PS3 - 20m units - 27 months = 740740 units / month - Alchemist11, on 02/05/2009, -6/+83Why would it be bad news? Definitely good news. As far as I'm concerned, the starting of the PS3 (the first year) was its worst thus far. and probably will be its worst. The reason they kept losing money on it was because they had to keep the technology for the next 10 years (just as the PS2 has been out for about 10 and still releasing new games).
I hope (and it should) continue to get better and better.
Also, I freakin' get annoyed at people hating on any one system. They're all decent now. Just let it be, and let people buy what they want. - finalflash05, on 02/06/2009, -12/+67Sony really dropped the ball on advertising the PS3, i mean Xbox ads are literally everywhere.
Case example: Me who bought a PS3 a last month didnt know it could do half the things it could, ie surf web, play pretty much every movie format, upgrade HDD and so on till I actually went and bought one. Sony should really have advertised the PS3 as a total media centre and one of the best blue ray players on the market. Sony let Microsoft win on the advertising front and really this year they should push the all in one media device rather than a simple games machine image. - spacebuddy, on 02/06/2009, -7/+60PS3 is an awesome little machine.
- Gloogle, on 02/06/2009, -3/+56Make it 20,000,001 I just bought a PS3 half an hour ago.
- Lososaurus, on 02/06/2009, -14/+64What you clownshoes conveniently forgot is that the 360 launched about a year before the PS3 and Wii, the PS3 also launched around the same time as the Wii and a trend towards casual games occurred.
So 28 million units with year's headstart and no other competition versus 20 million in the thick of a trend away from your console and a direct competitor having already established itself in the market?
Pretty good if you ask me. - mobislink, on 02/05/2009, -23/+70I'm not sure if this is good news or bad news but I want the PS3 to succeed because I brought one an I want them to continue to make good games for it. Let the fangirls start the flame war.
- anexanhume, on 02/06/2009, -3/+49Good. We should want all consoles to have strong sales to ensure competitiveness in this generation AND the coming one.
- Arkanjal, on 02/06/2009, -31/+75Wow, with Sony selling an extra 23000 units/month....it will only take another 347 months to tie with the Xbox!
- crownedgriffin, on 02/06/2009, -2/+46*Cuddles with his Dreamcast in the corner*
- Dignan666, on 02/06/2009, -0/+35Make it 27,999,999. My 360 just went RRoD.
- UselessTrivia, on 02/06/2009, -7/+38They're just ***** video game consoles people...buy the one that has the games you like. 90% of the games come out for both anyway.
- FredFredrickson, on 02/06/2009, -17/+47Just 28 more years guys!
- chaosblade77, on 02/06/2009, -2/+31What? This is the Internet. Your Internet Score goes up if you like one console and hate the other two with ever fiber of your being. I am also under the impression you get bonus points if the Wii is one of those two consoles.
- inactive, on 02/06/2009, -3/+30I LOVE MY PS3....in my opinion it is the single greatest entertainment center ever made (besides a PC). Slapped a 250 gig hdd in it and put all my movies, tv shows, even p90x on it. Whenever i work out now its using my HDTV in my living room and not my laptop.... and i got the Killzone 2 demo yesterday :)....I love the thing.
- Lososaurus, on 02/06/2009, -1/+23I don't even own a PS3, hell, I own a 360 and a Wii, but I can see that it's doing well against an environment that's certainly not helping it.
- kingmanic, on 02/06/2009, -3/+25pffft a launch 360 can do that too. just put 2 slices of toast on top of it and wait.
- leif777, on 02/06/2009, -8/+29sonyfanboy: blah blah blah PS3 is better
360fanboy: blah blah blah no the 360 is better
me: ...*yawn* - hotjava23, on 02/06/2009, -2/+21My PS3 proved to be a great purchase for my family, my learned how to operate the thing just to watch her photos on our HD tv.
- 7m7uf, on 02/06/2009, -2/+19The PS3 is a good system. It's solid, i've never had a problem with it once. However i do have some gripes. I really really really want PlayTV here in the US - it's a heartbreaking tease not being able to have it. I would like more exclusive games. but most of all i would like a nice price drop, just so other people can justify purchasing it.
But i like how they keep updating it, it's powerful, has a lot of nifty features and it's just a well built machine.
P.S.
I want a follow up to ICO & Shadow NOW! - scottinks, on 02/06/2009, -2/+19Sony may have taken a big hit on the PS3, but what they achieved was putting the nail in the coffin of HD-DVD. Blu-Ray won and the PS3 was a big factor in that win. Sony is bound to profit from it.
- kingmanic, on 02/06/2009, -1/+18Good PS3 game out recently:
Valkeria Chronicles. Resistance 2. Killzone 2(soon). Little big planet. latest Motorstorm iteration. And all of the AAA titles have a PS3 version.
For me the biggest draw is the flexibility of getting linux. Still working on getting the sixaxis to work properly with SNES9express and gmame but when it does it's much better than the wii for playing older SNES/NES/genesis/TG16 games that I own. I don't have to pay $5-$20 to do so. The fact online is free helps although it's not as heavily populated as Live it's also less populated by 15 year kids with tourettes.
full disclosure: I own a wii, a 360, a ps3, a psp, a few PC's and a ds. working on making a arcade stand up and buyign a few arcade boards. I think I'm pretty close to hardware agnostic. - TVarmy, on 02/06/2009, -0/+16I'm curious. What games in particular are the draw to the PS3 these days? I don't have an Xbox, so you can include things that aren't exclusive. I like how the PS3 does more out of the box, but I also like how the Xbox is $200 cheaper.
And from what I hear, the Cell chip isn't even being entirely used by most games, so it could get really interesting in the future if developers learn to use it better. - kingmanic, on 02/06/2009, -0/+15FredFredrickson:
"360 has more RAM"
No. They have the same amount of CPU accessible ram but the PS3 has an odd split and uses two sets of ram with different clock speeds (256MB ddr3 256MB XDR). The 360 has one bank which both the GPU and CPU can access giving more flexibilty. The xenon has a 1mb l2 cache while the cell has 512kb of l2 cache and 256kb of sram for the SPE's to use as well as local cache's on the SPE.
The GPU's are slightly different with the RSX being a faster chip but with more bottle necks while the Xenos has a interesting universal shader system but each shader is slower than the ones on the RSX.
Overall it means that initially you have to be brilliant to make a PS3 game look and perform better than on the 360 in the first and second generation of games but as the tools and compilers get better the PS3 will certainly outshine the 360. However they are both in the region of diminishing returns on the computer power curve so 10% more power may not be easily noticed. Which may link back to the idea that they are very similar. But the details of what they do well are different. The 360 is easy on the developers but it's just about maxed out now. The Ps3 is a nightmare for early developers but has more long term potential. Most of that power will show in environment complexity over graphic juice as graphics are pretty much a deep diminishing return. - DarkStryke, on 02/06/2009, -2/+16It could also mean price hold and they actually stop hemorrhaging money on every hardware sale.
- sugarazor, on 02/06/2009, -2/+16And having a headstart is why the Dreamcast sold more units than all other consoles last generation.
- DanteDefiance, on 02/06/2009, -7/+19Sweet. I read yesterday that they will start producing PS3's with cheaper Cell chips. To me that spells Price Drop!
I'll be picking up my PS3 this year for sure. - mediamaker, on 02/06/2009, -2/+14wow awesome site, thank you!
- Alchemist11, on 02/06/2009, -0/+12The PS3's. To it's potential. Right this second, when they don't know how to fully utilise the PS3's hardware, they'd be about the same.
- mobislink, on 02/06/2009, -3/+14I'm not sure what pain you are talking about. I do enjoy having a PS3 and have no regrets. I'm sure Xbox360 owners feel the same way. The only pain I feel is the annoyance of console fangirls posting mindless comments.
- freakstyle571, on 02/06/2009, -2/+13again? Didn't the PS2 crush everything last generation?
- Gino86, on 02/06/2009, -3/+14^ This... i have to admit i was realy surprised when my PS3 Made me toast in the morning.
- freakstyle571, on 02/06/2009, -3/+14I have all 3 systems too and the only one that actually gets turned on anymore is the PS3. The Xbox was great for a while but after a couple RRoD its not even worth fixing to play the few shooters I have for it. (Gears, Halo, Left for Dead). And the Wii was great for about a month until the gimmick wore off. We got tired of playing Mario Kart, Mario Party, Mario Tennis, Wii Sports.
/Anecdotal evidence - altgeeky1, on 02/06/2009, -1/+12Microsoft can win any cash-burn war.. X-Box development is not a self-funded entity. X-box development is funded by sales of Microsoft Office and Vista. The idea is to outlast Sony, and consume their oxygen supply.
Sony can not be suckered into Microsoft's rules of price cuts and ad blitzes. After Sony determines that everyone who wants one @ the current price has bought, then the price drops.
I'm sure it's infuriating if you're stuck really wanting one, but everyone knows about the $100 off PS3 offer if you get the Sony/Chase card... - TVarmy, on 02/06/2009, -0/+10Ah, that's true about MGS, I really do want to play it. I have a Wii and I set up the homebrew channel so it can emulate most pre-32bit systems, and I installed a backup loader for games Nintendo released at ridiculous prices that never went down. No way I'm paying $50 for Metroid Prime Corruption when it came out two years ago.
- AlexWiggy, on 02/06/2009, -5/+15http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php ^-- charts of console sales.
To be perfectly honest, arguing over these consoles is rather 2008 :p.
It's obvious there's no clear winner, they both do near enough the exact same things with same level of quality.
If you like the games on PS3 buy it, if you like the games on Xbox360 buy it. - brokencode, on 02/06/2009, -1/+11Hell yea! I use my PS3 to upload movies and songs so my friends can come over and watch. Definitely the best entertainment system available.
- jshhmr, on 02/06/2009, -2/+12I am completely non-biased on this subject, because I have neither. I have been following the console wars battle for months now and here's what I have studied. At first, all the vs. arguments were in the 360's favor. Most comments that were for the ps3 were dugg down, and the 360's were dugg up. Serveral months later, I see the opposite. It seems that many of you that used to be for the 360 got tired of the RROD BS, and switched. The ONLY answer I want, which I have yet to find, is if both consoles had a game that was absolutely maxed out graphically to their potential, whose graphics would be better?
- Rammstein2133, on 02/06/2009, -1/+11I wouldn't call it little, really.

profit - sean2390, on 02/06/2009, -1/+10Metal Gear Solid is an excellent PS3 game. Try it some time.
- inactive, on 02/06/2009, -1/+10Little? Isn't what Sony bashed MSFT about on the original XBOX?
- NipGrip, on 02/06/2009, -0/+9Yeah? And how many Tiger electronic toys are sold, might as well keep us informed on that as well. Maybe those joysticks with games built in you can get from Target for like $10 that plug straight into your TV..
- Elranzer, on 02/06/2009, -1/+9Even the Wii had WiFi built-in. Where else does a WiFi-G card cost $100 except on the Xbox 360?!
- inactive, on 02/06/2009, -0/+8Hey Panda Bear! We don't take kindly to your xbox humping types around here!
- kingmanic, on 02/06/2009, -0/+8FredFredrickson: I think the 360 still has a bit more juice in it but the divide will grow as better tools come out for the PS3. multi-platform games are a difficult benchmark as the developer is better off targeting functions and algorithms both use well to minimize development time. Its hard to compare distinct games as well as it's somewhat subjective but I'm guessing that the PS3 will have a moderate edge in environment complexity while being only slightly better graphically. The bigger capacity of the blurays and guaranteed presence of an HDD will factor into that too.
I have both and hope the competition is heated and intense so I can continue to get great games for both. Even my wii has value but I refuse to purchase nay more cheap plastic junk for it. - Whackly, on 02/06/2009, -3/+11In yet another attempt to bridge the gap. I, an owner of a 360 and veteran 360 fanboy, also want the PS3 to succeed. With Nintendo following its own path, with seeming success (I am also an owner and fan of the Wii, for purposes of disclosure) a failed PS3 would mean no direct and head-to-head competition for Microsoft. We've all seen how that works out.
- mohsenxp, on 02/06/2009, -5/+13What people fail to realise is that the PS3, given its price is definitely winning this race (against the Xbox360).
Do I care who wins? No not at all. I have a PS3 but I'm not an idiot to think I owe sony any loyalty.
But yeah, tis very impressive to see it selling so well given the competition is less than half price.
I can't remember any other product succeeding so well after the much richer competition cut its price so drastically. - TiMMY8765, on 02/06/2009, -1/+9good thing ps3 games are region-free
