- nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -14/+93It's pretty much definitely a better deal than the elite now. It's 20 bucks more and 60 gb less but has a blu-ray player and free online play, and the controller is rechargable. Plus wi-fi and several memory card readers.
- skull24, on 10/11/2007, -27/+69I will be getting one very soon.
- DarkShroud, on 10/11/2007, -6/+40I'll probably get one now and get the 5 free blu-ray movies as well.
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/11/2007, -6/+38And with the new update, it streams music and video from a networked PC or Mac like an Apple TV.
- fearlessfx, on 10/11/2007, -19/+49$499 is still alot for a gaming machine with no games... but for a bluray player its pretty solid.
- Septimus, on 10/11/2007, -18/+47LOL, I believe you when you are playing the 360, but Wii? Come on that's *****. There is just utter ***** other than a 2 year old GameCube game worth playing on the Wii.
- jcmagnus, on 10/11/2007, -5/+30Glad to see Sony finally confirm the price-drop. The new 80gb version (with Motorstorm) isn't really worth it because the game is around $60, and how much does an extra 20gb cost nowadays? exactly.
So with that being said... yay price-drop... and I want E3 to start already!! - silverwolfe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24Dunno how likely a 360 price cut is, especially since they just expanded all those warranties. That was over a billion dollars in damage there.
- AhrenBa, on 10/11/2007, -7/+29Wow, this is great news! The $499 model is definitely a great deal. I have no clue why someone would want to buy the new 80GB SKU though. You only get 20 more Gigs and Motorstorm for $100 more? I think I would rather pay less and sacrifice the extra 20 gigs.
I agree with the others, I hope this will drive a 360 price cut also. The next generation is too damn expensive, and the costs needs to get driven down somehow. - TangentThought, on 10/11/2007, -3/+25People have been crying for a $100 price cut. Now it's happened and people are still saying it's too much.
- nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23It's not really up to Sony/Microsoft to make the prices for any 3rd party games.
- Lasereth, on 10/11/2007, -5/+25What are you playing on your Wii exactly? Twilight Princess? Most people have beat it already. What else is there? Seriously, what other good games are there? Don't say Red Steel or Medal of Honor or any of the other crap party games. The Wii's software selection sucks. 75% of the good games on the system are Virtual Console games made in 1989.
The PS3 has MotorStorm, Oblivion, and Resistance: Fall of Man. That's about as many quality games as the Wii has right now. - alx242, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Its a standard 2.5" inch SATA drive bay...Sony has made it this way to ensure 3rd party drives works and IT DOESN'T void any warranty, this was their (Sonys) intention.
- Pirius, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18You heard wrong.
- TdiFFRob6876, on 10/11/2007, -7/+23And the consumer wins!!!
- Barnolde, on 10/11/2007, -6/+22I think this will help Sony a lot. Coupled with all the bad press the 360 has been getting lately. It took 31 days to get mine back from repair, that's ridiculous, I'd rather just get a PS3 and pay the extra for the convenience of being able to game all the time, among other things.
- LordSkywalker, on 10/11/2007, -41/+56If there were any significantly good games, I'd consider buying one. Meanwhile I'm too busy playing the 360 and some Wii.
- elfuego, on 10/11/2007, -9/+24Well, I'd say this hopefully leads to a 360 price cut... but I already have my 360, so not much point there... seriously, if these guys really want to knock my socks off, start releasing more games at the $30-40 price point... Oblivion's been out over a year and you still can't get a used copy for less than 60$ CDN
- Xieg, on 10/11/2007, -14/+29Atleast Sony is trying...
- silverwolfe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12I doubt a price cut with that big warranty fiasco.
- omniatlas, on 10/11/2007, -8/+20you can buy my wii if you want. Haven't touched it since I got my PS3. Trust me, the hand waggling thing wears off after awhile.
- Zoxy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16If a person doesn't want Motorstorm it would be cheaper to spend the 100 bucks on a 120-160 gb HD
- djSyndrome, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Yes, you can redownload purchased content again. Sony isn't nearly as tight with DRM as MS is, for once.
- cconger, on 10/11/2007, -13/+24My Wii and my 360 both died in the past week, the drought of my gaming while waiting on my warranties and the new pricedrop might mean a black behemoth will be in my living room pretty soon.
- Lasereth, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14With no games? How about the Wii then? It has Twilight Princess and...Wii Sports.
- Jofaba, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11It's very limited. There are 21 movies to choose from in all, and then it's further broken down into 5 categories. So for example, for your first movie you have the choices of either: 1) The Guardian, 2) Pearl Harbor, 3) Invincible, and 4) Chicken Little. There are three choices for movie 2, four for movie 3, four for movie 4, and 6 for movie 5.
http://www.bluraysavings.com/ for details.
And you probably should push any ideas of selling them on eBay out your mind as the market will be flooded with the more marketable movies because of this promotion (which runs through till 09/30/07 - Septimus, on 10/11/2007, -6/+16How did you afford to post on the internets? Did you sell your sister?
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Where did you hear that? That's complete BS. The BluRay player is superb, and the fact that you're hooked to the net via wifi makes updating the firmware in the future easy and fast, which means you don't need to worry about your BluRay player becoming obsolete. The BluRay player in the PS3 is fantastic.
- Pinionist, on 10/11/2007, -6/+15Wii is OVERPRICED - it's last gen console sold as new. Capisce?
And 360 is not likely got get a price cut since 3-year-warranty thing. It cost MS a hell a lot of money. - bcrich999, on 10/11/2007, -12/+21I never owned a PS1 or PS2, so I am in no way a Sony Loyalist, but I feel the PS3 is worth it (at least for me). With the old $600 price tag (when I bought it), I gave $250 for blu-ray (easily worth it), $250 for PS3 (not worth it yet) and $100 for PS2 (no doubt its worth it). Ninja Gaiden Sigma is probably the first really good game for it (I dont care for FPS on consoles yet, so Resistance can be placed on list for others). In about 2-3 months, more games will start rolling out, and this will be the console to get. Even if PS3 fails completely, they will have first rolled out MGS4, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted as well as few other games. I'd be content as it would probably take me over a year to beat them all. I swear, once you have the money to buy this crap, you never have time anymore!
As for the 80GB, i just don't understand the logic behind it. Is that even a step up? Why not a 120GB-160GB. They should have kept the 20 GB so they could have reduced its cost to $399 or even $429. Now that would help it sell! - ibeetle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Not only does it not violate the warranty, but the instructions on how to upgrade the hard drive are included in the PS3 instruction manual and on the Playstation 3 website.
Sony almost counts its hard drive upgradability as a feature and encourages it. - silverwolfe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8It's a special Blu Ray promotion.
If you buy a certain model of Blu Ray player (the PS3 is one of them) then you get 5 free Blu Ray movies. - Soulglow, on 10/11/2007, -12/+20Still can't afford it.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8That doesn't make any sense considering you can install any standard 2.5 SATA drive in the thing and upgrade the space yourself.. safely, without voiding the warranty.
- m4szyman, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12I have a Wii and aside from Twilight Princess and Paper Mario there is nothing worth playing on the console right now. PS3 has Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Resistance, Virtua Fighter, Motorstorm, as well as a bunch of the multiplatform games that the 360 has (Tony Hawk, Armored Core, Oblivion, Fight Night, etc) so I dont see your point. Aside from Gears of War what "significantly good games" does the 360 have right now anyways?
- Septimus, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12No buy mine! Hand wiggling crappy games is great. Honest!
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Not really...$500 is where the PS3 should be and should have been all along. That's a fair price for what you're getting.
- GawtMilk, on 10/11/2007, -5/+12PS3's online service is getting improved daily. The 360's online price isn't getting reduced daily. You're putting money into something that's declining in value.
- fallenone05, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7they didn't lie, they said " there's no current announcement at this time", which is what every company says to avoid announcing an announcement prematureraly. Lying is what Peter Moore did when saying that the 360's failure rate was only 3%.
- jacksons98, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9I'd also add for PS3 Rainbow Six Vegas, F1, the Darkness, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma.
- djbumunltd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Maybe it'll include controllers with rumble. Probably still not worth the extra $100 though.
- djSyndrome, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Stop listening to XBots and maybe you'll learn something. The PS3's Blu-Ray player looks great, and now that it outputs BD at 720p natively, looks much nicer on mid-range TVs.
- Flunk, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Bah, what about other countries where its still nearly double the US price?
- djSyndrome, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7The price of the 60 GB model was cut by $100. That's a 16.6% P-R-I-C-E C-U-T. Adding another SKU on top doesn't negate the fact that the 60GB is now a better deal today than it was yesterday. For most people, the 60GB contains everything they need out of the box.
And as far as 'finances tightening' goes, I'd say whatever money Sony has lost on the PS3 has been completely overshadowed by the 1+ billion dollars Microsoft just ***** over the 360 - on top of the losses they have already incurred in the division to date. - charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8And pictures!! Which honestly, is the best use of this, outside of the music thing. Pictures on an HDTV in 1080 are SUPERB looking. Sony's slide shows, with some music playing, all via wifi on your network are really quite good. The slide show works well, and people are usually amazed at seeing their pictures blown up that large, and looking so damn good. Doing the streaming thing is also extremely easy.
- Septimus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7If you do upgrade the HDD in the PS3, can you redownload everything you have purchased as you can do with Live? I'd hope so as the upgrade option is nice.
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I'll let you know, in the meantime I'm going to be playing some great games in 1080p on my LCD for the next 4 years while you wait for the price to drop that low, and you have fun with your messy textures, crappy physics, and almost no new games on your PS2 or whatever you're going to play for the next four years with very limited games being released for the last gen systems.
- Septimus, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9It's the best on the market.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Wii doesn't really have any games either, yet that outsells pretty much everything.
- Pinionist, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11Wii is next gen system ? With last gen technology ?
