- Spyder228, on 03/16/2009, -2/+79Just lower the prices of the freaking games. Sixty dollars a piece is ridiculous.
- WhereAmI, on 03/16/2009, -19/+65"What's the problem publishers?"
Third party Wii games don't sell. - BlackholeStorm, on 03/16/2009, -3/+48I'm pretty sure publishers can't cut the price of the PS3.
- smacksaw, on 03/16/2009, -6/+47The PS3 is in a tough spot, because it's very similar to the 360, so the PS3 argument has to be something really different. The argument was "Blu-Ray" except that no one cared.
Devs can argue Wii since it's very different and the games are made to take advantage over it's novel control scheme.
The PS3 is much more like the 360 than anything else. Right now, price matters and the 360 beats the PS3 in that regard. I don't know, because if Sony cuts the price, the argument against the 360 doesn't change since they are so similar. Sony might be better off preserving profitability and focusing on quality. - Sirocco, on 03/16/2009, -10/+42Sure they do, if you put some effort into them and provide proper marketing.
- ELCad, on 03/16/2009, -7/+38Guitar Hero on Wii has outsold the PS3 and 360 versions every time. Makes you wonder why EA delays RockBand for the Wii.
- Cerialthriller, on 03/16/2009, -9/+39but how many Wii games are worth playing aside from Mario Kart and Brawl. I seriously know atleast 5 people who have a Wii and the only game they own is the Wii Sports it comes with. The Wii sales are inflated by these people that arent going to buy games they just want to do the bowling and golf. My parents and grandmother are included in this demographic.
- p4r4d0x, on 03/16/2009, -13/+36Honestly, I'm surprised more development hasn't shifted to the Wii in the first place. Hello? Largest install base? Huge potential for envelope-pushing gameplay? What's the problem publishers?
- nochilinopity, on 03/16/2009, -7/+25Buried for inaccuracy. Publishers have no say in the price of the PS3, and Sony has no plan to cut prices (FTA).
- americanzero87, on 03/16/2009, -4/+20How is the controller the worst? I thought it was really easy to use when playing Zelda or RE4, and if I want to play Brawl I just use a GC controller. If I want to play Virtual Console games, I can use a classic controller (which works with a lot of Wii games as well). I think the controller is better for the Wii, because of all the options you have. Personally, I can't stand the two joystick scheme, but I think that is because I am used to playing FPS games on my computer with a keyboard and mouse.
- reaper527, on 03/16/2009, -2/+18"“You can’t ignore the guy who has half the market,” said Peter Moore, head of sports games at Redwood City, California- based Electronic Arts, maker of the “Madden NFL” series. "
thats easy to say if your the head of a division that is 100% multi-platform. every ea sports game (which is his part of ea) is ps3, 360, and wii.
and why isn't 360 mentioned in this shift? the 360 is much more comparable to the ps3 from a gaming perspective. the wii is a whole different case entirely. the wii is a bunch of crappy kids games, with the occasional good first party game tossed in.
also worth mentioning
"Sony has no immediate plan to reduce prices, said Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America"
of course they "don't". if they officially say they have plans to reduce prices, console sales will stop until they do. they may or may not be planning on dropping prices, but they wouldn't admit it publicly if they were. - fuzzynyanko, on 03/16/2009, -1/+17They do have leverage. If enough simply say "We're abandoning the PS3 and only going to make Wii and 360 titles..." Sony can't ignore the third party, unless they want to become more like Sega or Nintendo
- Malarie, on 03/16/2009, -0/+15Good Comment.
Its sad for Sony, but they have to cut their price AND bring the backward compatibility back. I am the owner of the 1st 80GB generation, with BC integrated, and i am a happy panda, but a lot of my friends want a PS3 but they're not getting it just because the BC was removed. - Volatile36, on 03/16/2009, -1/+16Especially when you buy a multi-system release. PS3 and 360 owners have to pay $60, while Wii and PC owners pay only $50.
- danwallace, on 03/16/2009, -4/+19There are more than just exclusives to play, genius. COD4, COD5, SFIV, GTA4, Uncharted, Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, RE5, NHL09 and MGS4 take up a lot of my time. On top of that, it looks like a lot of good ***** is on its way. FFXIII, DC Universe Online, AVP3, Arkham Asylum, Bioshock 2, Dead Rising 2, God of War III, Heavy Rain (which, let's face it, is a good example of a game that the 360 just can't handle), inFamous, Gran Turismo 5, King of Fighters XII, Rage, Uncharted 2, a new Twisted Metal game, new Chronicles of Riddick and probably a bunch more I don't know about.
And hey, if you live in your parents basement and have a ***** little TV, torrented DVD rips might be the way to go. I work for a living and own a nice HD LCD tv with a decent audio setup. You'll see the difference watching a blu-ray movie at my place. - nickert0n, on 03/16/2009, -11/+25"PS3 sales in the next 12 months are likely to total 14 million, compared with 28 million Wiis and 9.7 million Xbox 360s, according to the Daiwa Institute of Research, a Tokyo-based researcher and consultant."
- uberchaoslord, on 03/16/2009, -0/+14You sir, have clearly never had a girlfriend if you think they're cheap hahahaha
- kmoed, on 03/16/2009, -4/+18how do you download the track packs for GH with no HD?
SD CARD. - onClipEvent, on 03/16/2009, -0/+13if you lowered the price to $50 (for example), many more people would buy it right away instead of:
1) waiting for the price to go down (below $50)
2) borrow from friends ($0 profit)
3) buy used for $40 ($0 profit)
or worse,
4) prevent people from actually buying a PS3 in the first place because it's so expensive to play games (like me)
learn from Valve. - SirVenro, on 03/16/2009, -3/+14The problem is that no one really figured the Wii would be as big as it is. And now no one really knows what to do with it, which is why developers are currently flooding the market with crapware trying to find something that sticks. Ever pick up a Madden game for the Wii and compare it to the 360 version? Its horrible! I can take the graphics cut just fine, but EA guts all the features that are the selling points for the 360 and PS3 versions.
- mike23w, on 03/16/2009, -1/+12True, but accuracy has never been a criteria for a front page digg story.
- Stiles05s, on 03/16/2009, -1/+12I still won't buy one. Nothing against sony, I'm just broke.
- imronburgundy83, on 03/16/2009, -2/+12I own all 3 and it's awesome. 360 for online multiplayer, PS3 for blu-ray, and Wii (gift) to play the occaisonal ***** party game with friends.
- trythison4sighs, on 03/16/2009, -4/+14I can't wait! I've been wanting a ps3 for a long time now!
- NeoTechni, on 03/16/2009, -24/+33"Honestly, I'm surprised more development hasn't shifted to the Wii in the first place. Hello? Largest install base?"
Hello? Worst hardware. Worst online. Worst third party game sales. Worst controller.
Devs don't want to make a crappy game just to sell
"but EA guts all the features that are the selling points for the 360 and PS3 versions."
Cause it can't be done on weaker hardware. It's not just graphics - chanop, on 03/16/2009, -2/+11I'm included in this demographic. Don't get me wrong, It's great to pull out sometimes and play with friends. Otherwise, I don't expect to buy any more games for it.
- JamesBondQ, on 03/16/2009, -1/+10I really hope this doesn't mean more casual crap. Casual gaming is this fad that's prompting every developer to pump out pointless garbage titles.
- Sedako, on 03/16/2009, -1/+10There are quite a few people I know who want a Ps3, but are waiting for a more reasonable price. I'd love to see what happens to it's sales when the cut finally happens.
- petebot, on 03/16/2009, -0/+9It's crazy, but it might work. I have a 360, which I play the ***** out of. We bought a Wii because my gf wanted to get "Wii fit". We recently upgraded to an HDTV because our old one crapped out on us. When we're in the market for a Bluray player, if the PS3 is the right price, I will definitely scoop it up. Weird how you can justify owning all 3 consoles, isn't it?
- Cerialthriller, on 03/16/2009, -12/+20how do you download the track packs for GH with no HD?
- SkippyDoorknob, on 03/16/2009, -0/+8I'm sure Sony has plans for a price cut, but there's no way they'll even hint at it until they actually do it.
- styn, on 03/16/2009, -1/+9Wii might have the largest install base, but the number of games bought per console sold is the lowest. This makes it less attractive for third party publishers to publish for the wii.
- Calcularius, on 03/16/2009, -0/+8You know, people we be more inclined to buy an expensive console if the game media wasn't so damn expensive.
$60 a piece for new titles? That's too much!
When just 7 games cost more than the console I'm guessing it makes many people decide that owning any console will be too expensive. - rknowles10, on 03/16/2009, -0/+7I agree, but I admit that I only buy games at full price in extremely rare situations.
- Sneezyx, on 03/16/2009, -2/+9When you consider the development costs and value for money in terms of hours of enjoyment, games are really not that much more expensive than other forms of home-based entertainment, and in some cases they're cheaper. And those of us that truly enjoy games would also argue that they're better.
- bigfatphony19, on 03/16/2009, -3/+10I don't think 60 is ridiculous for a lot of high budget games, but there should definitely be more variety in the prices.
- CoD4, on 03/16/2009, -3/+10l2troll with more subtlety
- ChristoFox, on 03/16/2009, -2/+9But if the "fanboys" hadn't have bought one then the price would have been lowered earlier, so really they are laughing at you being too poor to afford one
- lemur, on 03/16/2009, -2/+9OK here are some Wii titles to try... Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Okami, Tales of Symphonia, No More Heroes, Red Steel, Metroid Prime... any Gamecube game...
This is by no means a complete list (I don't even own a Wii), but just some noteworthy titles off the top of my head. There's another Final Fantasy title pending release as well. From what I read, there are some delicious titles available on Virtual Console for gaming enthusiasts.
My point is that there are actually lots of Wii games "worth playing," even though the majority of Wii owners won't play them. Also, most people seem to agree that Wii offers an exceptional multiplayer experience, so for example Mario Kart and Smash Bros are games that give the Wii unique value compared to other consoles (you could just get these two games and continue to play them with friends and family for years). - uberchaoslord, on 03/16/2009, -5/+11If you don't have a TV that is capable of HD, then sure you don't care about blu-ray. And paying for movies is how the market works, commie :P
- KrustyTClown, on 03/16/2009, -3/+9I don't know Puft, I have a PS3 and Multiplayer is great. The dedicated servers allow for lag free gaming and crystal clear voice communication. I have also noticed that the better multiplatform games like COD4, GTA4, Fallout 3, Oblivion, Grid all look and perform better on the PS3. you should check it out. It really is a great gaming system.
- danwallace, on 03/16/2009, -3/+9@puft
No, they aren't. And you have no idea what you're talking about. I have never had a single issue with online multiplayer. Not one. And it's free. You'll believe anything you read if it supports your justification of actually PAYING to play online after already paying for the game. What kind of fool does that? - Singular1ty, on 03/16/2009, -5/+11"Worst online" is by NO means an opinion, Friend codes? Really?
The wiimote was a huge disappointment for me, It's not sensitive enough for natural feeling reproduction of movements ( I know about motion plus, but really an add-on to make it do what Nintendo said it could out of the box?) or fine control and the lack of easily used during play buttons (wiimote w/ nunchucks: 8 buttons (+2 if you count + and - but I think they are hard to reach when playing.) to 360s: 14 and ps3s: 15 (all of the buttons on the dual shock are easy to reach at any time so I'm counting select but not start since its rarely used for anything other than pausing)) and trying to use the gamecube or classic controller as an out only weakens any argument by admitting that the wiimote is inherently flawed. - BabyWookie, on 03/16/2009, -1/+7You don't need to spend $100 on the wireless adapter. You can just use a $40 wireless bridge. Also, the yearly XBL Gold subscription card can be had for $30 from several online retailers.
- reaper527, on 03/16/2009, -6/+12agreed. however i feel that the ps3 is losing more exclusives than the 360 is. losing the exclusivity on bioshock and mass effect were huge blows, but the ps3 has lost virtua fighter, tekken, final fantasy, devil may cry, resident evil (yes, i know a few res games were on gamecube/wii, but for the sake of argument...)
blu-ray was a bad choice for sony. it wasn't needed, and introduces technical hindrances. the 360 has a much faster optical drive, and with the exception of the occasional rpg, the dvd9 still has enough storage capacity that disc swapping isn't necessary.
i think the biggest thing the ps3 has working against it is that it lost its stranglehold on the rpg market that the ps2 had. the 360 has a pretty expansive library of jrpg's, and western rpg's (and many are exclusives). - imronburgundy83, on 03/16/2009, -1/+6Unless those publishers are actually going to make some good games for the Wii for once, don't bother switching to Nintendo if the PS3 prices don't drop.
- diggduggDOOM, on 03/16/2009, -1/+6Only if you're 'renting' or inflating this "girlfriend."
- cozinator, on 03/16/2009, -0/+4I haven't bought a $60 game in a while. If you keep an eye on the deal sites like Cheap Ass Gamer, you can get them for $50 (sometimes much less if it's been out for a while). I'll even resort to buying a used copy at Gamestop if I have to, but I'll almost never pay the full $60.
- ELCad, on 03/16/2009, -2/+6How are they going to sell 14 million in 12 months? They haven't even broken a million a month so far this year.
- DJMattB241, on 03/16/2009, -0/+4Oh definitely. The reason that tons of people who don't normally play videogames are buying Wii's is because they're hackable.
Amazing. -
