- qwertyx, on 10/10/2007, -13/+42This is very smart to do for nex-gen games only on PS3.
- Bricks, on 10/10/2007, -11/+29Sony totally ***** it up at the start and now are making good on their mishap with a somewhat innovative new feature. early adopters everywhere are irked, but such is progress.
- breakspirit, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Sony never said they were getting rid of their console franchise. Lots of companies outsource hardware creation to other companies in order to control their margins. Also, you're a ***** retard.
- aussieNickuss, on 10/10/2007, -6/+20Sony haven't changed the shape of their controller between all the different generations because it is such a good shape. I personally find the PS3 controller way more comfortable to the 360's.
- JayD16, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16I don't really care...I'll get another controller to play MGS4 with but its not like the old controllers are obsolete.
- quomen, on 10/10/2007, -4/+161. I don't understand a thing you just said.
2. Man isn't it too late at night to be hating? Just chill man..
3. Don't put your junk inthe box. - JayD16, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Its not out until spring. If you ask me, the only reason its going to take so long is so they can use xmas to soak up the current PS3s on the shelves.
- Myonosken, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15If it is so "last gen" and below you, why the ***** are they putting it back in again?
Simple, it isn't "last gen" it's not related to any generation, it's just a nice feature. Get off your high horse and shut up. - mooninite, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15Hm....... lawsuit. I'm not even a console fanboy of any type, and I know this. Why? Because it was plastered all over digg when the PS3 came out, not to mention just about the whole internet.
Why can't they package it? Hm......... they have huge shipments with the old controller, and they probably won't be looking at a new package until after the end of this year. None of you understand how a business works. - alx242, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12The ergonomics didn't completely change when they added the sticks.
The boomerang was a prototype and never intended for the release, nobody believed this.
Spin facts however you like it but the basic design for the controllers on the Playstation has not really changed that much and that is what the fans of them like. - spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Check out this week's 1UP Show on Miro to see a nice long first impressions preview of MGS4 including the new Dual Shock. I'm a PC gamer and don't even own a PS3 but I found their remarks really interesting.
- breakspirit, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10yeah I don't really mind having to buy a new controller since I can use 7 at a time and I'll be able to always have something charging. I still very much love my ps3, even if it has had some hard times.
- Dracusis, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11At least they're listening to what people want, that's aways a good sign.
Oh course we're all miffed it wasn't part of the launch, patent lawsuit aside, it's good to know Sony are willing to flex and cater to their users desires.
Now, Div-X support in PS3/PSP and a PS3 price cut (not that I really care, I already bought one) and you'll win a lot more than simple kudos!
p.s. if you reply telling me to install Linux on my PS3 to get Div-X I will punch you in the scrotum, twice. - AntBing, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Once Little Big Planet comes out (about the same time as the Dual Shock 3) I will need at least 4 controllers. Then you gotta think about what happens if the battery goes low on them. If I have 8 I can always have a fresh one to swap out. Is that a good enough plan for you?
- alx242, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10I love the Playstation design of the controller and detest the x360 design...so, no thanks!
- staticneuron, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Not surprised that you do not have your facts straight chris. Nintendo was never sued because their controller used one motor instead of two and MS settled then turn around and purchased a portion of immersion. I am pretty sured there wer MS devs and sony devs that created somewhat unique tech only to be thwarted by a generic copyright that stipulates feedback with two motors.
Only an idiot would try to paint the ambiguous patent holders as good guys. - quomen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7I love the controller shape. And and I prefer over the 360 but my preferences are reserved for my hands. My only concern is that this feature seems a bit gimmicky.
/iownaps3 - AntBing, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Sony never said the rumble feature was innovative. They were in the process of getting sued over the use of it so it was prudent for them to hold off until they knew the outcome of the litigation.
- Dgen_X, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7link to the source... http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3162991
which has already been on the frontpage... - AntBing, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7I only bought two controllers when I got my PS3 knowing that the Dual Shock 3 would eventually be released. I am planning on buying 4-6 of the individual controllers once they are available.
- corejava2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6PS1 had dual sticks too. Ape Escape was one of the first games to utilize all of the buttons. I remember, cause I didn't have the PS1 dual stick to play it
so stop hating for the sake of hating, and making up facts. If you remember when the gamecube was first announced, they had by far one of the weirdest looking controllers ever. And when the gamecube finally came out? it had a controller NOTHING like what was first shown. - apoc06, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6everyone ALWAYS shows off the prototype first. thats the reason you create a prototype. the ps3 is alot different from the original prototype. lord forbid, cant a product change before it hits the shelf? the prototype wii was an empty box!
- fallenone05, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Sony says you're gay.
- charlescheese, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Dj, you are so hilarious. I mean seriously dude, where do you get your original comebacks? I've never heard that one before!! HAHAHA oh please save me from loling to death!
- jacksons98, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Who cares if they are using rumble. Its not Nintendos technology it's Immersions.
- GawtMilk, on 10/10/2007, -7/+10Penny Arcade just isn't funny any more. It's just constant bashing of minor events.
- GawtMilk, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6I turn rumble off when I'm playing games [if I can]. I think it's a useless feature, many people do.
- JigoroKano, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8I only have 2, I could theoretically use 5 more.
- knailbomb420, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6really ? name a console that had a rumble feature before the N64
- ElectricGrandpa, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Argh. Would it have been so hard to put quotes in the article description like in the original article?
1up is reporting that in their play-through with MGS4 that the controller shook in separate places.
"We did enjoy the various rumble effects employed by the new Dual Shock 3 controller, though: As explosions rattled around Snake, we could actually feel the direction from which they were coming based on what part of the controller vibrated." - maxsunset, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Sounds like a sweet update to the classic dual motor rumble! MGS, to me, always had the best examples of how to do rumble properly.
- ChildeRoland420, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5"Didn't they change it for the PS2 by adding the sticks?"
No. - brownspank, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Actually, if they keep on the right track, they'll do just that.
- DarkShroud, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2So do his parents.
- MWeather, on 10/10/2007, -6/+8Microsoft said there were no 360 hardware problems. Why does nobody bring that up? IMHO that's a much bigger lie than whether rumble is next-gen.
- piratearggghhh, on 10/10/2007, -5/+7I'm hoping they'll bundle this controller and make it the default controller before I buy a PS3 - with price drop. Maybe I'm asking for too much.
- DrThunder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Stereo means the two things work independently of one another. The dual shock 2 had two motors but they always vibrated together so they were mono not stereo. If you had 5 speaker all playing the same channel it is not surround sound its mono. So no the Dual in Dual Shock doesn't mean stereo it means two ***** motors. Hence the word DUAL meaning 2.
- charlescheese, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Considering it has direction based rumble...then I would say it is next gen as it hasn't been done before.
- DarkShroud, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I wonder if the Japanese controllers would work properly if imported? And it's cool to see it's an updated rumble function. I guess this is why the xBots are annoyed, they have last gen rumble that loves to eat up batteries.
I can imagine those fakes at the Sony Defense Force "It's a new type of rumble so really the old duel shock is last gen just like Sony said." - devate, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2To be honest I only said that because of the p.s. in his post, lol.
- rochdale, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6you have a plan?
- knailbomb420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yeah, too bad that they couldn't just make it so that you could just switch batteries, you know like all other controllers are able to do
- DarkShroud, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1@chris9902
No you try again. The duel shock design was released for the PS1. - zetsurin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"I wonder if the Japanese controllers would work properly if imported?"
It was confirmed recently by Sony themselves that the controllers with work with any PS3. - DarkShroud, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The 360 controller d-pad is garbage. I didn't think they could do worse after the d-pad on the original controller.
- devate, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Just install Linux on your PS3.
- DrThunder, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Stereo rumble seems like the logical next step for controllers. I am surprised that no one has done it already.
- InfinitySnatch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Place your controller on the floor."
- freakingretard, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1hey, i resent that!
- AwesomeAndy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Huh? The only major change to the prototype and final GC controllers was that the B button was changed from bean shaped to round for the final.
