- hater2win, on 11/15/2007, -11/+410Wow. Just... wow. I think I can confidently say that Sony was right in calling this neglect. I have stuff stored in my garage that is not NEARLY that dusty. It looks like the damn thing was buried underground while he was playing it. That is a ridiculous amount of dust. That is in fact neglect.
Holy crap. - SheepLicker, on 11/15/2007, -2/+242Okay, seriously, how does a console get THAT dusty? You'd think he'd at least clean it before sending it in for repair...
- triplehelix, on 11/15/2007, -5/+242if the outside looks like that, i can't imagine what the internals look like.
- sockpuppets, on 11/15/2007, -2/+154Images of the owner were released as well, why are they being censored?
http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/thum ... - funnydale, on 11/15/2007, -3/+154If this guy spent as much time and energy with a Dustbuster as he had bitching to the consumerist this past weekend, he wouldn't have this problem, and the Consumerist wouldn't have lost much of its credibility.
- Ajajadude, on 11/15/2007, -4/+114If this guy really kept that thing in a cabinet like he said, I cringe to think what it would look like if it had been kept outside of a cabinet. The thing looks like it was thrown into a box of sawdust.
Another example of the Consumerist getting all righteous over something that has turned out to be nothing more than the end-user being a complete moron, or in this case, some douche being negligent with a $700+ dollar piece of electronics (had it for over a year, must've paid the $699 plus tax). - snobrder218, on 11/15/2007, -5/+102I'm sorry, I have problems when im around too much dust espically in the air. it is a heath problem espically if you inhale too much dust. you people need to shut up. who the hell would even have a PS3 like this? that is mistretment and abuse. you're house has to be the filthiest place ever. get a ***** swiffer.
- McGuinness, on 11/15/2007, -1/+94Agreed. My PS3 is on 24/7 and it never gets to that level. Dust isnt that color either, dust is more of a light/gray. This looks like actual DIRT!
- santasing, on 11/15/2007, -1/+92Good lord, that is filthy. No wonder the CSR freaked out. Did this guy actually tied the PS3 to his car and took off on a dirt road, a' la Motorstorm. :-D I would hate to see what his house looks like.
- Kronos6948, on 11/15/2007, -1/+86Note to Self:
Do not keep PS3 in my vacuum cleaner cannister, especially when vacuum is on. Otherwise, Sony will void my warranty. - ResonantToe, on 11/15/2007, -2/+83All one has to do is look at the vote that the consumerist has put on the bottom to see what a leading bias they have.
I mean lets be serious here, most of us (by reading) here believe that its been really badly handled, and neglected as a console, and the Sony is under no obligation to repair it.
However, most of us also believe that it would not pose a threat to every technician in the repair centre. Even discarding a few asthmatics and OCDers someone would be able to. But you bundle the two options together in a vote and you leave the majority of common sensical people thinking, well ***** I really don't agree with either statements I won't vote. So all you get is a loyal base of consumerists voting that Sony should fix it and the Consumerist editorial staff feel really good about themselves.
Skewing poll results? Someone else does that I heard? - Responder656, on 11/15/2007, -2/+83It has only been a year since the PS3 was actually released.
How did it end up like that already? - ShugNinx21, on 11/15/2007, -1/+57My question is: If he thinks that his PS3 had a normal amount of dust for 8 months of use, then what would he consider too dusty?
I would be embarrassed if any of my consoles looked like that after 5 years, let alone 8 months... - gotcheaprice, on 11/15/2007, -0/+54Man, it could be a ps3 commercial. Motorstorm, so realistic, it brings dirt to your living room.
- BinaryFragger, on 11/15/2007, -0/+45What the *****...
My old black PS2 Slim has been sitting on a open shelf in my living room since summer 2005 and it looks almost new. How did this guy's PS3 get so filthy this quick?
I shudder to think what his ***** looks like. - deadbaby, on 11/15/2007, -2/+45Dupe.
Excessive dust, heat, moisture, etc will void your warranty on many devices. It's been a well known fact for decades that people living in certain climates without good environmental control will often be denied warranty service. It's a standard part of any warranty repair process to check for these things. As for the PS3 being a "dust magnet" it is a shinny black device --- of course the outside gets dusty. There's nothing unique about the air intake system so that doesn't really translate to the internals of the device. - one2gamble, on 11/15/2007, -0/+42thats pretty much neglect. Its similar to not changing the oil in your car and then getting pissed when it blows up.
- nsell, on 11/15/2007, -2/+43Dugg for "get a ***** swiffer"
...Classic. - evozero, on 11/15/2007, -0/+40did this guy empty his vacuum all over his ps3? wow...
- Schmapdi, on 11/15/2007, -1/+40Yeah, I'm going to have to go with Sony on this one. That's his own fault - and it's not like he can't clean dust out on his own.
- Calcularius, on 11/15/2007, -0/+38That's totally nasty!
I would hate to see that dude's house, must be a sty.
You don't deserve to own anything nice if you can't take care of it. - mythicflux, on 11/15/2007, -1/+39He claimed he did.
- TheAcclaimed, on 11/15/2007, -0/+33What a dick. This guy claimed he cleaned it and everything, and from the recording he sounded like a normal guy. But WTF happened to that PS3? I no longer support his cause. Smart move on Sony's end. They knew this was giving them a bad image, but now people can see that they were quite right in calling this neglect.
- krische, on 11/15/2007, -0/+33Uh, he sent it to them and they took these pictures to prove their point that they aren't going to repair his neglect.
- lordzelo, on 11/15/2007, -0/+31From my experience(I worked as a tech support guy at an ISP for 6 years) fixing computers, electronic devices don't get that dirty unless the owner is 1) a smoker and 2) they have animals in the house. I do website dev now but the tech guys got a computer in today that was the dirtiest that I have EVER seen. We're talking 1inch thick dust in the bottom of the case... I don't even know how the fans still managed to spin or why this computer hadn't overheated. The intake holes on the power supply were so filled with dust you couldn't even tell the holes were there. The only way something gets this dirty is by the person not taking care of it at all. Any smart person knows that dust = broken when it comes to stuff like this. Get off your trash and clean your junk. I'm with Sony on this one.
- affanjam, on 11/15/2007, -0/+30What if he lives in a mine.
- xthroughmyeyesx, on 11/15/2007, -1/+30Seriously, screw whoever thinks Sony is wrong in this matter. I wouldn't touch that *****. My room gets mad dusty but that unit looks like it was INTENTIONALLY dusted on.
- modsuperstar, on 11/15/2007, -0/+29I'm not a Sony booster, but I have to agree with them on this one. Only a moron would send in a machine in this state of disrepair and expect it to be covered under warranty. I think it's a good rule no matter what the product that you should clean it and make it look as good as possible before shipping it back to the company. A few nicks and scratches are one thing. Letting that amount of dust collect on a $700 piece of hardware shows you don't take care of your stuff and probably should be rightfully refused when it comes to warranty coverage.
The health risk thing was a bit over the top, but then again it wouldn't be a Sony story without some type of PR blunder. - Ajajadude, on 11/15/2007, -0/+29Well, if that's true, then I hope this guy has a maid to clean his pad
- BobCock, on 11/15/2007, -0/+28dust is an accumulation of skin particles and hair and a little bit of dirt, but that ps3 is ***** DIRTY. dirt. it looks like it was played in a wood shed.
- santasing, on 11/15/2007, -4/+32The thing is there will always be some negative PR about Sony by people who feel threatened by the fact that a piece of electronic equipment is doing well. Sony can not, and should not just hand out freebies. I say good for Sony for throwing this douchebag's claim out.
- inactive, on 11/15/2007, -1/+27It looks like he was using the PS3 as a bong.
- santasing, on 11/15/2007, -2/+28How about $150 for a tech to go in with a face mask and an air compressor to clean that thing out. Things cost money you know. And as the comment below states, if this lazy person had just dusted off his PS3 before sending it in, all of this would have been avoided.
- Cam_86, on 11/15/2007, -0/+26Yeah, i'm pretty sure he broke the PS3 doing something stupid, and thought he could pull a fast one on the sony repair team by making it LOOK like it was brought on by dust. Unless hes got it in the same room as a sand blaster, there is no way it should have accumulated that much dust in one year. I'm not a big fan of sony, and they way they run their business, but i think they were in the right in this situation.
- scabbers, on 11/15/2007, -0/+25I have join with the dark side of the force for this one.
- mythicflux, on 11/15/2007, -3/+28The Consumerist has credibility? I always assumed they were a troll infested soap box pushing an agenda of protecting everyone from the evil corporations who only lie.
- j4200, on 11/15/2007, -1/+25A warrenty covers manufacturing defects. End user being a slob is in no way the manufacturer's responsibility
- Eldorian, on 11/15/2007, -0/+24The dude needs to clean his ***** up before he bitches.
Seriously, if his PS3 looks that bad can you imagine what his living quarters probably looks like? - HydrogenOxide, on 11/15/2007, -1/+24Dude, My PS3 Has a 1x0.8x1 foot "slot" in my custom made entertainment center shelf, it is on most of the day (if not playing, folding) AND IT STILL ISNT AS DUSTY AS THAT. Jesus Christ, I've seen cleaner stuff in my garage. Digg me down, but if I worked for Sony I would reject it as soon as I saw it. If thats the outside, god knows what got filtered through the fans and ***** up the internals. No wonder you were getting Disk Read Errors.
- TheNik, on 11/15/2007, -0/+22I wouldn't reject it because of "technician health reasons" - I would reject it because that's plain neglect. That dust is undoubtedly what broke his PS3. ***** should clean his damn house.
- Ajajadude, on 11/15/2007, -0/+22My PS3 has already put in a lot of time for the relatively short period of time I've owned it (about 7-8 months) and it doesn't look anything like that. Hell, I keep mine out in the open and not in a cabinet and it looks almost pristine. This guy claims he kept his PS3 in a cabinet. *****. If he kept it in a cabinet, how'd it get to look like he strapped it to the back of a motorcycle and rode around town for a few hours?
Oh, and it's impossible for him to have been running folding@home for a year straight. It hasn't even been out that long. - Makasuro, on 11/15/2007, -0/+22That's ridiculous, that thing is dusty as hell no wonder it failed. And he was making the huge ruckus over that? OMG what a douche.
- X18999, on 11/15/2007, -0/+21So he must have a few corps lying around.
- pencilneck, on 11/15/2007, -2/+23If that is the actual unit, then I'll side with Sony on now covering it under warranty, but it is a bit silly to say the dust "presented a threat to their technician's health". I guess if the tech was going to lick it clean instead of using a shop vac.
Ironic is how the owner of that PS3 stopped smoking 2 years ago for health reasons. - Rileyper, on 11/15/2007, -2/+23I call void on this machine just from the look of it... If that isn't neglect then i hope you drop your expensive ipods
- vinn, on 11/15/2007, -0/+21Why cant you clean your PS3 and take care of it? Its like buying a car but never changing its oil.
- bpwrinn, on 11/15/2007, -0/+20This takes the term "sitting on a shelf, collecting dust" to a whole new level.
- KMye, on 11/15/2007, -0/+20And just as importantly, how did he not choose to at least wipe off the outside before sending it in??
- DarthBrady, on 11/15/2007, -2/+21damn. either they pulled that thing from a construction site dumpster, or it got gang-banged by a few 360's in a mud wrestling pit. MY 25 YEAR OLD NES looks better than that.
- apoc06, on 11/15/2007, -1/+20thats not dust, thats DIRT. it looks like he put his ps3 in a sandbox or something. the fingerprints underneath are normal, but the big fingerprint on the front of the card reader is nothing but dirt.
seriously how do you get "dust" all the way /inside/ the card reader and the blu-ray slot? -
