- Hollic, on 01/11/2008, -7/+45Not that I disagree with your thoughts, but I'm digging you down because I hate that you always sign off with "-Pie", as if we really need to know it's you that said it. I promise, we'll look at your name if it's important.
- Leion07, on 01/11/2008, -4/+30Actually, all models after July of last year have HDMI support.
- twtmc, on 01/11/2008, -7/+29Xbox Arcade has HDMI. Not to say I don't agree with you, just stating the facts.
- bdawg123, on 01/11/2008, -6/+28Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the 80GB model still an option which is backwards compatible? Problem solved.
- AydenV2, on 01/11/2008, -4/+26They aren't doing poorly, just average.
- BattleScars, on 01/11/2008, -3/+18Microsoft have modified the 360 enough times. Let's see: core, premium, elite, arcade, halo 3, core with HDMI, premium with HDMI. Some of which have falcon others don't. Some of which are 65nm, others aren't. Some of which have newer heatsinks, others don't. Do you see my point? It's got to the point where people don't know what they're buying anymore.
- amneosis, on 01/11/2008, -2/+17So this is 'drops' as in drops not drops as in 'introduces'?
- hokie47, on 01/11/2008, -7/+20Because now it looks like Blu-Ray is going to win, I might just get a PS3. Cost of a stand alone Blu-Ray DVD player is around $350-400. Cost of a PS3 is just a little more than that and it can play games too, sounds like a good deal for a person like me who owns no gaming systems.
- mrASSMAN, on 01/11/2008, -1/+12Except it's not a 1:1 conversion.. it's 1.10:1
- 350Zed, on 01/11/2008, -2/+12Google "product improvement" or "product line optimization" or "marketing 101" and you just might prevent yourself from posting with such ignorance.
- 350Zed, on 01/11/2008, -0/+10110:1 = Yen:USD
- bejayel, on 01/11/2008, -1/+10Yeah, if you buy $300 of extensions. It does however have HDMI now though. He was wrong about that.
- chriskzoo, on 01/11/2008, -1/+9...says a man who probably has a 360 which is on its 5th iteration
- bigbadgoat, on 01/11/2008, -3/+11Yeah, I sure enjoy having to fork over another $100+ just to play xbox games and a lot of live's services
- trotskyist, on 01/11/2008, -21/+29Sony doing poorly in Japan?
Isn't that one of the signs of the Apocalypse? - dissident, on 01/11/2008, -0/+8by then you'll be able to run them flawlessly with an emulator on virtually any PC....
- bdawg123, on 01/11/2008, -1/+9Like Microsoft hasn't done the exact same thing. At least ALL of the PS3 variations have hard drives and HDMI. Can you say the same thing about the 360?
- bigbadgoat, on 01/11/2008, -0/+7yes.
- bejayel, on 01/11/2008, -0/+7Its only $100 more for the 80 gig. It has twice the HD space AND it includes some parts of a PS2. The extra hardware pushes the cost up. Thats what you pay for extra features.
- MacEnvy, on 01/11/2008, -2/+9"Microsoft removes backward compatibility from XBox 360 (Arcade Edition), and Microsoft is praised."
I don't remember that. I remember everyone bitching about it. Why in the world would anyone be praised for removing functionality? - GorEjaKz, on 01/11/2008, -1/+8Well even though backwards compatibility is good, there are people who aren't gaming Gurus. The removal of the backwards compatibility is for those that seek less expensive methods of getting Blu-Ray players or simply don't want to spend as much on the PS3. While I agree that removing the compatibility sucks for some people, there may be many others who don't really care about it and rather not spend the extra money to have the feature.
For the record, I purchased the 60GB version as soon as I heard about the ending of its manufacture. Good thing I found one too. There were only 2 left in the store. Even if I were ripping my hair out with the fact that I didn't get the original PS3 with everything it originally came with, it won't be too bad to have an extra console to clutter up your entertainment display. I rather like to see my 20+ years of gaming. - neo926, on 01/11/2008, -7/+13They do? Is that why the Wii has sold 2.5 times as many units as the PS3 in Japan?
- Cyber_Akuma, on 01/11/2008, -1/+7Any 360 is backwards compatible, you just need a HDD plugged into it, no HDD = no BC, no matter what version of 360 it is.
- cbreaker, on 01/11/2008, -0/+6Not to mention the 80GB also has the memory card readers and two more USB ports.
- shelbygt33, on 01/11/2008, -1/+7the 40gb DOES have backwards compatibility ... with PS1 games.
- bejayel, on 01/11/2008, -1/+7For the love of god, YOU get the choice of whether you have backwards compatability or not. BC is NOT dropped, you're just too ***** stupid to go compare the 80 gig with the 40 gig.
- bejayel, on 01/11/2008, -0/+5FTA : "Both Sony and Microsoft have released multiple hardware revisions and packages since launching their gaming consoles, but today Sony has announced a bold step: the company is discontinuing the 20 and 60GB PlayStation 3 models in Japan, effectively ending backwards compatibility support in that country. In Japan the 40GB model, which will not play PS2 titles, will be the only unit available after the two other SKUs are sold out at retail, and will cost ¥39,980 ($341)."
This only effects Japan though. - tattertech, on 01/11/2008, -7/+12I agree the lack of backwards compatibility is disappointing. I loved that with the PS1, after I picked up the PS2 I actually just gave my PS1 to a friend - wasn't worth trading in to me, and I had no use for it. Shame I wouldn't be able to do that with my PS2 if I pick up a PS3.
- Ninjaneer, on 01/11/2008, -2/+7Backwards compatibility was a real deal breaker for me, as well...which is why i ran out and bought a 60GB model when they announced it was dying here. Looking back it was a bit of a mistake because even with the upconverting, PS2 games still don't look good on my living room tv. I still enjoy them much more on my PS2 in the bedroom. I could have easily waited on a 40GB model and saved myself a few bux.
- inactive, on 01/11/2008, -1/+6Do both CD and PSN based PS1 games work on the 40?
- Brasky, on 01/11/2008, -3/+8OR maybe their emulation software is almost complete so the excess hardware isn't needed?
- bejayel, on 01/11/2008, -1/+6You were doing good untill you said PS3 isnt backward compatible. Try buying an 80 gig version. God damnit some people are stupid.
- bigbadgoat, on 01/11/2008, -1/+6the 80 still has a PS2 graphics chip in it.
the 60 had the processor and the graphics chip.
the 40 has neither. - bigbadgoat, on 01/11/2008, -0/+5but if it had BC, it'd probably cost $30-$50 more
- hockey, on 01/11/2008, -2/+7If you are all that concerned about backwards compatibility just keep your PS2. If you then complain about having to keep another console around and the mess the wires make then turn in your gamer membership card along with your still working SNES, Genesis and N64.
- inactive, on 01/11/2008, -1/+5All consoles should stick to one model and pimp it hard to the public. All of these SKUs are silly and ends up causing more confusion and disappointment.
- pegisys, on 01/11/2008, -3/+7I still have to chuckle at Sony for blasting MS about there backwards capability not being real backwards capability. Then they go and do basically the exact same thing.
low end no backwards capability; High end backwards capability with emulation. Well at least with the 360 if you ended up wit a Core/Arcade and want backwards capability you can buy a harddrive - DarKnight90, on 01/11/2008, -3/+7You just need the hard drive.
- NSMike, on 01/11/2008, -2/+6"Barely worked"? You'd have to dig pretty deep into the XBox games archive to find a title worth playing that doesn't work with it. And they continue to update it, which is more than Sony appears to be doing. And they didn't "remove" BC from the arcade version, they just re-branded the Core edition, which in both cases never had BC to begin with because the HDD is not included. If BC is truly a major selling point for you, you'll buy the edition with the hard drive anyway. Same with the PS3, buy the edition with BC if it really matters to you. Problem solved. The difference here is that you're locked into a total lack of BC should you buy the low-end PS3, whereas with the Arcade, the hard drive can always be added on, should you want BC down the road. Tell me again, which one has the real disadvantage, here?
- DisposableRob, on 01/11/2008, -5/+9The Arcade Edition is still as backwards compatible as the other versions of the 360. It just requires the HDD, like it always has. I'm not sure where you got the idea that it wasn't.
- PitifulLoser, on 01/11/2008, -3/+780gb is still backwards compatible.
- inactive, on 01/11/2008, -1/+580gb model would be fine for me, i rarely play the older ps2 games, except for a few, as long as it has wifi, and i think i would like the card reader to.
- jspegele, on 01/11/2008, -1/+5I'm looking at Australia, but I still don't see your point.
- shelbygt33, on 01/11/2008, -0/+4well, you can install games on your HDD to lower load times - it depends on the game how much space they take up (mbs to maybe a GB?)
And the HD trailers that you download seem to take up a good chunk of space.
And I have a few albums saved to the HDD, along with a few of my divx files.
with all of that said, I still have well over 25gb's free on my 40gb PS3. I may be a light user, but I think there is more than enough space. - JRumph, on 01/11/2008, -2/+5Ok, so the 60gb PS3 has a hardware emulator. That cost too much to make so they dropped it and put a software emulator into the 80gb. I don't understand why they can't put that software into the 40gb version as well. The software has already been created, so there is no additional cost for them to put it on the 40gb. Am I missing something?
- blankoboy, on 01/11/2008, -0/+3Bring on the 45nm RSX model already please.
- fani, on 01/11/2008, -2/+5Except there aren't any good games for it. Thats whats holding me back. Xbox360 is the best gaming console this gen. even with the current XboxLive problems, its still light years ahead of PSN.
I'd recommend an Xbox360 for a good gaming experience ( many superb games are Xbox360 exclusive - gears of war, bioshock, crackdown, halo3 etc. ), a PS3 if you really want a BluRay player.
Else wait a bit till more good PS3 games come out later this year. PS3 may even undergo another round of good update by then.
I'm planning on a PS3 around Fall-Thanksgiving this year. If they have good games by then that're PS3 only. Else I always buy Xbox360 version - spyder91, on 01/11/2008, -1/+4You/re right to a degree. The 80GB still doesn't have hardware emulation that was in the originals (they called it the "emotion engine"). The software emulation is similar to that of the 360 in that it doesn't support ALL games. With the Xbox, I've never found it to be an issue because most of the games I used to like were bigger releases and thus supported. With the PlayStation camp however, there were TONS of awesome niche games that will no longer be supported. In all honestly I support dropping backwards compatibility all together. If I want to play an old game, I hook up that system. Regardless of my thoughts, that's the current state of it.
- Vician, on 01/11/2008, -1/+4Well, those extra 2.5 times as many could be to the non-gaming casual crowd. He did say "most gamers", which, as we all know, isn't Nintendo's biggest growth area. They wouldn't be getting the numbers they get without the casual people who just enjoy Wii Sports, Fit, and their ilk.
- bejayel, on 01/11/2008, -3/+6This wasnt choice. It was nothing more than a money grab. The integrated HDMI and Wireless would have cost another $30 for each console to put in. There was no excuse for not including it outside of being money grubbing bastards. Even the console producers themselves say that the peripherals is where the money is at. Microsoft is just taking advantage of that.
