PS3 reaches 10 million four months sooner than Xbox360

vgchartz.com — What does it say when a console launched a year later, being more expensive, was prey to the most crazy anti-viral smear campaign ever, had two massive competition to deal with and "no" games to speak off... and still sold better/faster than the 360? Wow.

          But the article is only saying the PS3 hit the 10 million mark a lot faster than the 360 in the same timeframe - meaning that the PS3 is outselling the XBox, which isn't surprising considering all the RROD problems with the 360 and the dumping of HD-DVD.

      Don't blame the submitter though, the "line up launch date" is neat but hard to line up other events due to the shift in dates.

Console sales don't mean much, its GAME sales that show whether a console is being successful....and reveal the effect of the PS3 use as a Blu-ray player. Oh and guess who is #1 in game sales? That would be Xbox 360, then Wii, then PS2, not a typo... there are more sales in ps2 than ps3 games... ps3 game sales hardly register on the charts at all.

        The PS3 has not sold as much software as the 360 mainly because you know there millions more 360's in the population than there are PS3's. If there are 10 potential customers for one console and 18 for the other which do you think sells more.

        The counter argument of course is the Wii which has clearly sold more consoles than any other next gen machine. Well if the Wii was in fact second place to the 360 in terms of software sales maybe thats because it appeals to parents and families buying the console for their kids because its cheaper than the rest. As we know kids tend to get games for xmas and their birthday but very rarely in between. The PS3 and 360 are aimed at the average teen - adult who tend to buy more games than say your average 8 year old. The wii is aimed at the younger generation. Lets not forget that M$ also had a full year of software sales ahead of both its rival consoles and while that doesnt sound like much you have to see the effect on the market. Take for example the wii selling a game in december of 06 it would have had a million (tops) potential customers as opposed to the 360 which had around 8 milliion potential customers.

        • Trykt, on 02/20/2008, -2/+3Actually I think he was referring to the attach rate - how many games per console have been sold. The 360's attach rate is over 7 now, which is flat out amazing for any console in history and well above both the PS3 and Wii attach rates.

          The Wii's first party software (Zelda, Mario, etc.) is first rate and is probably accountable for most of what is selling. Third party support is absolute garbage, which is unfortunate but without a doubt the main contributing factor in the Wii's awful attach rate.

          The PS3 was having similar software issues but is just now starting to build a strong library. The attach rate will continue to rise with the releases of quality stuff like MGS4 and FF13, but I question whether they'll catch up to the 360 in the same timeframe as they've done in console sales.

There are some great 360 titles and some excellent cross platform titles that are worth purchasing a 360 for. Resist the urge the slag the 360 just because the PS3 is better doesnt make the 360 suddenly crap.

For example, it was incredibly over-priced but depending upon what country you live in it isn't so bad (US is ok, Australia/Europe it's not), they were very few decent games and they were so slow to get out but now that's not so true and here's an example of a bad thing, no ingame XMB yet.

My 360 is not hooked up now but it was hooked up then, and in that picture I put the PS3 on top for the picture, not how it is normally. A lot of those Multi-platform titles (Rock Bank, Assassin's Creed, COD4) I got for 360 before I got my ps3. I'll be buying those types of games for ps3 now though since it is more interested in playing games than red-ringing.

      Once Brawl is out though... It'll take something amazing to pull me from my Wii.

            Anyways, it doesn't matter since it's the same on each console.
            I go to online and within seconds I'm in a game with the right amount of people and I get my game on.

Turn that 40GB into a 250GB PS3 for $120.           And no great games? I'm gonna go ahead and say, before it even comes out, that MGS4 will be THE best game on the PS3, and it might hold that title for a long time. Maybe forever. Ohh yea, Final Fantasy 13, maybe you've hard of it. There is another sure hit that is coming out this year. Not to mention, every new kick-ass game that has come out for 360 is on PS3 now (COD4, Assassin's Creed, etc, etc).

Sony continues to lose money on every system sold primarily because of the cost of the Blu ray components. The PS3 came to market a year later and at a staggering price because of the aforementioned Blu ray drive. These facts hurt the PS3 as a game system and only helped it as a Blu ray player. It probably helped them win the format war, but only at the expense of game sales.

      Sony needs gamers to buy PS3s, and then needs those gamers to buy games to start turning a profit on this generation. They still make money on people using it only as a blu ray player, but the royalties on the movies aren't nearly as much as the licensing fees they receive on games.

      The attach rate on the PS3 is still the worst by far of the 3 consoles, and a fraction of that of the 360. People just aren't buying games for their PS3 and that hurts Sony's bottom line. If Sony put a normal DVD drive in the PS3 and started selling the system earlier, they would have far more developer support and an established fan base than they currently enjoy.

        Joking aside, Sony burned a lot of bridges in the tech community after their rootkit fiasco. People resented them for causing yet another format war, and their reputation was on par with that of The Empire at the beginning of A New Hope. They got mocked for calling their machine a computer, even though it is a form factor set top box which can run linux. They also have had half a dozen or more different PS3 models even though they have only had 2 on the market at any given time.
        Taking all of that bad press into consideration its not at all surprising that the system is selling now. The vast majority of people don't care, they don't read the news, they just want new shiny toys. The PS3 exterior is very shiny. Mystery solved.

The PS2 was only out in Japan for the first 7 months, so that graph has only Japan PS2 for the first 28 weeks or so, whereas the PS3 had Japan and America during those first 28 weeks. Since America + Japan is a lot bigger than just Japan, the PS3 should have been tracking ahead of the PS2, yet it was only on par with it during that time. The holiday seasons are different for each of them, which also throws the graph off. Just thought I'd let you know that.

So how about this, the PS3 is beating the 360 everywhere except North America, where it's starting to do much better than it was six months ago.

          Tru, at some point the RRoD is going to catch up with the 360. I think last months sales numbers are proof of that. The 360 is a fine platform, unfortunately you have to buy a piece of garbage piece of hardware to play the games on that platform (well, I suppose you could just play them on your pc as all the exclusives end up there anyway). That's why I don't have a 360, and it's the only reason at this point. For most people, I think there are other reason, such as the PS3 being a MUCH better value given the bluray drive, wifi, bigger HD, and free online. To get a comparable 360 to the 40gb PS3 you'd be looking at at least $700 with wifi, 20 gig hard drive, a year of live, and the mythical bluray drive that doesn't yet exist for the 360. The PS3 is a tremendously good deal compared to the 360, and it doesn't break.

Most people who play games use a wired connection because they want to eliminate all possible sources of lag, so your wifi argument doesn't hold up (so for a 20GB - not gb - 360, you're looking at $350 from newegg, with $50 for a year of live (with a headset). Also, I buy my game systems to play games - blu-ray isn't that important. And no matter what you say, after owning PS2 and XBox and 360, live is much better than other offerings for online gaming. It's nice to be able to track my friends and communicate with almost every user.

            And, here's a news flash, PS3's DO indeed break. And most people with a 360 (or a PS3) have absolutely no problems with it.

If you truly want to say that any console is dependent on 1 region, then you'd have to say that the 360 would be hopelessly far behind were it not for America.

I debated writing up a long explanation about programming for different architectures even when core characteristics are the same, but you clearly aren't a programmer so you wouldn't understand a damn thing. The Cell's biggest issue is that it's most efficient at processing LDA's, most of which are already handled by the graphics processor.

    • MikedaSnipe, on 02/20/2008, -2/+0The The saturn deserved nothing, the system traded deceptive impressive specs (3 processers) for bottlenecks, hard to program development (3 processers, which honestly weren't that much more powerful then N64s/PSX in the best case scenerio, were abmysal noting that video game developers had budgets). The system was big, ugly, and some of the crap on it was stupid. The controller sucked at first, although to be fair so did sonys. They had horrible first party support (sonic R and sonic ugh...), the must have 3rd parties i can count on one hand. I have them all besides radiant silvergun.
