- JDoggqx, on 10/10/2007, -6/+40Two reasons really:
1: I don't have unlimited space or power connectors by my TV. So a BC PS3 is much more appealing than a PS2 and PS3.
2: Because my PS2 died a year ago. - jacksons98, on 10/10/2007, -19/+52You are exactly why the removed the PS2 ability. You already have a PS2 so why charge you for a feature you don't need. Gamers have been telling Sony they want a less expensive PS3 and that is what Sony is delivering. I never had a PS2 so I got a PS3 partially because of that ability. It sounds better than the reality. The reality is you won't play PS2 games once you start enjoying some PS3 HD goodness.
- evozero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+31There's one point that people seem to be misunderstanding. Simply because Sony is selling a lower spec ps3 without backwards compatibility does not mean the higher spec versions will also be lacking this. I'd speculate that sony will sell one PS3 for people who want one cheap(40gig), and another for the people who want things like ps2 bc (60/80gig). I haven't seen anything concrete that indicates sony only plans on selling the 40gig once the others are sold out.
- quomen, on 10/10/2007, -8/+37The truth is, people are always going to find something to complain about.
- charlescheese, on 10/10/2007, -11/+38You must really find trolling to be a fun hobby.
- jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24I think reliability should've been there from the beginning..
- Mist0r_Wiggles, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Sony is making this way more complicated than it should be.
- drizzlelicious, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18If you don't like it, stop whining and buy the one that does have backwards compatability.
- jacksons98, on 10/10/2007, -6/+21Well you have to buy games to enjoy it. I own Oblivion, Resistance, Motorstorm, F1, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Warhawk, GRAW2, Rainbow 6:Vegas & Heavenly Sword. For PSN games I like Super Stardust HD, Blast Factor and Poker. I've enjoyed all of them.
- djSyndrome, on 10/10/2007, -18/+31"The reality is you won't play PS2 games once you start enjoying some PS3 HD goodness."
I bought my PS3 eight months ago, and I'm still waiting for this 'reality' you speak of to set in. - MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -5/+18PS2 games look and sound slightly better on the PS3, the PS3 maintains the aspect ratio of the 4:3 PS2 games on a 16:9 TV, it allows you to use a wireless controller, and it's one less machine you need to keep hooked up. Not to mention those that were never able to get a PS2.
Whether you use it or not, backwards compatibility is a huge feature for a lot of people, and it's foolish to remove it. - arunforce, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15LOL, sounds like something a Sony Executive would say.
- SonicBoom1000, on 10/10/2007, -6/+17One of the main issues with it was price you tard.
- jeremy1967, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15"Those looking for a system with good games might look into the expensive version as well... since thats the only version that plays the only great games available for the ps3 (the ps2 games)"
Those looking to pass the time waiting for their bricked 360 to come back from repair can troll PS3 threads. - JDoggqx, on 10/10/2007, -18/+29I'm very disappointed in the removal of backward compatibility. That was a huge factor in why I got a PS2 a little over a year after it came out. Now Sony's next step will be to remove all PS3 backwards compatibility as a cost saving measure.
- tomthepirate, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13We've had this PS3 on our system at work for some time now, they will continue to sell the normal one. This is merely a cheap option for people that either do not care about the backwards compatibillity or extra space and just want to play PS3 games without selling their kindey.
- ahawks, on 10/10/2007, -7/+18.... you are aware that the games are blu-ray disks, right?
If you take away the bu-ray player, you essentially have a $400 paperweight. - chrisinsocalif, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Since the Wii is outselling both the Xbox and the PS3, looks like it will be a good move on Sony's part. With a more affordable machine, more people are eligible to purchase one.
- GhostRican, on 10/10/2007, -19/+29I'll be picking one up, although it makes more sense to wait till '08 when you'll get DualShock 3 and some actual games to play.
- mc7winkie, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Considering sigma is a remake and you can get in on the original xbox... that one garners a serious meh.
- SonicBoom1000, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13If you want BC get the 60 GB version, if you already have a PS2 like 120 million other people get this.
- Dracusis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Reliability isn't a feature, it should have been there to begin with, the same goes for HDMI.
If you want to make a comparison, lets view how long it took MS to fix the RROD issues (still unconfirmed as fixxed) compared to how long it took Sony to negotiate a licence and bring back rumble:
Microsoft took 22 Months vs Sony who took only 9 Months... - coheedcollapse, on 10/10/2007, -8/+16I think a blu-ray drive is far more important of a feature than backwards compatibility. Sorry. I already own a PS2, and if I didn't I could pick one up for a minimal fee at any pawn shop. Having an incredibly large amount of space on a disk will end up being a great move as the console evolves.
Also, lets be truthful. How much backwards play did you get on your PS2? I played maybe 5 games total, one of them being FF9 which came out in the same week that the PS2 was released (or somewhere near that). If it weren't for my bad habit of picking up way too many RPG's than I could handle at a time (I have the whole SMT series to finish....), I wouldn't even need it on the PS3. - hplasm, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11You keep trying, but deep down they still regret buying an EggBox..
- HappyScrappy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8It doesn't play Guitar Hero I, II or 80s (well, not with guitars, which is what counts), so for a lot of people, the extra $100 is wasted, even if they do want to play PS2 games.
Many people would be better saving the $100 and putting it towards a $129 PS2 if necessary. - Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Will people ever stop bitching?
- Zoxy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9They added features the PS3 already has and the PS3 still has wifi and a hi-def player.
- ShogunWarPig, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11owned
- mythicflux, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Then they would run into the same size limitation issue Microsoft is running into. There are video game titles coming out that are simply too big to fit on a single DVD. Take a look at LA Noir the developers have mentioned that they aren't supporting Xbox 360 because they don't want to have to ship 2 DVD's. There will be a PS3 version and a PC version.
- djSyndrome, on 10/10/2007, -6/+13Oh I own several PS3 games, including VF5 and Tekken:DR, and I'll probably pick up Sega Rally Revo this week. I'm just not enjoying it that much more than the PS2 games I'm playing right now (Guilty Gear Accent Core and Persona 3). Great graphics do not necessarily make a better game.
- mustang460, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7there not screwing anyone over you can still buy the 499 or 599 sku, there simply adding a cheaper option for those of us who have ps2's
- coheedcollapse, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8The thing is - you still have a choice. If Backwards Compatability and a bigger hard drive is worth $100 to you, then you can buy the more expensive version. if not, pick up the 40 gig and you're fine.
To tell you the truth, if I didn't have so many unfinished RPG's for my PS2, I probably wouldn't even need BC.My PS2 saw a whole five PS1 games in it's whole lifetime, and toward the end I barely even used the feature. - kenvsryu, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9you could have gotten a 60gb ps3 through sonystyle for $350 in August.
http://ps3mods.blogspot.com/2007/08/60gb-ps3-for-3 ... - omgroffles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I concur on all accounts of this post.
- clark24, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Hopefully that means $199-299 standalone Blu-Ray in time for Christmas. If not, maybe I will pick up a PS3. If I'm going to spend $399 on a Blu-Ray player, it might as well play games too.
- mythicflux, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The PS3 80GB was not full software emulation. It was hardware assistance. Originally the PS3 had the Emotion Engine (PS2 CPU) and Graphic Synthesizer (PS2 GPU). When the 80GB model came out Sony stripped the EE but left the GS. This meant the 80GB PS3 emulates the PS2 CPU but has a real PS2 Graphics processor for game to use. Since they pulled out the GS in the 40GB model they probably don't want to create another emulator or are working on it and may release it later.
- Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Maybe they should offer a download for those who decide they want BC, you know, an emulator of sorts. They have a PS2 HDD "emulator" for those PS2 games that required the HDD.

* Wipeout HD - DarkPrince11, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Still waiting for it to hit $299. Thats when I'll snag one :D
(It's not that I don't think its worth it (I'd be willing to pay up to $500 for that machine), but I'm broke :-P - drizzlelicious, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5No it doesn't. The holiday season is coming up, and the PS3 needs to compete. Although I can't imagine how hard it could be to introduce the dualshock 3 now instead of next year
- shawnanigans, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I will get a PS3 the moment LittleBigPlanet come out. Plus I'm Canadian so I'm also hoping for a decrease in price to be on par with the US dollar. And a pony while I'm dreaming.
- sleeknerve, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6a used ps2 cost 30 dollars, and who doesnt have a friend that still has a working ps2
- bilbravo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6How many Xbox 360 SKUs are there? How many have there been?
- xXMetalJesusXx, on 10/10/2007, -7/+12finally...a reasonably priced Blu-Ray player...
Who knows, I might even play a game on it some time... - Pureeviljester, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5if the 80g version goes to $499, i'll pay the extra.
- nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6great, but they said Japanese DualShock 3's would be compatible with American PS3's, so you fail.
- sleeknerve, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5that will happen in two more years, they are probably losing money in these models just to gain them back in games
- sleeknerve, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4ps3 is a blu ray player for 50 dollars more without halo and with metal gear
- sUGArDawg, on 10/10/2007, -14/+18So, Microsoft cuts the 360's price while adding features and Sony cuts the PS3's price by removing features?
