- Sirocco, on 01/29/2008, -6/+73They keep upping the HD size to help justify their current price point(s). When you expect a price drop, you get a HD size bump instead.
- Jsmuli2, on 01/29/2008, -5/+67still waiting for Metal Gear Solid 4
- soupdawg30, on 01/29/2008, -9/+59Thats great for anyone who does not currently have a PS3. I bought one in November and this doesn't bother me at all. The more the merrier.
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -5/+43Why are you laughing your ***** ass off? It's not like we can't buy a 120 gig hard drive and a Dualshock 3.
Personally, I think that 80 GB is more than enough because most people are able to stream media from their computer, rather than having to store it on the PS3. The PS3's storage should be used mainly for demos, installed games, and the like. - Del129, on 01/29/2008, -3/+41Hopefully this version has some form of backwards compatibility unlike the 40G.
- WhereAmI, on 01/29/2008, -4/+41So they lose the game and get a bigger hard drive. Motorstorm is good but the 120-150GB hard drive is also nice. Spiderman 3 with the 40GB is not going to be out anymore, but the 40GB PS3 will still exist. I don't know if this will effect the price, I assume the 40GB will also have the DS3 since it costs a little more to make than the SIXAXIS.
"and the prices look to stay the same,"
So don't hold out on that 300$ PS3. - mywhitenoise, on 01/29/2008, -12/+39I'm laughing my ass off that your screen name is 'SEGA4Life', when really it should be 'SEGAhasbeenDEAD4Years'.
- TheRealDj, on 01/29/2008, -23/+50If they keep this at 499 price point this will be a fantastic value. It definitely blows away the Xbox "Elite" in terms of value, particularly if it has 160 gigs.
- smacksaw, on 01/29/2008, -3/+26I still have a single controller because I've expected Dual Shock to come out any time now. I hope this is true.
The other thing - Microsoft...you need to stop selling a hard drive and just sell a hard drive adapter. Sony's got it right on this. Of course they're a huge PC maker while MS is not, but still. There's really no excuse to make the hard drive that expensive when Sony's is user-servicable and constantly dropping and price and gaining in storage. - JayD16, on 01/29/2008, -1/+24At this point the size of the hard drive is just to differentiate SKUs. I think the fact it comes with a dual shock is more important.
- sinizuh, on 01/29/2008, -22/+45So they release 60/20gb at launch (both discontinued), then 80gb ten months later (soon to be discontinued?) and then another 10 months later, they're releasing 120/160gb? Is anyone else getting confused by all these SKU changes?
- lartones, on 01/29/2008, -8/+31who cares, i can install my own internal or external hd in the future and buy a controller for 60 bucks, not that i care about rumble but alot of people do. As long as they dont change the performance of the hardware inside the new console version to be better i should be set with the 80gb. even if for some reason the console failed and bricked in the future im sure the ps3 will be very cheap in even the next 2 years.
- Heaiser, on 01/29/2008, -2/+23Well, those who just bought got in on the 5 free blu ray deal. I don't think they will be too upset.
- dansmeek, on 01/29/2008, -3/+23yeah but... look at this way. i got a 60 gig prior to them phasing it out. with only $120, i got a 250 gig hard drive. the hard drive size shouldn't be as big a selling point as it is on the ps3. it's the easiest console currently to replace the hard drive. i wonder if they'll use hardware or software BC on the 120 gig. and yeah, i'd imagine they'd go 120 and not 160. i also got a dual shock controller for the $50 too. and payed the $399. i don't understand why people think id' be pissed though. i think what i paid for was worth its value. if they drop the price, that means more people will own ps3s / more developers will make games = better games.
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -5/+25did you buy a dreamcast the month before it was dropped?
- grat2001, on 01/29/2008, -3/+21Wait a minute, the 360 has 5 SKU's and I don't hear anyone hear talking about that. The only one with the same 1 SKU is the Wii.
- estvir, on 01/29/2008, -1/+18I guess I'm not the only one who would rather a price drop than a bigger HDD.
Price drop > Bigger HDD, especially when it's so easily replaceable. - inactive, on 01/29/2008, -1/+18No...they got to play it for the last 1 1/2 years.
If you buy something it is becuase you think the price is fair. PEriod. It doesn't matter if hte price drops later, you still got a fair deal. Give me abreak...with technology that is ALWAYS going to happen within 18 months. Do you get upset with how much you pay for a computer when 18 months later you can't even get your computer in the lowest of low end sections where the prices are half of what you spent? - rmw132, on 01/29/2008, -3/+20Don't be so quick to say a $300 PS3 isn't coming soon. As we all know Sony has been modifying the PS3 hardware configuration countless times (I Mean in terms of backwards compatibility, hard drive space, etc.), doing whatever it has to do to sell systems.
A $300 PS3 would be a HUGE system mover, and I predict that will come by the summer. The Blu-ray laser architecture has just been redesigned to be done cheaper, which was one of the biggest expenses on the original PS3 hardware spec. - rmw132, on 01/29/2008, -2/+17We really don't have to make this a racial issue...
- DollaDollaBill, on 01/29/2008, -2/+17Like how apple has bitch slapped every ***** with an ipod for four years?! Why, oh why mighty internet must these companies continue to improve on products!
- mywhitenoise, on 01/29/2008, -8/+23Why do they keep upping the hard drive? You really don't need all that space.
I have a 160GB drive in mine, because I put a ton of my music on there, but people who need the space know how to change the hard drive themselves. There's not enough ***** in the store for a regular gamer to fill up a 160GB drive, let alone a 40GB one. - TheRealDj, on 01/29/2008, -5/+20Again, if they add a DVR function, you'll be wanting that space.
- Zamfir, on 01/29/2008, -2/+16The 60GB SKU still is the best value of them all... too bad you can't buy them anymore, sure glad I did.
- grat2001, on 01/29/2008, -8/+21And people were jumping all down Sony's throat once again without even knowing the full plan...But of course no one will admit it or apologize for jumping to conclusions, only bring up past events.
- Tippis, on 01/29/2008, -4/+15To justify keeping the price the same, thereby increasing their profit (or reducing their loss) while incurring a minmal change in production cost.
- matt0r, on 01/29/2008, -4/+15this is a game console. its not the same thing
the whole point is they are all identical so all games run exactly the same on every machine
laptops being upgraded is an apples to oranges comparison - iceperson, on 01/29/2008, -1/+11Not as confused as I am that MS still sells a 20Gb hard drive for $100.
- soupdawg30, on 01/29/2008, -1/+11I don't see it as me getting ***** over. I get a game they get the bigger HDD.
- SrAStewart, on 01/29/2008, -6/+16Go Sony. They are just making the console more accessible to others. Everyone I have talked to that has bought a PS3 has absolutely loved it. People just gotta push past this negative hype machine.
- estvir, on 01/29/2008, -1/+11"A $300 PS3 would be a HUGE system mover, .."
This is true, especially if Europe and Australia didn't get the massive random and unfair mark-ups. I'd buy a $300US PS3 in a heartbeat. - minorthreat, on 01/29/2008, -1/+11not ***** at all really/ PS3's hard drive is a common seagate laptop drive. I'm sure it would very easy to replace with my 40 if I looked into it
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -1/+11divx has been out for like a month or two now...
- mywhitenoise, on 01/29/2008, -11/+21Uncharted, Ratchet, Warhawk, Resistance, Unreal, COD4, Super Stardust HD, Tekken Dark Ressurection, Devil May CRY 4 (out soon).
Why exactly are you waiting? I doubt a price drop will come by then...though I suppose dualshock 3 may be packaged in by then. - mywhitenoise, on 01/29/2008, -4/+13US isn't getting it any time soon.
And it's easy as hell to upgrade the hard drive on your own. - mywhitenoise, on 01/29/2008, -8/+17Mario Kart Wii is going to be horrible, unless they add classic controller support.
and Uncharted, Ratchet, and Warhawk are REAL must-haves. - chingy1788, on 01/29/2008, -2/+10will this have ps2 compatibilty?
if not then oh well, PS2s are like $90AUD with 1 yr warranty (if you can find one) - DraconWolf, on 01/29/2008, -1/+9Jesus...the sense of entitlement these days it outrageous. I bought a PS3 and I could care less that the new ones come with a dual shock. Back in the older days I didn't demand a free game if I found out they started selling a system with a pack-in.
What is it with people these days thinking they deserve so many things for free when a company is just trying to spread out to other customers? - Nobiting, on 01/29/2008, -2/+10Maybe it's the same
- mywhitenoise, on 01/29/2008, -2/+9If the average consumer doesn't know how to unscrew a few screws, then what makes you think they'd know what the difference between a 40GB and 120GB model is, or DVR functionality?
- Tempest261, on 01/29/2008, -1/+8For the love of God Sony, add an IR sensor on the front! I can't add this thing to my home theater unless my Harmony 880 can control it (and no, those dongle solutions SUCK).
- KMartSheriff, on 01/29/2008, -2/+9Worthless? Hardly.
Annoying and inconvenient? Yes. - Ajajadude, on 01/29/2008, -3/+10I have plenty games on my PS3 to keep me preoccupied, thank you very much. I've put my 360 back in the box with the intention to sell it despite it's "huge lineup of games." Why? Because I have more fun with my PS3 and almost everyone I consistently played online with back in the PS2 days have a PS3. They both have their pros and their cons, the PS3 just fits me better.
- WhereAmI, on 01/29/2008, -2/+8The average consumer should install a new hard drive if they want more space. What do they do with their computer when they are ***** on space? Hire some nerdy kid to do it. Sony has opened a money making opportunity for us here, take advantage of it.
- WhereAmI, on 01/29/2008, -3/+9TheRealDj,
It is obvious you don't know anything about how the Sony DVR for PS3 works. It uses something the US doesn't have. Understand? Until the US upgrades, the DVR probably won't be out. Thats what I'm basing my facts on, which is some good evidence since the Japanese DVR doesn't work with US television. But, if you don't want to listen to me import it or something. - inactive, on 01/29/2008, -1/+7you pull the cap off, take out the blue screw and pull the hard drive, unscrew it from the mount (4 screws) put in a new sata laptop hard drive (storage capacity does not matter) put the 4 screws back in, put the hard drive back in, put the blue screw back in and put the hard drive cover back on.
Not exactly rocket science. I am suprised you havent done so yet. :P - DarkDx, on 01/29/2008, -5/+11If this doesn't have BC... Sony... I won't buy a ps4. You can't just forget the HUGE library of games that is currently available, and the PS2 was the most popular console in the last gen.
- bagboyrebel, on 01/29/2008, -1/+7"paying too much for the box to begin with"
The point is, if someone thought that it cost too much then they probably wouldn't even buy it. - dansmeek, on 01/29/2008, -2/+7it's really not hard.
the launch units were a 60gb/20gb. 20 gb was quickly phased out, leaving only a 60gb.
then they introduced an 80 gb with software BC. leaving only a 60/80gb. as soon as the 60gb sold out, they introduced the 40gb unit which was cheaper but with no BC. leaving only a 40/80gb. now, as soon as 80gb sells out, they willl have the 120gb.
the ps3 has only had 2 diferent variations at a time. and they pretty much the exact same.
the xbox360 has way more complicated variations. some with HDMI. some without it. some with a FALCON chip. some with another type. some no hard drive. some with. plus all the different hard drive sizes. you people just like to whine. - elchuy, on 01/29/2008, -1/+6I have a 80 GB PS3 and I don't mind that Sony is coming out with a bigger hard drive. Unlike the 360 it's actually easy to change the hard drive on the PS3. I'm not trying to start a flame war. I own a 360. It's a great system. I just wish it were a little more open like the PS3.
