- JEAH, on 11/30/2007, -13/+68"I don't see any reason why this won't happen for Konami."
Are you ***** kidding?? 1 million on DAY ONE?? Good luck. Not imposible, but certainly not likely. - mattyice11, on 11/30/2007, -5/+60There were more Wiis than that on the market when Mario Galaxy came out, and it took 2 weeks to hit a million.
- jacksons98, on 11/30/2007, -25/+75I don't see any reason why this won't happen for Konami. I don't know a single person who owns a PS3 who isn't planning on getting this game. I don't know a single gamer who isn't at least interested in this game. As long as Konami delivers what they've been promising I think they will get the success they deserve. I know I'm getting it day one.
- fotodevil, on 11/30/2007, -3/+46Or else what? They are going to stop selling the game and write it off as a massive loss? Is anything they make after day 1 not going to "count" for some reason? What if it sells 600,000 day one and 500,000 day 2? Is the game a failure? Will people lose their jobs? Give me a break.
- rofflecopter, on 11/30/2007, -5/+44Well there are things you have to consider like the low attach rate of the ps3, games like ratchet and clank didn't even break 100k in its first week, and when mgs3 came out it took about a month to move 1 million units. Main problem with metal gear is it doesn't have the mass appeal of other games like halo or madden.
- afidler, on 11/30/2007, -4/+35So, if they would sell 1,000,000 copies in the first TWO days it wouldn't be a success?
I think this article is a little over zealous in exaggerating this premise. - jtbndy, on 11/30/2007, -6/+35Obviously if MGS doesn't sell a million in day one, its taken off the shelves and booked as a loss.... Gimme a break this ***** article is worthless.
- Nobi-Wan, on 11/30/2007, -5/+34Halo 3 sold that much in 8 hours so it's not impossible. Not many people follow MGS like Halo, though. It's just not as accessible to the more casual gamer. Hell, I've played every Metal Gear game and I STILL am not sure what the story is.
- KingGoonie, on 11/30/2007, -7/+33I also don't get the day one nonsense. Again let me talk about Titanic.
#1 Don't come to me with its different, its a movie, because how many times are we comparing the two industries lately (see Halo 3's gross on its first few days and all the inaccurate stories.. it was highest grossing opening, NOT biggest, which implies number of people)
#2 Titanic made a little over 28 million its first weekend. It then went on to make over 600 million in U.S. by the end of its run, and almost 1.8 billion worldwide. Most movies aren't like that, but some are, quite a few, there called sleeper hits. Even very known movies like Titanic was before its release can be sleeper hits. They don't need to have that huge opening to be huge overall.
#3 I think its almost impossible for MGS4 tosell 1million in day one. You know what else I think is impossible? I think its impossible that it doesnt sell alot more then that in total sales. What I mean is, say first day it sells 300,000... by end of first week 700.000, by end of second week 1.2 million, by end of first year 5 million... ends up around 7 million, etc.
#4 This basically goes along with #3. Stop it with this Halo 3 big opening nonsense with all games. Games continue to sell. Most people who buy a wii into the future will probably buy Mario Galaxy. Many poeple who buy PS3 in future will probably buy MGS4. GTA4 will be continually purchased by new PS3 and 360 fans, etc. So its not like the more popular games are going to go 1 million day one sales, and then another 6 months to make the second million... there will be steady purchases. I think a great example of this would be GTA3. I'm sure this had a big opening, but I think it was even more successful because of word of mouth, people buying a ps2 (like me) pretty much just for this game initially. I admit I don't know the numbers, but I would think until Vice City came out (and probably afterwards as well) GTA3 was continually among the top game sales all the time even months after its release.
So thats my long take. I think that the PS3 not selling that great may hurt the amount of units MGS4 sells... but I think even if doesnt sell as much as it potentially can it will definitely sell enough to make a profit, sell enough to be considered a success for the PS3 in regards to the ratio of how many PS3 owners buy the game... If the PS3 has 10 million at the time... I would say 3 million in its first few months, and then as the PS3 user base grows, that will go up by another million and another million, etc. - Nobi-Wan, on 11/30/2007, -15/+40Dude, don't be naive. Do you know how many PS3 owners just bought the system because it was a "cheap" Blu-ray player? Those people don't give a crap about games. I just went into a Gamestop yesterday and some guy buying a PS3 asked "Is the new Mario going to be on the PS3 soon?"
No, I don't think every PS3 owner is going to buy MGS4... let alone even know what it is. - Sniper, on 11/30/2007, -9/+33Considering MGS2 originally got 1.52 million pre-orders in Europe alone, I don't see this as a hard goal to accomplish.
- theragu40, on 11/30/2007, -5/+27MGS does not have the frothing hype machine that Halo has got. The average non-gamer has never heard of MGS, but Halo has become as well known as Mario. Again...not saying that MGS won't sell well - because it will - but it doesn't have the same 'instant purchase' value for as many people as Halo does. MGS is much more appealing to people who have been gaming for a long time.
- Nobi-Wan, on 11/30/2007, -1/+21Yeah but a lot of people were pissed about MGS2 and the "bait and switch" of how you weren't really Snake in the game. I love MGS3, though. I just wish they didn't shut down the online servers within a year.
- whataboutdave, on 11/30/2007, -4/+23I knew I wasn't the only one who didnt get why it must earn back 1 million sales on day one. I mean, we live in a world where people buy houses and cars on credit - its not like we don't know how to delay payment.
- dansmeek, on 11/30/2007, -8/+27you can model the total units projected for a game sales more accurately after the first day. if a million were to be sold on the first day then statistics could be used to approximate how much will be sold in 1 year. if it's a million in the first month, this number will be far less.
- inactive, on 11/30/2007, -2/+19MGS3 sold less than 4 million
- bigbadgoat, on 11/30/2007, -11/+26says the guy who enjoys games like Halo, and Gears of War and their 6-8 hour single player session, including the cut scenes.
I'll take a 35-40 hour MGS game any day. - davewelsh79, on 11/30/2007, -0/+15It may seem complex at first - but as it turns out, it's really just stupid.
The great Pyramids of Egypt were the first Metal Gears, which released robo-spores into the Y2K bug.
Ronald McDonald, with the help of cheese soup, controls America from a secret Volkswagon - hidden in the past.
A coalition of malevolent Dentists, under the guise of the American Dental Association and acting under the Bicuspid Protocols, devises Molar Gear Roy. This new Gear emits a focused pulse which vastly promote tooth decay.
These scenarios all took place in a VR Simulation, which it turns out was just a dream you were having - during a VR session, designed to capture data about dreaming in VR.

By the way, I really like Metal Gear Solid 1 through 3. - cybermort, on 11/30/2007, -8/+22but unlike the Wii the PS3 are usually more hardcore gamers that are currently starving for new exciting games and will go and buy it on day one.
- plizard, on 11/30/2007, -1/+14well crap, i was going to get it day two.
- Christbait, on 11/30/2007, -3/+15You should take note of the sales slump in preceding MGS games, because MGS2 was a cheap cop out and had people like me especially pissed that I was playing as some girly man instead of Snake, and the demo gave off completely wrong impressions as there was no sight or mention of Raiden.
Kojima has slaughtered the franchise because he's so sick of it himself. - daridave, on 11/30/2007, -3/+15I also didn't know anybody who didn't want Mario Galaxy or that doesn'twant Smash Bros. on Wii. It doesn't mean it will sell a gagillion on day one, like we saw with Mario. Everybody may want it, but not everybody wants it zero-day. Besides, do not ignore the fact that the PS3 is a trojan horse for Blu-Ray. Many people want movies, not games...
- JayD16, on 11/30/2007, -13/+25One thing to remember is that MGS4 is going to be a worldwide release. Its not as impossible as you might think.
- fognozzle, on 11/30/2007, -0/+11Do they owe the mob money on day 2 or something? That doesn't make any sense.
- mywhitenoise, on 11/30/2007, -4/+15Oh shut the ***** up with your 'gameplay'.
PS3 has plenty of games that have BOTH graphics and gameplay, as well as innovation...Uncharted, Ratchet, Warhawk, COD4, Resistance, Eye Of Judgment.
I guess in order for a game to have 'gameplay' you need to move your wrists around and point at a TV? It's funny that the casual gamers (mainly Wii owners) want to tell the hardcore gamers what gamplay is. - mmocrunch, on 11/30/2007, -9/+19why does it need to sell 1 million its first day? If it takes 6 months to sell a million will it not be successful? I don't get it.
- maley, on 11/30/2007, -1/+10Kojima is leaving the series and Snake is probably dying. I wouldn't expect a MGS5
- neATL, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8If MGS4 sold only 1mil in 6 months, Im sorry to say...thats not successful for the MG franchise.
- Lonecow, on 11/30/2007, -7/+15This is just threat based advertising.
"Better buy our game on day 1, or we might not make MGS5!" - ekin09, on 11/30/2007, -10/+18I am a gamer, and I lost interest a year ago. This game is a debacle.
- admckay, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8MGS is a 3rd person shooter/stealth game, not 1080 snowboarding. so, y'know until i can camouflage my ass next to statues and execute sweet stealth kills in real life, ill stick with MGS.
- Asianwaste, on 11/30/2007, -0/+8I wonder how many copies Duke Nukem Forever will have to sell?
- swr1ght, on 11/30/2007, -2/+9I own a PS3, and I have no interest in purchasing this game. Konami has ***** controls schemes. They have always had ***** control schemes. I pull left...I wait a bit...and...There goes my guy to the left.
Though I have heard that they have completely redesigned the control scheme, so this game might not be *****. But I'm sure not betting on it. - jacksons98, on 11/30/2007, -1/+8I sold my X360 and got a PS3. Couldn't be happier.
- HBNDonut, on 11/30/2007, -4/+11I'm sorry... what?
- inactive, on 11/30/2007, -0/+7I didn't find MGS3 even remotely unplayable. The new camera is nice, but serious MGS players consider it cheating.
It is a stealth game, you're not supposed to have a full field of view! - skywake, on 11/30/2007, -3/+10http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_development_ ...
- Dunhamzzz, on 11/30/2007, -5/+11I'm getting a ps3 and a hdtv especially.
- bonjovisucks, on 11/30/2007, -3/+9One thing to keep in mind is several people will be getting PS3s for Christmas. This will greatly increase their install base and could set Konami up for a pleasant surprise.
I, for one, will be getting the game on the first day. - MiDri, on 11/30/2007, -0/+6That's not true, I've not touched my copy of Goonies sense halo 3 came out!
- Lugano, on 11/30/2007, -0/+6Right...because the cost goes right to the developer...It's not like its divided up amongst the parties involved in the sale...
- demiurgency, on 11/30/2007, -5/+11That and there is no multi-player to MGS.
Despite the incredible graphics that Sons of Liberty promises, MGS is not actually all that great a game.
MGS = Great game!
MGS2 = Really good game, over hyped, obtuse and contrived story. Awful (AWFUL) main character.
MGS3 = Great story, but almost unplayable, until Subsistence came out with a decent PoV system.
MGS has never been a broad appeal game, but those who like it, like it a lot.
1 million on day 1 seems like an unlikely goal to me. - dheaddy, on 11/30/2007, -4/+9If MGS4 was ported to the 360 this would be achievable, purely on the basis that the 360 fanboys would buy it up so they could brag about it to the PS3 fanboys
- beerunifies, on 11/30/2007, -0/+5Well, it's already a system seller for me.
- DigitalN, on 11/30/2007, -1/+6people don't stop playing games when a new one comes out.
- reed311, on 11/30/2007, -2/+7It takes you 35-40 hours to beat a Metal Gear game?!
- Christbait, on 11/30/2007, -3/+8This game is underhyped as *****. No way it will even reach the heights Halo 3 went on sales day.
- LogicBomB, on 11/30/2007, -1/+6I think I'm that 1 person who never really got into these games. Sure they were pretty cool at what they did but it wasn't my kind of fun at all. :/
- frygar, on 11/30/2007, -2/+7I'm calling FUD on this, inspired by a bunch of frothing-at-the-mouth fanboys. If you're excited about the prospect of Sony's console failing as well as the developers who support it, you need to step back and really re-think whether or not gaming is good for you.
