- funnydale, on 01/21/2008, -23/+188You know, if Sony really wants to get bold, they would pull a Sega (circa: 1993), and make an ad showing the Xbox 360 flashing the Three Red-Rings while smoke is blowing out of the back of the system.
Then air it during the Super Bowl.
Believe me, that type of ad would help Sony a lot more than showing games that won't be available for another 6 months. - santasing, on 01/21/2008, -8/+122Isn't this post blowing things out of proportions just to get a reaction. PSN is free, the ad says so. Should Sony not advertise this for fear of being seen as "mocking the XBox".
For the record, the blog post is ok, just the submitters summary is designed to get fans riled up.
Buried as lame. - SwedishNinja, on 01/21/2008, -2/+83sup Apple
- Po0py, on 01/21/2008, -13/+80As a 360 owner and Xbox Live Gold subscriber, I am glad they are doing this. Because hopefully Microsoft will see how they are screwing their users and let the service go free.
- santasing, on 01/21/2008, -11/+71WRONG! PSN has dedicated servers. XBox live is charging $50-$70 per year for a P2P network.
- Azimuth1, on 01/21/2008, -11/+71I agree that Live is far superior to PSN, but that doesn't change the fact that Live really shouldn't cost money, especially considering that it has adverts on it.
However, the price of Live is low enough for it to not really matter to me. I'll gladly pay £40 a year for it. - Zoids, on 01/21/2008, -10/+68You don't have to buy it if you don't want it
- santasing, on 01/21/2008, -5/+61Just play Warhawk and you will understand how online play is supposed to be done. 32 players, no lag, connected in under 10 seconds, push to talk so we don't have to hear whiney teens. Its nice, you should try it out.
- shinythingy, on 01/21/2008, -15/+68They ***** state the obvious, if the 360 had free online they would still be pointing this out. God you people look into stuff way too much
- noobifiggah, on 01/21/2008, -4/+52newsflash... There are hundreds of servers that are directly funded by Sony for online multiplayer games. Educate yourself before thinking about posting BS next time kiddo.
Don't believe me? Log into any of the Sony Warhawk servers or Resistance servers for an example. Try and lag there... It won't work unless you're trying to use your measly dial-up. Besides, COD4 always has 3rd party games on PSN WITHOUT lag, ever. - shinythingy, on 01/21/2008, -4/+48All SONY exclusives have dedicated servers
- Topher06, on 01/21/2008, -9/+51Tha opposed to paying $50+ a year for the privaledge of having to pay extra for a game you want with the price hidden in some point structure that doesn't make any sense. Yean, another winning reason to own an Xbox, thanks for pointing that out.
- mywhitenoise, on 01/21/2008, -6/+48or $5 for good games, Everday Shooter, Flow, and Calling All Cars, $8 for Super Stardust.
- Krystof82, on 01/21/2008, -15/+56Funny, if XBL was free and PSN cost money all the XBL fan boys would be ragging on the subscription cost.
Stop defending something that's utterly ridiculous. Every other console has free online play, Microsoft are just a bunch of greedy *****. Even when you pay the Gold cost, you still have to pay for the other garbage like themes, icons, etc. - iRoy, on 01/21/2008, -10/+49***** NightOwl4.
- mywhitenoise, on 01/21/2008, -18/+54Well for one, I could sign-in and actually pay online last month.
- mywhitenoise, on 01/21/2008, -10/+45I still think single player games are better than playing online.
- jaynemother, on 01/21/2008, -4/+37I love how the title is a complete misrepresentation of the actual post. And by love I mean severely dislike.
- punkcat, on 01/21/2008, -7/+39yeah it did Sega wonders.
actually slander ads are one of the worst forms of getting people over to your side, it shows a lack of confidence in your own product. - inactive, on 01/21/2008, -4/+35Fanboys Fight to the Death
- ScornForSega, on 01/21/2008, -18/+45"In other words, other than being free, what makes PSN better than XBL?"
The lack of XBL users? - Topher06, on 01/21/2008, -6/+32I can play COD4 online for free without 2 week interruptions in service.
- samadam, on 01/21/2008, -2/+27Uh yeah, you have to pay your internet bill. Did you expect them to reimburse you for that one too?
- coheedcollapse, on 01/21/2008, -5/+29Yeah, we might not have all of the bells and whistles just yet, but does it really matter? Online play is online play. I don't want to pay $50 a year or whatever just to get online. PS3's online gaming has been absolutely flawless so far for me. I was on a ***** connection, yet I could still join a 32 player Warhawk game or some crazy 16 player map in Resistance with absolutely no lag at all. That's what it's all about. The gamer tags and community are just unneeded perks.
- MasterInsan0, on 01/21/2008, -4/+27Yeah, it most certainly should be free, especially since we're forced to choke down a ton of ads even if we pay them the $50/year.
- shinythingy, on 01/21/2008, -6/+29Dedicated servers?
- zephyr42, on 01/21/2008, -5/+28the internet.... you pay for the... ***** it you'll never get it
- mywhitenoise, on 01/21/2008, -3/+25uh, no *****? It's not like Sony is going to pay for your broadband connection.
- santasing, on 01/21/2008, -7/+29Did you even read the article or just read the summary, hailed Jesus for another anti-PS3 summry and dugg away.
- JayD16, on 01/21/2008, -5/+27How is that being douchey? The ad literally says nothing but how its service is free.
- dandav, on 01/21/2008, -2/+24Isn't PSN an open system that allows user created mods? Are the wallpapers and pictures free?
Xbox Live costs almost $80 for us British, and its for a gimped peer-to-peer system with a closed mod community, where icons, themes and pitiful extra content costs extra. They charge in points so they can screw non-US users with exchange rates. I have a 360 for the amazing games, but I'm not a live subscriber, and am not going to be conned by this. - richlizard24, on 01/21/2008, -1/+23The point structure is in place to confuse the consumer about the actual price for content so that we, the consumer, don't realize that we are being over charged for content.
- ProKid, on 01/21/2008, -3/+24PSN gets me online so I can play with other people. Thats all I'm looking for. I'm not sure on what the feature set is with XBL, but as long as I can play online with other people I'm more then satisfied.
- BinaryDelt, on 01/21/2008, -13/+33XBL is more feature-rich than PSN. Okay, fine.
I get online to...get this...play video games with other people online. XBL and PSN both do that. PSN is free. XBL is not.
I don't care about achievement points validating me (which PSN is adding a similar feature). Quite frankly, I don't care about any other features. I just want to go online and play my game, and I do. For free. - Daniel591992, on 01/21/2008, -1/+20"And a room full of people who don't talk or do anything intelligent"
You mean as opposed to a room of 12 year olds? - wrenchone, on 01/21/2008, -7/+26Hey why not? Mocking your competition is working for Apple.
- dansmeek, on 01/21/2008, -11/+30for everyone that says xbox live is better or "you get what you pay for with PSN.."
.... i don't get it.
PSN has *dedicated* servers for all the big multiplayer games (RFOM, warhawk, unreal, team fortress, motorstorm, etc... i have yet to play a game where there isn't (at the very least) a publishers dedicated server - like midway). and of course, you have option to do P2P which is all xbox live offers.
online gaming is online gaming. i don't see how one service is better than the other. xbox offers game demos. so does sony. sony offers games to buy. does so MS. microsoft has trailers. so does sony.
they're identical.
i just don't get the 'superiority' of xbox live. it would be one thing if there were a behmoth of dedicated servers for every game. like if you were to play unreal/cod4/halo (whatever) and there was a dedicated server up in so. cal, arizona, north cal, texas, washington, new york, etc. BUT THERE'S NOT. it is all peer to peer which IMHO *SUCKS*. the person who is hosting the game will have a 0 ping and everyone else might have a 60 ping, but it actually plays like you have 2*60 ping, since it's being hosted on a 'server' that is a microsoft xbox 360 system while the user is also playing the game and using up tons of processing power. p2p is one of the worst ways of playing online gaming but that's just me. i'd rather play on a nice dedicated server where everyone has equal ground and nice low pings at the - giddytonk, on 01/21/2008, -17/+36I say kudos to Sony. Frankly, the fees for Xbox Live are complete *****, not only for the reasons mentioned, but that it has been working like ***** ever since Halo 3 came out. So I get to pay $60.00 for a service that allows me to play on a ***** online network. I am getting absolutely nothing for my money here. It is a Microsoft tax that allows me to play Xbox 360 games online.
- zephyr42, on 01/21/2008, -3/+22That's correct ALL XBL Games are peer hosted the only servers are for XBox hosting their own content and YOU DON"T NEED A SUBSCRIPTION TO GET TO IT. How backwards is that?
- slicecom, on 01/21/2008, -3/+22Sony did it with the original Playstation and it seemed to work. I remember commercials with Crash Bandicoot standing outside Nintendo headquarters taunting them.
- iRoy, on 01/21/2008, -4/+22You beat my Stardust high score yet man? Lol.
Seriously though, The PSN owns and it shows with games like these. Sony has all these awesome developers like Housenmarque (SSHD) and Jon Mak (Everyday) making some unique and fun content. Can't wait for echochrome! - coheedcollapse, on 01/21/2008, -2/+20Is $50/year really worth all of the bells and whistles past actual online play? I can get into Warhawk, get on the servers, and join a lag-free 32 player game within a minute (with or without friends on my list). I really think that's what online gaming is all about. All of the little perks and stuff are ancillary.
- BinaryDelt, on 01/21/2008, -7/+24I don't seem to have any trouble finding nearly full games on Warhawk.
- Chirp08, on 01/21/2008, -9/+25Seriously, and don't forget that 10% failure rate on the "fixed" consoles. That would surely get them sales, but not from me. No problems with my 360, and if it did break I would ebay it and guy out and buy and elite at this point. I just don't like the ps3 controller or any of their exclusive games. Doesn't mean the PS3 sucks, it's just not for me.
- tschau, on 01/21/2008, -2/+17Pointing out one of your selling points is not "mocking," nor is it "lambasting." The title here is misleading, and really just plain falsified.
- cthellis, on 01/21/2008, -4/+19A) Live doesn't have that many yet, either.
B) They include Silver accounts, which do not play online, and exist to download content once in a long while.
C) Subscriber base is not a true indicator of active gaming traffic, login-server activity, or download volume.
D) The PSN doesn't keep in constant communication, or route and encrypt as many packets through their servers on even menial tasks, like "trying to play your purchased content."
E) There are many more reasons. - inactive, on 01/21/2008, -5/+20Why did you buy it?
- TheXeno, on 01/21/2008, -1/+16When the PSN finally integrates in game messaging and trophies, what does Live really have over it, especially given the fact that it's free? Sony might even force MS' hand and make them flip the cost switch to free. So we might all be winners here. Glad there's two big consoles duking it out.
- Krystof82, on 01/21/2008, -3/+18Say what you want, nobody from a unbiased point would make sense of paying a annual fee for matchmaking when EVERY OTHER console offers it for free, even nintendo.
Try owning both systems before taking sides, i've had both from launch dates. A year ago i'd probly agree with you, today i'd gladly have my PSN over XBL. -
