldn't even be able to play ***** PS2 games. UUUUUUGHHHHHHHH *facepunch*
- DaDiggydiggyDOC, on 05/15/2009, -2/+8Also I'm a 360 fan since I own one, but don't think that sony going out of business will help out the game industry, in fact it would only hurt it, and you since MS and nintendo would be the only games in town and would also bend you over more since you have no other real options out there.
- fuzzynyanko, on 05/15/2009, -0/+6Nah, not the biggest failure. There's still systems like the Saturn, the CDi, the 3DO, and the Jaguar. However, Sony is starting do "last place console" tactics, like propping up the game library with their own published titles
- stk198323, on 05/15/2009, -3/+9Yes yes and resistance 2 saved the ps3 also! Oh no wait...
But metal gear solid will save the PS3... oups again, no!
Maybe Gran Turismo 5 will save the PS3... ah ***** it the way it's going GT5 will be released on the PS4 and not the PS3!
I own a PS3 by the way so it's not only to say xbox is better, I don't care about that. The only thing I care is how Sony is arrogant and full of ***** lately. Thinking that because it bears the Sony logo people are willing to pay more for it and that they can get away without any price cut is borderline corporate suicide! - jadedsunrise, on 05/15/2009, -6/+12I think he's right to the tune of 9 million more units sold
- Barbarino, on 05/15/2009, -0/+5Release GT 5 before 2015 may help them or allow it on the 360...
- frepnog, on 05/15/2009, -0/+5"My husband and I sold our (lone surviving) X-Box 360 because it was so incredibly heavy on the FPS genre"
that is like saying that you sold your tv because it is heavy on the reality show *****.
sure, there are alot of FPS games, but there are TONS of other genres there too. if you like video games AT ALL there is alot to like on xbox. - frepnog, on 05/15/2009, -0/+5"@welestgw - That would make no sense at all. What would Sony do when everyone started complaining that their stripped down PS3 could not run MGS4 or any other 9Gb+ game? It would be a total PR disaster."
if Sony had just went with DVD in the first place, the games would have been made to fit.
More space on disc does NOT mean a better looking game, no matter what the PR reps want you to think. It just takes talent. Gears Of War is on a DVD. Looks every bit as good as anything on PS3. GTA4 looks BETTER on 360 than it does on PS3. just sayin. - Bermygoon, on 05/15/2009, -3/+8
Yes I do believe the PS3 is "one of the biggest failures in console history"; not based on what Sony has done but what they should/could have done. PS2 dominated the last console generation and Sony went from first (with nobody even close) to third. They turned loyal customers (people that bought first few months) into consumers that are indifferent; how many PS3 owners are going to buy a PS4 no questions asked just because of the PS3.
For example when 'new coke' came out sales for it were actually very strong if you compared it to any new soft drink. Now 'new coke' is used in business schools for what not to do. - chadsmith729, on 05/15/2009, -1/+6I think the overall global economy is showing it's true colors. It's hard for every country if it's Japan, UK, US or any others for that matter. This is just a showing of the poor state that everyone is in. Another example would be yesterday when all the Chevy dealers were closed. Don't get me wrong, Blu-Ray is really great. It's just too expensive. I love the PS3, but once again it's too expensive. I think that Sony might really take a long hard look at the true cost of producing a PS3, and possibly not mark it up 500%*.
*- I don't know the actual mark-up percent but I would imagine it's about that. - petebot, on 05/15/2009, -2/+6Yeah, like Microsoft! They build their 360s in... China? damn.
- arunforce, on 05/15/2009, -2/+6I'm pretty sure both Sony and MS aren't making a profit from their gaming divisions, I don't see why everyone is bashing Sony calling the PS3 a failure.
- frepnog, on 05/15/2009, -0/+4"the fact is that dvds are on the way out"
better check your "facts". dvd's are going NO WHERE. they outsell Blu-Ray discs by a margin of over 100 to 1. - dododohead, on 05/15/2009, -2/+6are you under the impression that FFXIII is some kind of holy grail? There's plenty of PS3 games that sold well and leave just as good impressions. There are more games that will release this year that are probably equal to or more groundbreaking than FFXIII.
So we have to make a list everytime,,, I want to give credit to those developers who actually make gaming enjoyable and don't need to have "FF" in front of their name.
Valkyrie Chronicles, Little Big Planet, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, Resistance, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted, Infamous, Siren Blood Curse ....and later this year: Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, God of War III, MAG, GT5, - DaDiggydiggyDOC, on 05/15/2009, -0/+4Hind sight is always 20/20... The only thing that I can say about sony with regard to the PS3 was that the initial $500-600 price point didn't win any new people over. This is business though and in that you have to take risks, in this case blu-ray(which I really like, but hate the price!!). Who knows what the next 3 years will look like? All I do know is that they need to sell a whole lot more console to make money on the back end with software or they are really going to be in a world of hurt IMO.
- Charlie1er, on 05/15/2009, -0/+4If Sony can't stay on the market for the next-next-gen console, somebody will take the place. Somebody with big money. Can't wait to see de GboX Chrome!
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -1/+5And here, presented for your amusement and edification, we have one eramos, who has apparently been in cold storage since the 1940s and is still laboring under the impression that the Japanese (and probably Germans and Italians) are still somehow the "bad guys." A curious case indeed.
- Mike17102, on 05/15/2009, -1/+5Sure there is, sales.
The 360 is way ahead in consoles sold and thats even counting PS3s that were bought as nothing but BR players.
In game sales its not even close, 360 is crushing the PS3. Thats what really counts when you want to know how well system is doing. - WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -2/+5No... "Japanese" isn't offensive. "Japs" is like saying "wetbacks" or "micks." I trust the distinction is clear.
- phosphor112, on 05/15/2009, -1/+4Sorry STK, but you're wrong. The logic is correct, but the article disagrees..
http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2009/05/15/sony_p ... - Rudegar, on 05/15/2009, -1/+4I for one will bail them out and buy a sony tv one of these days! :P
- frepnog, on 05/15/2009, -0/+3"i do wonder what impact the replacement policy is having on microsoft's profit margins as well."
basically, imagine taking a 5 gallon bucket, and dunk it in the ocean.
it's like that, basically. - LocalDocal, on 05/15/2009, -0/+3@Mship
No one is saying that FF isn't a system seller; everyone [who is not an idiot] knows that. I believe what Dodo means is that even if FF is a very popular series, it's not magically going to help any console win the race. He listed numerous games that are as well known and loved (MGS) and as well received (GT, GoW, etc) as FF, yet it seems strange that people thinks a new FF installment will make all the difference.
Yes, I know that FFVII arguably helped the PSX get the jumpstar it needed over the N64, and go on to win the 32-bit console war, but it is notable that FFVII is still the best selling installment in the series. It really was just the exception to the rule. - stk198323, on 05/15/2009, -1/+4Nintendo MIGHT be caring about gaming but certainly not about gamers!
At this point all 3 companies care only about this: $_$ - ahhell, on 05/15/2009, -0/+3Off topic but I LOL'd.
- Rioracer916, on 05/15/2009, -1/+4By that logic, CDs > tapes
You realize that these media formats are made by many, many companies right? - AmazingSteve, on 05/15/2009, -6/+9Shhh. Facts make fanboys cry.
- JCEEZ, on 05/15/2009, -0/+3its the business model that pretty much everyone else uses.
-Here buy this razor for cheap, but you have to buy expensive blades every 2 weeks.
-This car starts at $12,000, but leather is another $2000, splash guards another $150 etc.
-This scoop of ice cream is $2.50, another $1.50 for a cone, another $1 for toppings
-We will give you this cell phone for $30, but you have to pay $50 a month for service for the next 2 years
etc. etc. - Elranzer, on 05/15/2009, -0/+3You know what happened when Microsoft had no competition?
8 years of Windows XP
6 years of Internet Explorer 6 - MRintheKeys, on 05/15/2009, -4/+7Sony had a full year over Microsoft when it launched the PS2 over the Xbox. Yet they didn't hesitate to put out their sales figures and how they were trouncing the competition. It was even inferior hardware. Now the roles are reversed.
