- Morac, on 06/11/2009, -4/+82What's weird is people seem to be split on the PSP Go. Some say they'll definitely be getting it and others say the definitely won't.
At $250 I can't see why anyone would buy the PSP Go, when for the same price they could get a regular PSP, a 16 GB Memory Stick PRO Duo and a game. Add the fact that it actually costs Sony less to make a PSP Go then a regular PSP, the thing has a smaller screen and none of the existing PSP peripherals will work with the Go and you wonder why any one would be jumping to get the PSP Go.
Now if Sony bundles a few games with it, it might be worth it. - Kbriggs, on 06/11/2009, -6/+25The PSP Go seems like a great idea. Small enough to fit into your back pocket, and from what the reviews say it is comfortable in your hands, and feels natural. I already own a PSP, and would love to get this one instead. AT $250 though I do not see myself upgrading for at least a year or two.
- RagManX, on 06/11/2009, -12/+27Thanks Morac. That sums up all the thoughts I've had on the PSP Go, as well. I can't understand why anyone would be buying this. Still haven't found anyone who can tell me why this would be worth buying.
- dsmx, on 06/12/2009, -0/+13It has the same cpu.
- MrFisty, on 06/12/2009, -0/+13MGS Portable Ops > MGS Touch
- Dragular, on 06/12/2009, -2/+14This ***** kills me. I was the biggest fanboy for Sony in the PS2 era, remember coming to near-fistfights in middle school for Sony in the PS1 vs. N64 arguments.... and it's like they've gone ***** insane since the PS2. First the, "here, finally, is the network adapter. NOW HERE'S A NEW VERSION OF THE SYSTEM THAT IT WON'T WORK WITH HAHA!" debacle, then the entire ***** that was the PS3 launch (protip: if your system is going to cost more than the competitor and come out a year later, you better have something better than RIIIIDGE RACER)... now they're taking the PSP, which for some reason I held out hope for, stripping features out of it, making it even more awkward-sized, and jacking up the price.
Sony... whahappent!? I miss you guys. Come back to us, over here in the land of the sane. - bigbadgoat, on 06/12/2009, -1/+13My biggest gripe with my PSP was its awkward dimension that made it horrible to carry around. It doesn't fit comfortably in anything but a winter coat pocket, so when I was on the go, it stayed home because I had nowhere to put it. The PSP Go changes all that, it has a form factor that appeals much more to me. It has 16 gigs + a memory stick port, so I can expand it even further, and take all the games I want with me without having to carry anything else around.
And it couldn't have looked like that. That isn't a practical design, at all. Do you realize how much a design like that would cost? People complain about the $250 price tag, that thing would cost $400-500 easily. - AL7AIR, on 06/12/2009, -0/+11The CPU is the same 1-333MHz you'll find in the PSP-1000 to PSP-3000. They did however upgrade the device with Bluetooth and internal memory, but they downgraded it in regards of the screen, and installed a proprietary connector which replaces the standard mini USB 2.0, for data connection and charging. Furthermore the video out functionality moved to that port as well so the component cables from the existing model with its 3.5mm connector wont work either. The 3.5mm audio port is still present though, if you don't want to pair a wireless headset with the device. And they switched from their Memory Stick Pro Duo to their M2 format, and not to the more commonly used card type (micro)SD, which the guys over at Sony Ericsson did a couple of weeks ago for all their phones from here on out.
- ShingoEX, on 06/12/2009, -2/+13"Sony had the perfect reason to finally add that 2nd analog nib damn near every PSP owner was screaming at them to put in"
No, they didn't. You need games that support it, and for a system that's supposed to co-exist with the PSP, you'd be fracturing the software between both platforms. - CoD4, on 06/12/2009, -1/+1116gb isn't much if you're gonna download a lot of games and have music and movies on your system
any other options? - InfernoX, on 06/12/2009, -1/+10Potentially removing the UMD drive = longer battery life.
- DarkShroud, on 06/12/2009, -0/+9The PSP 2000 & newer have Skype, the go even has Blu-tooth support. In short with the PSP you don't even need a phone. And if you need a phone for work you'd have a Blackberry anyway.
- Royish, on 06/12/2009, -2/+11The real question is how well will homebrew and emulators work on it?
I assume Sony will be making it harder than ever to run unauthorized code on his thing. - quamb, on 06/12/2009, -4/+12I don't think Sony are confused at all. An update to hardware = $$. Well, with Apple and Nintendo it seems to work a treat.
- DarkShroud, on 06/12/2009, -2/+9You need to think about it for a minute. This is not the PSP2, it's just a hardware refresh to compeate with the DSi. Wait until the PSP2 for duel analog nubs, if Sony doens't do that then I will in the crowd clamoring for Sony blood.
- Elranzer, on 06/12/2009, -1/+8High-def (1080p) movies on a 272p screen?
- DarkShroud, on 06/12/2009, -2/+9You're supposed to use it in conjunction with a PC. The Go has a Memory Stick Micro slot.
- InfernoX, on 06/12/2009, -3/+10Most PSP games are under 1gb. you could have a handful of games and still room for a few gigs of music and a couple of high def movies.
- JuanBSU, on 06/12/2009, -8/+15Ree Plye butt-un
- Topher06, on 06/11/2009, -12/+18I have to agree, was never a huge fan of the PSP, largely because up until recently Sony kind of ignored the platform. But the PSP Go is definitely a step in the wrong direction for a mobile entertainment device. Its like the PSP group has been on auto-pilot for the last 5 years and have ignored every market trend in mobile gaming since the release of the original PSP. If the PSP Go was Sony's first foray into mobile gaming it would have been an impresive bit of kit but as a follow up to the original PSP its just confounding.
- paulsmith288, on 06/12/2009, -1/+7smaller formfactor and more internal memory.
Some people it wont impress , some it will. - sloach, on 06/12/2009, -1/+7Did you seriously read this article? It's not even a review, it's just saying that there's downloadable games (what Sony is offering), and you don't need the new PSP Go to get them. The whole point was that you don't need the PSP Go.
- Stingwolf, on 06/12/2009, -3/+8"Are you going to tell me the unproven idea that the UMD drive is the most expensive part (seriously?) Which is funny because early replacement assembly is priced less than the screen."
Well, the screen is smaller on the Go, so that's cheaper to produce as well. And the comparison with regards to the UMD drive is vs. 16 GB of flash memory, which is -much- cheaper than an optical drive assembly. So, yes, I sincerely believe it is cheaper to produce the Go. The jacked-up price serves the same purpose that all high prices on new devices serves: to pay for engineering costs.
I predict initial sales will be pretty good, followed by a sharp decline after the early adopters buy, and then followed by a price drop soon after, more in line with the lower production cost. - trdrstv, on 06/12/2009, -0/+5Because I don't want the ability to loan my games to friends, or sell / trade them when I'm done with them. THAT's why I need a "PSP GO"
Digital Distribution FTW! - Elranzer, on 06/12/2009, -4/+9Sony, whose bleeding money, really doesn't need to be supporting FOUR different consoles right now.
- mrBurnzz, on 06/12/2009, -2/+7this is the only concern i have with the psp go
- Elranzer, on 06/12/2009, -2/+7Yay. Proprietary charging/data cable and even more proprietary memory card format than the Memory Stick. Way to go, Sony!
- NiceGuyVan, on 06/12/2009, -2/+6"Yes, but with Apple and Nintendo you actually get something on that upgrade. "
PSP 1000 to 2000
-from 32 MB of RAM and flash, to 64 MB of each, allowing faster load times via UMD caching, and more firmware functionality
-TV out (component only for games)
-smaller
-better battery life
-better dpad
2000 to 3000
-better screen
-TV out now works over composite for games
3000 to Go
-smaller
-16 GB internal memory
-Bluetooth
DS to DSi
-more RAM (which they can and have added to the DS via a cart that came with the web browser)
-0.3 MPix cameras (which they can and have added to the DS via a cart)
-upgradeable firmware/internal memory (which they can and have added via a cart with an SD slot before)
Nothing Nintendo has ever added to their handhelds compares to TV out - shininia, on 06/12/2009, -1/+5The gamecube had maybe three exclusives that were any good.
- trdrstv, on 06/12/2009, -1/+5@Elranzer
You haven't LIVED until you saw a 1080p movie downsampled to fit onto a PSP screen!
- jacksons98, on 06/12/2009, -0/+4excepts Iphone sucks for gaming
- staticneuron, on 06/12/2009, -2/+6The go has 16 built in. You can get another MS micro to expand the space by at least another 16 gigs or more.
- LocalDocal, on 06/12/2009, -2/+6Personally, I would disagree. The original PSP (I own a PSP-1000) fit into my pocket fine, albeit you can see the edge of the thing. Furthermore, it was probably the most comfortable handheld system I've ever owned. If this is the case for me, then holding the PSP Go would probably be less comfortable.
If you ask me, this is too major of a redesign, and anybody can easily tell that there will be huge issues with the casual market. When a gaming device has even hardcore gamers split in support, you'd have to wonder how it'd go with the casual market. Of course, the hardcore market is not always a good indication of whether a device will be successful or not (e.g. the Wii's incredible success), but when your intention is to take gaming from its traditional route of cartridge/disc to a completely download-based system, then I'm pretty sure there will be a lot of issues. - inactive, on 06/12/2009, -0/+4Sucks that you're too poor to own both.
- themastersb, on 06/12/2009, -2/+6The only reason I want it is because I still have a first gen PSP and it's a little beat up so once this gets homebrew capabilities and custom firmware it'll be the perfect upgrade.
- blackhole82, on 06/12/2009, -1/+5I think I'll stick with my PSP2000. Already downloaded FF7 and slapped it on my memory stick. The nostalgia is great.
- inactive, on 06/12/2009, -0/+3eer, I own both for3.
- Elranzer, on 06/12/2009, -1/+4He said options. Apple products aren't very heavy on options.
- Kwipper, on 06/12/2009, -4/+7Kaz Harai: The Sony PSP Go! will be priced at... 249.99 US Dollars.
... giant enemy crab... - NeoTechni, on 06/12/2009, -5/+8Don't use stupid words
- jedinate, on 06/12/2009, -1/+4What is the incentive for someone who already owns a PSP to buy this? It costs more than my 1st PSP did and now all the games I bought on UMD are useless?
Are they going to start a "Trade in your UMD for a free digital version" program? Until they do that and mark it down to $149.99, I'll stay with what I've got. - Zarchon, on 06/12/2009, -1/+4I have both and i have no regrets.
- DuneAdx, on 06/12/2009, -3/+6This makes me want a DSi just for how cool it looks. And Scribblenauts.
Of course, I still think the Gameboy Pocket is the most beautiful piece of technology every created. Especially the back. It's the perfect blend of function and form.
I hate portable devices with any kind of slide mechanism. They always feel cheap and loose after a few weeks. - Elranzer, on 06/12/2009, -1/+4Skype is no replacement for a real cellphone, though.
- Elranzer, on 06/12/2009, -4/+7"because in comparison to other devices, the PSP go is priced badly at all."
Compared to the current PSP, the PSP Go is priced pretty badly. - NeoTechni, on 06/12/2009, -0/+3"not everyone with a PSP owns a P$3"
That dollar sign was so clever.
And 50% of PSP owners have a PS3
", otherwise its not a true FPS, "
So Goldeneye and Perfectdark aren't true FPSs? Last I checked the definition of a true FPS was that you shoot from the first person perspective - nightmaregnome, on 06/12/2009, -0/+3Mario Sunshine
Wind Waker
MGS:TS
RE:0
SSBM
MK:DD
Metroid Prime 1&2
Baten Kaitos
FF: Crystal Chronicles....... - nightmaregnome, on 06/12/2009, -1/+4CFW is not an option for everyone.
- jacksons98, on 06/12/2009, -1/+3I want one, because I like the smaller size of it.
The current PSP is great, but a little bulky for true portable use. - danwallace, on 06/12/2009, -1/+3Those "scanline issues" are blown out of proportion. I've owned one since launch and never seen a single problem.
