Sony:No plan to cut PlayStation 3 price
news.yahoo.com — - Sony has no plan to cut the price of its PlayStation 3 game console, the company's chief financial officer Nobuyuki Oneda said Friday."This year, our strategy is not to sell more quantity for PS3 but to concentrate on profitability," Oneda told a forum in Singapore. "Our plan is not to reduce the price."

I just bought an Xbox 360 Elite and guess whats missing from it? WiFi adapter!!
That's about $60+ extra.- truspector, on 07/11/2008, -2/+21It's actually $100, but you can pick up a good wireless bridge for $20 - $30 or get a third party one for $40.
- scooterbaga, on 07/11/2008, -2/+6I here the wifi adapter for the original xbox also works on the 360. Those are relatively cheap these days too.
- spoiled1, on 07/13/2008, -0/+3Froogle showed the cheapest as $60. Hence the "+" sign after the price.
- Kbriggs, on 07/11/2008, -10/+13SUCKER!
- dsmx, on 07/12/2008, -8/+22They should of called it the not-so-elite.
- p3dr4m, on 07/13/2008, -0/+3HAVE
- Schmich, on 07/12/2008, -1/+2Imo they should lower it slightly just so those that for some reason want to wait get some benefit out of it. Atm the article is saying "hey all you guys who are waiting to buy a PS3, you might as well just buy it now". But then again it's may be quite good for the consumer that they announce this so that people actually don't end up waiting for nothing.
- ATLien74, on 07/12/2008, -10/+4Have fun with your red rings of death and faulty disc errors.
- Bozmanbeyond, on 07/12/2008, -4/+4Thats old news buddy, try somthing new.
- illustrick, on 07/12/2008, -4/+3and our 3 year warranty.....and our huge list of exclusives.... while you sit there playing metal gear, and metal gear, oh and i almost forgot metal gear.
- theaceoffire, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3Not to stir the nest, but...
What was the most recent 360 exclusive? - Bozmanbeyond, on 07/12/2008, -1/+2Ninja Gaiden II June 3rd
- ATLien74, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2Who cares about exclusives when I wouldn't buy them anyways? Halo 3 was weak, a typical average shooter except for the demo recording. I beat Gears of War in one day. What else is there? Everything I would want to play is on the PS3....oh and it works...exclusives don't do you much good if you can't play them because your 360 is piece of ***** that doesn't work.
As far as your 3 year warranty goes, what good is it if your 360 is in the shop half of the year? You still aint gonna be playing it. They don't really fix them obviously because I had to send mine back 3 times and on the fourth time I said ***** it! My 8 year old PS2 still works and has NEVER been in the shop.
- Flytrap, on 07/12/2008, -0/+8Jeez... whay would that be so expensive? Isn't wi-fi standard on the Wii... and Nintendo still finds a way to turn a profit on every console sold
- illustrick, on 07/12/2008, -6/+3that is because they are using a game cube with a faster FSB and faster ram......while the technology that is in the current gen consoles was state of the art when they launched.
- Shaflugi, on 07/14/2008, -0/+4There is NO REASON WiFi should cost 100 bucks. You can get laptop WiFi cards for about 50.
- zapass, on 07/12/2008, -8/+3the 360 lineup is a joke, elite RRODs are just as red, all 'options' like HDD and wifi make it more expensive than ps3, bluray's taken off, online is free, sony exclusive titles are delivering and even 3rd party software is now superior.
no really, you have to be the dumbest ass in the universe to buy a 360 at this point.
you are what you buy.- Elranzer, on 07/13/2008, -2/+4The 360 has one trump card though... actually good games.
- Elranzer, on 07/13/2008, -2/+3You can get a used adapter for $50-$60. It's not like it's gonna have any disc scratches on it.
- Dracusis, on 07/14/2008, -1/+4You can get a used PS3 for $50-60 less then the 360 Elite. It's not like it's going to have any disc scratches on it.
- expert01, on 07/13/2008, -3/+7You know what else doesn't usually come with wireless adapters? Desktop computers. You know why? Because they don't move very much.
- philhatesyou, on 07/13/2008, -0/+5Yes, but they also don't sit near the TV. Maybe you've got a Cat5 drop by your entertainment center, but 90% of homes don't.
- Dracusis, on 07/14/2008, -0/+7But unlike Desktop computers which are designed to be upgradeable and expandable, consoles are supposed to come with everything you need "in the box", or at least they should.
Sony got it right putting a HD optical drive, Wifi and a HDD in every SKU as standard, Microsoft went for the cheapest nastiest solutions possible and 360 gamers have been suffering ever since. Sucks really, because the 360 is a good machine, if only it had the polish (hardwise wise) that the PS3 had, it's be killer.
- HumanRecalled, on 07/13/2008, -1/+2than you should buy your wifi adapter at Walmart and or Zellers those stupid teens they hire don't know th edifference ! You know that wireless connector for th eWireless controller to your PC thats 25 bucks ?
Well slide those out and in place slide the wifi adapter in it's place ! They both say WiFi adapter so when you take it up and it comes up 89.99 or whatver simply say hey no it isn't and take they clerk to where you got it - if there is any hassle ask for a manager they will be happy to apise and give it to you for said price WHY ? Cause they have to especially if there is about 10 things in the wrong spot ( ones you put there yourself ! )
So yes it does work i have doen it about 12 different times at Zellers and walmert :) ***** em ! So there you have it wifi hook up for 25 dollars !
Aslo you don't even need the wifi hook up ! you can use you PC or laptops wifi adapter as a link just google it !
Works the same way !! And everybody and ther dog hgas a wireless router if not get one for 25 bucks as well
or as i stated if you have a lap top use that as a dedicated wireless link !!- expert01, on 07/13/2008, -1/+1"Cause they have to"
No they don't. In order for them to be required to honor that price, the description on the price tag must match the item. - HumanRecalled, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1well mr.expert01 your wrong cause the description is a mere play on of words used by different stores to recognize there stock sure "we know" it's a wifi device for abox360 but both items are called this...that's where Skus determine the price and actual item name ! S regardless th eitme rings in when scanned th ecorrect number.
Argument should follow me as a customer does not know the difference -if the items were place the wrong place that's not my problem ! I seen it as 25 and i want it at 25 or i shop somewhere else
listen i gave you an out now take it ! It works and it's proven especially to places like Walmart and Zellers - Elranzer, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2WTF is Zellers?
- HumanRecalled, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1@Elranzer
Canadian version of the U.S Walmart - bigbadgoat, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1No we have wal-mart in Canada
- HumanRecalled, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1bigbadgoat you idiot you know WTF i meant !! At the time say 20yrs ago Zellers in Canada was the equivalent of the U.S Walmart !! Walmart has sense came to Canada but that doesn't change what i was trying to convey ! Ass ***** ! As a fellow Canadian i'm shocked your that dumb not to understand what i was trying to explin to a fellow United Statesman as he obliviously didn't know or ever heard of Zellers !!
I guess your one of those retared central Canadians we Easterners hear so much about !!
Here let me school you dummy !
Wal-Mart Canada is the Canadian unit of Wal-Mart and was founded in 1994 in Mississauga, Ontario with the purchase of the Canadian Woolco stores

Canadian Tire, Hart Stores, Giant Tiger, and Real Canadian Superstore, Costco, and increasingly grocery stores such as Loblaw and Sobeys-Thrifty Foods, Safeway, Save-On-Foods, Country Grocer, Fairway Markets, others.
Beginning in the fall of 2006, Wal-Mart opened new Supercentres in select Canadian cities with 14 new stores by the end of 2007. Wal-Mart locations already carry limited grocery items in Canada.
The company was founded in 1931 by Walter P. Zeller as "stores for thrifty Canadians
Zellers Inc. is Canada's second-largest chain of mass merchandise department stores, with 282 locations in communities across Canada.[1] Zellers is headquartered in the Toronto suburb of Brampton, Ontario, and is a subsidiary of Hudson's Bay Company ("Hbc").
In recent years, Zellers has been moving slowly away from the discount department store model, and has introduced better quality merchandise and different customer service concepts. New and remodelled Zellers stores are often compared to that of Target Corporation in the United States.

- grat2001, on 07/11/2008, -27/+17With the great line up of games they have coming the second half of the year, it would make no since to cut the price. If the 360 had something out to go up against MGS4 then they might not have planned to cut the price. With the Sony IP war chest starting to bear fruit, they can hold off with the cut.
- AwesomeMonster, on 07/11/2008, -23/+13MGS4 is not the second coming of christ. There are plenty of 360 exclusives that already match up. Give it a ***** rest already.
Though I may be a little biased based on my console of choice, I am not talking out of my ass. I borrowed my friends ps3, bought mgs4, and was dissapointed. It's a good game, but I wanted to play more of it. Even if there aren't exactly 90 minute cutscenes, plenty of them felt that long and they're so abundant during the game that I barely get to play what I came for. That, and I have gripes about the whole manner it took place, in episodic levels rather than a pseudo free roaming environment of the past. Lastly, i thought the games pacing was a little too low. Gone is the fast paced stealth action of mgs and mgs2 and in with the camo crawling of mgs3. I just don't feel like the suites the series as well. I tried my best to enjoy this game and I felt as if it did not live up to its pedigree (Then again, I wasn't able to get MGO to work so that might be my problem). Just my two cents.- specialK16, on 07/12/2008, -4/+13To you it might not, but seriously, MGS is the coming of Christ for some people, and yes, it will weight in the sales of the PS3.
- grat2001, on 07/12/2008, -3/+13Well you wouldn't do well in business...Sony will wait to see how much buzz they generate at E3 before they decide if a price cut is needed. Then if it is needed it will come during the holiday.
- mattlohkamp, on 07/12/2008, -5/+1I'm with specialK16, MGS4 is the second coming of christ moreso even then the first coming of christ.
- Cockslap, on 07/13/2008, -3/+1***** you MGS fanwhores. ITS OVERRATED, get over it. Its in the same boat as GTA4, OVERRATED.

- drqshadow, on 07/12/2008, -7/+9Too Human, Ninja Gaiden 2 and Gears of War 2 are a set of fairly major 360 exclusives that are dropping within a month or two of MGS4's launch. The Xbox has also moved in with notable exclusives in genres that were typically dominated by Sony last generation. JRPGs? The next chapters in the Star Ocean and Tales lines are Xbox 360 exclusive, and you won't find Lost Odyssey anywhere else. Non-Linear RPGs? Mass Effect is 360 and PC exclusive, and Fable II is on the way. Fighting? Guilty Gear 2 won't be on PS3 this fall. Music? Bemani hasn't released DDR for the PS3, while the 360 has already got three.
PS3 fanboys are so quick to make noise when they get an exclusive, when in actuality the Xbox has been trumping them in that department since its release.- Gamoc, on 07/12/2008, -2/+5Most of those are available on the PC, making them NOT exclusive. PS3 still has Final Fantasy 2million or whatever it is now, plus there's another JRPG that's exclusive to PS3, though I can't remember what it is right now (I'm not interested in JRPGs). None of the 360's exclusives are in anyway similar to MGS4, so it has nothing going up against it. Ninja Gaiden has mediocre reviews and Gears of War was almost as overrated as Halo 3. Lost Odyssey looks mildy attractive, but only because of how much I've heard about it, though I don't like JRPGs that much.
Oh, and DDR? REALLY? - Elranzer, on 07/13/2008, -1/+3If by "most" you mean "just Mass Effect" then yeah.

- CollapseControl, on 07/11/2008, -9/+36I wonder what the price of the PS3 will be during Holiday '09.
As much as I would like to have a PS3 this summer, there is just no reason for me to get it when there are no exclusive games i'm dying to play. No need to have the PS3 sitting around collecting dust like the PS2 did.- beepsy, on 07/11/2008, -3/+21Metal Gear is the first game that has me considering the purchase of a PS3, A few more check marks in the sony column and I might shell out for one.
So I'm in pretty much the same boat, wait and see and hope eventually I have incentive enough to buy one.- CollapseControl, on 07/11/2008, -7/+10Although I won't say that Metal Gear is a bad game, it just isn't one of those game titles I ever enjoyed. I played everyone since the NES days and I just didn't like them. So, if that is the highest marked exclusive game on the PS3, there is no need for me to worry about it.
But more importanlty, for me, is the fact that none of my gaming friends have a PS3. I will only play online games with friends and if they are all on the 360 then i'll be a very lonely gamer on the PS3.
Time will tell.... - scooterbaga, on 07/11/2008, -8/+6MGS is the first game that made me REALLY want a PS3 as well. Now they just need about 5 more like that, and I might buy one.
Useful tip for anyone mulling over buying something expensive. Make sure there are more than five things about it you ABSOLUTELY must have. I didn't get an xbox until late last year, because Portal was the 7th must have thing. Saved myself a lot of money due to price drops and buying older games, etc. It's always better to wait... Otherwise you're just buying it for no good reason.
...But make sure to buy those fancy limited edition items right off. Anything you know will appreciate in value... Learned that the hard way with the Limited Bioshock... - thecheatah, on 07/12/2008, -3/+1@CollapseControl
I think ur like.0001% of the people that dont like mgs.
Usually people complain about this and that, and then say I loved it. - illustrick, on 07/12/2008, -4/+5***** metal gear, that ***** was uninspiring, and didnt make me want to play it over again, bioshock was better and has a lot of replay time, even with no multiplayer. and the metal gear multiplayer is mediocre at best. dont get me wrong the graphics are nice, but i want a game with substance, i still get enjoyment out of tetris and mario 1/2/3 and they look ***** as ***** on my 42in tv. ***** half life was better than metal gear. and that ***** looks dated as *****.
- CollapseControl, on 07/11/2008, -7/+10Although I won't say that Metal Gear is a bad game, it just isn't one of those game titles I ever enjoyed. - WhereAmI, on 07/12/2008, -8/+13LittleBigPlanet will be great. Killzone 2 is another FPS as far as I'm concerned. Resistance is still a FPS so we'll see how that turns out. inFamous isn't coming out this year :(. FFXIII or FF Versus XIII aren't coming out this year either. The Agency should be coming out by Christmas though.
- theaceoffire, on 07/12/2008, -7/+9Come on man, its Insomniac. They make great games... not to mention Resistance 2 is gonna be something new... 8 player online coop with a separate story, Massive multiplayer with game modes never heard of before, and the rock solid gameplay you expect from the makers of Ratchet and Clank and Spyro.
- Zettabyte, on 07/12/2008, -6/+1You are being trolled.
- WhereAmI, on 07/12/2008, -3/+4@theaceoffire
Separate online story? First I've heard, sounds interesting.
See? We'll see how it plays out. I didn't give a ***** about Nathan Hale at the end of Resistance 1, maybe he'll be more connectible. - theaceoffire, on 07/12/2008, -1/+4@ whereami
Yeah, seperate online coop story... which although it is logical (any map made for 1 player will be too easy with 8), is sorta bitter sweet to me.
Anywho, here is more info on it if your interested:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resistance_2
Key notes of interest:
"the biggest boss is over 300 feet high"
"12 new Chimeran enemies"
"The online multiplayer aspect of the game will support up to 60 players online"
etc.
- tastypastry, on 07/12/2008, -9/+10The PS3 kicks ass though, especially as a Blu-Ray player (assuming you have an HDTV) and as a media center. If you have Nero 8 you can use it to stream your movies on your PC to the PS3 using Nero MediaHome.
- illustrick, on 07/12/2008, -1/+4nero is bloatware and you can do it better with MCE of windows, or vista, with a xbox. or pc with a tv tuner. can it dvr? no.....i'd rather buy a blue ray drive from my pc and stream ***** from that.
- Avaseal, on 07/12/2008, -5/+4Well..Gran Turismo 5 will (hopefully) be out around that time. That game alone would be reason enough for me to buy a PS3 if I didn't already own one. It would be nice if developers spent at least half the time that Polyphony Digital spends on their games. I know in most cases this would not be financially pheasable, but there is so much potential to be unlocked in the PS3
- dragon76, on 07/12/2008, -1/+4I have a Wii and have been thinking about a PS3 but they are crazy expensive and I don't plan on using the Blu-ray feature. I will say that used PS3 games are all around $30 and used Wii games (if you can find any that aren't Petz or Bratz or anything with a terminal Z) are all around $5-$10 less than they are new. I was thinking I could justify the purchase because of the cheaper used games but then I realised that 360 has the same games and is a lot cheaper.
- StriderNemesis, on 07/12/2008, -4/+7You must not be that much of a gamer if your PS2 sat there collecting dust in its days of glory.
- illustrick, on 07/12/2008, -1/+4i had a ps2 and the only person playing it were my roommates with madden, most games on it sucked, minus 10 to 20 that were decent, like soul calibur and god of war, other than that i had more fun playing halo 2 and splinter cell on live.
- CollapseControl, on 07/13/2008, -4/+1That is the worst comment I read here. Just because the PS2 wasn't played by me everyday, or enjoyed as much as the xbox, doesn't mean i'm not a big gamer. Chances are I've been gaming longer than you.
- BoonTobias, on 07/12/2008, -4/+6collecting dust like the ps2 did?
wtf were you smoiking, all those fighting games, action, adventures games, rpgs were all ps2 exclusives, moron- CollapseControl, on 07/13/2008, -3/+1Listen.. moron, I had the PS2 and my favorite game for it was Half-Life, which you should know was a port of a PC game. I bought the PS2 for Timesplitters 1 which was a great game. But as soon as I got the Xbox it took all my attention. And then when I got on XBL, I realized I never used the PS2 at all, it sat there under a table all lonely. And the main draw of the PS2 was RPGs, which I have NO interest in playing.
So, you can take your gay ass comment which holds no merit and shove it up your ass.
Just because you are little nerd who enjoyed his PS2 doesn't mean every other person in the world did. Don't take it to heart, *****.

- skoles, on 07/12/2008, -2/+22Alright, "free unlimited firmware updates"?
If you're gonna be a fanboy, at least pick something unique like the user upgradeable HD or the fact you can load *nix on the thing out of the box.
But every system out has "free unlimited firmware updates".- supermanly, on 07/12/2008, -1/+3I think he just means there will be extensive firmware updates (like the recent 2.40 update) as well as continued support at least until the PS4/next console is out.

- Vash3001, on 07/12/2008, -1/+2you mean $499...
- tictac88, on 07/12/2008, -1/+1I'm kinda glad they don't intend to drop the price, 'cos I've just agreed to buy a PS3 off a mate brand new in the box for £250. That's pretty good in the UK considering most are £300. But I couldn't be bothered to wait anyway. If I was to go for a 360 I would have to choose the Elite which is around £250, yet no blu-ray. I figured the PS3 had a lot of decent features for the price. At the end of the day, all electronic products come down in price, if you wait too long, you end up spotting something slightly better that you want.
- phade2blaq, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0It's good deal for those of us who can afford it ! For most people who have mortgages, car notes, health care insurance, kids etc etc etc, $499 just doesn't grow on trees. The core PS2 gamers probably can't part with $499 and that's one of the things that made the Playstatin brand popular was the price. If you buy a $499 console, an extra controller, headset, kb and another game (assuming you don't like the MGS franchise which I don't) then you could easily spend $600-$700 bucks ! Nothing to sneeze at for cash strapped folks.
Everyone's financial situation and responsibilities are different. Just because some can afford a PS3 doesn't mean the masses can. It's like buying a ferrari ! Not everyone can afford it.
- jessenoob, on 07/11/2008, -8/+39Don't forget free access to the PSN. That was one of the main selling points for me.
- AwesomeMonster, on 07/11/2008, -4/+10That's also because of the numerous price cuts the ps3 has already had. It's kinda hard to make money if you keep slashing your products price. It would make no sense for them to drop prices, especially since right now the ps3 is doing much better than before.
- username9000, on 07/12/2008, -5/+4what numerous price drops? I think you are confusing numerous SKU's with numerous price drops.
- Gamoc, on 07/12/2008, -3/+0Getting a PS3 for less than it used to be is a price drop, regardless of the SKU, genius.
- username9000, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1No, its not Gamoc. That is the point *****. A 40 gig PS3 is not the same as a 60 gig PS3, just because it is cheaper. Its not backwards compatible either. A 80 gig PS3 is not the same as a 60 gig PS3 either, nor a 20 gig. Get it?
- Gamoc, on 08/03/2008, -0/+1Wait, the 40gb plays PS3 games, right? And so does a 60gb?
Wow, it seems the 40gb IS a PS3 after all.
- username9000, on 07/12/2008, -5/+4what numerous price drops? I think you are confusing numerous SKU's with numerous price drops.
- mrsanon, on 07/12/2008, -18/+7They obviously just dont care, they know they have lost. Just get as much cash as they can per console. :)
- chaosblade77, on 07/12/2008, -8/+6I think in a way... your right. Not necessarily because they "lost the console war," but because of the money. There are already worries that Sony won't profit from the PS3 at all, and cutting the price certainly won't help them make anything off of it. At this point, they don't need to try to win the console war, they need to make as much money off of the things as they can and please the shareholders.
In all honestly, I think Sony had it coming primarily because of their pre-release arrogance, with the whole "price doesn't matter, this is playstation" thing. I'm also pretty unhappy with them for "using" gamers in order to win the format war over HDDVD.- Gamoc, on 07/12/2008, -1/+1...I think you're being melodramatic if you say they were 'using' gamers to win over HD-DVD.
They're not lowering the price so they can make money off of it, people seem to forget that it's the entire point of any console - to make money for the makers. It has nothing to do with 'losing' the console war this gen, because they definitely haven't, and will definitely win, since the next Xbox will be announced in a couple of years whereas the PS3 will still be going for another 7/8 years. - chaosblade77, on 07/12/2008, -1/+1Given that when HDDVD went the way of the Betamax upwards of something like 90% of blu-ray players in homes were PS3s, there's no way Sony would have won over HDDVD (at least as soon as they did) without the PS3.
I take it you misread my comment because your explanation, aside from the last part which is slightly incorrect, was basically what I said. (Unless that part was in reply to the original post).
Both the next Xbox and PlayStation will be released around the same time. The PS3 will be supported for about 10 years, but that doesn't mean they will not release another console. PS2 was still supported even after the release of the PS3. PS4 will work the same way with the PS3 still being supported, as long as it's in Sony's best interest.
- Gamoc, on 07/12/2008, -1/+1...I think you're being melodramatic if you say they were 'using' gamers to win over HD-DVD.

- Helicobacter, on 07/12/2008, -3/+9Sony still has to subsidize the hardware heavily.I don't blame them. XDR, Blu Ray drive and the Cell are not cheap.
- fanbanta, on 07/12/2008, -9/+2and the games for the ps3 are not cheap i mean you could buy two games for that price you have to admit it they want too much money for the console and then the games are very expensive come on drop the price.
- eryximachus, on 07/12/2008, -2/+12Games are in fact much cheaper than they were 10-20 years ago when you consider inflation.
Most PS3 games are $56 on newegg. I got Final Fantasy II for $64.99 in 1992. That's almost $100 in today's money, or twice what I've seen anything sell for on the PS3
- eryximachus, on 07/12/2008, -2/+12Games are in fact much cheaper than they were 10-20 years ago when you consider inflation.
- aftern9ne, on 07/12/2008, -17/+12Coincidentally, I have no plan to buy one.

- supersickie, on 07/12/2008, -2/+7It absolutely makes since. Thanks for sharing all of your thoughts with us. Hey, what are your thoughts on pizza? Your opinion - even if it is just coincidental - will be the decisive factor between what I decide to have for lunch this afternoon.
- Bozmanbeyond, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3Well we sure know he's not going to buy a pizza for $499.99

- vinnyvenus, on 07/12/2008, -10/+10I don't Sony is going to win console war so there is no incentive to reduce price. The best they can hope for is overtaking xbox 360 thus finishing in second place.
- supersickie, on 07/12/2008, -5/+5I think you're partially right. Sony is already on a steady pace to overtake 360 by the end of 2009 according to analysts (I usually don't put much stock into what analysts have to say, but they actually have numbers to work with her so I have to assume they can do math at the very least).
As far as the Wii goes, I see it as a console that will very quickly wear out it's welcome. It really shouldn't even be in the same discussion as the 360 or PS3 as it's not truly next-generation technology. Sales-wise, they should list it right beneath the PS2 and XBOX in my personal opinion.- Vash3001, on 07/12/2008, -5/+1yes every month the inch closer to Xbox sales. In 50 years they will catch up.
- BeardDob, on 07/12/2008, -1/+0Since when does most sales equate to best product ?
- illustrick, on 07/12/2008, -2/+1if the sales don't go up they won't catch up to the 360 in the hardware cycle they have, everyone knows by 2011 there will be atleast one new next gen console out and soon enough the ps3 will fade away, i really just want to cut to the chase and put out the ps9 already.
- lessthanron, on 07/13/2008, -0/+3Vash, the PS3 has been outselling the 360 worldwide all year. And they're really beginning to warm up sales in Europe and in Japan. So yeah it's entirely possible that it can happen.
- supermanly, on 07/12/2008, -0/+7I don't see it as a single console war. I think the Wii is out on it's own, tearing it up.
The real ones competing are the PS3 and 360. Personally, I think that the PS3 can overtake the 360 when the Holiday 08 and 09 seasons' games hit.
/has Wii, wants PS3- BoonTobias, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3do what i did, trade it with a fool who wants a wii

- theclaw1, on 07/12/2008, -8/+2This is almost certainly another fire sale...
- theaceoffire, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Yes, because every fire sale tricks people into buying crap by pricing it exactly the same as it was before.
- naiieem, on 07/12/2008, -3/+21Sony's PS2 sold so well cause it was cheap and had great games. Coincidentally it dominated the market. Sony need to do the same thing with the PS3 quick, starting with a price drop.
- Sniper, on 07/12/2008, -2/+7They already had two.
- Vash3001, on 07/12/2008, -1/+5and yet they still cost more then their competition.
- theaceoffire, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1PS1 was cheaper than the PS2, had more games... but the PS2 still did well.
You can cost more and still succeed. - Vash3001, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Yeah but the PS1 and PS2 had a ton of good games and were market leaders when they came out. The PS3 is lacking in both departments. There are no consoles that i can think of that were in last place then somehow pulled ahead and won their respective generation.
- theaceoffire, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1PS1 was cheaper than the PS2, had more games... but the PS2 still did well.
- ZenMojo, on 07/12/2008, -2/+6That's just inaccurate, so people please stop digging him up. The PS2 dominated sales every year DESPITE being the most expensive next-gen system on the shelf with the least amount of processing power and a year's head start.
Microsoft called them "arrogant" and Nintendo protested that the Playstation 2 was selling at a higher price than their systems and they still couldn't move hardware. It was humiliating and the two companies definitely took it personal.
This heavily influenced Nintendo's gameplan to sell much weaker hardware at a huge profit this generation and for Microsoft to be first out of the gate. Both of these were based on how Sony ran business for the PS2.- naiieem, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1But the price did drop rapidly
- whiteyoshi, on 07/12/2008, -6/+13How can they gain a profit if they can't sell PS3s?
- victorc26, on 07/12/2008, -3/+6Game sales in both retail discs and the PSN store.
- natastna2, on 07/12/2008, -10/+3But there needs to be some games people want.
- Gamoc, on 07/12/2008, -2/+1And there are loads out and loads more coming.
- natastna2, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1The only game I want is Metal Gear Solid. Why don't you name me some of these games I want?
- Vash3001, on 07/12/2008, -4/+1he can't cause there are only 10 or so good games to choose from on the PS3.
- ZenMojo, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1@natastna2
He's saving them for himself so they won't be sold out, clearly.
Sony's like Apple. They won't necessarily win, but they'll sell, and if they sell, they don't have to win -- even if people hate them. I doubt Sony obsesses over a five-year plan of system domination just to say that they "won," especially after two generations of winning and still beating the Xbox 360 its first two years with a previous generation system.
- victorc26, on 07/12/2008, -3/+6Game sales in both retail discs and the PSN store.
- beyondinfinity, on 07/12/2008, -10/+21"Our plan is not to reduce the price"...Our plan is to reduce the sales.
- coffeerox, on 07/12/2008, -2/+6nononno you guys are getting the wrong idea. They aren't focusing on moving PS3 units off the shelves, but does that mean PS3 isn't going to move off the shelves? Nope, it means that they are focusing on releasing some games because the real profitability comes from the game revenue. When they focus on releasing games, making current fanbase happy, more people will see that and buy the PS3. Next year its possible they will reduce the price and when that time comes, theres going to be a huge surge of ownership.
- musntSurfatWork, on 07/12/2008, -7/+12I for one, who never owned any playstations before, a devout PC gamer, succumbed to the pressure of owning elite harware, that is the PS3. Coupled with Rockband, Singstar, MGS4, GTA4, Grand Tursimo 5 prologue, and Blu Ray and Divx media playback, it simply called my name, even at $600. + 189 warranty repair (no bill)
- Schreck1, on 07/12/2008, -10/+11500 is a ***** of money for me right now...not getting one until it's under 300 because gas is more important at the present moment
- leffunov, on 07/13/2008, -2/+2Where the ***** do you get 500 from? Get out of here!! the price has been $399 for ages and the cost of the 360 was just as expensive with the HD which everyone I know has.

- ThatGeek, on 07/12/2008, -6/+4i think that they have to cut the price. even though they are already losing money on the console, they need people to have that to buy the games, which is where the real money is. Plus, if they bring the price down, there will be more sales of accessories, and blu ray movies.
- Kas70, on 07/12/2008, -1/+14Got my son one for his HS graduation. He deserved it but it was one painful purchase...

- atbnet, on 07/12/2008, -5/+5Sony has lost $3 billion on the PS3 so far, I don't think they are too eager to lower its price to lose more money.
- whoreable, on 07/12/2008, -11/+12I have no plans to buy a PS3 so it kinda works out.
- Farmer77, on 07/12/2008, -4/+15I would like a price cut just like everyone else here but I can understand from Sony's POV. They lost 3.3 billion dollars since launch and they are still losing money on the PS3. All things considered, the PS3, especially the MSG3 bundle pack, is a good deal. I know this is not what everybody wants to hear, so I'm prepared to get dugged down. But think about it, a company, even a big one--hemorrhaging 3.3 billion. That is crazy.
- phade2blaq, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0They can keep selling those overpriced bravia hdtv's ! Sony shot themselves in the foot by trying to cram technology that's probably 3-5 years away from consumer affordability into the PS3 ! That's their fault ! Most folks don't own an hdtv and most folks still watch regular dvd movies. I hardly watch blu-ray movies on my PS3 because I bought it to play games.
They could have saved the blu ray drive for the next incarnation of the Playstation like they did with the dvd drive. DVD drives were around at the time of the PS1 but they were too expensive to install into a game system thus Sony waited and made it available on the PS2 which was a brilliant move on their part but this time they jumped the gun.

- z9john, on 07/12/2008, -1/+8I may be mistaken, but didn't they say this exact same thing before they announced a price drop at E3 last year?
- dzw120, on 07/12/2008, -3/+1There's probably other reasons why they don't want to cut the price too much. For example, Blu-Ray is the upcoming standard for playing movies at home and the PS3 already is one of the cheapest Blu-Ray players (with gaming features to boot). Seeing as Sony sells consoles at a loss and makes up for it through a cut from every game sold, it would make sense for them to not want to stimulate demand among people who might buy the PS3 and not purchase any games. They've got a fairly strong lineup coming in the next year (LittleBigPlanet, Street FIghter IV, Gran Turismo 5, Resistance 2, etc.) so they probably figure they'll be all right.
- lcmatt, on 07/12/2008, -1/+4PS3 is the cheapest blu-ray player at the moment because the uptake isn't that strong. If you go out and survey x amount of people I'm sure most of them won't have a HDTV.
For the majority of people standard def televisions and cheap DVD prices will keep them happy for quite a while. The 360 Pro at $299 is still more expensive than the 40GB PS3 when you factor in that most people will need the $100 wi-fi adapter and then add $50 to game online for a year.

I had the black brick long enough to find out that while it was an OK piece of hardware the games were really ***** and the best game out was their gears of war rip off game resistance fall of man. And don't get me started on gt5 or whatever# it is up to now or MGS4 being the reasons to own the POS 3 as both of those are just the same old ***** in a different box. And yeah the 360 has similar games that are rehashed crap too so no fanboy ***** here.

- username9000, on 07/12/2008, -3/+2How about you factor in the HDMI cable that does not come with a PS3 $30.00 (lol), or a headset (yeah, its pretty much useless right now), but doesn't come with one.
This $100 for a wireless is retarded. You can find one for much cheaper. hell, you could get a xbox 1 wireless adapter and use it on the xbox 360.
Don't try to compare xbox live to PSN either. One game (warhawk) does not a service make. Neither does an in game XMB, when there are still several things it doesn't let you do. voce communication and streaming soundtracks right there at the top of the list.- ChanM, on 07/12/2008, -3/+3First of all an HDMI cable is 6-10 bucks at most. If you buy it for anymore than that you deserve to get ripped off. A headset? Buy any cheap $10 bluetooth cellphone ear piece and your good to go. Xbox 120 gig HD? Yeah that going to cost you $150-200. Wireless adapter yeah how bout another $90. How bout MS allow me to put in my own laptop drive to use in the console rather than buying their over priced crap.
- username9000, on 07/12/2008, -4/+3@chanM. With the 360 there is NO need to upgrade the HDD. You see, xbox 360 games do not require 4-6 gig installatinos before you can play. I have had a 20 gig from launch and I always have at least 8 gigs free. I have a ton of demos and XBLA games as well. I understand that upgrading say a 40 gig PS3 will become mandatory at some point simply because almost every new game requires a ridiculous install. 360 does not have that problem. I also have a PS3, so I know the differences. I am not just some fanboy spouting nonsense like you.
- sonicjosh, on 07/12/2008, -1/+4@username9000
You could just delete the install, it is separate from save date. If I ever start to run out of space (on my 160 gig hdd) I could just start deleting installs for games I don't play anymore. I could delete my Devil May Cry 4 install and months later, install it again if I want to play through it another time from where I left off. - username9000, on 07/13/2008, -3/+1@sonic. that's fine for someone that upgraded to a 160 gig hdd (extra $80 btw) . What about 40 gig owners. 5 games that require hdd space and you are done. also, when you delete the game data it also deletes the online updates. its a pain in the ass and its horrible planning on sony's part. i've said this before, so i am not going to get all into it, but the bluray drive is the culprit. because there is so much data on a bluray disc and it takes swo long to seek, these installs are required to make the game ***** playable. its a flaw and thats it. the point is you don't ever have to worry about that ***** on the 360.
- Darksoul, on 07/13/2008, -1/+1@username9000
"How about you factor in the HDMI cable that does not come with a PS3 $30.00 (lol), "
How about you factor in the fact that you don't know where the ***** you are shopping at if you need to buy a cable that expensive. Which means ***** because you can use that HDMI cable for other ***** if you need to can you say the same for the xbox 360 ***** nope their cables are can only be used threw them.
"or a headset (yeah, its pretty much useless right now), but doesn't come with one."
Wrong yet again, if you buy warhawk you get one for free and now with socom confrontation coming out Sony is making an official headset which you pretty much get for free. If you don't need it you can buy the game for cheaper without the headset. And seriously blue-tooth headsets are cheaper then hell and that does not put into play people that already have one they use for their cell phone.
"Don't try to compare xbox live to PSN either. One game (warhawk) does not a service make. Neither does an in game XMB, when there are still several things it doesn't let you do. voce communication and streaming soundtracks right there at the top of the list."
First off you sound like a real fan-boy here lets take into account that with PSN you have dedicated servers which gives you alot less lag and more people to play with so yeah it does matter. The sound is better because you are using Blue-tooth head sets which are alot more clearer then the piece of ***** ones microsoft created. And voice communication yeah it does seriously did you pull all your information off a wiki page or what. Streaming sound tracks who ***** cares I have a computer and a cd player for a reason.

There is no need to upgrade you are acting like had microsoft went the same way sony did that people would not want to upgrade. Well good for you but there are alot of people that do need new hard drives for their 360 but because they cost so dam much and you can only buy the ones made by microsoft.
Seriously you sound like a ***** idiot there is no such thing as mandatory you are just making ***** up. Yeah you are right you don't have to worry about those problems on the 360 but you do have to worry about drive and heat problems oh and don't forget the RROD problem. You do the same ***** for a ***** computer if you can't wait 5 min for an install I suggest you get up off your fat ass and go exercise for a bit. - username9000, on 07/13/2008, -1/+1Angry much? That really gave me a chuckle. thanks.
I will go over a couple items here. First, the HDMI cable is $30.00. That is a fact. Yes, of course you can buy a $3.00 cable from monoprice.com, but you can also get a wireless adapter for the 360 for less than $100.00 (you can get a wireless brisge for $40.00) I was comparing apples to apples there. Get it? I didn't think you would.
Oh, well, on to the next thing, PSN is not as good as xbox live. Yes, that is a fact and has nothing to do with fanboyism. I am sorry, but this lag you speak of is non-existent. Xbox live is pretty much lag free, unless you are trying to play using 3G. Dedicated servers are nice, but they make absolutely no difference. i have had the service since its inception and never had any major issues, lag wise. So, it is you that is the fanboy. I was stating facts, you talk about lag. Gay.
on to mandatory installs. Are you saying I can put my mGS4 disc in and play the game without installing data to my hdd??? If you are please tell me how. If you can't that is the definition of mandatory you tool. lol DMC4, Bourne Conspiracy, Hot Shots Golf, the list goes on concerning games with MANDATORY installs. There are no mandatory installs on the 360 (yet). If games start coming out with regularity like they do on the PS3 that require installs before you can play, you can bet it will irk me on the 360 also. Until then I will talk about the positives and negatives of both systems. Other than first party exclusives, there is nothing for me that i can't get that has a better online component than on the 360.
So go cry in your milk and try to convince yourself that the 360 sucks. that is what uninformed sony lovers do.
- Vash3001, on 07/12/2008, -2/+3you don't need the $100 wifi adapter.
- Cockslap, on 07/13/2008, -1/+1No *****, most people here point out the 100 dollar MS adapter just to tack on another 100 bucks and try and make it look more expensive then it is.... for ***** sake you can get a cheap wireless bridge for 40 ***** dollars.
- Vash3001, on 07/13/2008, -1/+1or just run the Ethernet cord that comes free with the 360 to to router.
- illustrick, on 07/12/2008, -1/+110 bluetooth headset!!!?!? are you ***** kidding me, you won't find a decent one under 50 a 10 hdmi cable is a joke and your signal will degrade you want a thick walled cable and they are atleast 30$ and having to install games because of the slow ass BRD. i agree ms rips you off for the hdd, but you know what they have to make money somewhere cause they are barely making any money of it now.
- KobraKommander, on 07/12/2008, -10/+1Warhawk may be lag free but awesome it ain't...I bought that turd when I still had my POS3 and thought it sucked *****. if it weren't for my original xbox ringing out on me after 2 years of service I would have never even thought about buying a POS3 (bought it out of anger towards Microsoft).
- ChanM, on 07/12/2008, -4/+1Keep the price the same , give us faster Blu-ray drive.
- ChinezePanda, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2Thats the most retarded thing I have ever heard.
Slower is a good thign. Less noise for one.
The reason why a DVD drive needs to spin so fast is because the bandwidth of the laser technology is alot .. how do I say this cause im obviously drunk.. "slower?"
Blu-ray can read at a slower rate but the information being passed is an insane amount.
- ChinezePanda, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2Thats the most retarded thing I have ever heard.
- transform100, on 07/12/2008, -2/+1Yeah good more on there part.
- Vash3001, on 07/12/2008, -6/+3Me: No plan to buy one at current price.
- ChinezePanda, on 07/12/2008, -4/+7Good. Doesnt need it.
It already is a trully tremendous deal.
My 360.. With the addon... even though its now discounted... WIFI IS STILL 100 BUCKS!
soooo.....- Cockslap, on 07/13/2008, -2/+0a wireless bridge, 40 bucks.... you spending 100 on microsofts adapter, priceless.
- Bozmanbeyond, on 07/12/2008, -2/+3Hey! There's an Ideal Sony should use to save even more money on the cost of production and sell more units, take out the WiFi go with LAN and instant saving for both us and them. $100 less would do it. They already went with removing the chip for BC and are now software. and did away with some card reader slots too. So shave it down little by little and maybe everyone will forget how great the 60gig version really was.
Okay on the other side of things I own all 3 systems and have had no problems with any other then the PS3's lack of original games that we have all been promised since its launch. If I had know that all I would be using it for is Blue Ray player I would have just bought a ROM drive for $129.99 for my PC. 5 games is just not enough.- phade2blaq, on 07/21/2008, -0/+0Adding the chip for BC wasn't costing Sony much ! Maybe $15-$20 bucks tops. All the other crap they need to remove like the usb ports etc etc etc ! I have those featires on my pc and I also downlaod and watch movies on my PC when the mood strikes me so for me it's like they are moving away from games by adding the movie features.
- jo21, on 07/12/2008, -6/+3the ps3 have outsold the xbox by 1.5 worlwide in 2008.. and growing.
- username9000, on 07/13/2008, -5/+3incorrect.
- philhatesyou, on 07/13/2008, -1/+3The only data I can find on the subject shows that the ratio is more like 1.3 to 1. Close enough to 1.5.
- jo21, on 07/15/2008, -1/+1incorrect are you guys both.
and thanks to japan there is a 400,000+ difference .
plus europe that the ps3 been outselling it the whole year even with the price cut
- username9000, on 07/13/2008, -5/+3incorrect.
- HumanRecalled, on 07/13/2008, -5/+2Sony's PS3 operations as well as the broader game segment to be profitable for the current year ending March 2009
Really how the ***** can you be profitable when your company is millons in the hole forever making new skus and axe other! And rely on 1 gamer a year to sell your system !
Sorry the PS3 i will admit is more powerful but without decent title it's nothing but a blu ray player ! And last i checked DVD is still profiting more than blu rays HD discs!
It's like you parents buyin you a porshe but it has no wheels , shifter or keys or a gas tank !! Sure it's a cool car but WTF do you do with it without these major things ! - drew8872, on 07/13/2008, -3/+1I wont buy one for $500
http://www.grosswholesale.com - Darksoul, on 07/13/2008, -3/+6Seriously to all of you talking smack about the ps3 and how expensive it is how about this GET A ***** JOB. Get out of mommy and daddy's basement take your dick out of your ass and purchase one or don't otherwise don't ***** speak about what you don't know. Simple is it not..........
- username9000, on 07/13/2008, -1/+1man, you are an idiot. you make me laugh fanboy.
- davewelsh79, on 07/13/2008, -1/+3Of course they'll say that. No company in their right mind will pre-announce a price cut. It would stunt sales until the price cut arrives.
- allisonaxe, on 07/13/2008, -1/+2and i still have no plan to buy one. funny how that works, huh?
(love my psp though.) - fanbanta, on 07/15/2008, -0/+0type in fanbanta and look at my super awsome adventures of hunk please
- jmahorney, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1"we have no plans and then this:
Price cut announced
http://kotaku.com/5025521/400-80-gb-ps3-announced" - kicketm, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1i bet you a fiver ps3 price drops again before the year end.
http://ps3.uk.net/#discount-offers-voucher-codes - SLCovington, on 08/03/2008, -0/+0They'd honestly be stupid to reduce the price now that the next-gen DVD war is over and HD lost to the BluRay disc. If anything, that only raises the value of the PS3, considering its a more cost friendly BluRay player since its also a great console. I personally own both a PS3 and an XBox 360, I'm not really biased on either one of them. Both have their ups and downs.
