PS3 production costs cut by half

ps3fanboy.com — It is being reported that due to removable of various components from the PS3's innards, coupled with smaller chip size, Sony has been able to cut the production cost of the PS3 by half since last year. Each console can now be produced at $400 a unit, rather than the $800 it was costing for each PS3 around November 2006.

    If they could drop the price of the 40GB down to $300 (which you can already do at sonystyle.com...I know, i'm lame for advertising), or even $350 that would probably rival, or maybe even sink the sales of the 360. 2008 is going to be a huge turning point for this console.

The $400 PS3 has Wifi (add $100 for the xbox) has a hard drive that's twice as big, has free online play for life, constantly adds new features, has motion control if that's your thing, oh AND it's a the best movie player on the market across all formats that matter. Uh so you're telling me the $400 360, which is what it costs with a year of live, is a better value? That's horse *****.

    -They're doing PS2 backward compatibility in software (virtualization to be specific), so they were able to eliminate all the old PS2 parts that were inside the PS3.
    -The price of the Blu-Ray drives have fallen considerably since a year ago (probably related to the benefits from economies of scale).
    -The GPU and Cell Processor are also benefiting from not being so cutting-edge (so they're cheaper to produce).

    There's no reason to dig this guy down, his question is a reasonable one.

It turns out that is mostly due to the people making the comparisons not having a certain feature of the PS3 turned on, or on it's highest setting- namely the RGB full range set to full instead of limited, and the super-white output being turned on. It's important to note these are off by default.

    In a country where buying a gaming PC costs about the same than most consoles due to crazy entertainment import taxes, there is a growing stigma of dislike for the 360. For roughly the same price you can get a more versatile machine with 98% of the same games and run them in higher resolutions at a higher frame rate.

    Most people I know that own 360s seems much more upset about them than the PS3 owners I know.

    They need to build up their user base. Besides, the money isn't in the consoles, it's in the games. If you sell more consoles, you sell more games.

    According to your price, Sony would lose over $150 per unit (factor packaging and shipping, plus the fact that retailers like making a profit). Down from $400, but they're still losing tons of cash. How many PS3s has sony sold this far? Losing $300-400 on each one sold...
