- CrimsonBlur, on 06/02/2009, -34/+161I think there seems to be some confusion about how this compares to Project Natal from Microsoft. This is not better than Natal, really not in the same league. If you were to compare the two motion capture technologies, Natal is "next-gen" and Sony's new motion control camera is simply EyeToy + a wand controller.
Fanboys, before you bury me, hear me out. I am a happy PS3 owner (I also have a 360). Natal is far more advanced than Sony's new camera. The PS3 motion controller requires you to use a wand in order to track your movements. In fact it does not track your body movements at all, it only tracks the position of the wand.
Natal, on the other hand, scans your body and tracks it in 3D, no wand needed. It also includes voice recognition. However, if a game wants to use an object or a controller so you have buttons, it can do that, too. Sony's solution cannot do both. - tekn04, on 06/02/2009, -12/+116Also, when I first saw it, I thought it was a dildo.
- freebird4, on 06/02/2009, -18/+105No more ***** motion control. ***** you Nintendo for starting this *****.
- Crazymaniacc, on 06/02/2009, -6/+84No rumble? The ladies won't appreciate that.
- billjimbob, on 06/02/2009, -2/+70After watching all three big E3 conferences, I have this to say: competition is good. :)
- NathanCH, on 06/02/2009, -18/+84Wow Digg hates Ps3 no matter. Both motion control things are pretty lame and mean nothing until we see some games for them. You guys are selecting the winner based off tech demos? The games we have today are what matter and in terms of games PS3 has a great lineup.
GT5, Final Fantasy FOURTEEN, GOW3, Heavy Rain, ICO, the new Rockstar Agent game. The list goes on. - tekn04, on 06/02/2009, -67/+132Absolutely awesome. Wow. You've got to see the video demonstration to fully appreciate this. It's like Natal except better - not only easy, precise (most likely even more precise then Natal), 1 to 1 detection, but also buttons.
Awesome. - TeflonFong, on 06/02/2009, -14/+65I think before you declare Project Natal the winner over the PS3 motion controller you should first actually wait until it launches.
- Richandler, on 06/02/2009, -12/+57There is no reason Natal can't detect controllers or objects. Specifically even 360 controllers or actual swords or bows would be recognizable. Combined with voice commands and motion you could really be truly interactive.
- Sniper, on 06/02/2009, -36/+78Your a moron if you think no controller is a good thing.
- ArcadeJunkies, on 06/02/2009, -15/+56You are absolutely correct. Yesterday when I saw the Natal demo, I was already saying to my friends that it can do so much more when you use it with hardware, and in fact needs hardware to do precise movements like twisting your wrist for a bowling game.
But the fact is, Natal can do everything you saw EyeToy2 do PLUS read your full body or other objects. The objects you saw on the screen (bat, sword, gun, etc) can also be done on Natal, it is just software. So it is superior.
For example, you could have a gun-shaped piece of hardware for an FPS with all the buttons you need to play that type of game. Then if you walked into a room and were surrounded, they might yell at you "drop your weapon and put your hands up", and you literally would have to lay your gun on the floor and raise your hands.
The future of gaming looks great indeed! - RoroCo, on 06/02/2009, -4/+45A dildo is probably cheaper and comes with rumble off the bat.
- TeflonFong, on 06/02/2009, -2/+43Precision and 1:1 mapping is also a question that needs to be addressed whenever discussing motion control now. We see Nintendo addressing it now with motionplus and we caught a glimpse of what Sony has in mind with the sword demo they previewed...the guy tickled the enemy and was able to lift his chin with the sword. In the Project Natal demo a kid kicked and the avatar kicked...but can that kid lift his foot on the enemy's chin and will the enemy's neck move up? There is still a lot of questions- we will find out soon enough, and as an owner of all 3 consoles I am excited.
- freebird4, on 06/02/2009, -14/+54You're a moron.
- GeorgeStone2, on 06/02/2009, -9/+42Yeah, they knocked this up in 1 day.
/s - inactive, on 06/02/2009, -3/+32I love the Power Glove, it's so bad.
- tekn04, on 06/02/2009, -14/+39Why would you want no controllers? It just limits gameplay. You wouldn't have no trigger on a gun.
- tenio, on 06/02/2009, -2/+22At first I was very skeptical ( i was watching on g4) but as the demo progressed it started to look really cool. I do wonder about the cost, eye toy + 1-2 controllers for everybody wanting to play.
On another note, Mod Nation Racers looks really fun to play. As cool as racing simulators are, some of the most fun racing games are the less-realistic ones. (Mario Kart) - deepmenace, on 06/02/2009, -6/+26the wand is 1 to 1 movement. exact. realtime. you move, it moves.
natal isnt. the wii wasn't.
there is no contest. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/02/2009, -2/+21Right, they just flew the two engineers out to E3 and conceived this entire demo last night. Things like this take a lot of planning. It didn't seem rushed at all. It just seemed like they were showing off tech.
- dogstylee, on 06/02/2009, -3/+21GT5 has been at every E3 for the past 14 years, at least.
- johnbellone, on 06/03/2009, -3/+20No, we saw a demo from Sony and we saw a prerecorded video from Microsoft.
You're welcome for the correction. - xerograde, on 06/02/2009, -4/+21get a brain! morans
- GeorgeStone2, on 06/02/2009, -8/+24I think MS will do what the Wii did.
Bring out a product when the tech isn't really there.
Nintendo promised the experience shown in the sony demo, but delivered something much crappier.
MS are doing the same.
I predict that it will be glitchy as hell. But then maybe nintendo will perfect it for the Wii 2. - cyrix, on 06/02/2009, -1/+17I'm just curious how much natal is going to cost when it's released.... Does anyone have any ideas? I can't imagine it being cheap
- SirPsycho, on 06/02/2009, -3/+18Yes, Microsoft's technology is cooler, but Sony's is more practical.
- Hybred1234, on 06/02/2009, -6/+20Natal wasn't even a tech demo, it was a pre-recorded/rendered demonstration. At least with the worthless PS3 controller you know it works as presented.
- Dropperbr, on 06/02/2009, -18/+32Trigger a air imaginary button with natal? no thanks, sony controller has way better precision for fps.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/02/2009, -3/+17Yeah, I knew people would be ***** themselves comparing Natal to Sony's new motion sensor tech, but what grabbed me were the games. Sony's game line up made me start thinking about finally buying a PS3. Microsoft, not so much.
- Sfenton, on 06/02/2009, -3/+16Or how about ***** the consumer for buying over 40+ million Wii's?
- salimdao, on 06/02/2009, -3/+16the Playstation Eye itself does in fact track your body (see games like Operation Creature Feature and Trials of Topoq). the PSEye with the motion controller only tracks the controller.
- Sfenton, on 06/02/2009, -1/+14$89.99 or around that price, that's what they said at E3 during the tech demos for the press.
I can't imagine it being more than the Wiifit. - EDmAN, on 06/03/2009, -2/+15Seems to me that Sony's motion controls will be more reliable. Microsoft is going to have work out a lot of bugs before Natal becomes a relevant gaming device. I could easily see from Sony's controller how I could be locked into a virtual sword match. Having the physical controllers will work better especially with fast motions and precise movements. Plus I think the PSEYE2 can probably do a lot of what Natal can do already with just some software upgrades. Voice commands have already been done and Sony's will probably hit the market first.
- cyrix, on 06/02/2009, -1/+14Why would you want them to die? Competition in the market place is a GOOD thing you troll. I would hate it if there was just one mainstream console that had a monopoly on the market.
- snobrder218, on 06/02/2009, -4/+17Nintendo pwned? What E3 were you watching. I saw nothing that I was like OMG AWESOME! Sure, new Metroid and Mario....but Wii Vitality....wtf?!
- EDmAN, on 06/03/2009, -0/+12your right, you got dugg down but you are right. Sony's PSEye can already do most of what we saw Natal do, the controllers will make it more accurate.
- AGONYTUESDAY, on 06/02/2009, -2/+14let's hope Sony can do what Nintendo failed miserably at. no one was sadder than me when no good swordfighting games came out for the wii, the guns sucked, and the sports games were only loosely attached to the motion controls. I think Sony knows that it has a smarter audience, so it will try harder to please its target audience.
- dogstylee, on 06/02/2009, -10/+22It looks like ET's penis.
- Elranzer, on 06/02/2009, -3/+15Rumble is a last-gen feature...
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/02/2009, -4/+16Light years? Please. Go watch the Natal demo video again and enjoy noticing the lag between player movement and character on screen movement.
If you can see that even in their promo video, what do you imagine the actual performance is going to be like? How accurate is it, and *gasp* how USEFUL is it going to be for GAMES?
It's much easier to imagine games that take advantage of 1:1 wand movement as apposed to games that use "full body control" in a way that's significantly different than the EyeToy. - giveer, on 06/02/2009, -1/+13Wow. I'm glad that everyone involved with the video game industry works hard at making awesome products, because let me tell you, they certainly have had no time for public speaking lessons.. poor fella, he sounds as nervous as hell. hehehe...
- darkstar107, on 06/02/2009, -2/+14I don't see how anyone got owned. I was disappointed by the announcements made by all 3 companies. With Microsoft showing just a promo video of the motion technology we don't know even how well it works. Unless I see it actually being used in a hardcore gaming environment, I remain unimpressed with the idea that it sounds better than it actually will be.
- Slym, on 06/02/2009, -4/+16I'm sorry, but the thought and planning required to bring about a presentation on this scale just wouldn't allow for a lengthy inclusion of the motion control tech demos as displayed. It doesn't make sense to say that they rushed it.
- TeflonFong, on 06/02/2009, -3/+14depends on the game...on what they previewed like that ricochet demo the no controller interface works well, but for a star wars game or a firt-person shooter I want something in my hand.
- bdawg123, on 06/03/2009, -1/+12And you should know all about sucking balls, right puft? Or is it NodFlenders today?
- theaceoface, on 06/02/2009, -4/+15As with Natal, I'll believe it when I see it. The proof is when is deployed in real world gaming. In either event I find this and natal are positive steps froward, but ultimately, Id consider them after thoughts to the overall console plan.
- DarkShroud, on 06/02/2009, -0/+10How would you know?...
- DreamVsPs2, on 06/02/2009, -3/+131:1 looks hot
- Big2hd, on 06/02/2009, -2/+12Can't wait for this thing to come out be implemented in some games(the archery demo was really cool).
IMO it would easier to use this rather then Natal in a actual game already out in the market.(you're gonna need buttons ounce awhile).
Have to admit the Natal beats this in the coolness factor(probably might have to get one if they line up some cool things with it), but sorry 360 owners, it's rather gimmicky(nightmare to use this on some games) and you bet Microsoft will treat it that way(bascially what wii is and should've been but on a 360) with low end party games.
PS lets work on design Sony(you put some rumble in that thing and some crazy ***** gonna be happening) - Achaean, on 06/02/2009, -3/+13I agree. Project Natal sounds great and is really really ambitious and the same applies to Sony's motion controller. But before I start running around saying, "OMG this is awesome," I want to see it implemented in actual gameplay. Natal and Sony's motion controls sound great on paper and in theory, but people need to chill the ***** out until they actually see something more than a poorly put together tech demo or a fancy video demo with lame actors.
On a side note, both Microsoft and Sony had some good game announcements. I was really surprised to hear about FF14, excited about the PSP Go and I'm really looking forward to both Mass Effect 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic. -
