- username9000, on 10/14/2007, -11/+65No backwards compatibility is also confirmed. I am sure this will get buried, but it is a very important distinction for people who think this is just a price drop on a 40 gig PS3.
- Rovient, on 10/14/2007, -8/+35Superb news! I know a lot of people will be upset about the lack of BC, but then again, there's always the 60GB model if you really can't go without. Or you could just keep your PS2!
- jacksons98, on 10/10/2007, -5/+20Yes but gamers in general have been saying they want a less expensive PS3 and Sony is delivering. At least they were smart and kept the harddrive included.
- Modestexcuse, on 10/14/2007, -12/+27I'll be adding a PS3 to my console collection. Thanks Sony! (I don't care about BC, and 2 extra USB ports).
- username9000, on 10/14/2007, -18/+32Funny that backwards compatibility was always something sony fanboys used as a feather in their cap....now it means nothing. lol
- username9000, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15no backwards compatibility at all. The software emulation on the PS3 requires a graphics synthesizer chip that IS NOT in the 40 gig version.
- mythicflux, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14Sony doesn't want the same issue that Microsoft ran into to affect them. Namely that developers start requiring a feature (HDD) for a game causing people to be pissed off because they have to by another accessory.
- jacksons98, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15Almost everyone has a PS2 already. So if your a "gamer" how does that hamper your ability to play games? And if you don't have one you can find them used for about $30-50. Is that really a big deal?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -12/+22€399 40GB SKD, no bundle. (SCEE)
$599 80GB SKD, bundle. (SCEA)
€399 = $565
I am not happy to be living in Europe, with the way that companies price technology.
Even with the same SKD (in America at $399) the difference is nearly $200! - schizogony, on 10/10/2007, -12/+21It loses too many good things.
- merdiesel, on 10/10/2007, -9/+18Was that supposed to be funny?..
if so, don't quit your day job. - JigoroKano, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Yeah and the average Mexican can't afford one either.
- evozero, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12it seems to me that those most gamers already own a ps2. and if gamers don't have one and want a ps2 playback they currently have two options in the form of a 60gb ps3 and 80gb ps3 or to simply buy an inexpensive used ps2.
- thecheatah, on 10/10/2007, -9/+16I am glad I spent $600 on my ps3 and got all the features. You have to remember that the ps3 also upscales ps2 games. Thats like running ps2 games at a higher resolution. Also some of the games which "lag" a little bit on the ps2, work really smooth on the ps3.
- triplehelix, on 10/10/2007, -8/+15sigh. brush up on international economics. you can't make a direct exchange. the dollar has steadily decreased in value compared to the euro, so does that mean the european ps3 has steadily increased in value?
- jacksons98, on 10/10/2007, -10/+17Such as? The harddrive, oh wait that's X360.
- andydumi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Dont forget you can always get a USB hub if you need more of those...
- chocobomog, on 10/10/2007, -8/+14Unless Europeans plan on buying the system with dollars, this comparison is pointless. In simple terms, a European would be paid €20 an hour for the same job that an American would be paid $20 an hour. So €399 to a European would be the same as $400 to an American.
But if they really want to cheat the system, a European could come to America and buy a PS3 for very cheap since the dollar is so weak, but then they would have to worry about the different power supplies... - mokkos, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8If you have an HDTV, I suggest the former even if you already have a PS2. PS2 looks a lot worse on HDTV than on SDTV. PS3 will outputs the PS2 games in progressive scan to make it look close what you used to see on SDTV.
- TjLAXattack, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9"why do you think they are bundling Spiderman 3 with this thing?"
As long as you are aware they also bundled "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" with US 60GB at launch, "Casino Royale" in the EU PS3 launch, and 5 free Blu-ray discs at the launch of the 80GB earlier this year. I know you are trying to make a point, but bundling a movie with this version of the PS3 is nothing new. - RJNavarrete, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Oh, in that case: LOL!
/sarcasm - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+13Well, you have two choices
If you want to have a BC, multi memory, 4 usb ports, buy the 60GB = $499
Vice versa, buy the 40GB = $399
And if you already have a PS2 i suggest the latter. - aegis9975, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8The US dollar is at an all time LOW. Everything looks bad converted back to US dollars.
Canadian dollar is now equal to US dollar, you get 2 dollars for every UK pound and the Euro is at 1.4 to the dollar. There will be a $399 40GB for the US. - santasing, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11The lack of a hard drive affects games because devs have to build games with that limitation in mind that not everyone has ahard drive. What you see on the store shelves is the end result, not what could have been.
- greenmountain, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7It is in the first paragraph of rhe article.
" It's official. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has just announced a new 40GB PS3 which will launch in Europe for the price of €399. It will be available starting October 10th. As predicted, the new model features two USB 2.0 ports rather than four and no longer includes the multi memory card port. Strangely, the model also loses backwards compatibility support for PS2 games." - killerofkiller, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7way to use the same comment again as you did at the top of the page...
buried - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Then why dont you buy the 60GB if you really want to have a backward compatibility and 4 usb ports, common sense dumbass.
- krische, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Ok honestly. The whole "PS3 doesn't have any games" is getting alittle old. How about instead of just going along with the crowd you actually look at what games are out of the PS3. Here's the long list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronology_of_PlaySta ...
Here's a few good ones from the list
Warhawk: Highly addicting, great value, and already out
Uncharted: Looks like alot of fun, coming in the next month
Ratchet and Clank: Looks amazing, coming in the next month
And plenty of cross platform games just in case - Sethbacca, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9I may get one at 399$. I already have a PS2 so no need for BC here, although it would have been nice to be able to get rid of one more set of wires attached to the TV.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+10SlamShut? More like SLAMSLUT, LOLZR I CAN MAED FUNNIE!
- krische, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Good luck finding a PC that can play games in 1080p for $399
- TjLAXattack, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Hm.. ok I actually hadn't heard this. Do you have a link? I apologize for not being informed, I just can't find any more info and everyone seems to be jumping to no BC due to the press release.
Also, does the graphics synthesizer do anything else in the current PS3 models? - andydumi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Thats because its a cheaper system altogether. A 20% VAT on a 300 item is different than on a 600 item.
- andydumi, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Hey at least we have the option to buy a PS2 new, or a PS3 with BC, and still play great PS2 games released today. With MS, the XBOX was thrown off the back of the cart as soon as the X360 appeared... as if it was a leper.
- elqboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Is the most reasonable comment here... I also think Sony is doing good... they giving Gamers options...Now lets see what new complaint they have...
- InitialDMP5, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4wow, you are just going on a hate tirade aren't you? Is your dad Mr. Xbox or something? Do you own stock in Microsoft games division or something? Why are you taking this so personally? Sony lowered the price of their game system to be competitive. They had to drop some features that were either overkill (4 USB ports) or were not used by most PS3 owners (BC) and I think it was a smart move.
If people have waited this long to get a PS3 to get a lower price, I am sure they have been playing their "old" PS2 to pass the time. If they know they won't be able to play the games on the PS3 then they can just hold on to that system. I remember when you got a new game system you got games for that and you put your old system in the closet.
And look back to the 360's library around this time of its lifecycle and really tell me how many good games were out for it? If I remember the 360 didn't really become popular until Gears of War came out. And that was a year later if I recall. Sony is about to hit real big come November. - Evari, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4i dunno ive heard stories of people importing and just using kettle plugs
- nomore, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5http://uk.playstation.com/ps3/news/articles/detail ...
- santasing, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7I have the $500 PS3 with the emotion engine. I used to a PC/XBox gamer. So, I am glad for the EE just so I can catch up on past PS2 hits.
Now, just waiting for November. - mace2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4it hasn't been officially announced yet. and it will be.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+10so basically I can never play shadow of the colossus ever again, that's ***** up
- masterthiefster, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4You could just pick up a PS2 instead; they're pretty cheap now. It's not like the PS3 has many alluring exclusives anyway.
- chocobomog, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Just buy a PS2, they're pretty cheap. Enjoy the PS2 library now (while it is still readily available), and when a PS3 game comes out that finally interests you the PS3 would be even cheaper and will probably offset the cost of purchasing the PS2 now.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6not to mention that most people already have their old PS2 too its not that much of an issue. Sony has pulled all the Ps2 component from the PS3 for this version but they might potentially add back this capability but developing a better PS2 software emulator for the PS3.
- krische, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6@username9000
Isn't one of the reasons GTA IV got delayed was because it was getting difficult to fit the entire game onto one DVD? This is where a hard drive would come in handy to hold data from another disk, but not all xboxes have a hard drive. - dillonstars, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4The other thing worth mentioning is that in SCEE territory, once the 60Gb ones have been sold, the 40Gb version will be the only one available...
http://ie.playstation.com/ps3/news/articles/detail ...
I wonder if other territories will go this way too......... - triplehelix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"so I assume Halo 3, COD 4, Mass Effect, GTA 4, are all gimped games then."
exactly. - elqboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Is all good man... Is the same *****!!!
You guys earn Euro while we earn dollars... - Zettabyte, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2WITH SVGA 800x600!!
