- CaptMonkey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+30Wait, so if I'm understanding this all correctly, I can go anywhere else in the world as long as I'm in a Wi-fi hotspot, then turn on my PS3 and stream videos and music from it? That's actually kind of neat... but can I stream music and movies to my PSP that are available to my PS3 over my home network? I know it's a lot to ask, but that would be totally amazing. I could turn on my PSP somewhere and watch my entire collection of movies and music from my PC. If that's true, then I love you Sony, and I'm sorry for all the bad things I ever said about your game lineup! *sheds a tear*
- otakushark, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26It is very useful for Remote Play applications. You can turn on your home unit remotely, then play games, look at videos, listen to music, etc. remotely streamed from your PS3 to your PSP.
- guardianzero, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20ah sweet. The only reason i dont use remote play is because i would need to leave my PS3 on for hours.
Through remote play you can already check your windows media wervers(from what i remember) through the PS3 so this new feature allows you to check out all your media without worrying that your PS3 is gonna blow. (or that your pockets are gonna run dry)
Combine this with a user installable HDD of any size, and you've got quite the portable media collection. (bigger than an ipod? yea, but not as good quality due to streaming). The Achilles point of the whole set up, though, is latency and getting disconnected. (which can, and has happened to me, quite often) Just a heads up on that. - Phoenixus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17I think they stuff they are gunna start doing between the PSP and PS3 is really going to break new ground. This is the first step.
- Phoenixus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Yes you can. I do that, and as long as you have a good connection, it does really well. And my laptop is on wireless. :D
- AntBing, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12PS3 - $500.00
PSP - $200.00
where does the over $1000.00 come in again? - kalsey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Perfect. It makes remote play a LOT more practical, so when going out you don't have to leave your PS3 on just because you might want to access your media. A small change, but its something very useful.
- puzl, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9This functionality is available right now on the PSP/PS3 remote play. The PSP adopts the PS3 interface and you just browse your remote media sources as you would on your ps3. The power on/off functionality is sorely needed though, as I don't like leaving my ps3 on when I'm not in the home. One thing you should note though: when the psp connects for remote play, the ps3 can not be used simultaneously.
In short, the feature is amazingly useful, though perhaps in a limited way. - WhereAmI, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Hook it up to your friends TV, too.
- Harrison88, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Or you could buy a PSP Slim & Light, stream some movies to your PSP and hook it up to your TV. Awesome :)
- Uberpussy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I'm looking forward to the TV PVR add on. When thats out I'm buying a PSP so I can watch the TV thats been recorded by my PS3 anywhere in the world! I brought my PS3 mainly because of the media stuff and they keep adding to it. Great news!
Also I leave my PS3 on a lot doing @home and also playing music. It's not a problem at all, its quality hardware designed to be left on but this will reduce my electric bill :D - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It is pretty neat and I'm looking forward to it. The way it's setup now, you have to specifically put your PS3 in remote play mode before you can attach to it via the PSP. I always forget to do that then I fire up the PSP when I'm out and try to stream some music, and it fails. This is a big leap.
- puzl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Finally my home network is starting to take on some of the features I've been wanting for years. I have a large disk with all of my media library attached to a PC running the tversity suite of software. My ps3 can now easily browse this extensive music, movie and photo library and my PSP can be used to easily extend access to this library to a more casual interface. I like the idea of being able to allow kids to watch a movie in their bedroom without having to permanently place a TV there ( which is a terrible idea IMO ). What's even better is I can control when access is disabled from the comfort of my sofa. When you add PlayTV into the equation next year, you'll be able to watch live tv on it too.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7$1000 = a grand you nimrod. Unless you're in another country, in which case it'd be called Le Grande or something else.
- WhereAmI, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I don't know about your piece of *****, but my PC did not save me several hundred than if I went with the sole PSP/PS3 combo.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Wow, I heard some news today that improved my opinion of the PS3. Is this a dream?
- WhereAmI, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Your complaining because you play your PS3 while connected with the PSP? Also, Remote Play works on any wireless network, and you can even play LAIR (I guess....if you want...) on the PSP over the internet (hopefully more games). I just don't see how it is limited.
- fallenone05, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Holly ***** my psp all of a sudden will have 60 gigs of storage capacity for movies and music! I need to upgrade my ps3 hard drive, cause you now that it's better when you have MORE! MORE ! MORE!
- fallenone05, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4LEAVE THE PS3 ALONE!
- puzl, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4It doesn't have to be a selling point to be useful. Many people have a psp and a ps3 and will find this extremely useful. many people have a ps3 already and consider the $200 investment to have remote play well worth the money.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Still won't get your cheaper goods? Waaahhhh.. Guess what, these products aren't built in the US, aren't shipped from the US. Talk to Japan about conversion rates and your legislature about import tarriffs/duties.
- Dracusis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Add the ability to access the Playstation Store on the Web via any internet enabled device, increased PSP PC connectivity, easily replaceable PS3 HDD and you have a very new looking Sony. Who'd have though all of this device interoperability would come from the once makers of the proprietary Mini-Disc.
I can hear the rumble of the fan boy wars revving up again in the background. Exciting times ahead, and proof that industry competition is always a good thing. - loganhid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3this would be cool. You usually leave on your ps3 to stream media but that leaves the console being on all that time - this will come in very handy and help to save a lot of power
- lepton, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I assume remote turn-on kicks it into remote play. I hope I can also force an already-on PS3 into remote play as well. This would be good, for example, with a PS3 that runs Folding at Home when idle. I also hope there is a remote off as well, or a way to turn off remote play remotely so FAH can kick back in.
- Nodren, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3thats an excellent point, except the fact you failed to explain what country you live in, and what currency you live with, so what do you expect people to think when you say something stupid like that?
- TERMDEFINED, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Competition is a great thing! Keep the competition going! It is what drives innovation.
- Zoxy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2not to mention if you set up streaming, you have access to all the storage on your home network computers.
- Dracusis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You need to register the device via a USB cable connection before remote play is allowed. It would mean you'd need a PSP with homebrew and custom software written to give the PSP the ability to spoof it's signature, and for the "hacker" to know what signature is registered on the target PS3 so they can spoof the right one, then they could conceivably connect remotly. All in all that's a very, very unlikely circumstance seeing as the whole handshake process is probably encrypted and I doubt homebrew developers (the 3 or 4 left worldwide that still cut code) would want to waste their time with such potentially malicious applications.
- WhereAmI, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You can also use the PS3 with Mac and Linux, meaning MythTV, so MythTV users don't even need the TV PVR add on (unless its better than what we have). Those of us that already have MythTV can connect through the PSP-internet-PS3-PC. There is no frontend for the PSP, but the PS3 will be the front end and your just browsing the folder just like in windows. I wonder if there is a way to enable MythTV via the PSP (like telling it to record something)?
- knightofeffect, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I got to give it to them. I have always been very impressed with the 360s media capabilities, but this just completely blows it out of the water. The is the most immersive, accessable media experience I could imagine. Hopefully the owners of this will be able to add "seemless" to those adjectives...
I hate to say it, but I really really wish I had this functionality... not for ~$800 though - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Uh, you *do* know you can plug them into your PC to charge, right?
- WarmMachine, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Wonder how long it will take for somebody to figure out how to turn off another persons ps3 while they are playing against them online.
- dadood, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I have been using Remote Play for a while now. Its awesome. I have a 1 gb card in my PSP but at a WiFi hotspot I have access to a Terabyte of media. Not to mention surfing the net through the PS3 on Remote Play is much better too. You can watch youtube vids!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"I wonder if there is a way to enable MythTV via the PSP (like telling it to record something)"
Yeah, there's a web interface for MythTV that allows you to set recordings, watch videos, listen to music, etc. It has been in Knoppmyth for years. - knightofeffect, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It would really be complete if you could rip the media or files you want from your PS3/PC onto the memorystick in the PSP... yea that is really reaching for the stars though.
- bightchee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Who needs to buy a PS3 when my PSP can play Donkey Kong?
- DarkShroud, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I thought Sony was a Japanese company?
- Dracusis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You can get wall chargers that will plug into a USB/Mini-B Device. Perhaps you could set-up one of these near your PS3 and use ti to charge the controllers instead.
- WhereAmI, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Those of you that don't have a PSP,
GTA, both of them
Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters
Daxter
Twisted Metal: Heads On
God Of War: Chains Of Olympus (not out yet)
Crisis Core (out in Japan but if you read japanese you have already imported or "imported" the game)
And there's more. Have fun. - DarkShroud, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm betting you are a fellow American who put his foot in his mouth and refused to admit other wise. At least for you sake I hope this is true otherwise you are very stupid.
- DarkShroud, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Then buy the rapid charging stands.
- DarkShroud, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If you're running Folding@Home then it's good to forget.
- WhereAmI, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Like when I say get me a bakers dozen of eggs and the people only come back with 12...
- Dracusis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1LocoRoco was released on the Playstation Store last night, but if you'd bothered to check you wouldn't have time to be here complaining about games.
- WhereAmI, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3I think thats the best part but its also useful if you forget to turn off your PS3. It's not that bad but whats another 10 cents saved(idle)?
http://digg.com/hardware/XBOX_PS3_and_Wii_Power_Co ... - JackTreehorn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Not sure if it can be done with a firmware upgrade or if it's a hardware limitation, but I'd like to see them leave the USB ports powered when the system is off. I don't feel like having a 10 foot USB cord across the living room or a hub next to the sofa just to charge the controllers.
- stonr2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0or he/she could try the "demo" from the pirate bay; that is what I am doing and it works well.
- stolenisotope1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1They are made and Assembled in CHINA, but are sold by AMERICANS!! The price that they are sold at are also controlled by America. Thanks Uncle Sam.
- JackTreehorn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Of course I realize they can be plugged into a PC. But why should I need a PC in a addition to a media streaming, web browsing, game playing device in the living room. Again its a minor issue, and it would be nice to be able to charge the controllers with the short USB cord supplied while I'm gone during the day without drawing ~200 watts to power a 2.5w USB port.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Do yourself a favor and spend a few bucks on the Nero suite. It has the Mediahome service that transcodes and streams anything and it actually _works_ all the time. It's 100% DLNA compatible. I tried TVersity and other junk before I found that the latest Nero suite worked perfectly.
