- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -21/+145because with that update, your system would brick
- samard2002, on 06/30/2008, -33/+146Anyone know the reason why this firmware update was called v2.40 and not v3.60?
- sexualaj, on 06/30/2008, -12/+96You have to hand it over to Sony, They listened and delivered.
Kudos, - soundsofreason, on 06/30/2008, -34/+102Blah, blah, xbox had this ***** since launch, blah, blah, xbox>PS3, blah, blah, I dry hump my 360, blah, blah, blah.
God, I'm getting so sick of this *****.
Many people have recently gotten a PS3 thanks to the price drops, firmware updates, and MGS4.
I don't think anyone gives a ***** anymore that the xbox had in-game XMB three years ago with it's launch. The way I look at it, that was 3 missed years to fix their god damn hardware problems (another reason people are buying PS3s).
You like your 360? Cool. I like my PS3, so could you please go get yourself a tall glass of shut the hell up? - zombiepig, on 06/30/2008, -8/+47Nice - a clock :) Such an obvious little thing but such an improvement!
- bhattsan, on 06/30/2008, -7/+44OH SNAP!

- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -14/+45And it's all free
- soundsofreason, on 06/30/2008, -14/+43Oh, shut the ***** up and go stick your dick in that useless HD DVD drive.
- skoles, on 06/30/2008, -0/+23Never has console fanboydom lashings been subtle. Free internets all around!
- RedHawk911, on 06/30/2008, -7/+30I think that the XMB is the most simple UI you can have, It's so easy to navigate trough. The 360s on the other hand is not as good in my opinion. But that's just me.
- BinaryDelt, on 06/30/2008, -6/+28Because you don't have to pay for it.
- Yakovzoya, on 06/30/2008, -4/+25I agree. Overall I love my PS3, but there are little nagging things here and there that it seems silly not to have included. On the other hand, I'm on my 3rd 360, my first two died, and I'm still using my first PS3.
- krische, on 06/30/2008, -6/+26Actually Microsoft was involved in the programming of HD-DVD's interactive API known as HDi
- MWilson1992, on 06/30/2008, -10/+29I see what you did there...
- digggggggggg, on 06/30/2008, -0/+16After seeing the 360 at a friend's place, I realized that the 360's power brick is like the third of the size of the system.
I mean, sure, power bricks are everywhere nowadays, but good gravy that thing is huge.
Just making an observation, nothing else. - krische, on 06/30/2008, -4/+19I would agree. The XMB seems more clean and simple. Where as the 360s blade system tries and jam as many buttons and advertisements on the individual blades or screens.
- caborobo, on 06/30/2008, -11/+25My point is why is it that it took so long for them to do this on "the most advanced computer gaming system." I own every major gaming console and it just annoys me that they promised so much in the beginning and delivered so little. The little things matter to me. I love the gamerscore on the 360. That is pretty much the reason I have stuck with buying games on the xbox. That and the games look about the same between the ps3 and the 360. That's just me though. ;)
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -8/+22well you certainly can't break you ps3 just by playing games
- theaceoffire, on 06/30/2008, -1/+13I like reliable hardware and cheap upgrades.
I don't feel that makes me a douchebag, and honestly you came off as rather insulting.
Besides, why can one item not be great if something else exists that you think is better? - krische, on 06/30/2008, -8/+18Well you can do it all for free instead of $50/year. Is that better?
- MWilson1992, on 06/30/2008, -3/+12Just wanted to point that when Eric clicks "triangle" while messaging Jeff, the menu that is brought up has seven options under it as opposed to the six currently available. This extra option could be for bringing up the selected users profile/trophies, or maybe it's for voice chat...
- EdwardBella, on 06/30/2008, -3/+115 times ~50 dollars = 250$
- ChinezePanda, on 07/01/2008, -1/+9So the main reason why I play my 360 is for the achievements.. KINDA
Now my PS3 has trophies... *****... Looks like Ill be playing my PS3 more than I will ever play my 360 again.
It's been a fun 3 years.... minus the 3 months of RROD downtime... but sorry xbox.. there was a reason why i didnt buy the first box... Ebay here you come. - adamchristopher, on 06/30/2008, -9/+17I have to disagree. Although I am very happy this update is finally near, I feel this is more of a 'Better late than never" situation. I am pretty sure all of these features were available on the 360 at launch. I would say that this is more of a case of catch-up, rather than "delivering".
- Yakovzoya, on 06/30/2008, -1/+9I own all three consoles, so I use each of them pretty regularly, and I think the PS3 is great in some aspects. In some ways the 360 is better, and in some ways the PS3 is better. I've got issues with the PS3, but the 360 also has problems, especially with their failure rate.
- BlackKnight6, on 06/30/2008, -5/+13And it isn't on the 360? Just to point out, on the 360, all updates, messaging and in game music player are free (silver account) and obviously there from launch. I just think its funny people bring up this being free for the PS3 when all these updates and features mention are free on the 360 as well. You only have to pay to play a game online. All other online features are free on the 360 also.
- cthellis, on 06/30/2008, -1/+8Considering that ability exists in some games already (Rock Band and Eye of Judgement, for instance, pull the messaging system in-game and pass invitations along), I think the capacity is there... it will just need to get patched into games to get it fully supported.
There's a chance we don't know the full extent yet either, but indeed they should be crowing about it if it were universal, so I think there'll be some roll-out messiness going on, as well as getting developers on board as they're finishing up their current titles. - bigbadgoat, on 06/30/2008, -3/+10You know how many days me and every other PS3 owner I know have had to live without games because of a PS3 failure?
0.
Sony is very obviously playing catch-up to XBL, there's no questioning that, but to expect any developer to go from the online interface of the PS2 to an system rivalling XBL at launch is complete horse *****. Are you forgetting that XBL for the Xbox 360 is nothing more than an extension of XBL for the original xbox? Sony had to start from scratch, and has been very pro-active with giving owners constant updates and enhancing the capabilities of the system since launch to get the PSN to a point where now the difference between the PSN and XBL is nearly negligible, in less than two years.
How long did MS take to get what? almost 6 years to get to this point?
How about you start developing some reasonable and reasonable expectations for what a console dev should and should not do.
Then again, you probably don't know the slightest when it comes to game development or console development.
How about you do the world a favor and get the ***** off the internet. If XBL is as great as you say it is, why don't you spend the time you would have spent on digg playing with obscene 12 year old racists.
(P.S. I'm a game developer, so I actually would know these things) - theaceoffire, on 06/30/2008, -3/+10O.o however you can swap directly from one game to another... or to a movie or song...
So they IM that they are playing Resistance 2, and you can jump straight from whatever your playing into it. - McGrude, on 06/30/2008, -2/+9his mom
- mywhitenoise, on 06/30/2008, -3/+10You'd piss me off plenty with Drowning Pool.
- BinaryDelt, on 06/30/2008, -3/+10I'd take stable hardware from day one over trophies and in game chat on day one any day.
- Chris4, on 06/30/2008, -1/+8What do you think...
- j00b, on 06/30/2008, -8/+14I'm so excited and I just can't hide it.
- jbarket, on 06/30/2008, -0/+6I think his point was that XMB is the equivalent of the Xbox 360 Dashboard, thus a PS3 only item (XMB) can't exist in any form on the 360.
That said, it has supported in game media support via the always present side in bar since th beginning.
I'm no fan boy... I bought a PS3 just a few weeks ago (not for MGS4, just was finally time) and I'm glad to see it's coming around with a lot of the features I really like about my 360.
That said, when I first had my 360, there were a number of painfully obvious things that we've received through the big Dashboard updates. - Snokage, on 06/30/2008, -0/+6it seems that for the 360 it turns off game music(if possible) which is a pretty cool feature, hope the ps3 can do this as well.
- FoxOrian, on 06/30/2008, -2/+8Only douchebags who game on the PS3 blindly...?
Judging by the way you wrote your comment, aren't you then a douchebag gamer who games on the 360 blindly? - mywhitenoise, on 06/30/2008, -1/+7http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/06/30/firmware ...
- krische, on 06/30/2008, -5/+10Personally, I don't care for trophies/achievements at all. I play a game for the entertainment value, not to brag to friends about what trophies/achievements I have. So the number of games that support or will support trophies doesn't bother me.
As for invites, I haven't played that many games online, but the few that I have make it easy to play with your friends. Warhawk has a menu to show any games someone in your friends list is in. GTA IV allows you to send invites to anyone in your friends list.
Much like the trophies, I don't care about playing music during a game. I enjoy hearing all of the sound effects and music that add to the entertainment value of a game. And if really felt compelled to, I would just play music over my stereo. But like I said, never cared for it and probably never will.
Now I'm not going to speak on behalf of all PS3 users, but the red ring is probably one of the worst things that could have ever happened. Yes, I know Microsoft is supposedly doing what they can to make the process as painless as possible. But the fact of the matter is, is that it should have never happened in the first place. Microsoft was just in such a damn hurry to get it out the door that they couldn't even finish engineering the damn thing.
Lets use a car for an example. Let's say Ford is in a hurry to compete against Toyota's hybrids. So they manufacture a car and sell it before completing all proper testing and engineering. After a while though, people begin to find out that the engine in the car over heats and complete ceases up the engine and the whole thing is ruined. Worst of all, its a design issue, so all cars are susceptible. Now how would you feel if Ford refuses to recall them, instead just tell you to keep driving until it dies, then get it fixed. - 4LeggedtriPod, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5No. The fans spoke. The Gods delivered.
- Nathrat, on 06/30/2008, -9/+14yeah, this is a feature I've enjoyed on the 360 for quite some time.
- krische, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5I can't imagine there are that many people out there that have a 360 and don't subscribe to Live. So really when you think about it, you are paying $50/year to get enjoyment out of your 360.
- BattleScars, on 06/30/2008, -1/+6I can't stand the 360's interface. Orange, green and blue surrounded by those silver 'blade' thingies, it's ghastly.
- krische, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5Do you have like 500 people in your friends list or something? Just about all the other menus (music, pictures, videos) have options to sort or group the content.
- FoxOrian, on 06/30/2008, -1/+6Eh, that's just splitting hairs. The 360 may not have the PSP/PS3 XMB, but the Dashboard operates along the same lines pretty much. Just a different look.
- ShisouKen, on 06/30/2008, -1/+5When you pay hundreds of dollars for systems that claim to be so ZOMG then yes.
- Arkz, on 06/30/2008, -2/+6i agree with most of your points thought i must say achievements are appealing to me, i don't spend time getting them to brag, i don't care about bragging i just like to spend time to unlock these things, because after you finish a game what have you got? nothing, just your knowledge that you did it, i like to see what my friends have done in games, achievements they unlocked and what they had to do to get them, gives older games reply value too...
Oh and the music too, custom music doesn't stop the games sound effects, just some games have some really bab music, with RPG's i keep to its own music but with racing games your not playing a story, might as well listen to something you enjoy instead of the crap it comes with, when im just driving around on GTA4 i listen to tunes i want to hear instead of the music on the radio which for the most part is rubbish.
As for the 360, they should have fixed the problem a long time ago, i know this, but software wise they launched a year before sony with everything 2.40 is only just implementing. From the get go i could listen to my own music, message people and have a private chat with them while i was playing a different game, sony had a year and brought out a machine that to be honest is slightly inferior in performance but has a blu-ray player which they think is a the big attraction, one thing is sony still doesn't have continuous downloads when you turn the machine off, you need to leave it on to DL stuff, turn a 360 off and it just goes in a low power state and continues downloading. Also looooads of DLC, a significant amount of which is free, like keys to the city on crackdown, barely any PS3 games have any and when they do its overpriced, you can get like a pack of 8 cars on test drive for about £3.50 on the 360, on something on the PS3 like PAIN or Everybodies Golf its about £1 for just 1 new character...
Its things like this which annoy me with sony, everyone loves them yet theyre not getting out enough good games, the DL sucks and/or is overpriced, no standard headset that comes with it, they lie about a lot of things, lots of broken promises... it just gets to me and makes me want to hate them, obviously they have skilled people cause the PS3 is a great machine but they also have lots of fools too. - lastmaster, on 06/30/2008, -3/+7I play consoles, because i enjoy the games...
Is it wrong of me for not giving a ***** about a dashboard or XMB? - 42Vindictive, on 06/30/2008, -6/+10In comparison to...?
