- UncleJaysus, on 12/17/2007, -28/+59Indeed.
Digg is getting ruined by fanboys who feel the need to bury good-news stories of other systems. - betterth, on 12/17/2007, -12/+37If they can turn those to sales than great but they overshipped earlier and stacks on shelves look terrible for demand.
- triplehelix, on 12/17/2007, -3/+25dude, i don't know what trailer site you visit, but i think you should know its not video game trailers they're showing.
- Shawn4168, on 12/17/2007, -19/+38Why is this news? Production milestones mean absolutely nothing if you can't sell what you've already made.
- shinythingy, on 12/17/2007, -7/+26Sold 7 million actually, slightly more than 6 million
- inactive, on 12/17/2007, -9/+27The Playstation 3 is selling at the same rate as the Xbox 360's first year. In fact, Microsoft missed their sales goals and have also been stuffing the channel with consoles that haven't been sold. The only clear winners right now is the Wii and the PS2.
- truespector, on 12/17/2007, -7/+25Well, didn't they say they were selling approx. 300,000 a week after the release of the 40GB model? Could have something do to with it. Maybe.
- inactive, on 12/17/2007, -7/+25i'll bet money he waits for a ps3 story to get 5 diggs to drop his gaylo and jump in here
- charlescheese, on 12/17/2007, -3/+20Ooooh you're so right, Sony is the worst offender of anti-competitive behavior. That's why Microsoft has spent the better part of the last 10 years fighting in US and European courts for their anti-competitive ways. Anyone on the other side of Microsoft KNOWS what they do, and that is absolutely crush their competition, even if it means losing lots and lots of money to drive their competitors out of business, so they can maintain their various monopolies. The LAST thing the game business needs is for Softy to crush the competition.
Personally, I think the competition between Sony and Microsoft has forced them both to give gamers a tremendous amount of value that they might not have felt they needed to if the competition didn't exist. - coheedcollapse, on 12/17/2007, -2/+18Albo23 gets his video game trailers at farmsex.com
- truespector, on 12/17/2007, -10/+26I think the lack of backwards compatibility is over blown. I have the 20GB which supports just about every PS2 game there. I have yet to pop a PS2 disc in it. I'm too busy enjoying playing the PS3 games to bother playing PS2 ones.
- Nobi-Wan, on 12/17/2007, -1/+17What is that game and where can I buy it???
- fognozzle, on 12/17/2007, -8/+23Are they expecting sales to pick up after the holidays?
- Etchii, on 12/17/2007, -6/+21Uncharted is excellent, the new burnout demo actually plays smoothly, Metal gear will be here soon, gran turismo as well. Patience man...xbox 360 didn't have ***** until this second year.. Even Halo 3 wasn't a first year title. I think the first year was mainly Oblivion, some terrible game about a detective...and geometry wars evolved.
- Adgeman, on 12/17/2007, -6/+21How the hell do I block this idiot so I don't see his fanboy comments? Check out his history; seems he spends most of his time commentating on PS3 stories.
- masterm1nd, on 12/17/2007, -0/+14No, it's probably in the shop.
- ozid, on 12/17/2007, -2/+15Who doesn't have a PS2, though? Seriously. I use my PS2 for PS2 games. My 60gb PS3 is for PS3 Games. You could buy a 40gb and a brand new PS2 for the same price as a 80gb.
- RaiderWolf, on 12/17/2007, -19/+32Congratulations on nothing. http://www.vgchartz.com/
- totorototoro, on 12/17/2007, -4/+16"black whole" lol.
- Dracusis, on 12/17/2007, -5/+17If the console war is over, than the PS2 already won with having over 100 million units sold.
- LUElinks, on 12/17/2007, -2/+13Three years in? You mean 13 months in?
- RooX, on 12/17/2007, -9/+20the venom some people have for an inatimate object always amazes me. Suppose people would be happier with a monopoly on the market? Say, all nintendo, or all microsoft?
Are the people that are championing the 360 also the ones disparaging microsoft windows vs linux/osx? Seesm to be an awful lot of both round these parts. - inactive, on 12/17/2007, -2/+12What a shocker when one of the competition has been out for an entire YEAR longer, and the other one costs less than half as much.
- KyleMistry, on 12/17/2007, -2/+12I know. It'd be ridiculous if they did this sort of thing with the Wii.
Oh, wait. - rusty123jimi, on 12/17/2007, -5/+15I dont really care who sells the most...I'm still going to enjoy my PS3. If I could...I would probably go out and buy the other two consoles...but I just want to throw this one out there. The PS3 has sold slightly more at the current time then 360 did during its first year...and thats when they didn't have any competition...just throwing that in the air.
- superkendall, on 12/17/2007, -5/+15Ratchet & Clank
Uncharted
UT III (at least not on a 360)
Resistance (still a great game)
Soon, Little Big Planet...
The unique reasons to own a PS3 are growing. And in the meantime there is a lot of cross-platform stuff. - shinythingy, on 12/17/2007, -4/+13PGR3 and oblivion didn't persuade me to buy a 360
- jacksons98, on 12/17/2007, -1/+10@powerhouse
Just curious, you might say proprietary formats, for Sony like UMD... Well what about Nintendo DS cartridges are those an open standard?? You might say Sony is part of the RIAA, well Microsoft is the leading financier of the BSA. Microsoft also pushes their own formats, ever heard of WMV?
Let me know what practices you are referring to because I can't see a difference between them. The fact is they all want to protect their investments, make a profit, and keep people buying games. - charlescheese, on 12/17/2007, -5/+14Nintendo is certainly no better than Sony, and we all know microsoft is a shark in the water in every business they get into. They are by far the most monopolistic corp in the games business.
- superkendall, on 12/17/2007, -3/+12Which Sony? Because Sony Games hasn't done any of the things you hate them for.
By siding with the Sony haters, you are being manipulated by a small group of people dedicated to simply bringing down corporations in general. Why hurt yourself for a boycott that makes no sense? - eclectro, on 12/17/2007, -23/+31Does this mean that there are 11 million PS3s on store shelves?
- charlescheese, on 12/17/2007, -4/+12I think games like Uncharted, Resistance, Ratchet, Motorstorm, Unreal Tournament III, as well as a host of multi platform titles coupled with their extremely strong game lineup for 08 are plenty reason for most people to consider the PS3. Then you add in the fact that it's a bluray hidef movie player and comes with free wifi and free online play, and then you compare the $50 cheaper 360 with no hidef movie player, no free wifi, no free online play, and I think anyone willing to look at the math HAS to take a long hard look at ps3. I did the math, and that's why PS3 won out for me. Plus sony first party is prolific. They will, and as far as I'm concerned have already, deliver. Uncharted is the most fun I've had playing a game in a long time.
- MrLunar, on 12/17/2007, -3/+11So they just had a recent shipment of PS3s? So what?
- triplehelix, on 12/17/2007, -3/+11400K a week i believe it is.
- WhereAmI, on 12/18/2007, -1/+8They do say how many they have sold. Everyone then says stfu Sony you liar liar pants on fire - At least thats what I gather from truspector.
- kingmanic, on 12/17/2007, -0/+7~5.3 mil as of june 2008. Should be like 7 by now.
- thatsmyaibo, on 12/17/2007, -2/+9truspector...go play in traffic. You are such a 360 fanboy it makes me sick. Open your eyes, there is a whole new world out there. One where people can have other opinions.
- neocr0n, on 12/17/2007, -15/+22Bury me all you want I'm confident the PS3 will be the dominant console over 2008 and to the end of its cycle. Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo are all console sellers. Not to mention new ips both known and unknown. The hardware in the machine is fantastic and once the few good first party games drive sales and the install base picks up companies like EA might actually code games properly for the PS3 and utilise its capability instead of pushing out broken Xbox360 ports. The future is bright, its sales match the Xbox360's first year so far and the Xbox360 did that unopposed. PS3 has done it against a cheap gimmick system and a already established system with a years software behind it.
- Dracusis, on 12/18/2007, -0/+7*****. Everyone said Sony only won the 6th gen sales race because it was out before the xbox or the game cube, yet now everyone has changed their tune because the 360 was out first and it's getting whipped by the Wii. Furthermore, it's still not doing that great against the PS3 given the advantageous software line-up it currently has.
The 360 has blown most of it's load with Halo 3 and Mass Effect. What's left? Gears of War 2, Fable 2 and Ninja Giaden 2 just don't measure up to the likes of Metal Gear Solid, Gran Tourismo, Final Fantasy and God of War, not to mention all of the new IP Sony are currently developing. Sony have 8 internal development studios, twice as many as Nintendo and Microsoft, Sony *could* seriously clean up in the coming 24 months but it definatly won't be easy for them.
They need to get bigger 3rd parties on their side like EA, Activision and Ubisoft; all of which have been critical toward the system of late. The only way they can do that is to increase hardware sales. The only way they're going to increase hardware sales is through solid and frequent releases of 1st party titles, something that has been lacking since the PS3s launch, something that's been slated to get better in 2008, but all we can do right now is speculate. The playing field is levelling out, but there's still no clear leader here. - drakino, on 12/18/2007, -0/+6"Instead they decided that putting a blu-ray player to sell there DVD format was more important then selling there gaming format..."
*sigh*
Why do people find fault for Sony doing the exact same thing every other gaming console in history has done, and then chose to do it in a better way. What is it I speak of? Well, it's a trend in video game consoles dating all the way back to the first one. It's normal to increase the storage space for the games over the previous generation, thus raising the limitations a bit higher and allowing game developers to make bigger and better games. Now since Sony shipped a DVD drive in the PS2, and a CD drive in the Playstation, they needed to continue the trend and increase the storage space. They could have used a proprietary disc (ala the GD-ROM in the Dreamcast), but using a disc like that means it will cost more to make, as less people are manufacturing them and improvements to make the manufacturing cost cheeper come much slower. Other parts of Sony were already working on a newer video disc format along with many other major companies. Contrary to popular belief, Sony didn't solely create the format, *****, Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, Samsung, and Sony worked with NP Infotech to create the format.
So, since a disc format likely to be mass produced was available that happens to hold more data then a DVD, the Playstation engineers chose it. And thus continued the trend.
However, this story wouldn't be complete without bring up Microsoft. They are the only video game console manufacturer to decide to buck this trend, and instead shipped the same storage medium between two generations of consoles. Quite a surprising move actually, since this generation is the first one to really embrace HD games. The jump to HD pretty much means increased resolution, and this carries into games requiring higher quality art assets to look better over the previous lower resolution generation.
But hey, keep knocking Sony for doing the same thing Atari, Nintendo, Sega, and others have always done. - kalsey, on 12/17/2007, -3/+9I don't see why the PS3 gets bashed so much about its slow sales, anyway. VGChartz shows the sales to be pretty much on par with the 360's from launch, so why the double standard?
http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php - superkendall, on 12/17/2007, -4/+10The must-have games are here, and growing. Uncharted & Ratchet are two, and Little Big Planet looks to be another when that arrives...
- inactive, on 12/18/2007, -1/+7Way to miss the front page today. The new PS3 firmware is coming this week with Divx/Xvid support and BD 1.1 support. The only difference between BD 1.1 and 2.0 are the internet connectivity features (yawn). PiP and other features will be available _tomorrow_.
- WhereAmI, on 12/18/2007, -3/+91. You can play R&C on the 360/Wii?
2. Like you've played it, and overrated games sell well
3. So I suppose it won't be crap when you buy it for your 360?
4. I agree
5. Well everything is opinion, but Reggie the Nintendo man said himself he is envious - kmg9000, on 12/17/2007, -7/+13I dont get why you guys base your views on how much a system has sold. Why not base it on if YOU like the system or not.
- charlescheese, on 12/17/2007, -3/+9And we all know how well anecdotal accounts pan out. They are always 100% accurate. In fact fanboy sales reports are always highly accurate. Always.
- inactive, on 12/17/2007, -15/+21i remember right before the wii/360/ps3 war started there was an article in a gaming mag interviewing the tops of all 3 companies. i remember the guy who was the head of sony usa after being asked about the $600 cost said something along the lines of: "we (sony), don't believe this price is an issue, because we have an established consumer base. we will sell the most simply because we have the best games. also the other cheapest blue-ray player on the market is $1000, so actually the ps3 is cheap."
i remember thinking this was really arrogant to assume they would be #1 because they were #1. and now 3 years in, where's the must-have games?? - gamemaster357, on 12/17/2007, -8/+13i dont get why ppl hate the PS3?
anyone want to tell me what it is about it that they absolutely cannot stand?
is it the color? the shape? the logo?
all these articles of increased PS3 sales is a good thing, know why? because competition leads to better things (in this case games and firmware)
it also makes products cheaper
stop hating, i think all 3 systems have something to offer - soccerman90, on 12/17/2007, -1/+6if people like it, they buy it -___-
