- chaosblade77, on 09/12/2008, -1/+130If a game console isn't going to have some form of physical media, I'm simply not buying it. Games are too big for most people to download, and with major internet providers in the US setting bandwidth caps that's only going to further hinder gaming. Most other countries already have caps, and from what I remember, people in countries like Australia wouldn't even be able to download one game without going over their cap.
Making the move to digital distribution next generation optional is fine. Making it mandatory will hurt more than it helps though. - Kbriggs, on 09/12/2008, -3/+100Realistically this is a 2013-2014 release date for a PS4....so why are people submitting articles 3-5 years in advance?
- loganhid, on 09/12/2008, -3/+97The PS4 will be a one solution device in that you will be able to play games on it, watch movies, browse the net, download, drive it, possible live in it, cook on it, bath in it, use it as a weapon and probably if we're lucky run Crysis.
- Roblodocus, on 09/13/2008, -4/+71All this article is saying is: The PS4 will be more powerful than the PS3
Well, duuuuur!. - kinseyincanada, on 09/13/2008, -2/+55heres everything you need to know: 1. Its obviously going to come, but not for a while 2. It will have better graphics 3. There will still be fanboys.
- Kenelm, on 09/13/2008, -0/+38You mean like... a PC?
- wontstoptalking, on 09/13/2008, -2/+39Don't even expect to get leaked pics until 2012.
And please, please, please do not call the next xBox the xBox 720. I seriously doubt that is what it will be called. At least, I hope so. - quasipolymath, on 09/13/2008, -4/+34640K ought to be enough for anyone.
- bigdaddyguido, on 09/13/2008, -0/+29The author of this article is clueless. First off, blu-ray drives will be pretty cheap by 2011-2012 so there's no reason from a cost perspective to get rid of it. Additionally, a 1 TB hard drive will be considered pretty dainty by 2012 standards (and if the console is to have a lifespan of 10 years....). If they were to drop the optical drive the hard drive would have to be massively larger than just 1 TB to fit a decade worth of PS4 games and HD movies, and judging by everyone's reaction to the Big N's "store on a server, not on the console" $ony will not go that route.
Finally, Larabee drops late this year early next year, and intel has roadmapped 8 core processors to be available by that timeframe. Since you can get dual and quad processor (not core) computers, the PS4 will have to have a significant number of cell processors to compete. Basically he's ignoring the fact that all the technology he's mentioning will be several years old by 2012 and therefore not to be considered top end.
Finally, the consoles will all need to follow Nintendo's advice and develop alternate methods of controlinteraction to justify people not just using their PCs and portable devices (phones) to game. - iMike360, on 09/13/2008, -0/+27No, I'm more interested in realistic physics and more no-linear gameplay.
How cool would it be if you re playing COD and you can shoot out the lights and everything goes dark. You have night vision but the enemy is blinded. - YancyFryJr, on 09/13/2008, -2/+27"the PS3 was instrumental in helping Blu-ray beat off HD DVD"
Indeed. I doubt that Blu-ray would have been nearly as successful in beating off HD DVD without the PS3. As a matter of fact, there are a number of elements to the PS3 that are quite conducive to it beating off Microsoft and its supported platforms. Beating off. - Azohko, on 09/13/2008, -1/+25Usain Bolt could run Crysis...
- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -0/+22"With a giant hard disk in the PS4, games could simply be piped straight to the console on release day; long install/level load times would be eliminated."
Sure, with my 250GB Comcastic bandwidth limit and a few thousand people trying to all download a 40GB+ game at launch, that certainly won't be a problem - ibeetle, on 09/13/2008, -0/+19Of course Sony is working of a Playstation 4. Just as Nintendo is working on the successor to the Wii.
Game companies start working on the so called next gen system pretty much the day after the previous system is released. - Failchan, on 09/13/2008, -2/+20I just had an orgasm imagining that. And from masturbating.
- WhereAmI, on 09/13/2008, -2/+20PS2 is still selling and games are still coming out for it. Obviously not Sony's focus but if its on store shelves, its still alive.
- thedragon4453, on 09/13/2008, -1/+19It simply won't happen. Whoever said that must have just done a couple lines.
Simple math. Bluray is around 25-50gb of data, depending on single or dual layer. Comcast, one of the largest ISP's in the States just announced a 250gb cap. Other ISP's are already following suit. For them to be planning to go digital download only this soon is just nuts.
The only way the next gen console's will be download only is if the ISP market in the US suddenly does an about face and decides to actually build some infrastructure. - Failchan, on 09/13/2008, -1/+18I was going to point out how many times you said beat off...then I realised it was on purpose D:
- inactive, on 09/12/2008, -1/+16Graphics were only one of the things listed. Or are you one of those morons who think processing power only affects graphics?
- theragu40, on 09/13/2008, -1/+15If they actually call it the Xbox720 I'm going to be upset.
- maley, on 09/13/2008, -0/+14>>"While the PS3 was instrumental in helping Blu-ray beat off HD DVD, there's a strong argument for dropping an optical drive from the PS4 altogether. Console owners are already downloading gigabytes-worth of game demos, video trailers, full-length movies and TV shows. With a giant hard disk in the PS4, games could simply be piped straight to the console on release day; long install/level load times would be eliminated."
FAIL.
They will NOT make DD their only distribution channel next generation! The infrastructure in America is not in place! - mockidol, on 09/13/2008, -0/+13Store like Best Buy will never allow discsless to fly. The average system sells at cost making them no money. Best Buy makes money selling the games and such. If they have no games to sell then they have no reason to sell these companies systems.
- archivist, on 09/13/2008, -0/+12ah.. like splinter cell?
- abrasion, on 09/13/2008, -4/+16Dunno why you're getting dugg up, the PS2 may have been replaced but Sony, unlike Microsoft have continued to support the PS2, games continue to be published and while it's not a full mainstream system, a very very budget conscious (read: poor) gamer could purchase a PS2 and have a huge huge library of GOOD games to play, not just shovelware.
The PS2 is no longer a serious contender but it IS a bargain and it is selling.
Considering the cost of entry into the console wars now, the money at stake and the power of the new systems, along with the law of diminishing returns on graphics, I can damned well assure you that for a change both Sony and Microsoft would like to chill the hell out and make some money, not release a new console right now, research maybe, release hell no.
I'd be very very surprised if you saw a new console from either side within 2 years, even 3 years from now, 4 years however - likely.
Also while I'm at it - ***** good! following this console war on the web, podcasts, digg, shacknews, forum a, forum b etc for the 18 months before and the 18 months after was a goddamn nightmare, I think journalists AND gamers deserve a nice break to actually play games and get value out of their damned pricey PS3's and 360's
So, to summarise, yes Sony is still selling the PS2 and they will still hang with the PS3 for 7-8 years in total I'd guess. - inactive, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1210 years = 10 years before the system is done being produced. Which should be 2010 for the PS2. Hell, major games like RB2 and GH:WT are still coming out for it.
- lilbitmoreslyk, on 09/13/2008, -0/+11From the this generation it seems MS will be the first to release a new console followed by Sony and THEN Nintendo. But I have a feeling with the Asinine amount of money Nintendo is making off the Wii/DS, we'll see a console from them first. Especially since its got the lowest hardware specs on the market right now. I think a new hand held is due soon from Nintendo, but after a new console I think.
Also, the PS3's cell processor's potential hasn't even been tapped yet. That will take at least another couple years for developers to start making even more beastly games for it. For example Polyphony is doing a F-king amazing job utilizing the PS3 hardware (just like it did with the PS2). Therefore I think they really will stretch this sucker as long as possible. I mean its got the technology to last a decade. - Darksoul, on 09/13/2008, -1/+10Myth nothing can run Crysis.....
- Darksoul, on 09/13/2008, -3/+12Your an idiot, Sony is already doing this with full downloadable games example warhawk, tekken 5 and so on why do you think Microsoft is repackaging their old titles and releasing them for downloads ***** at least Sony is doing full on original from the ground up made games for the ps3 and not just old games from old consoles. Get your head out of your ass Microsoft isn't the only console maker out there in fact they are very new in the game.
I have fan-boys. - justice7, on 09/13/2008, -0/+9i'm going to bank on it just being called X.
- feureau, on 09/13/2008, -1/+10Xbox 720??
What're they gonna call the next Wii? Nintendo Biggus Dickus?? - dafragsta, on 09/13/2008, -0/+9okama gamesphere!
- jgtg32a, on 09/13/2008, -0/+9Yes
http://www.funnycoolstuff.com/2006/09/04/usb-cooki ... - Darksoul, on 09/13/2008, -3/+12Bitch please pick one up then talk ***** moron another person with their head up Microsoft's ass seriously do fan-boy's like you all have a meeting or something.
- GalacticRerun, on 09/13/2008, -0/+8Well that's a silly thing to say.
- inactive, on 09/13/2008, -4/+12And the xbox720 will feature FOUR red rings of death. Wow, this is exciting! :P
- seanpackage, on 09/13/2008, -2/+10Alll you NEED to know is that it will be $1000
- SreyaNotfilc, on 09/13/2008, -1/+9I highly doubt that the PS4 will have no Blu-Ray. Not everyone is hooked up to the internet, or willing to sit a while to download an entire game at a time. This could only work if they implement a service within an established store (say Walmart). You'd bring in your hard drive, purchase the game, and then go off shopping while the game is loading. If done correctly, this COULD work, but I highly doubt that people would want to do things this way. Probably the PS5 could do something like this, but I doubt the next gen consoles will do this.
- Thorpe, on 09/13/2008, -0/+8Well, I'm sure there will be an optical drive on the PS4. Sure, downloading is great but the more casual users out there, without Internet connections are just going to be very confused by this.
- chaoticz, on 09/13/2008, -2/+10The main reason I got the PS3 was for the Blu-ray. I have one game with it and I use it mostly as a DLNA server and Blu-ray Player, games are secondary to me.
Blu-ray is the main reason the Xbox 360 with it's superior game library has not completely put away the PS3.
We are not yet at the point where we can frequently download 15-30GB movies over our internet connections, especially with the companies now putting caps on how much you can download.
Bottom line is I dont think the people who wrote the article know what they are talking about. The next generation needs to have something more revolutionary to be successful, not just upgraded ram/disk/processor.
I think the next Xbox/PS3 needs to be a complete entertainment center and needs to be designed that way from the beginning. Software needs to be a major part of it, face it the Iphone is popular because of it's software, not the hardware. - bhavinp, on 09/13/2008, -1/+8Reminds me of this other device...the personal computer.
- ChayD, on 09/13/2008, -0/+7PS3's been out since 2006? It really doesn't feel like that long ago.
- MateyO, on 09/13/2008, -2/+9Dude, you're bad at math.
- ChayD, on 09/13/2008, -0/+7Double entendres FTW
I foresee some significant beating off around the PS4's launch day. - linksus, on 09/13/2008, -0/+7Couldnt agree more. Downloading games is slowly getting annoying. Im on a 20Mb connection via VirginMedia in the UK , however if i download 3Gb during the day , It gets capped to 5Mb .
This isnt normally an issue, but with something like Steam and a dead Harddrive i like to get my games again.
This can take forever.
I wish steam had a button next to each game where you can Insert a blank DVD R and hit, Write data.
This way i can insert it later, Steam picks it up and transfers the majority of data back.
Even if it meant downloading 500mb after it would save me a lot of time. - crash331, on 09/13/2008, -0/+7Yeah, after that conmment I concluded the author was a retard.
Physical media MIGHT disappear by around 2020, but even that is iffy. It definitely won't be in the next gen of gaming consoles unless they want to console to fail hard. - NightGecko, on 09/13/2008, -1/+7DVD player? Well, you've already ruled out Nintendo.
- Failchan, on 09/13/2008, -0/+6Aren't we past this ***** ProfessorSYM?
- Callik, on 09/13/2008, -1/+7WiiWii.
Pü is also acceptable. - Kuabarra, on 09/13/2008, -0/+5.... you realize 720 degrees is 2 circles meaning you would end up facing it again and running TOWARD it?
- fcrow, on 09/13/2008, -0/+5You can do that on a PS1.
