- Bodhesatva, on 11/25/2007, -23/+107That's really the issue, Username. Historically, console sales double in November over the October timeframe. Last year, the 360 increased 220 percent from October to November, with no price cut at all.
So... this is actually just in line with industry norms. It's hard to say right now, but this could actually be a bad thing; a price cut AND Christmas, and all you get is doubled sales? Given that the 360 and Wii are also likely to double with no price cut whatsover.... instead of good news, this could end up being very bad news long term. We'll see though, perhaps this does represent actual increased interest; it's difficult to separate Christmas related sales increases from price cut ones. - BlueSkyfish, on 11/25/2007, -14/+75Sales increased after a price drop and during the holiday rush? Who would have seen this coming?
- mrfreeziexp, on 11/25/2007, -4/+57why is this on macworld?
- Dylson, on 11/25/2007, -24/+74Just picked up my PS3 a week ago. Lovin the thing.
- asdfuiop, on 11/25/2007, -15/+53I think what is even more shocking is that the PS3 has outsold the Wii(!) in Japan 2 weeks in a row:
http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/11/22/ps3-outsells-w ... - TheFoundry, on 11/25/2007, -13/+47Well gee, I bet all the other consoles jumped too. It's holiday season.
- AuhsojSivart, on 11/25/2007, -10/+32Just bought mine yesterday. R&CFToD is pretty awesome.
- Sniper, on 11/26/2007, -6/+28I'm getting tired of people complaining about the price of the PS3. You seriously think it should cost the same as the Wii? A product that uses upgraded Gamecube hardware and a fancy controller?
- ZenMojo, on 11/26/2007, -5/+25You mean Sony is acting like Nintendo was acting until the year 2003?
- ZenMojo, on 11/26/2007, -0/+20Isn't Nintendo also Japanese?
- Sniper, on 11/26/2007, -2/+20So what are you waiting for, your 360 to die before you have a chance to trade it in?
- jucodadi, on 11/25/2007, -7/+25Don't forget 15 free movies
- jstone, on 11/26/2007, -5/+23Why is everybody so angry about Blu-Ray? It's the technologically superior format. So it's backed by Sony, big deal. It has a bunch of other backers, too. Oh, and Microsoft is among the HD-DVD backers. You can't honestly say that Sony is worse.
- Typhoon2009, on 11/26/2007, -11/+28I've been considering trading my 360 for a PS3. The games I play on 360 are available on PS3, I like the layout and design of the PS3 more, and the PS3 is a heck of a lot more reliable than the 360. It also has built-in WiFi, which is essential for me (unfortunately).
- MasterPlayer, on 11/26/2007, -3/+19What? The fourth comment I've read saying basically the exact same thing? I'm shocked.
- kered, on 11/26/2007, -7/+21Bought the PS3 to get the Blue Ray & DVD player plus capability for all the same games. I am impressed, sleek solid design with a quality feel, and with the newest software update.....trouble free.
- sig7, on 11/26/2007, -1/+15First of all the 360 has been out a year longer, so yes it's going to have better quality games. Check out the state of the 360 this time last year and you will see that the only worthwhile games were gears of war and dead rising.
Yes, the multi platform games look better on the 360 most of the time (because they are ports, so that's a no brainer). Yet, the ps3 exlusive games all look better then anything the 360 has to offer. Examples, are heavenly sword, lair, uncharted, ratched and clank, GT5 and the upcoming killzone 2. It's a known fact that the ps3 is the more powerful system. If you look at a game like unchrated for example and you still believe there is something on teh xbox that beats it graphically then you might just need to book an appointment with your optometrist. - gamemaster357, on 11/26/2007, -7/+20u fanboys can diss the numbers if u like
but hey i have a ps3
and all the games out and all that are coming (uncharted is amazing)
im pretty happy
//UT3 with full keyboard and mouse + unlimited mods? yes please - TheXeno, on 11/26/2007, -5/+18You must buy Drake's Fortune. I played Ratchet and declared it the PS3's best game, then I up and played Drakes (still playing) and it took Ratchet's pedestal. Seriously, one of the best single player campaigns I've ever played. Ranks up there with the fun factor of the original Devil May Cry.
- Myonosken, on 11/26/2007, -2/+15They are trying to get one over on Microsoft's console.
- OokieWonderslug, on 11/26/2007, -22/+34For me it was the price that kept me from getting a PS3. While the console is still way overpriced, I figured I had waited long enough and got the $399 version. I had a Xbox 360. It kept getting that red ring of death. I had to pay for the online stuff too. It was just an inferior product. The Wii was pretty cool, but I just didn't like it that much when I had one. Once the novelty of the controller wears off you're stuck with a console that is just not up to snuff with the others.
I think the PS3 has far more potential and is better made. It should eventually beat both of it's competitors. It still could use another $100 off it's price though. That price tag is just too large for a game system. - porcupus, on 11/26/2007, -4/+16If you look at the two power consoles, at this point the PS3 is finally getting games and has reached a "reasonable" price point. The 360 is lacking a lot considering it's a highly gimped PC, that doesn't allow regular PC capabilities and nickels and dimes for everything.
At this point, if anyone is picking up a next gen console, the PS3 is a no brainer.
It has built in tech that goes far beyond that of the 360 and will undoubtedly outlast the 360. - TheXuu, on 11/26/2007, -5/+16... in a box... somewhere....
- eexlebots, on 11/25/2007, -4/+15There's talk of Apple using Blu-Ray drives in upcoming Mac revisions, so I suppose the health of the PS3's sales is a measure of how likely the new Macs will have Blu-Ray drives.
- IllBeBack, on 11/25/2007, -18/+28What? Sales rising around Christmas? I'm shocked.
- Billykerr, on 11/26/2007, -0/+10That's the whole rationale behind most of the console wars. People can only afford to get one at a certain point for some reason, so they have to convince themselves that they got the best, and the others are the worst. I would own a PS3 if I wasn't a poor gotdamn college student. Maybe this summer.
- gridbread, on 11/26/2007, -0/+9Large amount of comments, small amount of diggs.
Must be a positive Sony article. - seanhive, on 11/25/2007, -16/+24I'm still rooting for the comeback kid.
- smacksaw, on 11/26/2007, -5/+13This makes perfect sense. Even though it's a "smaller" HD than before, it's still 40GB to the 20GB of the 360. You get a 360 for $350, but after you add in an intercooler, wireless networking and the HD-DVD player the unit is well over $500.
For $399, the PS3 still has a bigger HD and wireless and plays movies. For less money.
Even though the 60GB PS3 was $500, I felt it was an equal value to the 360, except the 360 didn't have the HDMI port I wanted at the time. I wanted the 360 more, but I don't think the value is the same. Especially because I have to buy MS hard disks instead of my own I can easily pop into my PS3. When the 360 goes down in price by another 30-40% I think I'll jump in. - thecheatah, on 11/26/2007, -2/+10You dont have a ps3 do you. There are MANY games that are really good. I don't care to list them since your a fan boy. Go look up ps3 reviews on ign.
- MaTT2011, on 11/25/2007, -19/+26that would be Nintendo, and they have comeback. Sony represents the cocky A-hole with the leather jacket and the bad 80's haircut.
- drizzlelicious, on 11/26/2007, -1/+8Link?
- WhereAmI, on 11/26/2007, -3/+10Lets think here:
Resistance
Ratchet
Uncharted
Folklore
Eye of Judgement
Heavenly Sword
Warhawk
to:
Halo 3
Viva Pinata
Mass Effect
Dead Rising
You may be thinking of Gears of War. Thats on PC too.
And these are the games that are out. - mywhitenoise, on 11/25/2007, -9/+16haven't seen that joke before.
- bocaJWho, on 11/26/2007, -5/+12I did a google news search for ' "xbox 360" sales 220 ' between 2005 and 2006 - none of the results said xbox 360 sales increased 220%.
http://news.google.com/archivesearch?q=%22xbox+360 ...
Would you like to cite a source, or can I just assume you pulled that number out of your ass?
And before people digg me down for being a stickler for numbers or being a Sony fanboy (I'm really not), let me explain why I bring this up: Bobhesatva stated this number as fact, and gave at least one significant digit, so at the least it is assuming sales increase somewhere between 215 and 225. If you have no basis for those numbers, why state them at all? Don't spread wrong information.
On a side note, a 200% increase in sales isn't sales doubling - that would be a 100% increase. A 200% increase means sales tripled. - WhereAmI, on 11/26/2007, -1/+8wageslaven is that you?
- HappyScrappy, on 11/26/2007, -1/+7PSN is far better. I'm not sure why. It's possible it'll get worse as more people get on there. At a $600 entry fee and few games you have fewer 13 year olds on your service.
- inactive, on 11/25/2007, -11/+17Yeah I just got my PS3 on Saturday because of the "10 free movies" deal at Wal Mart. I couldn't be happier- it's an amazing console.
- eryximachus, on 11/26/2007, -1/+7Umm, only a moronic follower would care about rankings. The entire game reviewing business is a fraud.
I have 10 PS3 games, and all of them have been well worth the money. Some of the reviews I find truly perplexing. Folklore for instance is a solid game. There is no reason for the poor reviews it receives. Ultimately however, money and age are a factor.
The 360 is just not oriented towards the upper class. I have spent thousands of dollars on my entertainment set up. I would never put MS crap in my living room, EVER. - HappyScrappy, on 11/26/2007, -2/+8It has some exclusive games (and more in the future).
It has a BluRay player.
It isn't as bad for nickeling and diming (no extra costs for Wi-Fi, rechargable controllers, online play, etc.).
Also my 360 is dead 1 month a year for two years running. And every time someone tells me that's not a big deal, I'm reminded otherwise, when my friend called me today and his 360 died for the 2nd time in 18 months. He bought a replacement unit (while he sends his in) because he doesn't feel MS will ever send him a properly working replacement (don't know if I agree).
So, it's a combination of factors. I agree it's not a slam dunk, but there's good enough reasons for someone like me who can afford it. - Naryuu, on 11/26/2007, -1/+6its worth it simply for the price of the blu-ray player
- ZenMojo, on 11/26/2007, -4/+9192% increase is triple the sales (100% + 192% increase).
- sig7, on 11/26/2007, -1/+6Stores make purchases to meet demand.
- Harbinger67, on 11/26/2007, -1/+6Mac + potential PS3 drama = insane amounts of diggs, duh.
- nogami, on 11/26/2007, -3/+8I picked up a PS3 on Friday - the price dropped low enough that I didn't feel too bad about buying it - I didn't purchase it to play games on, but there are a few I might buy.
All of the movies I wanted were also on Blu-Ray so that made my choice much easier. It's a pretty nice console - the UI is very polished and fits in perfectly with my media centre - I just need DIVX playback to be completely happy.
I was also pretty impressed by the upscaling of regular DVDs - it does a very nice job, much better than I was expecting. - inactive, on 11/26/2007, -0/+5I rationalize it as this:
Online multiplayer is free.
I have an HDTV, I wanted Bluray
If I want to upgrade the harddrive, I can go to my corner PC store and grab one. Where MS charges $99 for 20 gigs
I don't fear turning my PS3 on.
I can copy mp3s/savegames/videos from network devices/usb devices/cd/dvd, you can't on 360
The controllers charge with standard USB.
It has more games I want.
I love Remote Play - Nathrat, on 11/26/2007, -0/+5now you can play all your old PS2 games, yay...40GB can't do that.
- WhereAmI, on 11/26/2007, -3/+7I think I do own a 360 and a PS3(not OP but talkin), and that username9000 is a simple troll along the lines of wagelsaven and truespector. I also agree with OP except I don't own a Wii and cant say anything about it other than thats what I've been saying would happen this whole time.
- poxonyou, on 11/26/2007, -1/+5Nintendo never stopped being cocky. What other company would release an underpowered system, with few additional features, expecting it to sell well because of its different controller?
Too many people fell for the underdog, it's-about-the-games-not-graphics ***** (as if other console manufacturers tell developers, "Hey guys. Make sure the graphics look awesome, but don't worry about the game being fun because we're all about the graphics here, not fun.") Nintendo knows they can release weaker products, at higher costs, if they have something gimmicky with them and take advantage of people's sympathy for the perceived underdog.
I hope Sony comes back. The PS2 had so many fun games, many surprises. Anyway, I patiently wait another year to see how things turn out. In the meantime, I have my DS Lite. - WhereAmI, on 11/26/2007, -2/+6I don't think the intercooler helps personally. It just doesn't reach it well enough. Its better than nothing, but just won't help the problem enough.
