- Exhaust, on 12/20/2007, -2/+39Auto shutdown after completing a work unit is a great feature. Looking forward to this update.
- gamemaster357, on 12/20/2007, -3/+37must u douchebag fanboys try to ruin things?
honestly, this is not an article about gaming, its about curing diseases - gincarnated, on 12/20/2007, -1/+30Probable theory is the 360 wouldn't be as powerful considering how great the Cell processor is at running tasks like this and Microsoft doesn't want to give Sony the publicity. Either that or the 360's would probably just overheat too much.
- mywhitenoise, on 12/20/2007, -1/+29It's already up.
- truspect0r, on 12/20/2007, -1/+16One acronym: RRoD
- kenvsryu, on 12/20/2007, -5/+19the ps3 stayed on today to do 2 units in honor of the update.
- sirbeta, on 12/20/2007, -2/+16Here's hoping SCEA FPQA San Diego can start using it again. For those who never knew, the San Diego Division of SCEA First Party Quality Assurance had been running this on the hundreds of PS3's we had pretty much any time the units weren't in use for testing. The powerhouse that becomes is quite overwhelming... But for reasons unknown to me (some thought it was a bandwidth issue [so many machines at once all the time killed the network] and some said it was a security thing where people could somehow collect data from the units making stealing data from under our noses possible) - but it'd sure be nice if we could start that again. While I'm not in any real important position at Sony, I still felt I was helping, keeping my little station going, calculating...
- kingink2007, on 12/20/2007, -8/+21who would want to overheat the xbox while not even playing a game.
the xbox cant handle it! its a POS.
thats why.... - truspect0r, on 12/20/2007, -1/+13Nope, they've proven that the PS3 don't have RRoDs.
- ChildeRoland420, on 12/20/2007, -0/+12We are talking about F@H, and the statistics prove that it was well coded for and is many, many times more powerful for folding than an average PC.
- schoate09, on 12/20/2007, -1/+13Because, although the 360 may be graphically on par with the PS3, it's raw computing power to do such tasks is not. It's ok, as I bought it for a game console, not this, but if PS3 users can help out if they choose, that's great too.
- bejayel, on 12/20/2007, -2/+13I "try" to play online all the time and its much better than live. Any day, any time.
- shinythingy, on 12/20/2007, -2/+122.1 = 2.10
2.01 was released a while ago. - duke1981, on 12/20/2007, -2/+11Thats the first I have ever heard about this. Its a great thing just wish I had a PS3 to help out. Keep it up people.
- mywhitenoise, on 12/20/2007, -2/+11Yes you can, dumbass.
- RedHawk911, on 12/20/2007, -0/+8Ohh the xbots strikes agin. Cmon, The PS3 works really well online i have never had any problem to play online and there is som awesome games availeble for the PS3.
- logan074, on 12/20/2007, -0/+8I like the free online play personally
- vinht426, on 12/20/2007, -1/+9your mom is useless in bed
- mywhitenoise, on 12/20/2007, -1/+82.1 for PS3, 1.3 for Folding.
- wafflez, on 12/20/2007, -2/+9hmm...pcgeek, do you know what 'decimals' are?
- triplehelix, on 12/20/2007, -0/+6i guess "truth" is dependent on your definition of POS. i can't think of any other product, where 1/3rd of them fail, that isn't considered a POS.
if it wasn't for the huge failure rate, nobody would be calling the 360 a POS. - diggrim, on 12/20/2007, -1/+7you can also run F@H on a 100MHz P1...but why would you?
- hplasm, on 12/20/2007, -0/+4Folding@home- not HoldingYourBreath@home
- djSyndrome, on 12/20/2007, -0/+4Apple. OSX 10.4.9 ->10.4.10
Can I have my cookie now? - triplehelix, on 12/20/2007, -1/+4i assume you are just a troll so i'm reticent about feeding you, but just in case your actually ignorant instead, the PS3 is approaching 8,000,000 global sales.
- themonkman, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2Sure, keep digging me down but why don't you at least have the cajones to tell me why you think your system superior?
- lcarsdeveloper, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2Actually I'm inclined to agree. The screenshot of the PS3 version was enough to convince me to install it as a cool-looking screensaver on my PC, only to be very disappointed with the Windows 95 style screensaver I ended up with.
- krische, on 12/21/2007, -1/+3Well seeing as you dugg both of these stories:
http://digg.com/playstation/Warhawk_Operation_Omeg ...
http://digg.com/playstation/PS3_version_of_Unreal_ ...
You should be aware of at least two of the good games the PS3 has: Warhawk and UT3 - samdu, on 12/22/2007, -0/+2Yes. Because curing disease is SUCH an unworthy use of electricity.
- Mtown, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2Playing games on the PS3 gives me entertainment.
- Mtown, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2Well technically its because the PS3 has way more processing power than even the best high-end desktop available today. the Cell has Eight 3.2 Ghz CPU's coupled with an very powerful graphics card. This allows it to blaze through F@H calculations while still being able to produce a cool 3D protein graphic and background.
F@H for the PC had to be designed for a wide range of PC's with varying levels of processing power and graphical capabilities. The F@H designers probably felt that actually completing the WU's was more important than having a nifty display for the PC, especially since a lot of PC's wouldn't be able to run the nifty display without major slowdown.
As for a screensaver, yes it does look very cool and it runs very smooth and fluidly on the PS3. You can spin or zoom in on the protein while it's folding. You can also change the way the protein is displayed (like ball-and-stick view for a very chemical-like look, or "tapioca" for a gooey, shiny, ball-filled mass. - Mtown, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1themonkeyman should not have been dugg down for his comment, everything he said is essentially true.
F@H doesn't even come close to maxing out the Cell Processor
Most games don't even use half of the Cell's power, which is why the PS3 version sometimes has a lower framerate than the 360 version. It's not the PS3's fault, it's the developers and programmers. - foxhoundadmin, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1we are. YOU'RE just too dumb to realize it.
*my, oh my... WTF has become of digg? - ericrous, on 12/21/2007, -1/+2Every anti-ps3 comment near the top of any Digg story ends up modded down to between -31 to -34. Every pro-PS3 comment near the top of any story ends up modded up to between +30 to +34. If that doesn't reak of a concerted effort by an organized group, I don't know what does.
- ESPO, on 12/20/2007, -1/+2why is it that i look at a high-end gaming unit that can run a meaningful app with a killer ui as being far cooler than the games it was designed to run? the pc client gets ***** flung in comparison.
- samdu, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1Wouldn't be a bandwidth issue. It only uses the network to download a work unit and then, when the work unit is complete, back upload it.
- ChildeRoland420, on 12/20/2007, -2/+3Sure some companies do that, but what does that have to do with the Sony PS3?
- foxhoundadmin, on 12/21/2007, -1/+1on par? you make it sound like the ps3 is slightly ahead graphically when it's more like the other way around.
(sorry, just callin' it like it is) - Mtown, on 12/21/2007, -1/+1A. It's free
B. PS3 can use dedicated servers for hosting games OR p2p servers. XBL only uses P2P. This is a joke. You are paying a monthly fee to use XBL, and Microsoft doesn't host dedicated servers? I pay nothing with the PlayStation Network and I get fast, dedicated servers to play my online games on. You pay 10 bucks a month for XBL, and it just randomly picks a console to act as a server and run the game? lol what a quality service!
C. Online connections and latency is exactly the same as 360 games online.
D. It's getting PSHome
Only thing XBL has that the PS3 doesn't is:
1. "Achievements"
2. The ability to view your entire buddy list while in a game. (You can only see what friends are also playing the same game)
3. Cannot invite/open voice chat with buddies outside the game you are playing. (You can still voice chat with individuals from the XMB, or invite buddies who are also playing the same game)
BUT: The PSHome update (coming in the spring, also completely free) will add the 3 things I listed above to the PS3, making the Playstation Network SUPERIOR to XBL, since PSN will still be free AND have dedicated game servers (not to mention the online PSHome environment).
So yes, XBL does beat out PSN in a few areas involving viewing/inviting friends. But in 3 months or less the PSN will have everything XBL has AND be free. Enjoy your monthly fee!
BTW, "spent a boatload on system"? 360 + wireless adapter costs more than a PS3. 360 + HD-DVD drive costs more than the PS3. 360 + 1 year of XBL costs more than the PS3. 360 + "keyboard controller" costs more than the PS3.
360 + 1 year of XBL + wireless adapter + HD DVD drive + Hard drive + "keyboard controller" = LOL. And you need all that JUST to match what the PS3 can do right out of the box. - Mtown, on 12/21/2007, -1/+1I just did. Rebuttal?
- Mtown, on 12/21/2007, -1/+1Strange how 360 fanboys are quick to point out the 360 has sold far more consoles than the PS3, yet you guys cry "omg Sony's infiltrating Digg" when somebody diggs an anti-360 comment. Because technically there should be WAY more 360 users out there to bury the comment down.
His comment was perfectly legit. If the brand of car I chose had a 33% failure rate with in a year, I'D call it a PoS no matter how big of a fan of it I was. - Mtown, on 12/21/2007, -1/+1besides from the fact that the PS3 is many times more powerful than the 360, not all 360's have hard drives that F@H can save data to.
- bejayel, on 12/20/2007, -7/+6@kingink2007
Oh, *****. i forgot there was a reply button now. No need to write a targeted statement.
The 360 is by no means a POS, but running this for long periods of time would *probably generate undesirable effects. - sebrOck, on 12/20/2007, -2/+1http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype= ...
Join the team! - Shaflugi, on 12/20/2007, -5/+4What the ***** is wrong with you, digg? The PS3 gets an update and all you can do is sling ***** at various consoles.
- Dracusis, on 12/20/2007, -2/+1I thought geeks were meant to be smart?
- daridave, on 12/20/2007, -4/+3G-A-M-E-S P-L-E-A-S-E. ...and I mean this as a fan. I understand folding is useful, I'm not bashing it particularly, but if anybody here says he didn't buy a PS3 for entertainment, you're a liar.
- xino, on 12/20/2007, -3/+2Can you name one company that does that?
- Mtown, on 12/21/2007, -2/+1the other way around?
Please show me a game on the 360 that looks BETTER than Uncharted.
I think I will be waiting a long time for a response
(also, check out the Burnout Paradise demo for both systems. The PS3's is distinctively better looking.) -
