- Zamfir, on 10/10/2007, -0/+28"supports the psp as a second display"
This is very cool... can't wait to see what developers can do with this feature. Has a pretty reasonable memory footprint too at 8MB. - Zamfir, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21The PS3 hasn't been out for a year, yet time is running out, how?
- Jholder112233, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Rear view mirror for racing games?
- nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13I think this makes developers able to implement custom soundtracks without taking a hit on memory. A while back, the 2 guys in charge of this kind of stuff (at sony) said that in-game soundtracks were already supported and that it was up to the developer to use them. But devs didn't use them because they didn't have enough memory to spare, but now, by lowering the memory cost of everything else, they can use them, yay!
- JayD16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9The magic of this gen is things can always be changed with a patch...
- DarkStalker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9It's not an update, it's an SDK update, you moron. Spread your FUD elsewhere.
- breakspirit, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9you DO have two eyes.
yes that's a joke. - swimmingbird67, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7sounds great.
- JigoroKano, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9No extra cost because they can't turn it off. You can't run stuff without using RAM.
- Jholder112233, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10We just want XMB access in game :(
We want to be able to continue our dashboard chats while we each play different games. FFS. - yohan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Not everyone has ***** music tastes.
- SiliconRain, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7http://digg.com/gaming_news/*****
- IEatBrains, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Linux + win?
- sneakerelph, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5my guess is it'll be used in much the same way the GBA was used with the gamecube
- Zamfir, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9"The second new utility is a music utility, which will allow developers to give consumers the choice of streaming their own music in game. This utility’s current weight – a hefty 12MB – is likely to be reduced in future releases. Readers should note that the Xbox 360 supports a similar feature (at no extra cost to developers)."
http://www.innerbits.com/blog/2007/08/21/ps3-180-sdk/ - hotdamn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's not for every game, duh!
Does it really matter what song you race to in Burnout? I'd much rather race to my music than to My Chemical Romance, fwiw. - roxya, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4'cos emulated games are usually rendered at a much higher res? :)
though seriously, I don't know the answer. - jacksons98, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I don't know I can think of several uses for it. Any game that involves switching to another screen to do something. For example in an RPG all your inventory could constantly be displayed on PSP or in a FPS like Rainbow Six having the map constantly available. And I'm sure their are people more clever than I.
- disti, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Nope, google for ps3videomode.
- pixelate, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6The PS3 is on a 10-year plan, you fool.
- pixelate, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I don't understand why this comment is getting buried... it doesn't seem very practical to use the PSP as something like a rearview mirror or monitor. The Dreamcast used to let you use the VMU to covertly call plays in the NFL 2K games-- that kind of thing could be useful on a PSP, but then you're giving up some extra functionality of using the SIXAXIS.
Eh digg me down too. - JigoroKano, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Don't exit PS2 games when they are reading or writing to the memory card.
- staticneuron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Good thing this is not a battle of software... it is a battle of games. You have not played consoles long enough if you think that sony isn't one of the best game devs out there. They ARE the largest for a reason. There is a reason MS BOUGHT rare, bungie and lionhead.
- GawtMilk, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Yet you don't own one? So you're pretty much going by hearsay.
- cajie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I logged in to say what DarkStalker said (minus the moron), but he beat me to it :)
- Zoids, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There are stands for the PSP for less than £5. Or you could improvise and lean it up against something.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Limited to 640x480 resolution, no?
- brim4brim, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Okay yohan, I think you missed the point. I mean Heavy metal or punk music is going to look out of place in a game like pikmin or Super Mario Bros. and it doesn't fit with the mood of the game.
Same as if you could have custom sound tracks in movies. The music is there to set the mood for the movie/game.
It can ruin a good game if you use custom sound tracks, however, its worth having because it can be a brillant feature in games like Grand Theft Auto or Gran Turismo/Forza/racing games where you don't need to set the mood.
Basically custom sound tracks in story driven games isn't a good idea IMO. - MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That's the logical train of thought, yeah, but remember Nintendo and their "connectivity" with the GameCube and GBA? So it's been done before, although it wasn't used as much as they said it would. It was cool at times, so I sort of hope Sony does something similar. Remember, it would be entirely optional, nothing would require it.
- kinseyincanada, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2they cant use the PSP in anything really drastic, it would cut off way to many consumers who don't have a PSP.
- diggrim, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1what i dont get is ppl have no complaints about spending like $200 bucks for rockband controllers but will complain about $170 for a psp that does much more. don't get me wrong, i don't own one, but only because few ps3 games use it. i dream of oblivion allowing my gf to play a whisp with the psp while i play the hero.
- JayD16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The 360's isn't any more 'built-in' then this. Microsoft just requires it before the game can get a license.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Why? You made a valid point.
- Namarrgon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Correct, unless they add it retroactively with a patch. It's an SDK feature, and thus requires developer support to add into new games, unlike the 360's built-in player.
- yum9me, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2 I meant where are we suppose to place the PSP, on our laps and glance down every once in a while? If so I doubt it will be a widely used feature IMO.
- sneakerelph, on 10/10/2007, -6/+6Really? So that's what they sound like. I always thought they'd be funnier.
- ZephyrNinety, on 10/10/2007, -6/+6Although I don't own one and will probably be too broke to afford one...let me say, the PS3 will pwn, and it will pwn hard for years to come! But as of right now, it blows chunks.
- Sniper, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Ya well, at least it's better than the Wii - which doesn't even have a hard drive.
- Mrstupid7, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1The peak of gaming was during the SNES Genesis wars. After that gaming became cool and, as we all know, the quality of gaming dropped astonishingly (don't get me wrong there were crap games, but the ratio was nowhere near as bad as it is now) as regular people will buy whatever crap is cool. Since games are cool, no effort, other than making a game look good, is really necessary.
- xTRUMANx, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1The screenshot feature got me thinking. What if video recording was added into the mix. That would really make for an exciting feature. Let's not forget the PS3s hard drives are easily upgradeable. I can imagine there will be huge frame rate issues.
- Sutanreyu, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Does this mean that CURRENT and previously released titles won't have custom soundtracks? D:
- TotalHalibut, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Is it just me that finds it rather odd that people would want to run Genesis games on a $600 piece of hardware? Just goes to show how few good titles are available for it. I mean.. I can understand running them on say, handhelds like the GP2X, or the PSP, but why on earth would you sit in front of your $3000 HDTV, your $600 console, with your $800 digital surround sound system, and play Street Fighter 2?
- Zamfir, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1... yes, I know that's obvious, but nreynolds began his post with:
"I think this makes developers able to implement custom soundtracks without taking a hit on memory."
Which is incorrect, hence my reply. - pegisys, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3They have plenty of RAM, there code is just inefficient. Most of the features that people want are available on the 360, and it only reserves 32MB of memory total.
- Jumangi, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Wow custom soundtracks. They finally implemented something that was available on the first Xbox years ago. Way to go Sony!
- Mejogid, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1The only way that would concievably be possible is to page significant amounts of the current game and OS state to the harddrive, and most likely further limit the RAM available to devs. What I'll never understand is why, when they had no problem chucking a blu-ray drive in, they didn't add an extra 256 MB of RAM, especially when RAM prices are falling as quickly as they are.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2Why are there no emulators available for the PS3? The PSP has been an emulation dream (it's the only reason I have one), but the PS3 seems to have no good options. Has it been locked down to homebrew?
- greenmountain, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1A is perhaps BS that this is all Sony has?
Maybe, but it is not a surprise.
Frankly, I am enjoying it. American company, american jobs, all that.
But I made my decision to buy one machine, based on this one thought.
In a software battle between Sony and Microsoft,
who wins?
as Bubba says: "that there is your Basic no-brainer, that one" - Acqua206, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1Wow, I can listen to Coolio while playing Oblivion.
I don't see what the big deal is with using your own soundtracks. Music plays a big part of the whole immersion factor and listening to Hanna Montana while playing RFOM is like mixing water with cereal. - markwilcox, on 10/10/2007, -13/+5Didn't the Xbox 1 have this?
