ha
ha - FRANKeB, on 10/10/2007, -4/+25Right after a price drop too. Man I can't wait to add the PS3 to my modded console collection.
- nexus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18Who would be dumb enough to post about it publicly before the exploit is finished? This means sony can have a chance to patch it up now before they get the homebrew working.
- rick2k, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Im not worried about messing with my psp but i can see sony going ***** when people start screwing with the ps3.
- malkir, on 10/10/2007, -5/+17Most of the time != all of the time.
- Skitals, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13This has pretty much been debunked.... about a week ago. I think these "leet hacking sites" just want traffic. This is no exploit or buffer overflow. It is simply an invalid TIFF file that the PS3 continues to try to read until you remove the card. I find it hilarious that because of this people think you will be able to swap in a burnt game.
- UPGR4Y3DD, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12If you have to burn the game to a blu-ray disk, it will be very expensive/pointless to burn a backup. If you boot off of the hard drive, then is could be cool.
- kingfoot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8how many console sales does it take for you to consider Sony to be "selling some hardware"?
considering they have sold over 6 million. - kenvsryu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6All speculation.
- iamsamsamiam, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11if you remember back in the day when DVD burners were really freaking expensive and so were the blank media. And there were still bootleg DVD ps2 games floating around, but they were at like almost the full price of the game. But then again i live in a city with a high chinese population so the pirated game industry is very familiar to me.
- graemee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Actually guys, XBMC would not need a exploit to run. It would compile under Yellow dog Linux that you can already run on a PS3. Yes, VLC works too. Except for one thing. XBMC makes use of the GPU/directx that will require a major port from xbox dev kit to linux. IIRC someone already had a test compile done but I'm not sure it worked very well.
The "exploit" is not so much about running unsigned code as it is running game backups. - elsJake, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6if this thing pops up i might consider actually buying one
say bye bye hypervisor , say hello unrestricted CPU/GPU access - nukem996, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6When I was into gaming much more I always burned a copy of the game I legally bought and used that. I went through at least 5 Starcraft Brood War backups but because I still have the original I can still play it.
- scabbers, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The hypervisor just called, he told you to shut up.
Vera said that? - cramd, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Sounds like Vancouver to me.
- Azriel7, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I am more interested in this being used in a xbmc for ps3. Playing my vids in HD without DRM stopping it would be a dream come true.
- TheTjalian, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4It's not about overloading the cell processor, it's about ***** over the implementation of TIFF files in the XMB to allow unsigned code to run.
- KyleMistry, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4It's like duct taaape, on your PS3!
Like 3 red liiiights, with an extended warranty!
It's the modded consooole, that the firmware did break!
And who would've thought? It figuuures! - Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I am more interested in the homebrew possiblities of this (and region-unlocking of ps1/ps2 games) than the bootleg implications.
- Tiak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You can use all cores (if you are capable of using all cores, as programs that use 9 non-interdependent threads are a bit rare), just not the GPU.... There is no evidence that any arbitrary code this may eventually run won't have similar limitations...
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Marked as inaccurate. Story conflates homebrew with piracy. Sony already has Linux for PS3. That's homebrew. If they close this hole, it would be to stop piracy, but unlike what the article says, it wouldn't crush all PS3 homebrew.
- macromorgan, on 10/10/2007, -5/+8There's already a widely known exploit to run unsigned code on the PS3. It's called the "Install Other OS" method. I've heard that hackers have already been able to get Linux to run on it!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Hi, this is 2007. It was explained about 8 years ago that copying isn't stealing.
Kindly shut the ***** up and see your way out of this site. Thank you. - bocaJWho, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's a discussion from 2006 - I fail to see the relevance.
- CLShortFuse, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3The exploit has already been used to allow PSX backups to play via a swap method. That's all so far. Maxconsole.com issued details a week ago, I think.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Uh, yeah , except the fact the updates are entirely optional.
- themacx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2meh I like the Sony updates better than the exploits... judging on PSP that is... would be nice to have a fully functioning browser on PS3 ;-)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Burning to a Blu-Ray disc isn't feasable, no.
Using the PS3's Blu-Ray drive to rip the game to the PS3's HDD, however... - smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2so were you expecting the PS3 to be the first popular gaming console console in the history of gaming to not be hacked/modded?
there are no electronics that can't be hacked or modded. hackers will always find a way to modify a device to make it work the way they want it to, especially if it's crippled by the manufacturer. i'm sure the PS1 & PS2 have already taught Sony this.
this should have been completely expected. frankly anyone who's at all surprised by this has got to be either incredibly naive or just plain stupid. - fadetoone, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2What's not expensive about it? Assuming you go the burning route, last I ever saw, a blu-ray burner was $1000, and I couldn't even tell you what the discs cost...
If some of the games can fit on DVDs (and DVDs can even be read as PS3 games), that's one thing, but once the games start getting bulkier, yes it would be expensive. - smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1so, saying that this allows people to play backups is oversimplification because _some_ people use it to pirate games, yet even though clearly many people here truly are interested in being able to play backups and run homebrew it's ok for you to say that the content of this thread is just about piracy, and piracy alone? use selective reasoning much?
but your logical inconsistency is only superseded by your ignorance. piracy is _not_ stealing as you are not depriving anyone of anything. - sukimashita, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Out of memory libtiff handler ;)
- elsJake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i undestand fully what it means , rewriteing it from scratch to be unrestrictive or rewriting all drivers to use the actual hardware.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I dunno about that - the kernel only recognizes 2 of the 9 (or 8, I forget how many it has).
- Ocelot13, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2avalaunch sucks. xbmc FTW!!!1!!!!....and how would a linux distro be like avalaunch? avalaunch was event linux.
- voyvf, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3fair use, buddy. i don't care if a bunch of wankers are stealing games - i want to back up my multiple $60+ investments.
- Ocelot13, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i mean wasnt even linux
- anonymous666, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Have you tried "sort by date (show all)" AND "show all threads"?
- o0joshua0o, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1How long does it take to download a game with 10 gb of sound data alone?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I always though that stealing was taking something that isn't yours but I don't have to justify theft to myself, so whatever gets you through the day is good.
- rootstyle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think you don't understand what the hypervisor does, and why full out *disabling it* isn't an option, even on the 360.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2dude, take your ritalin and calm the ***** down.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Don't you have some DVDs to rip and burn? Go play your mod chipped Xbox son.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1technically all copies are illegal copies, but why shouldn't game owners have the right to back up their games, especially if they can't ask for a new disc if their old one gets scratched?
and just because it can also be used to run pirated games doesn't mean it's _only_ used for pirated games. that's just plain stupid. you sound brainwashed by the RIAA/MPAA. - Cyber_Akuma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Funny, people had no problem bypassing the hypervisor and having full access with a previous Xbox360 hack.
- Skitals, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That turned out to be completely hoaxed. The "backup" PS1 game was just another original. You don't need to use this "exploit" to swap an original game in this manner.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yea, that makes no sense. what does one have to do with the other? just because someone's figured out a way to run unsigned code on the PS3, Sony won't be able to create useful firmware updates? or would they stop to screw over their users out of spite?
maybe if others like you would all stop acting like such tools Sony would stop making a habit of screwing over consumers. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I like my PS3 and I think it will be a sad day when Sony stops adding features to it through their generously regular system firmware updates and instead uses that opportunity to just patch the operating system to stay ahead of the pirates.
Way to go. A hacked console is so much better. - ausfahrt, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2What happened to my comments and how can i fix it. I changed the setting in my profile to expand all, thinking that it meant to load the page with all threads fully expanded but now they're are just all expanded with no nesting and no order. I have tried all of the different setting and cant fix it. Does anyone know how to fix this.
As for this "exploit" i agree that even if it were something to be exited about that you would have to be able to run games from the HDD or it would be expensive to just be burning games on blu-ray all the time. Expensive but still cheaper than buying, with the added benefit of being able to backup your Terabytes of porn, music and movies much move efficiently. Possible consuming the same data transfer time but you could just set it and forget it for while. - ddobson, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1That's an oversimplification -- copying your OWN library for your OWN archival purposes is legal. Copying it, then selling or returning the original is NOT. I don't disagree that the disc-based distribution model is becoming archaic, but if you're not somehow purchasing a license to use the content, then you ARE stealing because you're not paying the creators to enjoy the fruits of their labors.
I'm not suggesting that you yourself endorse piracy, but it's clear from the content of this thread that a lot of people are looking for an exploit to enable that and that alone. Not homebrew, not development, not backups-to-keep-the-original-pristine, but playing games without paying for the privilege. -
