Wait, this is Digg, wtf am I talking about... Its a first post...
Anyways, I'm thrilled. Its great to see a powerful, expensive product do more than purchased to do. I mean hell, who would complain if Nvidia release a little dongle to make it a TV tuner on any 8000 series card? No one. So stop bitching people, its a nice addition and I personally would buy one in a heartbeat if it came out in the US.
Why must everyone just go "PS3 you say? Now I must troll!" Chill folks, its a cool piece of tech and it happens to work with the PS3 instead of a computer. - Mejogid, on 10/10/2007, -5/+25If your beloved 360 has so many 'AAA' titles, why don't you spend more time playing them instead of trolling every single PS3 related article? Is there some aspect of the PS3 that you find personally offensive, or do you just have way too much free time?
- DanGleesacks, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23Delighted its Europe only... for so many years we have always been on the waiting list for the new toys and finally the Americans don't have something we have will endure a long wait!
PS3 / Blu-Ray all the way! - kazamx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17As the PS3 can run a full Linux distro without the need for any hacks, we could be on for a winner here. I use an Xbox Media Center, and I love it. The problem is its getting a little dated now. I see the PS3 as the natural replacement for my old trusted Xbox.
Blu-Ray
HD out
TV tuner (full DVR based on Tivo software)
Full access to networked video/audio files
Full Linux operating system (opens up almost limitless possibilities)
oh and I hear it can play games too
The software isn't mature yet. LinuxMCE is getting there but is very clunky. But I remember the early days of XBMC and how it was really crap, and it has grown into an amazing piece of software. - ccxftw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14That's why you install something like a 250GB. People should stop looking for ways to bash the PS3, its not half has bad as most people want it to be.
- nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11by hanging do you mean "stuff it behind your PS3 somewhere out of sight"?
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I agree actually. I like it when companies release new little niceties to something they have already made. Shows a real devotion to a product. I am no fan of sony and i have not been one ever since they killed my dear sweat dreamcast, but I still appreciate first party support like this.
Although it isn't just a small dongle and it is probably going to cost damn near half the console if not more. - staticneuron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7To me it looks like they are pushing all of this at the same time. You do know they announced a couple of new titles at the same conference right?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7In the games industry, Europe includes Australia and New Zealand as they use similar technology standards.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Just as a POI - the DVR will only be in high definition in countries where HDTV is broadcast over DVB-T. This excludes the UK where the content will merely be SD widescreen (1024x576i).
- dobbinmon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6don't you just love the digg comment system :/
- MWeather, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Just let them pretend that the 360 had a huge catalog of AAA games immediately after launch. It's fun to watch.
- iluvatar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7A PS3 bit his sister once. No really!
- PremiumBitter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5At least you can put your own HDD in and not have to pay for Microsoft's overpriced proprietary *****!
- Ramble, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4probably because DVB-T is widely used throughout the world and only a few backward places don't bother (America).
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It doesn't get HD content in the UK until a broadcaster starts sending out HDTV signals over Freeview. Not until about 2011 after switchover.
- Ramble, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Actually HD is available off FreesatFromSky and Freesat later on. All you need is a DVB-S2 card and you can record HD TV. You can also get it off the Astra sats (Sky uses them).
Small HD trials are in London and other places using traditional DVB-T technology. - vawksel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Leave your phone number and someone will call you to explain.
While you are at it, go ahead and leave your home address too. - kalsey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I'm surprised it was decided to go through since the consumer base in Europe is usually 2nd priority turf. Most stuff comes out ridiculously later here, and at a higher cost. Just look at the 360 Elite - months later and with a £330 price tag (thats about $660).
That said, I'm happy about this. I was going to buy a Freeview (thats what its called in the UK) box recorder to record shows while I'm out, but this is the decider. Good going Sony. - dheaddy, on 10/10/2007, -12/+14Sony appeared to have prioritised the PS3's features like this:
1) It's a Blu-ray player
2) It's a PC (and installing Linux on it is easy)
3) It's a Media Center
4) It's now a HD-PVR (with additional hardware)
5) It's a next-gen gaming machine
People complaining about the lack of AAA games should take heart that it's not because the PS3 sucks, far from it, it's just not on the top of Sony's 'To-do' list. - dadioflex, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2General Motors core competency hasn't been automobile production for at least 7 years.
- Zoids, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2iPhone isn't even 3G. I'll stick with my phone.
- dadioflex, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Brilliant! I'll order one immediately for my Virgin Media UK cable service.... I assume I just have to leave the box near my cable connection for the MAGIC to work...
- vawksel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Get some smarter friends.
- Rovient, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2This, my man, is a perfect comment. I find it so weird that people spend so much time trolling on here rather than play the games they 'love'!
- encrypter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2We got the iPhone, you guys get this.
- randomizer9, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Score one for Europe, I think its a cool idea.
- DaleoftheUK, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm just a little confused. Does this get digital HD tv, or does it require another device to get the HD content to the TV in the first place. Here in the UK the only way to get high def is cable or Sky HD which both already feature the HD recording feature.
Don't get me wrong this seems a great idea, just confused as to why you'd need it if your HD box already can record. - blatantninja, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If they could make it work in the US with Dish Network, I'd buy a PS3, PlayTV and if it only worked on PSP, one of those too!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Freeview = Branding for DVB-T. Freesat = a completely different service which is incompatible with this new device.
- smacksaw, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4The article I submitted on this brought up an interesting point that Hollywood/MPAA are pressuring Sony not to do this product in the US. I think Sony is conflicted because they do own a movie studio - not to mention lots of record labels. If you want to know where Sony lost it's way, it's the fact that hardware is not #1 with them. It's like General Motors being a home lender now...you can't lose your focus on your core competency.
- Gunegune, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If the DVB-T version sells well enough, they'll likely release an ATSC version. I don't know if that applies to the UK, but it at least applies to America.
- boxninja, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, only they provide a working DVR.
- Error601, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2That wouldn't help me much since almost all the HD channels come from the cable box. They also provide an HD DVR .
- dadioflex, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1A twin-tuner HD-based freeview(DVB-T) PVR will cost you about 80 quid and won't mess with your gaming. No, you won't have an easy time downloading it to your PSP but if you want to you can, or to your GP2X or your PALM OS pda or your OLPC, if you have one. Ring-fencing an open medium (like FTA DVB-T transmissions) with some caustic Sony crap is not the digital future, it's the digital dungeon.
- piper999, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Lucky for you the Americans don't display the same bitterness towards Europe as you do to the US. DVRs have been widely used in the US for years so this device is hardly groundbreaking news here.
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Mind you, PS3 bites can be pretty nasty.
- vawksel, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1"oh I hear it can play games too".
No, not really, you must of heard wrong. - markwilcox, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3"only going to be available in europe", huh? why did Sony New Zealand announce this weeks ago?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1For ***** sake sony market these things. swear to god sony has the the most retarded marketing team in the world. There so many great little things sony products have but sony just ***** fail to communicate that. Hell i still have friends that think the PSP lacks Video support and dont even know about the web browser.
- HolyChimp, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2360 Elite has dropped to £300 before it even released.
- gweedo767, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1This is a comment on all stand alone PVR's (TiVo included): I simply don't get why people use them. While some cable co's have horrible PVR's, Dish Network has an amazing one with a 500GB HD in it and it won't freaking cost you anything with HD service.
- dobbinmon, on 10/10/2007, -7/+3I can't wait to play this... oh wait
- 4815162342, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2OLD NEWS
- natefisher, on 10/10/2007, -8/+2I agree. Sony is pushing some great hardware. The only problem they forgot about the games.
- misfit410, on 10/10/2007, -9/+2Wow, bet you can fit a whole 5-8 movies in HD on that massive 60 gig Hard drive.
- DeepFreezed, on 10/10/2007, -10/+2you guys have no good news for PS3 so you keep bringing this up? how lame. shows how much trouble they are in.
- chubbybubba, on 10/10/2007, -9/+1Who cares about tv. I want an app to download vidcasts to my ps3. I want to see diggnation in hd. Actually forget that, i'd rather see Natali Del Conte or Morgan Webb... oh ya.
- dobbinmon, on 10/10/2007, -11/+1I can't wait to play this... oh wait
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/10/2007, -19/+3The catch is? Probably going to cost a pretty penny.
