- inactive, on 01/24/2009, -33/+128Before I get buried, I guess I should explain.
I feel being free, having dedicated game servers versus Live's Peer to peer, less draconian DRM (PS3 lets you download content to 5 systems, 360 only lets you on 1 without jumping through hoops like their DRM tool, or redownloading your profile each time you switch systems), a web browser with flash, vastly superior accessory support (for webcams and microphone headsets) put PS3's network capabilities ahead of 360's.
I'm not saying PS3 couldn't improve by copying a few things from 360 (like the cross game voice chat, gamercards that go in your forum signatures, and that 5 star rating system) just that last gen I bought multiplatform games for XBOX because of Live (and superior graphics/framerate, the hard drive), but this gen Live doesn't offer enough over PS3 to be worth any cost. - inactive, on 01/24/2009, -72/+164"That said, the PS3 is still a long way from being the online equal of the Xbox 360"
I stopped there, couldn't take them seriously after that. - 3sicasity, on 01/25/2009, -32/+79PSN is fine. I even prefer the psn arcade games over xbla.
- Zamfir, on 01/25/2009, -23/+68Works awesome for me, I love the PSN! ...and it's FREE :) The downloadable PSN games are much better too.
- xprojects, on 01/25/2009, -19/+50All valid points, but for every positive there is a negative:
Dedicated game servers on PSN aren't future proof or cost-effective, they'll eventually go away and with it, online play for that title. Peers can't setup servers, so it's not as effective as with PC gaming. EA uses dedicated servers with some of their sports titles like Tiger Woods, and Tiger Woods 06 servers went offline a couple years ago, rendering the online play in the game obsolete.
The browser is completely irrelevant to gaming - it's a nice feature, but if you want to go into that area of things, the Xbox has a far superior media center aspect (even my Mac connects and shares movies and music with it), and has Netflix, which, if you're a subscriber is freaking awesome.
Also, you overlooked the fact that you can stream music as a custom soundtrack into any game with the Xbox, and that you can set up parties and move from game to game without disconnecting or regrouping, share photos using free downloads from XBL, and even use the web to send and receive messages on your Xbox Live account, among other smaller features like being able to browse the game library of other users and other such niceties PSN hasn't built in yet, presumably because there's no one paying for it. - Zergvasion, on 01/25/2009, -10/+37Who the hell cares anymore?
Pay for the console that you think you will enjoy.
Personally, I went through a Wii (sold), then a PS3 (sold), then I finally picked up a 360. It wasn't until then that I had found the experience that I had been looking for.
My reasons for getting rid of my Wii and PS3 shouldn't matter, because in the end I found the system that was right for me. - Ramzy, on 01/25/2009, -21/+48I think, for the most part, IGN are completely right. Quite literally what has set the XBOX apart from every other console is its seamless, integrated, trouble free online experience.
Games, chat, messages, friends, updates, in game dashboard, parties, lobbies, matchmaking... All of that comes standard in XBL.
By no means am i saying that the PS3 sucks... Hell no. I own a 360 and a PS3... But at the end of the day, XBL is far superior to PSN at this point (Read: At this current point in time. Things could improve.)
Sony are already playing catch-up with features such as an in-game dashboard, trophies, and services such as PSN Home. Give them some time and they'll probably come up with something good.
At the end of the day, i ***** love this competition. Microsoft trying to out do Sony... And Sony trying to out do Microsoft. Awesome news for us gamers :D - Pugmonkeys, on 01/25/2009, -9/+31Buried for using "like" the way a valley girl would.
- glhf, on 01/25/2009, -3/+24Kind of unrelated to PSN but I wish the PS3 allowed you to sign in a user per controller the way Xbox does. When I go to my friends house we play madden and each person logs into a account on his xbox. This allows madden to track our wins/loses/etc. On my PS3 only one account is logged in per session so there is no tracking. Same problem with a lot of games like LBP. It'd be cool if each person who came over could save their LBP to a user account on the PS3.
I just got a PS3 so maybe there is someway to do this that I haven't found yet. - PopASquatt, on 01/25/2009, -3/+24I'm curious what did the Xbox get?
- Nephersir7, on 01/25/2009, -25/+45The PS3 hardware is awesome and Sony surprised me a lot by making its system standards-compliant and relatively open and reliable. I was really skeptical at first but now im sold. There is a lot of ways in which the software (specifically the online side) could have been better, but the great thing is that it actually can be made better via updates as its life is still beginning.
On the other side, the 360 hardware is doomed to be inferior (unless MS releases a v2.0 of some kind (which couldnt be cost-effective)), and the fact that you need to pay for playing online puts a lot of pressure on MS, which not only needs to make it not only the best, but also need to be far ahead of the ps3. That was a good short-term ojective, but the 360 has not the same multi-core processing power of the ps3 to improve its background -running processes in ointensive online-gaming situations, nor does it have the same HDD space to store updates.
I must also mention that in 2009, the 360's lack of wifi (the $90 external adapter is a joke) makes it very undesirable in many homes. If the two consoles were equally priced (even though i think the price difference feels justified) I think we would see much more ps3 sales than there currently are, and i think that situation could happen very soon - lawh77, on 01/25/2009, -12/+29I personally prefer my PS3 over other consoles, I have played on a wii and Xbox 360 and just don't enjoy them as much as the PS3. To be fair at the end of the day its truly down to personal taste I love the inbuilt blueray drive and the general look/style of the PS3.
- JollyDumple, on 01/25/2009, -11/+27I don't know anything about any of this stuff, but I do know that Warhawk is an incredible game and it works perfectly online. That's pretty much all that matters to me.
- Dagolith, on 01/25/2009, -5/+21Why are PS fans bitching about a B? Last time I checked that's a pretty good score...
- dandonia, on 01/25/2009, -5/+20The PS3 is a vastly superior media center - I can't believe you would even question that. Blu-ray, Wireless networking - take care of the hardware side and more codecs and the ability to install linux take care of the rest. More over, I can copy my music, pictures and video's straight to my PS3 hard drive. It lets me visit sites like youtube, youporn, chooseandwatch.com, etc.
You threw in Netflix which requires you to have two subscriptions and is american only - should I count playtv? Hell I could throw in PS3iPlayer which is what I watched the American Election on and the inaguration. I mean - come on. Anyone that thinks the 360 is a better media center than the PS3 - has very little knowledge of the PS3's capablities.
Hell I didn't even mention the ability to swap out your hdd for a 500gb or stream to the PSP from anywhere or even the funky picture album software that came in the last update.
---------------
As for the future proofing of games - some 360 games have had online play removed so that argument is shot down.

I can't believe you think "using the web to send messages to xbox live" trumps full email support with full keyboard and mouse support. Here's a hint - using my PS3 I can sign into messanger and talk to you while you are on live - the difference is, I can use any keyboard I have lying around and you have to buy a specific one from MS. Hell I can even sign into xbox live on my PS3 using the browser- not that I have any need for it though - now that I am back to silver.
------------------------
Live has some nice features that should be implemented into PSN but the PSN has far more features that should be in live and it doesn't cost money to use em. - xboxing, on 01/25/2009, -4/+18After 30+ hours of Resistance 2 co-op with the greatest bunch of new friends I made on PSN, there's no one can tell me that PSN sucks. The majority of experiences I've had on Live, I've gotten screamed at, put down and cursed at. No thanks.
- arrogantsob, on 01/25/2009, -3/+17I think the people who care (read: me), want to avoid having to buy three consoles to find the one that's right for us. So no, I'm actually very interested in knowing your reasons for getting rid of your PS3.
- WhereAmI, on 01/25/2009, -10/+23Not just webcams and microphone headsets, but PC remotes too. Not the 360 PC remote, that didn't follow any standards, but others and to be specific this one I have from Logitech works.
That 5 star thing is bs anyway, I rated someone down once and they went up from 3 to 5 stars. - NGliam, on 01/25/2009, -6/+19@matty, whereas my experience with the browser is excellent. It's obviously not as good as Firefox or Chrome but it's great for a console browser (especially if you use a keyboard and mouse, but even without). I've only ever watched one thing on the PS3 and that was using Remote Play with my PSP - so I was watching it on my PSP using my PS3 (because the PSP flash player isn't as good) - and that played great. I've watched countless youtube videos too which have played great.
- 3sicasity, on 01/25/2009, -5/+18castle crashers is awsome, though.
- JayD16, on 01/25/2009, -4/+16@albo7
To be fair, both LIVE and PSN support server/client and P2P. They are taken care of by the developer though. EA, for example, hosts all their servers. - RetepNamenots, on 01/25/2009, -3/+14Nobody, but it's not there at the moment...
- DarkSim, on 01/25/2009, -7/+18That's why they're not equally priced, though, isn't it? Believe it or not, some people DON'T want to play online, or DON'T have wireless, so why should they pay for all those things? No-one's forcing you to pay for the subscription, or the wireless adapter, so why complain? (Although I agree the wireless adapter is overpriced, I just use a long ethernet cable) Also:
"That was a good short-term ojective, but the 360 has not the same multi-core processing power of the ps3 to improve its background -running processes in ointensive online-gaming situations" makes no sense. What has processing power got to do with running a network game? What "background processes"? It's a games console, not a PC. - danwallace, on 01/25/2009, -6/+17Apparently CollapseControl has never clicked on a PS3 article on Digg before and been witness to the hordes of Xbox fans trash-talking Sony like there's no tomorrow despite not owning a PS3 at all.
- xprojects, on 01/25/2009, -5/+16Also, let it be known that I have both of those consoles, and I think both services are fine. For my needs, I spend more time on Live than on PSN, by a lot.
- dandonia, on 01/26/2009, -4/+14@ DRM Idiots
The 360 lets you download any game you own to any 360 your account is on. The problem comes when you download a game to a second system then take your that system offline. So in my case, I bought a lot of games on my first 360 - then it died and I had it replaced. I redownloaded all the games I owned on my new system - then went to uni. They blocked xbox live use on the network and so all my games stopped working.
If my console got banned from xbox live - I would no longer be able to play the games I own.
360 DRM is beyond ridiculas. - dandonia, on 01/25/2009, -3/+12lol, you made it that far. The first page started talking about all the different updates that a new owner would need to make. I bought my machine - updated it once to get the new features. I didn't need to do several updates - just one. What they described is perhaps true if you bought a ps3 a few years back and havn't updated it since.
They also seemed against regular updates - which boggles the mind. Why would I want to wait for 10 features to be complete before using the first 9? Then they bitch that it would take too long to download a full game like Burnout because it would be quicker to drive to the store. WTF? I live next door to Game, it would be quicker to go get it on bluray - but I would much prefer to download it and have it on the system. The conveniance of it all - I mean past 5 at night when Game is shut, what am I to do? Besides - they are not stopping you driving to the store- just offering up an alternative. I honestly wish all games were released on the PSN and XBLM - I know it's lazy but I hate disc swapping - besides it's why I bought a 500gb drive for my machine.
IGN biased *****, notice that they don't have PSN section but do have an XBL section. They gave Oblivion a lower mark on the PS3 dispite the review showing better graphics, 10 hours extra content, less frame rate issues, less popin, etc. Their awards were ***** too.
Best Action Game 360: GTA IV
Best Action Game PS3: Metal Gear Solid
So on a system which has MGS and GTA Metal Gear Solid wins
IGN Over All Best Action Game: GTA IV
errr WTF? Why didn't it win on the PS3 then?
IGN Over All Readers Choice: Best Action Game: Metal Gear Solid
---
Dispite my above comments I do agree with the over all grade and a lot of the things said on the last page. The PS3 has soooo much potential and I hope they meet it. There are plenty of improvements that need to be made, faster network, manditory feature implementation, invite system for all games, etc. - danwallace, on 01/25/2009, -4/+13The 360 has its strong points and the PS3 has theirs. Just buy the system you prefer and get over the other one. Who gives a *****? I didn't buy a 360 because everyone I know has had theirs RROD on them at least once. My PS3 is a sturdy, powerful machine and it has all the games I want to play (COD4/COD5, NHL09, GTA4, Resistance 2 and soon Killzone2), free online play that has never once let me down, great DLC and on top of that I wanted a multimedia machine and for that purpose the PS3 is years ahead of the Xbox. The browser feature is something I use all the time (nabolister.com is a great site for finding a good flash link to stream that episode of Lost or The Office that I missed and it all works perfectly, along with full-screen capabilities, on the PS3). The Xbox is just inferior in terms of hardware, there's no way I would ever pay extra to have Wifi support which is really a standard IMO and I also refuse to pay a monthly fee for ANY sort of online play after I have already shelled out 60 bucks for the game.
As far as I'm concerned, the only thing the Xbox has going for it is a couple of decent titles like the Gears and Halo series, but for all the things I love about my PS3 (and I haven't even mentioned half of them here ie: PSP remote play), I can live without Master Chief. - JollyDumple, on 01/26/2009, -2/+11Except that won't happen, and even if it does I would gladly play the next Warhawk.
- somesthetic, on 01/25/2009, -4/+12You have to use both systems to really get a feel for the difference.
If you have any friends on Xbox 360, they're far more prominently featured, and it's a lot easier to jump directly into a game with them, since it's built into the UI instead of relying on each game to do it.
The online gaming is far more consistent on 360 too. How Sony managed to mangle the online for Socom and LittleBigPlanet for the first week (more for Socom) is beyond me, even after they had betas to test these things, but stuff like that really makes you wish they knew what they were doing. - Crashwithuhk, on 01/25/2009, -4/+11I pretty much only buy single player games for my PS3 because I prefer XBL for the multiplayer ones. The fact that the PS3 accepts pretty much any bluetooth headset and still has less people talking during games than on Live shows that they really should have packed something with the PS3.
That and I also was surprised the first time I was browsing through the PSN games and noticed that every game didn't have a free demo as with XBLA. Considering you can get a year of Live for $30 if you wait for the right time, it's completely worth the money.
Also, PSN needs some version of the 360's party system. Then again, that would first require a decent amount of it's users to actually have a mic for it. - rikwakefield, on 01/25/2009, -6/+13Thinking of how Playstations usually perform, do you really feel the PS3 is playing an A game? B is an achievement IMO.
- dandonia, on 01/26/2009, -3/+10Lol, check metacritic's top 5 for both machines - notice that the PS3 has 2 exclusives while the 360 has none. Notice also that 4 of the top 5 PS3 games are from last year, while 4 of the top 5 360 lists were from 2007/2006.
Get your head out of your ass Idiot.
Metal Gear Solid - is mainly a one player game - with added multiplayer. There is a reason it was the ign readers choice for game of the year on any system. - Spire3660, on 01/25/2009, -5/+12Excellent steering wheel support as well. Im using my GT4/PS2 force feedback wheel on my PS3, its awesome. Miles ahead of that crappy MS wheel.
- nickert0n, on 01/26/2009, -2/+9I have a 360 and PS3, I prefer PS3.
- theaceoffire, on 01/25/2009, -2/+9@ mattyice11
"The 'browser with flash' feature completely sucked"
Try going to youtube.com/tv
It only works on the PS3 and the Wii, but it is a version of Youtube built specifically for a browser connected to a TV. It works great! - bjs3171, on 01/26/2009, -3/+10i care about games. Playstation and the PSN both have better games. Who cares if Xbox has twice the games when 2/3 of them are generic FPSs? i own both systems.
- crashingechelon, on 01/25/2009, -1/+7Yes it's true, all of those features no longer exist in current models of the PS3.
- Darunium, on 01/26/2009, -0/+6Because IGN is always a legitimate source of game reviews.
1up.com, or better yet don't buy into the score of reviews at all, check the forums see what the people out there with PS3's and XBOX360s think of their systems if you need a comparison before purchase. - kewldewd, on 01/26/2009, -1/+7*****. I've played 35+ hours on Resistance2 and have never witnessed anything but just cool banter and conversation....unlike Live
What games are you playing on PSN? What's your ID name?
~Wiggum - ChinezePanda, on 01/26/2009, -3/+9I love my 360... but..
My PS3... I'll take you and your dedicated game servers any day. - rikwakefield, on 01/25/2009, -21/+27That's a fact. People who don't have it will digg you down by default. Which is a shame.
- grantmoore3d, on 01/25/2009, -6/+12PSN = free, that's all I really care about
- Nathrat, on 01/25/2009, -5/+10The only problem is, they're not the cheapest blu-ray player in town anymore, though still the best value, but if you're not a gamer, who cares.
- AmazingSteve, on 01/25/2009, -3/+8Sony's problems are twofold. Not only did they BADLY miscalculate what gamers wanted and how much they were willing to spend for it and drop the ball on this generation, but now they've got to start thinking next Gen. If MS beats Sony out of the gate again, my guess is a lot of the "just wait until" crowd is going to jump ship based on the fact that "just wait until" hasn't really panned out in any Grand Slam kind of way.
- Harbinger67, on 01/25/2009, -4/+9You can upgrade the PS3's HDD to any size you want using a standard OEM 2.5" hdd. I don't care how big the 360's hdd is, the PS3 will always win in the storage dept.
Plus, there are about...THREE solutions for networking your 360. Ethernet, which doesn't work for everyone; using a wireless router with a tweaked firmware, which is too complicated for mainstream use; and the wildly overpriced WiFi adapter. So much for zillions.
Now run along fanboy, I think I just heard mommy open her wallet for the next month of Live for you. - bjs3171, on 01/26/2009, -1/+6pixeljunk games alone make PSN arcade games better.
- inactive, on 01/25/2009, -12/+17"Exactly. The Positives of XBL severely outweigh PSN's good points."
No they don't. - Harbinger67, on 01/25/2009, -4/+9I will agree that Live is a pretty slick system when all is said and done, with one exception.
Try canceling your subscription sometime. I only use prepaid Live cards now because at least those automatically expire. Using a credit card to subscribe to Live means that eventually you will have to call up Live support and cancel it over the phone, which is like pulling teeth (out of a mouth that barely speaks English, btw) - dandonia, on 01/25/2009, -2/+7The worst thing about digg, is that people digg you down without explaining why. What did I say that was wrong?
