- ThreeDee912, on 02/06/2008, -3/+67It's insane that the PS3's running Folding@home have processed over twice the amount of data than all the PC's combined since 2001!

- WhereAmI, on 02/06/2008, -2/+25Digg has an unofficial team somewhere, but I would never join it. Digg users have a giant anti-PS3 swing to them, so I joined the team hack-a-day instead. There we all are interested in hacking, regardless if its a Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo or a cardboard box.

Obligatory tags aren't going to save you from me clicking the bury button, you know you meant it.
/obligatory - mattyice11, on 02/06/2008, -0/+21A waste of electricity would be keeping your AC on rather than opening a window on a cool night. Folding is a very worthy use of electricity.
- HydrogenOxide, on 02/06/2008, -0/+20Yes, it's a great thing to do when you aren't playing games.
- tastypaste, on 02/06/2008, -0/+19I think cancer research is a better cause than hunting for ETs. It would be cool to find an alien radio signal, but curing cancer would help more people.
- mindracer, on 02/06/2008, -0/+19youre really dumb.. it says 3000 people registered A DAY on average since it was released..
- bigbadgoat, on 02/06/2008, -3/+20actually there's 9 million people with them.
- Ajajadude, on 02/06/2008, -0/+16I don't think we've ever heard that joke before!
- headband, on 02/06/2008, -0/+16actually its only 999,998 users because of that guy that has 3 ps3's
- WinterWolf33, on 02/06/2008, -0/+15Get with the times, old man!
- alittleroy101, on 02/06/2008, -2/+17 I was under the impression that it was different data. I thought it couldn't replace the PCs, only augment them. They both have their strengths. Is this right?
- Ajajadude, on 02/06/2008, -1/+16You're not very bright, are you?
- braditude101, on 02/06/2008, -7/+21We PS3 owners have to do something till Metal Gear Solid 4 is out...
- WhereAmI, on 02/06/2008, -1/+12This is why I don't fold for the Digg folding team.
- Unremarkable, on 02/06/2008, -0/+11Unless, of course, those aliens already have a cure for cancer.
- inactive, on 02/06/2008, -2/+13@linkin2 , wtf is wrong with you? even if it remotly helps to save a life, or lives why not? it doesn't hurt your ps3 to run folding while not in use. You might as well do something productive with your life. At least i can sleep at night knowing that i gave a little something back.
- inactive, on 02/06/2008, -0/+10The world will only create a better idiot.

Samir: Yes, this is horrible, this idea. - Hoov, on 02/06/2008, -6/+16Does the PS3 have to be left on to run F@H?

- Gizza, on 02/06/2008, -3/+12the GPUs are by far the most efficient at it though.
PS3: 587 / 23659 = 0.025 teraflops / processor
GPU: 39 / 653 = 0.06 teraflops / processor
Too bad there are so few Folding@Home enabled GPUs running it. - Nth3nSum, on 02/06/2008, -0/+9Has very little to do with 64bit - more to do with the type of chip.
The cell chip is very fast at what folding does. Simple calculations very quickly split up into 7 'cpu's' running at very fast speeds.
x86 was never meant to do number crunching like this, fast. It's a general processing system that can branch in unpredictable ways very well.
The closest thing you have in a PC to this is either a GPU or a Physics chip. If you look at the numbers that the GPU version of Folding puts out you'll see that the X86 chips just weren't meant for this.
In relation the PS3's are running 26 times faster than PC's, gonna be a long time before it can catch up performance wise to a PS3.
In contrast GPU's are running 2.4 times faster than PS3's
x86 is not meant to do this work. 64bit has nothing to do with it as the data sets are smaller than the 4gb limit of 32bit.
My Intel Quad core running at 3.7ghz doesn't even come close to my PS3 for folding. Does it matter to me, hell no the PC is far better than the PS3 at other tasks.
My PS3 pwnz the PC at Movies and folding.
My PC pwz the PS3 at Games, Surfing, VMware, Photoshop, Torrent, ....the list goes on. - triplehelix, on 02/06/2008, -0/+8you guys should do some actual reading before talking about the results this has produced.
"Folding@Home has been a success. We have folded several small, fast folding proteins, with experimental validation of our method. We are now working to further develop our method, and to apply it to more complex and interesting proteins and protein folding and misfolding questions.
Since then, Folding@Home has studied more complex proteins, reporting on the folding of many proteins on the microsecond timescale, including BBA5, the villin headpiece, Trp Cage, among others.
More recently, we have been putting a great deal of effort into studying proteins relevant for diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Hunntington's, and Osteogenesis Imperfecta.
You can learn more about our results, on our Results Page and you can see specific , peer-reviewed scientific achievements on our Papers Page."
and here's that results page:

- sandymac, on 02/06/2008, -1/+8My understanding the the GPUs can handle the most limited types of work units, and the PCs can handle the most broad types of work units. The PS3 falls somewhere in the middle of those two providing quite a bit more power per buck than a PC and quite a bit more flexibility per buck than a GPU.
- Dracusis, on 02/06/2008, -1/+8No, it's a magic PS3.
- Zera, on 02/06/2008, -0/+6It's a use of electricity that contributes to a wonderful charity that is doing some of the best medical research there is. In the midwest, where electricity is 8 cents per kilowatt, that $11.50 per month is worth it.
- Zera, on 02/06/2008, -2/+8Well, not really.... Folding has literally thousands of different units, and they all contribute in their own way. The units Folding hands out to PS3's are going to be big units that the PS3 is most effective in crunching. They all contribute, and it just turns out that the PS3 is good at 'Folding', but as Folding @ Home is optimized for 64 Bit computing, and PC processors continue to get bigger and better, PC's will be back out in front very soon.
In short, PS3's COULD replace PC's, but won't because they will be technologically caught up to very soon. At the moment, the PS3 is the most efficient way of computing F@H units, as far as unit credit/watt of electricity. However, Folding CAN run on any PC no matter what ELSE it is doing, and in that scenario, if the PC is being used for something else, then running Folding on it only increases it's power consumption 20-70 watts. (as opposed to the PC idling) - vibrokatana, on 02/06/2008, -0/+6Maybe if it was a 360, but hey it can't even do Folding@Home without voiding the warranty.
- theaceoffire, on 02/06/2008, -0/+6If it was on a "cool night", then hopefully saving future lives?
- inactive, on 02/06/2008, -3/+8I have 3 PS3s.
- Gizza, on 02/06/2008, -2/+7Hmm, actually just thinking about that a bit more, doesnt really make sense to draw that kind of conclusion from that data, my bad.
- Rikkochet, on 02/06/2008, -0/+5So, do ya think nobody got your joke, or that they just didn't find it funny?
- theaceoffire, on 02/06/2008, -0/+5Yes, every time it red-rings they get a new one for free.
- inactive, on 02/06/2008, -2/+6How is it overhyped? Final fantasy has always delivered...
- hauln4, on 02/06/2008, -0/+4You win.
- Manuelmty, on 02/06/2008, -1/+5Pro tip: REMOVE DUCT TAPE FROM VENTS *****!
- triplehelix, on 02/06/2008, -1/+5correct. the GPU is the fastest, but most limited
the CPU the slowest, but the most flexible
the PS3 a combination of the two - Ajajadude, on 02/06/2008, -1/+5Doubtful it will wear down your PS3 before it needs any sort of service or replacement to begin with.
