- altodarknight, on 01/07/2008, -45/+96Anyone see a problem for the PS3 when the PS2 is selling more over such an important sales period, especially after the price drop and cheaper 40 GB SKU? Especially since the Xbox 360 sold 3.4 million over the same period, a full 2.2 million more which makes it's sales 285% more than the PS3s. The Wii's is probably level or more than the 360s (I am yet to see their stats) so that leaves Sony lagging behind quite considerably.
With the ds just overtaking the PS2 is worldwide sales, I'm quite sure it sold more than PSP over Christmas period too!
I'm quiet concerned with the state of the PlayStation brand, it was such a great product will great games with the PS1 and 2, then I think they started to focus to much outside of gaming. - roxya, on 01/07/2008, -19/+63The fact that you think the PS3 is lagging behind shows that you only care for the American market. Microsoft are lagging behind in the other two major markets.
And I really, really doubt that Sony are unhappy about the PS2 still managing to push over a million in a month :) - truspector, on 01/07/2008, -14/+55The stylus goes on the bottom screen, not in your ass.
- totorototoro, on 01/07/2008, -13/+46Now that HD-DVD's obituary is being written, the PS3/Blu-Ray advantage will start becoming more apparent.
Until more quality games start shipping, Sony would be smart to bundle a free Remote Control take advantage of all the Blu-Ray news coverage. - zetsurin, on 01/07/2008, -16/+49News just in: PlayStation brand selling 2.5 million units (not including PSP sales) and Digg users try to spin that as a negative. More news at 8.
Absolute terrible news that Sony's most profitable platform is selling the best. Idiots. At least Sony are continuing to provide choice. - xTRUMANx, on 01/07/2008, -10/+42On the flip slide, Sony's PS2 is still selling impressively and considering Sony gets a cut of every title produced on its system, I don't think its as big as an issue for Sony as we may think. If the PS2 stopped selling completely and the PS3 sales didn't pickup, then Sony's gaming division would really have a problem.
- Aleman360, on 01/07/2008, -21/+47PS3 is a great system. I hope it sells more.
- cambob76, on 01/07/2008, -14/+38I couldn't hold off any longer. Bought one just before Xmas. I'm not a fanboy, but compared to the X360 I think it's the better deal. I got the 40 GB for $399, including the F1 game free, and a premium turkey and a $25 gift card; all from Superstore. If I wanted the X360 with HD-DVD ( a moot point now, I know), wireless and at least the 20Gb HDD, it would have been about $700 bucks without a game!... and then there's the battery packs and Live subscription. I had my doubts but I think Sony is going to make a comeback esp. with the Blu-ray news.
- zetsurin, on 01/07/2008, -4/+27As does the Wii.
- Postmodernism, on 01/07/2008, -15/+37I think I'll finally take the plunge and get myself a PS3 once Tekken 6 hits.
- wedges, on 01/07/2008, -2/+24PS2 is selling well because it is $120, has a great game library, and there are people out there that are, in a word, poor. It's a great choice for gamers that haven't been able to afford modern game systems.
- cambob76, on 01/07/2008, -1/+22I asked the same question about the X360 wifi. Ok, so its not included but why the ***** does it cost over $100? The 120 HDD is stupid expensive too.
- zetsurin, on 01/07/2008, -8/+26Where the hell did those betamax touting idiots go all of a sudden? I guess they'll be back with the stupid rootkit 'jokes' as that's all they will be left with now. I notice they are a few desperately clinging on the the 'no good games' falsety...
- bigbadgoat, on 01/07/2008, -7/+24wow. check out meta critic, you couldnt be further from the truth in terms of the PSP
- AvidPreatorian, on 01/07/2008, -5/+22It's hard to speculate about PS3's future until it's main attractions come out in 2008. Sony has a marketing strategy, it's a good company and has experienced flawed launches before. To cross PS3 off right now is just foolish, it's only been out a year and faced strong competition from Wii and 360 on both price levels and content, and despite that, it hasn't flunked. In fact it's holding onto quite good sales numbers - especially outside of the US. I have a PS3 and yes I only own three games (rest I rent) but I am waiting for 2008 content with great anticipation. I had a 360 when it launched and I didn't buy anything but Call of Duty for a good few months, and King Kong I just sold back to GameStop... In addition, the media center I always dreamed of which streams from my Macs and PCs is now in my living room, bluray is something to experience and then you're hooked, and that's why I love the system and that's why I sold my RRoD 360 for it. I'm not going back
- manstein01, on 01/07/2008, -3/+19It's an affordable system with a massive library of games, many of which are quite fun.
- djSyndrome, on 01/07/2008, -4/+20Why would you be 'scared silly'? The PS2 didn't sell in huge numbers until its first two killer apps were released a year after the system launched. Oddly enough, those games were Final Fantasy X and MGS2 - the same two franchises that will likely finally push the PS3 into more homes.
- damnyooneek, on 01/07/2008, -8/+22Overall the PS3 is a better deal since microsoft tries to nickel and dime everyone (wireless adapter, live fee, rechargeable batteries, hd dvd add on) in the end a person ends up paying a lot more than $350. As soon as more good exclusive games come out for the PS3 it will sell faster.
- macromorgan, on 01/07/2008, -9/+23I still don't understand why people continue to repeat the tired mantra of "the games are not there". My PS3 library consists of: Motorstorm, Oblivion, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted, Guitar Hero 3, Rock Band, Assassin's Creed, and The Orange Box. In my view, Ratchet & Clank bests every exclusive game on the 360 save Mass Effect.
The only system where you can say "the games are not there" is the Wii. - mdaize, on 01/07/2008, -7/+20warhawk, unreal tournament 3, resistance fall of man, ratchet & clank are just a few of the titles that have great replay video..
- 1uk34dd0, on 01/07/2008, -10/+23I've bought a 40GB PS3 for myself over the Christmas period - I love it. I did already have a Wii though.
The PS3 just needs more good games. - Braingoo, on 01/07/2008, -14/+27then your doing it wrong.
- wedges, on 01/07/2008, -8/+21jesus christ, MGS4 is NOT coming to 360. Give it the ***** up already.
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?i ... - MxM111, on 01/07/2008, -4/+17I thought he was talking about world numbers, no?
- volacide, on 01/07/2008, -6/+19that it's exclusive to the playstation 3. There hare been 2 official MGS4 exclusive to PS3 announcements.
- charlescheese, on 01/07/2008, -3/+15I don't know, a lot of people bought PS2 as a DVD player first, and that didn't seem to hurt it too bad.
- gebx, on 01/07/2008, -10/+22Blu Ray win will help the PS3, its one of the cheapest Blu Ray player availables
On a the other side though, people who use PS3 as a Blu Ray only player will give the console a low software attachement rate and will make the PS3 less
attractive to developers - Claude1971, on 01/07/2008, -0/+12birds of a feather
- Cyrus042, on 01/07/2008, -7/+19What games were there for 360 in 2006? Gears of War and ... ? It was the same case for 360 in its first year, and it seems to be the same history that everyone is willing to forget. As far as games, PS3 has done better in its first year than 360 has done. Admittedly, the PS3 architecture has made things complicated for developers, but with the better support of Sony SDKs and visually superb games coming from first party (Ratchet, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted) and even third party (CoD4, UT3) big third party players like EA have no excuse to not at least match the performance of the 360 if not surpass it.
Sony has a great list of big games coming out in 2008 and will more than rival what Microsoft did in its second year. So let us please get away from the "no games" comments. From PS3 to August 2007 it was a completely legitimate complaint, but not anymore. The only big complaint from me is the PSN which needs to shape up pretty soon as XBL is the last big advantage that 360 has.
In regards to other diggers, the PS3 has higher sales in virtually every other territory besides the US. Almost all of Europe except for the UK and then Japan and Australia. If you're looking at worldwide sales, the PS3 has matched the 360 sales if you align the launches. 2008 will be a critical year for Microsoft and Sony, and 2009 will likely reveal who, if anyone, will hold the largest market share for this generation. - dsmx, on 01/07/2008, -9/+21Yep real problem for sony shifting 4 million consoles over the christmas period
- inactive, on 01/07/2008, -3/+15the PS2 cost like a fifth of a PS3. they are making tons of money off of it.
- heavyd14, on 01/07/2008, -1/+13Cheap. Kids want a playstation, naive parents go to store, see cheap PS2, buy cheap PS2.
- Wolfbeta, on 01/07/2008, -1/+12"6 (?) year old predecessor."
3 months short of 8 years. - ryeland, on 01/07/2008, -4/+15To say the PS3 has no great exclusives is silly. Resistance is a great game, especially considering it was a launch title. Motorstorm is a phenomenally fun, fast paced, and beautiful racing title. Rachet and Clank is simply stunning graphically, easy to learn, challenging and a joy to play. Uncharted is one of the best games i have ever played, it is severely underrated. If you have a ps3 and have not played Uncharted, go rent it, you will not be disappointed if you are a fan of the genre. Warhawk is also a good game.
There just haven't been the massively over-hyped games that the 360 has enjoyed. Halo 3 is a great game, but not worthy of the hype it gets. Gears is a fantastic game, and well worthy of the hype as is bioshock. But take those two away and there are no real other mind-blowing exclusives for 360 either. - dscomeau, on 01/07/2008, -1/+12I doubt those people buying PS2's are also buying a Wii and/or Xbox360. You just can't beat the PS2 for console value (at least amongst ones that are still producing games).
It's like saying the iPod Touch is doomed because the iPod classic is outselling it. - minoss, on 01/07/2008, -12/+23I really like the PS3 hardware from a value perspective. When you add in the cost of HD-DVD and the ridiculously overpriced wireless controller for the 360, the value starts to show. But the simple fact is the games are not there, and in the end I'm buying a console to play games, not look at the hardware. Maybe in 2008 the games will come for PS3 (MGS4, FFXIII, etc).
On a side note, why the ***** does my DS have built in wifi yet the 360 does not? And then they have the nerve to charge $100 for what should be included. - giveer, on 01/07/2008, -3/+14You're right, however, there's a difference between the PS2 selling over one million in one month during the Christmas rush, and selling a million a month - which would indicate selling a million every month, which isn't happening..
- inactive, on 01/07/2008, -5/+16The PS3 has higher sales at this point in its life than the Xbox360 worldwide, and the PS2 is still selling better than both. I dont see how or why Sony should be scared, worried, or otherwise. The playstation 3 is gaining heat because of things like the blu-ray deal and a cheaper 40 gig version. There is absolutely nothing wrong with, nor should sony be scared about the playstation brand
- djSyndrome, on 01/07/2008, -4/+14The 360 also had a year's head start. Come talk to us in twelve months when the PS3's library has tripled in size from what it is today.
- superkendall, on 01/07/2008, -2/+12The developers of at least two games, Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank, didn't seem to have a hard time at all.
- damndj, on 01/07/2008, -2/+12Yes, confirmed as a PS3 exclusive only.
- zetsurin, on 01/07/2008, -3/+13The first challenge is getting the console into people's homes. Then those people will notice it also plays some pretty good games. It's the opposite strategy as games players realising the thing can play hidef movies. It'll pay off.
- r00ts, on 01/07/2008, -1/+10I'm more looking forward to someone giving you a shot of reading comprehension.
- Aggaman, on 01/07/2008, -2/+11Spot on. The real story is how next gen gaming hasn't really taken off yet. I have both the 360 and PS3, and it's only in just over the last year that there have been really good games for it. The PS3 reached that stage a couple of months ago with Uncharted, R & C etc. I don't think Sony should be bothered at all. On the other hand, I think Microsoft will rue not putting an HD drive directly into their console.
- inactive, on 01/07/2008, -3/+12PSN uses dedicated servers, Live uses Peer to Peer
Which means PSN has better in-game performance (in terms of stability, less lag, less vulnerable to exploits like lag attacks, no host advantage, higher player counts, faster matchmaking) - kingmanic, on 01/07/2008, -3/+12PSN vs Live. Free is a lot better then not free. The Credit card set up in infinitely better. PSN allows me to place or drop a CC at will. Live requires a 45 min phone call to a filipino call center, speaking to 3 people to repeat exactly the same information to each and then a 30 day wait to remove a CC. I've never had much trouble finding matches although they don't have a uniform ranking system like live but I'm not looking for that these days. Either place has it's share of potty mouthed 15 year olds.
- kingmanic, on 01/07/2008, -1/+10Progress is being made. Once one developer develops a trick, it goes into kit they may resell. UT3 highlights what the PS3 can do and the code base is for sale. thus overtime the hard programming problems get solved and it becomes easier just to link libraries. Remember the PS2 was a nightmare to program for initially until certain places started making engines and compilers.
- cambob76, on 01/07/2008, -0/+9You've got a point there but it still feels pretty wrong to have to spend $90 for 20GB and $180 for 120GB.
- inactive, on 01/07/2008, -3/+12well there's tekken dr online which is pure awesomeness
- inactive, on 01/07/2008, -2/+10The PS3 uses a 5400rpm sata laptop drive as well and i just put a new 320 gig in it for less than what the 120 gig costs for the 360. Nice try though bud.
