- bigbadgoat, on 10/10/2007, -3/+38lose USB ports: how are you going to charge the controllers
lose backwards compatibility: why would they decide something thats now just emulated via software.
that really makes no sense. - amrush4th, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20That was a total load. Every letter of it. Backwards compatibility is already just software in the 80 gig...you can't lose it anymore then it already has been. And no USB? who's butt did that get pulled from. If you are going to make ***** up, at least do a slightly better job of it.
- Ndiggnation, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12I would gather it means "lose USB ports" as in some, not all.
- AwesomeMonster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10It's a rumor, don't get worked up over it.
- statix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10First of all it would be more expensive to support the 40GB as it would be harder and harder to support old technologies, which is why Sony ditched the 60GB harddrive for the 80GB.
Second, no USB Ports? that would totally render your PS3 useless to devices such as the EyeToy, which create revenue for Sony. Also you would lose that ability to charge your controllers, and there is no other way (as of now) to recharge your batteries.
Third, no backwards compatibility? They would actually have to spend time REMOVING it rather than keeping it there. Its all software now, so it costs them nil.
Pure BS. - guardianzero, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12what would make me buy a 360 if i have a PS3? 50 dollars a year for something that's always been free?
- wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Perhaps they have more than one USB bus controller onboard? Dropping some ports may enable them to drop some more chips too, like removing the PS2-compatibility hardware.
- Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I'll kill them if they went with removable power packs/batteries.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I thought the same thing too, however this rumor is starting to get more and more attention. A newer article just popped up on the same website. I'd rather shell out the $100 for the backwards compatiblity, and USB ports. You can resell your PS2 for near $100 if you tried hard enough.
http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/09/24/rumour-40gb-ps ... - Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Without the lag and the cursing 12 year olds, too!
- nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6great. they have different games?
- aerotive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4This rumored PS3 still includes a hard drive, unlike the Core 360. Owners of it would still get nearly all the functionality of the more expensive SKUs.
- nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4@ truspector(microsoft fanboy), first of all, how often are you playing for 30hrs straight? You can charge when you're not playing. Also, it's not like you can't play WHILE charging either. Your solution is to get a $50 controller, a play and charge kit, and an extra battery, instead of just the $50 SIXAXIS. GREAT IDEA
- aegis9975, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5This is just a rehash of old news being reported by a different media outlet.
In fact, the stripped-40GB PS3 FUD rumor was started by Microsoft representative Andre Vrignaud in an interview for N'gai's Level Up Newsweek blog.

http://kotaku.com/gaming/addicts/microsoft-bets-ng ... - razor150, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Dropping the USB ports wouldn't save them much money.
- bigbadgoat, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Nothing like adding a $30 play and charge kit to my $40 controller.
A $50 Ps3 is actually far cheaper than a xbox controller.
Did I mention free replacement if the battery dies? - JayD16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yeah, if you just had one you could always have a USB hub.
- triplehelix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3wag i have to commend you on the first reasonable comment by you, in a ps3 thread, i've come across.
- Dracusis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I honestly think Sony doesn't care about Halo 3. XBOX and Halo fans will buy it regardless, Sony needs to focus on converting their PS2 customers which outweigh 360 owners my a massive margin. I can't see too many PS2 fans being hot for Halo 3, it's mostly the old XBOX 1 crowd and current 360 owners going nuts for it. There's still a lot of room for Sony to acquire new sales and it'll be interesting to see how it plays out over the next few years.
- nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5the ps3 controller batteries are so much of a better setup than the 360 ones, I spent a good $30 on AA's before i went rechargeable. Having rechargeable batteries standard is way better. You're just trying to plus 360 as much as you can.
- slimthps, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4The article is NOT about losing all USB ports, just some of them. Most PS3 users do not use all 4 USB ports anyways.
- BrandonMills, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2FoxConn makes a *ton* of stuff. From absolute *****, to high end parts. It's hard to open up any PC without finding something made by FoxConn. ( not just the main pieces, but parts on the motherboard, drives, etc. )
- vtnerd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Looks fake.
But with that said, FoxConn makes some ***** computer cases so I really don't trust them to manufacture something like a PS3. - sam10685, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Just a bunch of horny fanboys.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Don't they make the 360? So yeah, I don't trust them.
- nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I use 3 of them (1 for charging controller, 1 for external hard drive, 1 for charging headset).
- Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I like my internal WiFi adapter. It's just one less corded object that I have to deal with in an already wire-cluttered area. And I hate the fact that I'd have to shell out around $100 for an adapter for my 360 if I want to enjoy the freedom of no ethernet cord running through my house.
I kind of look at it like I look at my laptop. There's no reason why I should have wires and cables and crap (other than the necessary power and A/V cables) coming out of the hardware. - mywhitenoise, on 10/10/2007, -9/+11depends on which one. Even a 40GB PS3 with no backward compatibility, and USB ports would be better than an Elite. The 40GB would still have (assuming these rumors are true) wi-fi, HDMI, easy to upgrade hard drave, and a blu-ray player.
- iChainsaw, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5the PS3 is an amazing system...it beats the 360 in quality and power (by a long shot), but is difficult to develop for and misses the target consumer price...so that is why it fails.
- NinjaPig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Here's speculation, purely theoretical.........
-They keep ps2 backwards compatibilty as emulation
-Scale down the USB ports down to 2
-and make the new dualshocks battery operated. - Bartboy919, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6I think FF XIII is enough reason to want a PS3, its just that they cost so damn much...
- ahatter, on 10/10/2007, -5/+7they should not have to own a computer to charge there controller.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3cplex Halo 1 ran natively on MacOSX (I have a burned copy myself). And believe it or not, Macs can play PC games by booting into Windows.
- razor150, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2As I said above, I think the 80gig PS3 still has the Graphics Synthesizer in it. I am pretty sure I've read some where that emulating the EDRAM on it is pretty much impossible so they still need that for emulation. The Cell has more then enough power to emulate the Emotion Engine.
- vault, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Time Crisis when it comes out with GunCon
- xmod3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yes ur correct, the 80gb has GS
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2099538,00.as ... - xmod3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1'Duh, this makes no sense.' It makes no sense because you don't know what you're talking about.
BC is not totally software, BC on the Euro ps3's and the 80gb ps3's requires the Graphics Synthesizer chip of the ps2 (the ps2 had the EE as the CPU and the GS as the GPU). The 40gb ps3 will lose the GS and thus lose BC.

From Link: Q: Does this mean that the PS2 hardware chips have been removed completely and replaced with software-only emulation?
A: The original PS3 used the Emotion Engine/Graphics Synthesizer to emulate PS2 titles. With the latest European specification we have removed the Emotion Engine, retaining the graphics chip. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1RUMOR: Sony announcing 37.8GB PS3 this week.... also included in this fascinating release... 43.5GB, 48.2GB, and 30.000009GB models
- xmod3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You're ignorant. BC is not totally software, BC on the Euro ps3's and the 80gb ps3's requires the Graphics Synthesizer chip of the ps2 (the ps2 had the EE as the CPU and the GS as the GPU). The 40gb ps3 will lose the GS and thus lose BC.

- WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I hear there's a rumor going around the PS3 will be $400, same price as a 360.
- zehrila, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They do have some good games any ways it sounds really great lets hope its not a rumor:)
- nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1@ myself, "plug" not "plus"
- WhereAmI, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1When I use my uncles 360 I wish to hell the thing had more USB ports. As far as I am concerned the number of controllers should equal the number of USB ports at least. Well, thats for a sane amount such as 4. I know the PS3 can support 7 Bluetooth devices but thats in general "devices."
- WhereAmI, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Nothing, this is a rumor.
- triplehelix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1there have only been 25 million (ish) consoles sold combined this generation. the ps2 sold 120 mill+ on its own last generation. are you trying to say we've reached market saturation already?
- DudleyInnocent, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3So tell me, $50 breaks your bank account? I'm sorry. Perhaps you should not have bought a $600 peice of hardware.
And believe me that $50 goes to a better online service. This is coming from someone who's used the PSN and XBLive. If Sony charged for PSN it'd be a better service rather than the "tell you nothing until it's been released for two days" thing they have going. - khpmli, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i think Sony is buying hard drivers from some vendor & taking the cheapest ones and making every time a new SKU when the model don't match previous ones
