- Malarie, on 07/11/2008, -24/+78499$ for the 80GB model, MGS4, Dual Shock 3, BluRay Player, Music player, Picture Albums, Google media Server (I am a picasa user), Free unliited firmware updates, WiFi... Say what you want, but I consider this a pretty good deal.
- jessenoob, on 07/11/2008, -8/+39Don't forget free access to the PSN. That was one of the main selling points for me.
- CollapseControl, on 07/11/2008, -9/+36I wonder what the price of the PS3 will be during Holiday '09.
As much as I would like to have a PS3 this summer, there is just no reason for me to get it when there are no exclusive games i'm dying to play. No need to have the PS3 sitting around collecting dust like the PS2 did. - ahoyhoy1, on 07/12/2008, -2/+25You people in the UK pay more because you don't have to deal with Bush. Think of it as a competence tax.
- skoles, on 07/12/2008, -2/+22Alright, "free unlimited firmware updates"?
If you're gonna be a fanboy, at least pick something unique like the user upgradeable HD or the fact you can load *nix on the thing out of the box.
But every system out has "free unlimited firmware updates". - spoiled1, on 07/11/2008, -21/+40Sounds reasonable to me.
I just bought an Xbox 360 Elite and guess whats missing from it? WiFi adapter!!
That's about $60+ extra. - truspector, on 07/11/2008, -2/+21It's actually $100, but you can pick up a good wireless bridge for $20 - $30 or get a third party one for $40.
- naiieem, on 07/12/2008, -3/+21Sony's PS2 sold so well cause it was cheap and had great games. Coincidentally it dominated the market. Sony need to do the same thing with the PS3 quick, starting with a price drop.
- beepsy, on 07/11/2008, -3/+21Metal Gear is the first game that has me considering the purchase of a PS3, A few more check marks in the sony column and I might shell out for one.
So I'm in pretty much the same boat, wait and see and hope eventually I have incentive enough to buy one. - dsmx, on 07/12/2008, -8/+22They should of called it the not-so-elite.
- Kas70, on 07/12/2008, -1/+14Got my son one for his HS graduation. He deserved it but it was one painful purchase...
- Kbriggs, on 07/11/2008, -8/+21and you're...8
- Farmer77, on 07/12/2008, -4/+15I would like a price cut just like everyone else here but I can understand from Sony's POV. They lost 3.3 billion dollars since launch and they are still losing money on the PS3. All things considered, the PS3, especially the MSG3 bundle pack, is a good deal. I know this is not what everybody wants to hear, so I'm prepared to get dugged down. But think about it, a company, even a big one--hemorrhaging 3.3 billion. That is crazy.
- naiieem, on 07/12/2008, -1/+12In the UK a PS3 is £299.99 about $600 for the 40gb version with no extra's.
If i could of got a 80gb PS3 and MGS4 for $499 eg £250, I would of bit your hand off. - beyondinfinity, on 07/12/2008, -10/+21"Our plan is not to reduce the price"...Our plan is to reduce the sales.
- LeviTheSmith, on 07/12/2008, -2/+12Here in Aus we payed $1000 for the launch day console. The 40GB is still over $600 so you stop your complaining.
- eryximachus, on 07/12/2008, -2/+12Games are in fact much cheaper than they were 10-20 years ago when you consider inflation.
Most PS3 games are $56 on newegg. I got Final Fantasy II for $64.99 in 1992. That's almost $100 in today's money, or twice what I've seen anything sell for on the PS3 - grat2001, on 07/12/2008, -3/+13Well you wouldn't do well in business...Sony will wait to see how much buzz they generate at E3 before they decide if a price cut is needed. Then if it is needed it will come during the holiday.
- specialK16, on 07/12/2008, -4/+13To you it might not, but seriously, MGS is the coming of Christ for some people, and yes, it will weight in the sales of the PS3.
- feverjunk, on 07/11/2008, -4/+12duggeddowntodeath
- Flytrap, on 07/12/2008, -0/+8Jeez... whay would that be so expensive? Isn't wi-fi standard on the Wii... and Nintendo still finds a way to turn a profit on every console sold
- theaceoffire, on 07/12/2008, -3/+11free online coop... I am eagerly waiting for some good online coop games to play when its 1 am.
- z9john, on 07/12/2008, -1/+8I may be mistaken, but didn't they say this exact same thing before they announced a price drop at E3 last year?
- whiteyoshi, on 07/12/2008, -6/+13How can they gain a profit if they can't sell PS3s?
- supermanly, on 07/12/2008, -0/+7I don't see it as a single console war. I think the Wii is out on it's own, tearing it up.
The real ones competing are the PS3 and 360. Personally, I think that the PS3 can overtake the 360 when the Holiday 08 and 09 seasons' games hit.
/has Wii, wants PS3 - Dracusis, on 07/14/2008, -0/+7But unlike Desktop computers which are designed to be upgradeable and expandable, consoles are supposed to come with everything you need "in the box", or at least they should.
Sony got it right putting a HD optical drive, Wifi and a HDD in every SKU as standard, Microsoft went for the cheapest nastiest solutions possible and 360 gamers have been suffering ever since. Sucks really, because the 360 is a good machine, if only it had the polish (hardwise wise) that the PS3 had, it's be killer. - Helicobacter, on 07/12/2008, -3/+9Sony still has to subsidize the hardware heavily.I don't blame them. XDR, Blu Ray drive and the Cell are not cheap.
- AwesomeMonster, on 07/11/2008, -4/+10That's also because of the numerous price cuts the ps3 has already had. It's kinda hard to make money if you keep slashing your products price. It would make no sense for them to drop prices, especially since right now the ps3 is doing much better than before.
- WhereAmI, on 07/12/2008, -8/+13LittleBigPlanet will be great. Killzone 2 is another FPS as far as I'm concerned. Resistance is still a FPS so we'll see how that turns out. inFamous isn't coming out this year :(. FFXIII or FF Versus XIII aren't coming out this year either. The Agency should be coming out by Christmas though.
- crispynoodle, on 07/12/2008, -1/+6Even at it's release price it's the cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market and is probably the main factor in HD-DVD pulling out of the market.
- Sniper, on 07/12/2008, -2/+7They already had two.
- philhatesyou, on 07/13/2008, -0/+5Yes, but they also don't sit near the TV. Maybe you've got a Cat5 drop by your entertainment center, but 90% of homes don't.
- supersickie, on 07/12/2008, -2/+7It absolutely makes since. Thanks for sharing all of your thoughts with us. Hey, what are your thoughts on pizza? Your opinion - even if it is just coincidental - will be the decisive factor between what I decide to have for lunch this afternoon.
- musntSurfatWork, on 07/12/2008, -7/+12I for one, who never owned any playstations before, a devout PC gamer, succumbed to the pressure of owning elite harware, that is the PS3. Coupled with Rockband, Singstar, MGS4, GTA4, Grand Tursimo 5 prologue, and Blu Ray and Divx media playback, it simply called my name, even at $600. + 189 warranty repair (no bill)
- Shaflugi, on 07/14/2008, -0/+4There is NO REASON WiFi should cost 100 bucks. You can get laptop WiFi cards for about 50.
- Vash3001, on 07/12/2008, -1/+5and yet they still cost more then their competition.
- scooterbaga, on 07/11/2008, -2/+6I here the wifi adapter for the original xbox also works on the 360. Those are relatively cheap these days too.
- ZenMojo, on 07/12/2008, -2/+6That's just inaccurate, so people please stop digging him up. The PS2 dominated sales every year DESPITE being the most expensive next-gen system on the shelf with the least amount of processing power and a year's head start.
Microsoft called them "arrogant" and Nintendo protested that the Playstation 2 was selling at a higher price than their systems and they still couldn't move hardware. It was humiliating and the two companies definitely took it personal.
This heavily influenced Nintendo's gameplan to sell much weaker hardware at a huge profit this generation and for Microsoft to be first out of the gate. Both of these were based on how Sony ran business for the PS2. - eryximachus, on 07/12/2008, -6/+10If it's just a coincidence, why did you bother sharing your personal plans with us? Did you wipe your ass this morning too?
- rowlodge, on 07/12/2008, -4/+8i have no plans of buying one either till the price does go down ,sorry
- dime, on 07/12/2008, -2/+6Yeah, what's that cover... 2 books in his first semester?
- coffeerox, on 07/12/2008, -2/+6nononno you guys are getting the wrong idea. They aren't focusing on moving PS3 units off the shelves, but does that mean PS3 isn't going to move off the shelves? Nope, it means that they are focusing on releasing some games because the real profitability comes from the game revenue. When they focus on releasing games, making current fanbase happy, more people will see that and buy the PS3. Next year its possible they will reduce the price and when that time comes, theres going to be a huge surge of ownership.
- Sairgem, on 07/12/2008, -1/+5That's usually the point in selling something. You know...to make a profit. Last I knew they're still losing money on every PS3 sold as well. Why should they lower the price while they're still losing money?
Guess what, Microsoft and Nintendo are just in it for the money too. - expert01, on 07/13/2008, -3/+7You know what else doesn't usually come with wireless adapters? Desktop computers. You know why? Because they don't move very much.
- Vash3001, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3lol how well did that thing sell down under?
- theaceoffire, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3Not to stir the nest, but...
What was the most recent 360 exclusive? - illustrick, on 07/12/2008, -1/+4i had a ps2 and the only person playing it were my roommates with madden, most games on it sucked, minus 10 to 20 that were decent, like soul calibur and god of war, other than that i had more fun playing halo 2 and splinter cell on live.
- lcmatt, on 07/12/2008, -1/+4PS3 is the cheapest blu-ray player at the moment because the uptake isn't that strong. If you go out and survey x amount of people I'm sure most of them won't have a HDTV.
For the majority of people standard def televisions and cheap DVD prices will keep them happy for quite a while. Personally I think it will take a few years before blue-ray starts becoming mainstream and in that time the Chinese will be throwing out low cost models. - CollapseControl, on 07/11/2008, -7/+10Although I won't say that Metal Gear is a bad game, it just isn't one of those game titles I ever enjoyed. I played everyone since the NES days and I just didn't like them. So, if that is the highest marked exclusive game on the PS3, there is no need for me to worry about it.
But more importanlty, for me, is the fact that none of my gaming friends have a PS3. I will only play online games with friends and if they are all on the 360 then i'll be a very lonely gamer on the PS3.
Time will tell.... - ChinezePanda, on 07/12/2008, -4/+7Good. Doesnt need it.
It already is a trully tremendous deal.
My 360.. With the addon... even though its now discounted... WIFI IS STILL 100 BUCKS!
soooo..... -
