- duggtodeath, on 06/30/2008, -5/+50It will be bundled with Duke Nukem Forever.
- TaosSW, on 07/01/2008, -5/+37This is a great update for all PlayStation 3 owners. It looks to me that the competition from Nintendo and Microsoft has pushed Sony to really make the PlayStation 3 an amazing system that I really enjoy. I try to look at this objectively from a perspective of someone with a PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, and gaming PC and it just looks like Sony is really dedicated to the machine now that they aren't on top.
Also, it seems like they are willing to keep this console alive for a while - which is great. Some of my friends haven't even pushed past the PlayStation 2 days, and some even some are rocking an N64 (no PlayStation 1s, surprisingly). When they do want to get a next generation gaming console, I am definitely going to recommend the PlayStation 3. - Jimmarn, on 06/30/2008, -9/+41I wonder when Home will release... Sick of waiting...
- RandyDisher, on 06/30/2008, -3/+231) Wrong. This is from Sony Computer Entertainment *Europe* i.e. English rather than American so recognise is correct
2) Yes.. and?
3) It merely means you can compare Trophies online, they are avaiable in single player. - RandyDisher, on 06/30/2008, -4/+24An updated version of flash would be nice
- ultrafez, on 07/01/2008, -2/+21A free online network.
- Kinnkster, on 07/01/2008, -3/+16Only a game like Duke Nukem Forever is awesome enough to have a console bundled with it.
- uncommonsmoke, on 06/30/2008, -6/+19Does this mean I can stop holding my breath?
I wonder if the trophies have in-game pop-ups that notify you that you unlocked it. - jordanlgta, on 07/01/2008, -4/+16Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced new online gaming functionality for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™), which will become available on July 2, 2008 with the 2.40 enhancement, an automatic firmware upgrade that delivers several of the features most requested by gamers. Combined with PLAYSTATION®Network’s unique service of free* online gaming, the enhancement makes PS3 an even more attractive platform of choice for the online gamer.
Firstly, the 2.40 enhancement allows XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) access in-game. This means that you can access the PS3 menu at any time while playing most games, simply by tapping the PlayStation button on your controller. With 2.40, you can check if any of your friends are online (thanks to their own user profile), read and send messages, change some settings for games, all without having to quit the game you are playing. While you can’t pause an online multiplayer game involving other people, you can rejoin play at any time when you’ve finished browsing. Along with these enhanced communications features, the Friends list capacity will double to 100 Friends.
2.40 also delivers trophies to recognise players’ achievements in the online arena. Other competitive activities recognise winners with trophies – so why not gaming on PS3? Many online games will have gold, silver and bronze trophies – with platinum available for those who snag all three – all displayed on the XMB for everyone to see.
Super Stardust™ HD, a PLAYSTATION Network-exclusive released last year, will be the first game to leverage the Trophies system and will offer a variety of trophies**. The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:
• BUZZ! Quiz TV
• LittleBigPlanet
• MotorStorm Pacific Rift
• NBA 09 - PS3
• PAIN**
• PixelJunk Eden
• Resistance 2
• SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
• Warhawk**
The 2.40 enhancement is just one more reason to join PSN, the online network for PS3 users that lets you game online for free*. All you need to do to join is connect your PS3 to broadband and register, or go to the connection guide at www.eu.playstation.com to find out more.
Once in, you’ll find online matches and leagues for all of your favourite games – whether that’s MotorStorm™, Resistance™, Warhawk™ or Gran Turismo™5 Prologue – absolutely free (although users are responsible for paying their broadband fees) and at any time of the day or night. You’ll also find PLAYSTATION®Store, where you can download entire games as well as extra levels, content for your existing games plus internet browsing, video chat thanks to PLAYSTATION®Eye and much, much more.
There’s never been a better time to join PSN. Sign up now to make the most of the 2.40 firmware enhancement - see www.(website).com to find out more. - coheedcollapse, on 07/01/2008, -3/+15They do. In the official Playstation Blog demo video of trophies, he unlocks a trophy in Super Stardust HD toward the end and a little thing pops up in the right corner (much like any other notification on the PS3) with a picture of the award as well as the name of the award.
You can see it here if you haven't already:

I was surprised that the news that hit the FP earlier this morning didn't have the release date info since it's been floating around the net since like 6:00 AM. - ibeetle, on 07/01/2008, -5/+16Why link to some gaming site. Link to the source. It was on Sony's own Playstation 3 web page first... 2 days ago.
- morphinapg, on 07/01/2008, -1/+11I believe closed beta started last fall, open beta should start this fall if they stay on schedule. Unfortunately they are taking so long that home won't be as big as it was originally hyped to be.
They should just release it as an ever expanding platform, much like the PS3 itself. Many of the features PS3 has now weren't there when PS3 was released. If there's enough features for a closed beta then they should just release it now, as long as they have the server power. Then, just extend Home every time there is a firmware update, or have it's own updates similar to how some games do. - ChinezePanda, on 07/01/2008, -2/+13For the past 3 years all I have seen on digg is 360 news so STFU.
- paulsmith288, on 07/01/2008, -1/+10sounds like you know everything in the whole world. But answer this, when are you going to reach puberty?
- truspector, on 06/30/2008, -5/+14Damn, I was really hoping Uncharted would be supported. Just one more reason why you should incorporate major features of a system into the OS BEFORE launching it, but no worries, better late than never.
- bdawg123, on 07/01/2008, -1/+9Built-in wireless
Blu-ray
Bluetooth - mywhitenoise, on 06/30/2008, -5/+12AAC file recognition.
Edit Multiple option for music, videos, games, and photos.
Unlock locked save files so that they work with your PSN ID, instead of your MAC address.
BC for 40GB PS3s
incremental updates to eventually have "full" in-game XMB
Minor things:
More color options for the background
add a color option for the silk
add more avatars - Drekken79, on 07/01/2008, -1/+8That was the stupidest thing I have ever read.
- inactive, on 07/01/2008, -1/+7The ability to install Linux, copy media/savegames to and from connected devices (discs/USB/flash cards/network) the ability to edit metadata/album art/thumbnails for the media, the ability to set a background while editing the scaling/cropping, the ability to make custom themes, the ability to install any hard drive/usb or bluetooth headset/webcam/mouse/keyboard, etc etc
- arcticblue, on 07/01/2008, -1/+7That sounds like something the game developers would have to implement (much like it was up to them to allow in-game music, messaging, etc, but very few did). I would imagine for a game like GTA4, they would have some sort of retroactive detection when you load a save.
At the same time though, this opens up a huge hole in which you could cheat the trophy system to make your e-peen bigger. Just copy someone else's 100% save and voila: insta-trophies! If a hole like that would be opened from retroactive trophies, then it's better if they just don't allow it. If you don't want to start over on GTA4, then just get some new games to earn trophies for. - theaceoffire, on 07/01/2008, -2/+8I hope LBP is as fun/easy as the Spore creature creator... That game looks like it will suck everyone's free time away...
- Mullinsmcd, on 07/01/2008, -1/+6Right, ArcticBlue hit it on the head. Using a save file to unlock trophies would be a bad move. Everyone is starting from scratch here so its not like anyone has a particular advantage. Personally, I am looking forward to the implementation of trophies within games like DMC4 and Uncharted so I have a great reason to replay the game.
- Wowerine, on 06/30/2008, -9/+13Hmm... I can't wait to get it! All those Trophies you can show your friends, and stuff. The in-game XMB also sounds very good! This makes it possible to have your own soundtrack for the game of your choice!:D
- inactive, on 07/01/2008, -1/+5No *****, we have a browser but the Flash support is about 5 years out of date. Youtube barely plays and Hulu fails.
- fadetoone, on 07/01/2008, -2/+6According to the Playstation blog, on which this was originally stated, you took the list almost completely out of context:
"PS3 users can expect to see additional games bringing Trophies support to their feature sets through 2008 and beyond, providing even greater opportunity to showcase their accomplishments and compete with friends. The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:
BUZZ! Quiz TV
LittleBigPlanet
MotorStorm Pacific Rift
NBA 09 - PS3
PAIN
PixelJunk Eden
Resistance 2
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
Warhawk"
As you can see that is a list of first party games only. - forcedfx, on 07/01/2008, -1/+5Finally.... can't wait. I have my USB keyboard ready to go.
- Sniper, on 07/01/2008, -1/+5They've already stated their looking to expand on the in-game XMB and other features introduced in firmware 2.40.
- boldfire, on 07/01/2008, -1/+5Sony say 70% of existing games will have patches very soon, and they're working with developers to get all new releases to have trophy support.
- damnyooneek, on 07/01/2008, -2/+6still weak no cross-game invite.
- username9000, on 06/30/2008, -5/+9List of games that trophies work with. Other than Warhawk, looks like this trophy system will need to wait until games are released. Yes, I understand that PAIN is out.

Not in English its not. - ausfahrt, on 07/01/2008, -1/+5Yes @fadetoone is right. I saw the guy in the video with Ratchet and Clank trophies as well as Super Stardust HD.
- GlueSniffer, on 07/01/2008, -2/+6It does make a sound when you unlock a, how you say, "trophie".
They updated the FAQ at the playstation blog. http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/06/30/firmware ... - MarrowMan, on 07/01/2008, -2/+6You're so gangstah
- retawd, on 07/01/2008, -3/+7Out of 85 Ps2 games and 40 Psx games, the only one I have that doesn't work is "Rock em Sock em Robots" for Psx. I'll just have to live with that.
- arcticblue, on 07/01/2008, -4/+8I've moved to Japan and work in an environment that is about half American and half Japanese (with a few Phillipinos scattered here and there). When it comes to recommending a game console, I usually suggest the PS3 first because it is region free (thank the FSM!). Japan (as well as many other East Asian countries) and the US are also in the same Blu-Ray region so movie compatibility isn't a worry either.
If price is an issue, then I suggest the Wii (with the Homebrew Channel and that region free program...I have it, but can't remember the name).
As much as I love the 360, I just can't suggest it to anyone who plans on working overseas because of all the region issues. For example, I can't download the Bioshock demo on my US 360 here in Japan even though they sell it here. I also can't download ANY movies or TV shows from the marketplace. Not even the trailers! Some games are region free, but they are never labeled as such. I can't suggest it to any Japanese people because Microsoft has treated the Japanese market like a forgotten step child. If we were in the States, it'd be a different story. I'd suggest the 360 in a heartbeat although the PS3 would come in a very close 2nd. - mamee, on 07/01/2008, -2/+5Shut up mac fanboy!
- inactive, on 07/01/2008, -2/+5Just message your friend to join you, they can see what game you're in and go to it. Its not that hard
- ATLien74, on 07/01/2008, -2/+5All my old ps2 games work on my 80 gig. Of course I only have a handful, GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas, Ready 2 Rumble, Tekken Tournament, GT3.
- Pissoff, on 07/01/2008, -1/+4He's right, my PS3 doesn't have red rings or death.
- truspector, on 06/30/2008, -6/+9Well it isn't here yet so obviously that date is incorrect.
- GeorgeStone2, on 07/02/2008, -0/+3Penn must be lying then.
- LeviTheSmith, on 07/01/2008, -2/+5When you get a trophy, does it make a noise?
How quickly things can change - there *will* be a sound effect when you unlock a Trophy. - inactive, on 07/01/2008, -1/+4They're planning the next 2 major updates to the system already
- coheedcollapse, on 07/01/2008, -4/+7Dammit. You will. Just read this myself and am a bit disappointed:
"No, Trophies aren’t retroactive."
Straight from the PS Blog FAQ page that went up recently.
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/06/30/firmware ...
I hope that they don't mean that they're 100% not retroactive. There is no way in hell I'm going to re-beat GTA4 100% again just to get some trophies. If that's the case, I'm going to be incredibly pissed. I hope it recognizes what I've done when I load the game and it reads the stats. - GeorgeStone2, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2Mr. Koft, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I've ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response was there anything that could even be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this thread is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul!
- Dracusis, on 07/02/2008, -0/+2At first there wasn't, now there is. I only hope I can switch all of it off. The last thing I want to see in the middle of a game when I'm really getting stuck into things is "You've unlocked *^*&^&*%$%^", really kills hte moment. First thing I did when I got my 360 was to switch all of that useless crap off.
- arcticblue, on 07/01/2008, -2/+4It looks to me that cross-game chat may be possible with 2.4. Under the friends list, there is an option called "Start new chat" (I saw it in the video. I'm not sure if it's in the current firmware since I'm at work and can't check). If this option is available in the in-game XMB, then that could very well mean cross-game chat is possible.
- robdiggity, on 07/01/2008, -1/+3Looks like you had some trouble typing that out... is it because you currently are rolling in your five point oh with your ragtop down so your hair can blow?
- telapan, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2hd-dvd add on, oh wait...
