This looks to be purely a pissing contest with a total 35 amps pushing 37 speaker boxes, wow. They all seem to be the top of the line, that model of McIntosh-2102 seem to be going around for about 3500-4100 USD each.
But ya there are people who can afford both. - Karzyn, on 02/10/2008, -4/+7And that's why you're cousin is a better (and probably happier) person than whoever wasted their money on this.

And why would you have 16 subs in a circle, extreme low frequency sound is non directional and a proper big pro subwoofer tucked away in a corner would do the same job as 16 shoddy bass reflex boxes.
more money than sense springs to mind either of the person self building this setup, or the happy shark who sold the mug the equipment.

- bobthegreat1224, on 02/10/2008, -25/+13Definitely impressive, but I'd rather pick up a Dell 2400mp and Logitec Z5500s and spend the leftover cash on something like a friggin' Ferrari. Have 1080i, THX cert DTS 5.1, and 4 sec 0-60s, will go.
- themacx, on 02/10/2008, -0/+21the owner got plenty ferrari, lamborghini and Veyron, but 30x! McIntosh MC-2102 Amplifiers he didn't so...
- buckvitulli, on 02/10/2008, -4/+2Z-5500's can't fill a modest living room with proper sound. They worked fine in a dorm room and sucked when I got a house.
- rotten777, on 02/10/2008, -1/+4Not sure what was wrong with yours but mine are extraordinary via digital opti and setup correctly.
- Rizmaster, on 02/10/2008, -0/+13A 1024x768 res projector is not in the same class as ANY home theatre projector. Let alone a Sony Perl 1080p.
And Z5500s are okay by PC standards, but they don't hold a candle to a real 7.1 setup.
That said what we just saw was crazy wasteful. I would get a higher end Onkyo and either build my own speakers or buy 8 of them part for part and get very close to that guy's QUALITY of sound. Maybe not Quantity. But I'm not looking to deafen my audience. Don't know what the point of that guy's setup was. The circular speaker placement is more likely to WEAKEN the surroundsound experience by pushing the boundaries of where a channel is.
All in all, yeah, you could do something perfectly okay for less than 1% of what he paid and spend the rest on ***** stock so you don't blow 6 million dollars.- citydragon, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2Onkyo kit wouldn't come anywhere near.
- bobthegreat1224, on 02/11/2008, -1/+0Oh, I'm quite familiar with the inadequacy of the setup. The color wheel on the Dell is problematic, and res is sub-par, but it's brighter by far than any direct competitor in the home market from what I've seen. When light control's an issue, it's a good choice. And the Logitechs are fine for movies and games in a small room, but have horrible mid reproduction for more intensive listening on stuff like music because of the cone diameter.
All I'm saying is I could really go for a Ferrari ;)

Yep, it doesn't get much better than that..- monospaced, on 02/11/2008, -1/+5It would be "better" if he had more of a home theatre setting, in my opinion. His setup is totally insane, don't get me wrong, but having all those parts cluttering the room is a bit distracting. A separate cooled room for the amps would be nice, and it's not too much more trouble to sink some speakers (and/or subs) into the walls. Plus, his room doesn't seem like the ideal proportions for a true surround sound experience, which calls for a deeper, narrower room.

- TearJerker, on 02/10/2008, -1/+10"This is just the Beta version, there will be one a step higher called, yep, the Alpha."
Alpha would imply that it's a lower end or previous system. Alpha comes before Beta.
(Ex: Ubuntu 8.04 currently in Alpha, it will then go Beta, and then get released.) - Delmore, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1"Alpha" and "Beta" are letters of the Greek alphabet and are used for numerous purposes far more common than just computer related developmental stages. In this instance, I would imagine it's a play on the term "Alpha Male," designating it as the leader in a pack of home theater systems.
- ElAssoWipo, on 02/10/2008, -18/+494Biggest waste of money I've ever seen.
30 amps is completely useless. I'd even guess that so much equipment completely defeats the purpose of every piece of equipment he's got in there.
Also, for the same price, he could've had an entire house built with a custom-made acoustics room that hides all the equipment and gives better sound. He could even have an actual theater room created, with cinema type seats, professional projector and a complete THX sound setup. And then have enough money left to build a school in some third world country.- likeyehokwhatev, on 02/10/2008, -3/+4230 amps would be plenty useful (1 amp per speaker would give most control and absolute cleanest sound depending on quality of components), but it's a completely ridiculous idea for most. Of course, if you can blow 6mil on something like this, practicality isn't really in play :)
- JD52, on 02/10/2008, -7/+53This whole thing has fail written all over it. Looks to me like some ass hat had way too much money laying around and needed something to waste it on. Not to mention it looks like ***** and apparently it only seats three (plus a dog).

- ashamedgorilla, on 02/10/2008, -4/+74If you knew what amps and speakers were actualy in the system, you wouldn't be saying that.
These pictures are from an article in Home Theater Magazine, and when I read the article, It explains how the owner didn't want to completely hide the amps because they are tube amps, and he wanted every piece of them to be seen in all their glory. The room is THX and Dolby Digital compliant, and that screen, displays in Digital 4K resolution (4096 × 1714), which is much greater than 1080i/p. And if you were to go ahead and say that that is useless, he uses the same media that movie theaters use to show digital movies, so he is using all of the pixels.

- aelias, on 02/10/2008, -2/+8I'm willing to bet that a considerable amount of time was spent with an RTA machine in that room. Those amps really are art. They should be displayed. I also am willing to be that, as cool as it turned out to look, it's still almost 90% function over form. They didn't just throw the speakers next to each other to make it loud. They are measured and angled to the centimeter. Each driver is time aligned, and having what looks to be one amp per driver allows for gods own headroom. In the dark, watching a movie must be intense.

This isn't some rich jackass trying to show off. This is an audio engineer who lived next to the creator of the modern projector who not only wanted to see what the absolute limit of what could be done was, but who wants to SELL THESE TO RICH CONSUMERS.
Of course he wants it to be seen. He wants everybody with the cash to blow to see exactly what they're getting. It also mentions that these units will be customized to the individual client, which -would- take acoustics into account.
Instead of being a judgemental wanna-be socialist, why not try doing a little background before accusing somebody of the biggest waste of money you've ever seen? - rnelsonee, on 02/10/2008, -1/+14"He could even have an actual theater room created, with cinema type seats, professional projector and a complete THX sound setup"
Um, he does have an "actual theater room" created. With a professional projector. And a complete THX sound setup. And as for the seats? $10 says that leather couch is more comfortable than the last theater seat you were in.
Waste of money? Possibly. But none of us have $6M lying around so we can't judge. People who make minimum wage would probably think my home theater is waste of money, but I don't. I just watched a movie on there 10 minutes ago and enjoyed every minute of it. - JoeRW, on 02/11/2008, -4/+2Its quite pathetic when you think of how much better a $100000 vr headset is. 3d just blows 2d away and ps3 is going to be incorportating 3d soon. The sound would be better though, but I have trouble discerning the difference between 128kbps and 192 kbps streams.
- finalcut, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1I have a feeling you would detect the difference between 128kpbs and that setup :O) Though, when it comes to MP3s I'm like you (no audiophile).

- rawheadrex, on 02/11/2008, -1/+2The thing that bugs me the most about the photo are the huge shelves full of media (LP/EPs? CDs?) behind the speakers that have to totally ***** the acoustics of this room. In terms of the amps, if the guy has money to burn, then sure, an amp per speaker is fine. But laying them out like that just reeks of showoff, while creating a hugely distracting clutter. The most important factor of a theater like this is the level of immersion that can be attained. Optimally, you should only be able to see the screen, suspended in mid-air, and nothing else whatsoever. The display of amps, speakers, and spotlights completely defeat this purpose. THAT is why this is money wasted, not necessarily because he has redundant equipment.

- Tiesto, on 02/10/2008, -2/+4Agreed, I cry foul! There is NO way all the cables are THAT hidden, look at the control rack where the PS3 is, there is nothing but a few power leads you can see trailing behind.

- maxsunset, on 02/11/2008, -0/+3I'm positive they were just removed for the photos. This is a demonstration room, where equipment is often swapped out and adjusted, so having everything out in the open like that is not going to be all that pretty, but that's not the point. The point is to sell the gear and services. So, while the room and gear are certainly impressive to see, the cables are probably not to most people (wives). It would certainly be interesting to see how it looks with everything hooked up, however.
- zambuka, on 02/11/2008, -1/+0I very much doubt the cables were removed for the photos. A set up like this requires some serious planning and work to wire it up.
Not to mention it would take some serious power infrastructure to drive that ring of McIntosh amps. The whole setup would just take far to long to disassemle and reassemble just for the sake of a couple of photos.
Besides, you can actually see the cabling running to the left and the right speakers, red for the set on the left of the second image and black for the right (you can just make it out in the mid right of that image). You can also just make out the cabling in image 6 at the base of the shelves. So while some of the equipment is actually hooked up the rest isn't. Basically the ring of McIntosh amps looks to be there purely for show as do a lot of the additional speakers. - dignation, on 02/11/2008, -1/+1I guess that some of the speakers are just there for show.

- maxsunset, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1They are likely being used to bi, or tri-amp each speaker. The subs might also not be self-powered, needing external amplification. All those McIntosh amps are only stereo amps, which can be bridged to mono, which also might explain so many amps.
- Tiesto, on 02/10/2008, -0/+25Glad im not his neighbour.
- Gravey9, on 02/10/2008, -1/+10so is he
- Spudster, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4He's probably in a very nice neighborhood. I wouldn't mind.
- Gravey9, on 02/10/2008, -1/+10so is he
- newdigger, on 02/10/2008, -2/+8The collective view of this setup on AVSForums is a complete and total waste of money. And I agree, the acoustics of that room are absolutely atrocious.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=99 ...- maxsunset, on 02/11/2008, -1/+4and a bunch of jealous forum posters are likely to know how all the acoustics are set up by looking at photos of the room on the internet...
- newdigger, on 02/11/2008, -1/+1Clearly not regular AVSer...
- maxsunset, on 02/11/2008, -1/+4and a bunch of jealous forum posters are likely to know how all the acoustics are set up by looking at photos of the room on the internet...

- JorgeGT, on 02/10/2008, -0/+2And after I had the (horrible) economics exam, I find an amusing application of that "law". Thanks.
- maxsunset, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1That's not the point. This is obviously not a value based system, so why judge it like that? Ultimates are never cheap...
- diggdiggerid, on 02/10/2008, -6/+14well someone has no life. with that kind of money you could go places and do fun stuff, not just sit in front of a television all day long.
- samdu, on 02/10/2008, -3/+6He could be doing awesome things like, oh, posting on Digg...
- maxsunset, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Again, this is not a personal system. It is being used to demonstrate the equipment for sale. It's also being used to see how far the boundaries of home theater can be pushed. This guy is likely far more active than you, you lonely digger...
- dignation, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1I'm sure he has a good chunk of change left over.
- colinbrady, on 02/10/2008, -11/+4projector? fail.
http://googlesightseeing.com/maps?p=1278&c=&t=k&hl ... - D3koy, on 02/10/2008, -1/+221 couch? I guess this guy doesn't expect company...
- supersteve, on 02/10/2008, -1/+7the setup is his only friend
- Ramble, on 02/10/2008, -3/+5'Tis very nice and all, but a huge waste when you consider nothing will ever utilise that to the full.
- Synthesize, on 02/10/2008, -1/+7Someone is jealous...
- H0ns, on 02/10/2008, -1/+8Can I come over?
- MalDON, on 02/10/2008, -11/+18That isn't, by far, the best setup ever. Anyone can buy an ass load of speakers. Doesn't mean it will sound any better than my 7.1 setup at my house.
On another note, I think those home theaters people models after Star Trek make this look low end.- Lukesed, on 02/10/2008, -0/+13That room is above the THX and Dolby theater standards so yes, it will sound better than your 7.1.
- h4rdcor3, on 02/10/2008, -0/+14Dude, this guy is an audio engineer. he is having peter jackson and George Lucas over to listen to his system and is thinking that they might buy one.
- ZephyrNinety, on 02/10/2008, -2/+1That could easily be turned into a recording studio/rock concert.
- mearom, on 02/10/2008, -0/+1Depends. Outside concerts = around 10000 watts for 120 db. Inside WAY lower. 100 Watts in a room like that would be pretty loud and good bass.
- JRW5061, on 02/10/2008, -8/+2DUUUUUDE!!!
- adventchild08, on 02/10/2008, -3/+4
why would he have a cable dvr, and not a sattellite...if this guy is such an HD enthusiast he should go where the channels are.- samdu, on 02/10/2008, -1/+2And the quality. Cable HD looks complete ass here.
- cwestpha, on 02/10/2008, -5/+23I see quite a bit of wasted money there.
1) two blueray players (the sony dedicated one and a PS3, with the PS3 being the only one future proof)
2) The ML DVD/CD media player. Even though both the HD DVD player is an excellent up-converting DVD player.
3) I wont even go into the redundant audio processors. With all of those amps and audio processors it will be a bitch to properly calibrate them. That and your wasting a lot of power just to turn the speakers down. If he were smart he could half all of the equipment, get the same audio quality, and save lots of money on running that thing.- twishart, on 02/10/2008, -3/+22But his penis wouldn't be nearly as large.
- RustyJ, on 02/10/2008, -2/+0so true.
- NSResponder, on 02/10/2008, -2/+7Ah, but you misunderstand his goals. There is a certain class of consumer for whom the amount of money spent is the whole point. This guy probably cares far more about being in a magazine than actually watching movies or listening to music.
-jcr- Serris, on 02/10/2008, -3/+5He's a salesman! For *****'s sakes, do none of you read? He's trying to sell these things, and this is a tech demo! Christ!
- twishart, on 02/10/2008, -3/+22But his penis wouldn't be nearly as large.
- DanielNielsen, on 02/10/2008, -0/+38Electric bill must be around the 6 million mark too
- iliketuna, on 02/10/2008, -2/+24I'd be scared to bring coke and popcorn in to that room
- natergin, on 02/10/2008, -0/+6and cake!
- pingoart, on 02/10/2008, -5/+9The cake is a lie.
- Starviper, on 02/11/2008, -3/+1Ahhh...
This was a Triumph.
- Starviper, on 02/11/2008, -3/+1Ahhh...
- christophelyon, on 02/10/2008, -5/+5But it's so delicious and moist...
- pingoart, on 02/10/2008, -5/+9The cake is a lie.
- dignation, on 02/11/2008, -0/+2Yeah, it would so ruin the acoustics of the room.
- natergin, on 02/10/2008, -0/+6and cake!
