- zengonzo, on 02/14/2008, -4/+60This would be nice, considering the extensive PS2 library, and the fact that you can actually upgrade your PS3 hard drive reasonably.
But Sony, take note: Do not charge more for the download than the average bargain bin price! - wild, on 02/14/2008, -3/+26MS is charging $15. That seems relatively reasonable for top tier games. But $10 would be the sweet spot.
- wild, on 02/14/2008, -5/+28Because MS rushed us into the next generation. After Halo 2, they didn't have much left in the original Xbox. By shortening the gen window, they forced Sony to come out early.
What your seeing now is Sony hitting its stride and finally at the point I think they would have started this gen. Good times for gamers when you have three quality systems. Two powerhouses that are pushing each other for innovation, and an easy to play casual system that grows the audience for the industry. - ibeetle, on 02/14/2008, -5/+24So lets get this right.
Microsoft removes backward compatibility with the release of the Arcade Edition of the XBox and that is a brilliant move that will only ensure XBox becoming the dominate system.
Sony removes backward compatibility in its entry level Playstation 3 and Sony is doomed to failure.
Nintendo and Microsoft offer a online store through their game systems to buy older games at stupefyingly high prices... some as high as $15.00. And this is seen a pure brilliance on their part only strengthening their install user base.
Sony sells older games through an online store... priced no higher than $10. Many can be downloaded to a PSP and played on the go. This move is seen as a joke and only Sony's sad attempt at copying Nintendo and Microsoft.
Sounds like a typical day on Digg. - chingy1788, on 02/14/2008, -2/+17not exactly feasible in Australia and other countries with Internet download caps
- theaceoffire, on 02/14/2008, -3/+18Still, even if it costs the same, the online might be a better deal... faster loads, and you can download em to 5 ps3's...
- bigbadgoat, on 02/14/2008, -0/+15Sony is on their third generation of game console, and their previous two being the two highest selling consoles of all time. But, according to your apparent "knowledge" of Sony's histories with console are far more llikely to run their latest console into the ground, rather than make moves to have it succeed?
The console maker that wooed away most of Nintendo's major third party titles, that single handedly handed Nintendo and Sega their asses with the PS1, and then followed it up by obliterating Nintendo, Sega, and Microsoft in sales and third-party support. They were probably the biggest factor in running Sega out of the business.
The PS1 and the PS2 both outsold all of their competitors combined, yet you want to believe that they aren't competent enough to make the PS3 a success? You'd have to be nothing short of a ***** moron to think that way. How the ***** can someone as stupid as you even figure out how to breathe on their own? - JigoroKano, on 02/14/2008, -1/+15Some of the earlier PS2 games were on CD, so this would make sense for them.
- mattyice11, on 02/14/2008, -2/+15Sure it would - that's the whole point. The games would just have to be optimized for PS3 hardware rather than just releasing the equivalent of a PS2 rom.
- unusualbob, on 02/14/2008, -0/+10ps3 has quite a decently large HDD standard, but yes the people who want to download a lot of these games should upgrade their HDD to something like a 300GB or more.
Large games could use a maximum of about 8.5GB (max supported by DVD DL). Most didnt use that much though. - bigbadgoat, on 02/14/2008, -1/+10Last time I checked, there are millions of PS3s out there that will still play most, if not all PS2 games. In fact, only 1 out of the 5 different models they have released so far (60 GB PAL does not have the EE) doesn't support PS2 games.
Also, they aren't forcing you to download them, and if you do, they aren't forcing you to be online to play them.
So, please tell me, which PS3 owners they're screwing over? The ones that already have PS2 BC or the ones that bought a console knowing that it couldn't play PS2 titles when they forked over their cash. How the ***** is adding functionality or versatility to a device for free ***** anyone over? - bitterbug, on 02/14/2008, -0/+9What's even cooler is you don't need to transfer your downloaded PSP titles to a stick to play them. Just hop on a wifi access point and connect via PSN to your PS3 at home, and stream the games over the net. Makes me almost want a PSP.
- pikaboy259, on 02/14/2008, -0/+9I get it now....Remove backwards compatibility and then CHARGE for PS3 versions of PS2 game.
Clever. - matt.rubin, on 02/14/2008, -0/+8I wish they had a way to put in your old PS2 game you own then you would be able to download it for free. Because technically I own the rights to the game and i legally own it. SO they would be charging me for something I own.
- theaceoffire, on 02/14/2008, -1/+8If you don't already own it, it would be nice to always have a place you could buy it from.
- zengonzo, on 02/14/2008, -0/+7Now here's a man who can see the proper full scope of the gaming industry beyond one console.
Kudos, chief. - JayD16, on 02/14/2008, -0/+7Thats like saying "the 360 plays DVDs, why have a video store." Its a lot more convenient, especially for rarer games.
- neocr0n, on 02/14/2008, -2/+9You have a choice of a PS3 with backwards compat and one without. If you choose the one without that's your own stupid fault and you have no room what so ever to complain. They give you a choice, I don't see how they are screwing fans here.
- vibrokatana, on 02/14/2008, -7/+13Sound the alarms, the xbots are coming!
- koolaidkitten, on 02/14/2008, -2/+8I'm not feeling this, I rather have built in backwards compatibility at the hardware level.
I highly doubt they will support all my favorite games.
If they released Bushido Blade 2 and Rival Schools and Einhander I MIGHT be happy with this.
Luckily I at least have the software based PS3 - theaceoffire, on 02/14/2008, -4/+10PS3. Less failure, longer lifespan, and cheaper than equivalent 360 hardware.
- typicalusername, on 02/14/2008, -3/+9So long!? Um, excuse me but 1 to 2 years to fully develop content for a console isn't that bad. Go back to your Xbox or Wii threads you hater!
- FecalHurler, on 02/14/2008, -7/+13I don't understand how anyone can be excited about this... Obviously quite a few Sony fan boys running around here. Just so I can understand this correctly, they remove backwards compatability in the new consoles, them essentially re-instate this perk with a charge associated to it. Huh? Bash the 360 all you want, but the original XBOX games on the Live Marketplace can be emulated if you have the original disk. The fact that they're charging people for this is borderline criminal. And no, this isn't like VC. On the Wii you can at least play GC games. Go ahead and bury me *****, but any ratinoal person would agree.
- kingmanic, on 02/14/2008, -0/+6I wonder if my launch 60 gig will increase in value soon?
- soundsofreason, on 02/14/2008, -4/+10They had a horrid start with the PS3, but if they play their cards right on some important issues (like this one), they could start turning the boat around... or ***** things to all hell like they have been for the last couple of years.
- charlescheese, on 02/14/2008, -1/+6I'm sure they would. They were talking about reworking some older titles and improving them recently. I wonder if this fits into that?
- shauncullen, on 02/14/2008, -0/+5i'd be all over this just to be able to play older games on my cheaper, and not backwards compatible, 40 GB version.
- braditude101, on 02/14/2008, -0/+5Guitar Hero 1, 2 and 80's Anyone? I feel like playing them again...without buying an adapter.
- fallenone05, on 02/14/2008, -3/+8Sony has been selling ps1 games for a while now, nintendo is not doing anything new here...dumbass!
- ibeetle, on 02/14/2008, -2/+7Why not charge 1000 PSN Home Points for a 10 year old PS2 game you can buy for $2.00 in a Gamestop bargain bin. Nintendo is making a fortune doing it with the Virtual Console.
Thousands of gamers just recently shed a tear because they could not have the honor of paying Microsoft $15 for Goldeneye. A game they probably played, beat, played again, beat again, threw in the back of the closet for 5 years, and finally traded it in at EB Games for $2.00 cash or $4.50 store credit. - dandonia, on 02/14/2008, -1/+6what are these PSN pointys you speak of?
- trixnfx, on 02/14/2008, -0/+5Get them both if you have the money. That's what I did.
- Spankov, on 02/14/2008, -1/+6Why would anyone be 'pissed' at this? If you don't have a BC PS3 this doesn't affect you. If you already have the games this doesn't affect you. If you do have BC but not the games then you can buy them. What is there for anyone to be annoyed at?
- philipjfry, on 02/14/2008, -0/+5Damn. You beat me to it. Exactly - a PS2 costs less than the XBOX 360 Hard drive. I personally bought a 20G PS3 and a 250G hard drive so I could keep my PS2 games and put away my PS2, but if you bought a 40G with no backwards compatibility and really, really want to play some old PS2 games, buying a new PS2 is still less money than upgrading a 360 arcade (buying a hard drive) to play old XBOX games.
- NiGHTSChao, on 02/14/2008, -2/+6And I know people will say they are coping the Wii
but this isn't even ***** new or original, PC's have always done ***** like this (gametap?) - solidus636, on 02/14/2008, -4/+8OK, so this probably won't work on the 40 gb version, will it?
- inajeep, on 02/14/2008, -1/+5You make one hell of a victim.
- namtellum, on 02/14/2008, -0/+4You pay less for the console because Sony can charge less without any ps2 chips in the ps3. These downloadable ps2 titles will be optimized for the ps3 hardware and will be different than just straight ps2 roms. If you want to play ps2 games so bad buy a 60, 80, or 20 gig, they all play ps2 disks.
- wild, on 02/14/2008, -1/+5Well, it was. I think they phased out all of those units.
Also, its working for the 360. No reason it can't work for Sony. And it would be nice to get a game like Twisted Metal Black again without having to hunt down a copy. - fallenone05, on 02/14/2008, -2/+6what does that even mean?
- dandonia, on 02/14/2008, -1/+5You relise the PS2 had motion control control for some games way before the wii was even thought of. It had a boxing type game and lots of other crappy things just like the wii
- theaceoffire, on 02/14/2008, -1/+5They would have to emulate the physical chip. Just like nes, snes, ps1 emulators emulate their hardware.
- badwithcomputer, on 02/14/2008, -3/+7wouldn't bigger games (like san andreas) take up a substantial percentage of hd space?
- FecalHurler, on 02/14/2008, -0/+4Umm... all the games you mentioned are PS1 games.
- Irfit, on 02/14/2008, -0/+4Because i don't have a PS2.
- postalblowfish7, on 02/14/2008, -0/+3i don't want to fill my HD with massive ps2 games - they should've figured out a way to keep backwards compatibility on board, even if it is just software based.
- dacrowxc, on 02/14/2008, -0/+3I would be more than happy about this if it wasn't for the fact that the psone games they have now for psn have been ***** games(except for Castlevania SOTM). PS2 will be no different.
- smoger, on 02/14/2008, -1/+4Step 1. Remove backwards compatibility for thousands of PS2 games
Step 2. Sell PS2 fans new, digital copies of their PS2 games
Step 3. Profit(someday?) - SkippyDoorknob, on 02/14/2008, -0/+3Because you still have PS2 games that you plays and you don't want to have more stuff piled into your entertainment center.
- NecroSexy, on 02/14/2008, -1/+4Sony isn't copying Nintendo, because the Wii can play Gamecube games.
