- Sandurz, on 01/27/2008, -3/+77You do realize that PS3 games come on Blu-Ray discs..?
That's like taking the wings off of an airplane to cut costs. - Dgen_X, on 01/27/2008, -23/+79'Since the new Blu-ray unit is able to handle disks with organic dye in the recording layers which in turn can be churned out from existing DVD production lines...'
But what does this mean to current blu-ray player owners? Will these discs pressed with current DVD equipment work on blu-ray players without this new laser unit? - MasterThief117, on 01/27/2008, -1/+50I will be looking forward to a price cut. It is a reasonable price now, but if they cut it once more, I will definitely buy it.
- dansmeek, on 01/27/2008, -22/+59i think it means that production factories that are used to make DVD discs can now be used to make Blu Ray discs. Resulting in an exponential lower cost to produce
- SlvrEagle23, on 01/27/2008, -5/+42Of course that's what it means...the original question posed was whether the new manufacturing process creates discs that are unreadable by Blu-Ray players equipped with previous-model lasers that can't handle organic dye in the recording layers.
This digging pattern is almost surreal, why the hell are you people burying the original question? It's completely valid. - Ajajadude, on 01/27/2008, -2/+36Eh, wings on an airplane are SO overrated.
- n0t0kayipr0mis3, on 01/27/2008, -5/+37I was unaware. Sorry for the ignorant comment :D
- WhereAmI, on 01/27/2008, -2/+28I'm going to hold this to you if it comes. I will be there, every comment: Did you get a PS3 MasterThief117?
- inactive, on 01/27/2008, -1/+22So you mean Blu-Ray was hidden in the PS3, and then it came out at night and slaughtered all the people that brought the PS3 into their homes? Scary stuff.
- inactive, on 01/27/2008, -2/+22iT coUlD havE beEn woRsE.
- inactive, on 01/27/2008, -2/+22I don't Understand why random Letters in your post Are capitalized.
- potisreallygood, on 01/27/2008, -7/+26never before have I seen a comment that makes so much sense.
- triplehelix, on 01/27/2008, -5/+24the ps3 is their bread and butter? you do realize sony is a massive international conglomerate with an extensive and diverse business structure, from electronics, to music and movies right?
the ps3 isn't even the bread and butter of its consumer electronics division. i'll agree that the ps3 is an important part of their business plan, but no where near bread and butter status.
oh, and i'll bet you 2 to 1, that we see the ps3 at $299 by xmas 08. lot of rumors floating that it'll happen sooner. - TangentThought, on 01/27/2008, -2/+20Just as many SKUs as the xbox360. But don't worry, you won't have to go through as many to get a working system.
- SemiSarcastic, on 01/27/2008, -12/+30Being a PS3 owner myself all I can say is that I just wanna play games, and no the Xbox360 doesn't seem to tailer to my tastes right now (With the exception of Mass Effect).
- mos6507, on 01/27/2008, -2/+19The rest of the computer industry doesn't necessarily follow Steve's pricing rules, thankfully.
- theaceoffire, on 01/28/2008, -2/+18All PS3's can play all PS3 games, and each game can use a hard drive, blue-ray, and internet access. Can't say that for the 360.
- Deodrus, on 01/27/2008, -1/+17retard.
- inactive, on 01/27/2008, -1/+16Hey...guess what your intangibles are stored on...You guessed it....it's a tangible!
- inactive, on 01/27/2008, -0/+15Blu-Rays use PCM Uncompressed sound, anyone who wants to sit and wait for a 30 GB file go ahead but, I could never possibly enjoy an HD movie that is downloaded, PCM Uncompressed sound is a huge file!
- SlvrEagle23, on 01/27/2008, -6/+19When I read the article, I picked up the same thing...that the new lasers can handle discs with organic dye, enabling a different manufacturing process, but that this improvement doesn't retroactively apply to old Blu-Ray drives.
I haven't the slightest clue as to why the obvious statement above is being dugg so heavily and the original question buried so much, but I'm sure I'm going to get a reply ending with "dumbass." for bringing that up.
Is it the case that the newer, cheaper-to-manufacture Blu-Ray discs will be unreadable in older drives? - TangentThought, on 01/28/2008, -0/+13Except that it would surprise you because they all are on Blu-Ray. The PS2 did have some CD-ROM games on them, but were labeled appropriately with the "CD-ROM" logo on the box. None of the PS3 games have the "DVD-ROM" logo on them.
- inactive, on 01/28/2008, -2/+14Don't forget free on-line multiplayer
- mywhitenoise, on 01/28/2008, -0/+11Do you even own a PS3 you moron? There isn't ONE game that is on DVD-ROM, not one!
- theojanke, on 01/27/2008, -0/+11That's 1 centimeter.
- Dgen_X, on 01/28/2008, -4/+15fud?
it was a damn question, if I would have said "omg there's sony screwing over early adopters" it could be considered f.u.d., but I asked the question hoping someone would be able to answer it.
so eat a dick ok? - Managua8Green, on 01/28/2008, -2/+12wow, its very respectable for you to own up to your own faults.
I applaud you sir, cheers. - deadbaby, on 01/27/2008, -0/+10I don't think the size is the issue. It's the fact they can start using generic DVD production lines for production as the article states.
- triplehelix, on 01/28/2008, -0/+8i agree that one (but not the only) reason blu-ray "won" was because of the ps3 having a blu drive installed, but i can't agree with it being a trojan horse. if there was no benefit to the ps3 as a gaming machine, then you might have a point, but as the installed CD drive in the ps1, and the DVD drive in the ps2 have shown us, while the excess space might not immediately be taken fully advantage of, it doesn't take long before it becomes a desirable bonus to the devs, and not incredibly far behind that, where they even become constrained by that no longer "new" additional space.
unless microsoft is planning to roll out the xbox411 sooner then later, i believe devs for the machine are going to be increasingly constrained by the DVD capacity. - Ajajadude, on 01/27/2008, -1/+9I still have to backup my "intangibles" onto a disc or disc drive. One little error and I could lose it all.
- HappyScrappy, on 01/28/2008, -0/+7I read about this elsewhere. The key here is RECORDING layers.
It's for BD-R and BD-RE (RW) discs.
http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/09/18/pioneer-mitsu ...
BD-R discs that don't use these new layers will still exist, they just will cost a bit more. If you only need your recorded discs to read in the new-type drives you can use the new LTH discs (assuming your recorder can record them).
The new dyes don't affect pressed discs, only recordable ones. - theaceoffire, on 01/28/2008, -2/+9So we can expect you to join in 4-6 years?
- aneusomy, on 01/28/2008, -0/+7I really don't see the PS3 HDD as a factor to consider when buying the PS3, given that Sony provides instructions on how to swap it out and put in a new one yourself... You can easily swap in a 500gig drive, rather than sell the whole unit and lose money buying a new PS3. This, IMHO, is part of the reason why the PS3 is better than the 360. (BTW, I have 3 consoles-- Wii, PS3, and the 360-- so I think this is a fair thing to say).
- branjb, on 01/27/2008, -2/+9F-16/F-22 are just lawn darts anyway.
- WhereAmI, on 01/27/2008, -3/+10They don't have a monopoly yet, HD-DVD is still around. Even then, they have to make it cheap so people start buying it instead of DVDs. And then there is downloadable content around the corner (Apple TV 2)
Does DVD have a monopoly and charge out the ass? - triplehelix, on 01/28/2008, -2/+8i was impressed with the rational response there, then i got to that whole dick eating thing...
- xBBx, on 01/27/2008, -3/+8My bad. I should have chosen my words more carefully. You're right, PS3 isn't their "bread & butter", but it is an important part. I mean, one of the reasons why Blu-Ray did so well was because the PS3 was a trojan horse in a way to get a blu-ray disc player in people's living rooms.
- HappyScrappy, on 01/28/2008, -0/+5http://wesleytech.com/blu-ray-vs-hd-dvd-replicatio ...
Why not read for yourself instead of just digging me down ignorantly? - TiMMY8765, on 01/28/2008, -2/+7check out uncharted, its pretty good
- Ajajadude, on 01/28/2008, -2/+7Oh, calling anyone who uses the built-in browser a tool is a "fact"? Way to be retarded.
- Managua8Green, on 01/28/2008, -0/+5You wasted my time fool.
- tzon, on 01/28/2008, -0/+5Acutally, SEGA4life capitalized 2 letters incorrectly, not 1 as you incorrectly stated. But does it Really Matter?
- triplehelix, on 01/28/2008, -0/+4as fantastic said, its about the internet functions and PIP commentary. far far far from ending up useless, unless your talking about what the 1.0 profile players can't do, in which case i agree about it being useless.
- cigawoot, on 01/27/2008, -1/+5once internal PC blue-ray drives drop down below 100 bucks i may consider one.....
- kolop1, on 01/27/2008, -1/+5I'm happy.
- FriedTurkey, on 01/28/2008, -3/+7The Macbook Air is more expensive because it is made my Apple. Fanboys will buy it no matter what the price. $200 iPhone cuts?
- Philbert, on 01/28/2008, -0/+4I got an 80GB for $350 :p But really, don't sell yours to get a bigger drive, like anuesomy said, just install a bigger drive, it would probably cost less anyway. The instructions are in your PS3 manual. Also if you have wi-fi you need to copy movies over. My Windows Media Player and Azureus both show up on my XMB allowing me to stream any media I have on my computer.
- YojimboJango, on 01/28/2008, -0/+4The cost for materials goes down. There for it costs less. It's a lot like die fab reductions. A 90mm chip requires more silicon than a 45mm.
- fantasticFlan, on 01/28/2008, -1/+5I'm not sure of the specific article you're talking about, but from what you're saying, it was probably referring to new special features, not physical changes to the discs.
- bgfinkel, on 01/28/2008, -3/+6does this mean that the ps3 will be smaller? that would be nice because currently its a bit of a fatty
